What a gorgeous location! Who would've thought that right in the heart of wine country and acres of hilly vineyards is a secluded tasting room, enclosed with large Sequoia trees, a true grove! The wine here was absolutely wonderful. If I had the money to buy a case of their $90 Cabernet (s) I would do so in a heart beat - it made me want to channel my inner Olivia Pope! Definitely a cool place to bring out of town visitors who have certain expectations of the Napa County vineyards - something different for them, and be sure to point out the HUGE award winning pumpkin =) read more

Sequoia Grove was my worst tasting experience during the past three years of wine tasting through the lower and upper valleys. I am sad to state that because their winery had a great presentation and their wines were diverse and unique tasting. However, my experience was ruined by a tasting bar employee with no customer service skills. Going into my appointment, I knew there could be an issue because the tasting was gifted to me and I rescheduled due to a last minute work issue. When I greeted the employee and asked to be checked in, she couldn't find my reservation. I asked her if it would be an issue because I was unsure how booked they were, but she cut me off and told me to find a place at the bar. My interactions with her became worse from there. At least she explained the wines, but she would walk off immediately, ignored questions, or exasperatedly responded to me. There were three parties (5-6 people) when I was there and they were mostly quiet and limited their interactions as well. Besides my interaction, I witnessed her argue with a reporter who visited with a friend. The reporter wrote about Sequoia Grove four years ago. I thought that it was telling that the writer returned, apparently it was glowing review and she asked about Sequoia Grove's food and wine tasting. The employee denied it existed at the winery even though Sequoia Grove's website states it serves a food and wine pairing. The employee also walked away from that group when they asked questions about the wine history and ignored them so another employee took over their tasting (lucky for them!). Near the end of my tasting, the employee appeared frustrated about not finding my reservation. She asked me to call the gifter, and I did, who sent me the email exchanges with the Sequoia Grove's customer service and told me they ordered something special. I thought they wanted me to pick them up a bottle, but they told me to forget about it since it became a hassle for the employee. I let the employee know that I was okay with paying the $30 and to not worry about the wine bottle or special request. The employee huffed and told me she would call her manager. My other party member felt really uncomfortable by how put out and rude that employee was becoming. We really wanted to pay and leave at that point. After speaking to her manager, the employee returned and confirmed that the gifter and I were correct about the reservation and special request. However, instead of apologizing or dropping the matter, she hurriedly grabbed a bottle of wine, put it in a bag, and shoved it into my face. Her parting words to us were "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth; it's 96 points." I do not know what warranted her response, but she clearly was having a bad day. My party member returned the wine to her, because we didn't want anything to do with Sequoia Grove at that point. I visited a lot of wineries but never experienced such terrible and unfounded behavior. The employee is a female with red hair and has been employed by Sequoia Grove for three years. I hope whatever is wrong in her life improves, or maybe it's time for her to leave the industry. I hope people visiting this lovely valley that I call home find other places to visit. There are so many wonderful, small production wineries that employ passionate and hard-working people who love the product they help create. Sequoia Grove is not an ideal example of this, in my opinion. Also, I want to shout out to their customer service employees who heard my complaint and offered a gift certificate. That was very sweet, but I won't waste my time on a place that treats customers like they are burdens. read more

Awesome place! We really loved Vikki who helped us. She was super sweet and helpful. This place was a little more quiet which was a nice contrast from some of the other tasting rooms. There was a $20 and a $30 tasting fee. I can't remember which one we did but it was waived if you bought three bottles of wine. The wine was affordable, starting around $20 and going up to $100+. They were also generous with the pours. They had some good 2008 and 2009 cabs and other really neat library wines from vines that have been on the estate since Napa was on the map. We tasted most of the wines inside at the tasting counter and then took the last glass to walk around the grounds. Really relaxing and enjoyable. Cheers! read more

I love Sequoia Grove wines.. spending a few hours at the estate on a food and wine pairing with Dean was a phenomenal experience for us, and one which led me to appreciate wines even more - on a broader scale. Our experience was casual, unhurried and very educational. We sampled about 10 wines, including some from barrels and we also had a grand stand view of the grapes being sorted just outside the window of the room we were in. Dean stayed late with us and spoiled us with the attention to detail and answering our questions. The wine and food experience is smart, and although it puts some food and wine pairings in perspective, I also believe that the complexities of each wine and the meal as a whole still leaves tastes at a personal level and palate. The wines we tasted ranged from single vineyard cabernets to the winemaker's annual blend. each has a unique and beautiful taste and we were even privileged enough to taste the wine from the first growth of the vineyard that was planted about 7 years ago. The experience cemented my belief that this estate is well undervalued and has significant potential. i am stocking up on all their wines and will continue to build my vertical of many of their wines. A must see if in Napa. read more

What a friendly tasting experience! I have been going to Sequoia Grove for years and after a brief hiatus decided to stop by and give them another go on my visit to Napa Valley last week. I'm so glad I did! We were the first people of the day in the tasting room so we were given a super friendly and warm welcome. No appointment is needed here. We opted to share a reserve tasting (with a pretty hefty tasting fee, $40 per person). I figure why waste my time on the 'everyday' wines you can pretty much buy at any wine shop across America; pour me the "good stuff." The wines here were all solid and pretty decent. I still found the wines to be overpriced for what they were but that's just the new trend in Napa: every winery wants to charge $75 and up for a bottle of wine. It's unnecessary and makes the wineries look like they value a quick buck over winning new loyal fans and wine drinkers. That being said, I ended up taking home two $75 bottles (d'oh!) of their special reserve Cabernet. It's tasty and I think will age fairly well. While nothing on the tasting menu said that the tasting fee was waived with a purchase, the friendly lady assisting us made a comment to the guy who came in a bit later that he wouldn't have to pay the tasting fee if he "bought a couple of bottles." So we also bought "a couple of bottles" and didn't have to pay the tasting fee. They pushed the wine club but not too hard, which I appreciated. Nobody likes getting the hard sell when they are on vacation. I was happy with the personalized service we received and the staff was very friendly but they did make a few offhanded comments about a "big party of 10" that was scheduled for later in the day, complete with an eye roll and a sigh. While we were just a party of two, it made me feel kind of awkward. Take a few minutes before you leave and ask if you can walk around the outdoor space out back. It's quite lovely. Get to the winery early and you'll be the only ones there. Don't fight crowds, get out of bed! It's never too early to drink wine in Napa Valley! read more

Sequoia Grove - Take a few minutes to stroll outside and enjoy the lovely, relaxing grounds. - Wine Tasting Room Near Me - Rutherford, California

This is one of the best wineries I have been to in St. Helena. Outstanding service and very friendly crew, not pretentious at all. We came by and paid for the Vineyard Tasting ,$30/pp and it was worth it. Ask if you can try the Cambrium, $138/bottle , its to die for. They only make a few of this so its really worth buying and saving for a special occasion. I will definitely come back and enjoy another glass of wine. read more

Ask for Bob! He totally made our wine tasting experience so excellent! I love cabernets, and theirs are pretty tasty. Their grounds are so beautiful, picnics are a must. I normally don't drink Chardonnays, but theirs are pretty delightful, not too buttery. read more

By far my favorite winery on my little excursion this weekend! The staff was amazing and I just loved ambiance of the place. Everyone was so friendly in there! Staff and patrons! Dogs are welcomed and apparently there is a HUGE mastiff taking residence at the winery! Okay, I may be biased, since I love dogs so much but...the staff were very friendly too =) The Rebellious Red was the winner amongst my group. The whites...had a hint of...um...weed? I don't know, but my friends loved it haha. I love all the fruits the winery has! There's a persimmon tree outside and an apple tree in the back. The apples were HUGE. And there was a trellis in the back that had the cutest little birds playing in it. ps...tell me if you can find the little blue duck ;) read more

Our hostess, Patty, was very sweet and accommodating. And our wine educator, Fernando, was very knowledgeable with our tastings and suggested a great pairing. The goat cheese and pear pizza went very well with the Cambia 2015 (which I bought 2 bottles of). I loved that their wines had a commonality, which I enjoyed. I highly recommend this winery. FYI you must make a reservation. read more

What an amazing place! I finally was able to experience an amazing alternative to the standard tasting here. The wife and I have been members since 2012 and finally sat down and did A Taste for Cabernet! It seriously was an amazing experience for us and the friends that joined us. Dean did an amazing job and really made us think about our food choices while we are drinking a good Cab. If you are thinking about switching things up and want something a little different then I highly recommend you trying this tasting, you will not be disappointed. The tasting was relaxed, informative, and just fun. Once again one of my favorite places to taste wine as they always treat us like royalty! Also, if you are looking for an amazing wine club option I highly recommend Sequoia Grove, there wine club service is just amazing! read more

We did a week of tasting around Napa/Sonoma/Russian River valley, so many places to choose from. Only went to a few spots in Napa...we are not up for big tasting fees, one of the gold places we visited in all of our stops was Sequoia Grove. Laid back atmosphere, no giant castle, no moat, no concierege :) just a pleasant experience with great wines and great staff. Loved the grounds as well. Amazing reds, got to taste a couple of their higher end wines as well...amazing. Talk about smooth! We look forward to coming back to Sequoia. read more

What a great Covid wine tasting experience. We had an outside couch and chair set, the warm weather was tempered by a cool breeze and our hostess was freaking hilarious. She knew her wines and brought us tasting treats we couldn't buy at the store. She also did a side by side pour of 2014, 2015 and 2016 cabs so we could compare and contrast. I learned more about cabs in a hour with her than I have ever learned with anyone else. I wish I could remember her name. read more

A wonderful morning of tasting at Sequoia Grove winery. We felt totally safe and comfortable tasting in the lovely patio area in front. Darlene was first-rate in providing information on the wines as well as the safety protocol. The 'bites' from the kitchen were incredibly delicious, just like the wines. Thank you Sequoia Grove for doing such a great job of social distancing tasting experience! read more

The wines were good, if not great. There were some very good Syrahs worth purchasing, as well as a good Cab (corrected thx to Matt M. who clued me when I confused myself). The staff seemed erratic, but friendly. Three different people rotated through our tasting, and no one really engaged us the way other vineyards' staffs tend to do. I now know why that's so important. We left when done, feeling we'd crashed someone else's party. read more

not great. It never was but it's gone downhill since the 90s. Wines are way overpriced for the quality

Loved visiting Sequoia Grove. Oscar was a great host and all wines were great. I would definitely recommend visiting.

Only go to this winery if you want your car broken into (along with 4 other cars). No camera's, no security, no help from staff except to say " what! Oh no!" Thanks, had luggage and wine stolen. Seriously, this winery can't purchase a few cameras????? read more

We love this place! We are wine club members and enjoyed a seated tasting on the cozy patio/lawn on a clear September Friday during "COVID times". Mason had a magical ability to know when our glasses were nearing empty and had excellent information to share about each vintage we tasted. We did not feel rushed, and all wines we tasted were superb - a reason we've been members for years! The charcuterie platter was also an excellent accompaniment to the wines. Highly recommend Sequioa for amazing wines and even more amazing service! read more

I totally dig the outdoor seating! Also, the rustic appeal and decor is really nice. The wine tasting experience was really casual and laid back. This is a really nice wine tasting experience. Being from Minnesota we liked the wooded feeling of the place. The tasting was casual, and fun, and not rushed. The cabs I had were decent, and I think the quality of the cabs are good especially at their very modest price points. Tried an excellent Syrah, and ended up taking a few bottles home. I would return when back on an extended trip! read more

This was my first stop in wine country, and a pretty good one at that. My friend and I did their tasting. We got to try a few more wines than what was listed, due to our friendly pourer. My favorite of them all, hands down, was the Rebellious White. And I'm a red wine fan. After starting with that wine, the rest were not as impressive. I can't remember a single one besides that one, if that says anything. If I had the opportunity to come back, I'd have a glass of the Rebellious White only. Also, I noticed in the reviews that you're supposed to get a free tasting if you buy a bottle. I had no idea, but I bought a bottle of the Rebellious White and was still charged for the tasting. Hmmm. But anyway, it's a pretty place, the pourers are jovial and you don't need a reservation for the tasting. read more

Horrible customer service here. I would never come back. We had an appointment and we drove all the way from Roseville & they canceled on the spot. I totally understand canceling due to poor air quality but when asked to talk to a manager to see if there was something that could be done for us since people came into town for this specifically for this Christopher Parker came out and very rudely told us that we could come back and make another appointment if we wanted. No apologies, no consideration for our time wasted & very unprofessional. read more

Sequoia Grove was our last stop on our way out of town. Our server; Bob was great. Informative about the wines, and the area. Don't know how we got on the subject, but he also explained to us how corks were made...you learn something new everyday! Did you know corks came from a cork tree? A cork Oak to be exact. We saw a piece of bark from the tree with corks cut out. (check photos) For me, who loves factory tours & wonders how things are made...that was very cool to see. Oh yes, the wines were mighty tasty also! read more

Sequoia Grove was recommended as having a friendly, casual tasting experience. Casual yes, but I didn't feel the staff was particularly friendly. The tasting room was loud and bordering on chaotic. It was hard to get the pours when we needed them. It really took a lot of arm-twisting to get a repeat pour of a wine that I wanted to try again to see if it was worth purchasing. In the end, there wasn't anything that our party wanted to take home. The positives of Sequoia Grove are the grounds and dog-friendly tasting room. I always love being around pups, and the huge trees around the property made me feel like I was in the forest minus the bugs. read more

I had the pleasure of experiencing the wine and food pairing at Sequoia Grove. Chef Britny Maureze exceeded my expectations. The food was phenomenal and pair perfectly with each wine. With so many wineries in the area, it can be hard to know which is worth your time. Sequoia Grove, was one of the big hits of our four day trip to the area. I highly recommend skipping some of the big commercial names and stopping here. I found the tasting room to be relaxed and cozy. The staff all love their jobs (and the wines) and it shows. The stars of the show are the big complex cabs. Perfect representations of the Rutherford California style. Cambium blend is real knockout. If you are going to pick up a few pricy bottles in Napa, you should try this rich balanced red with a long dry finish. Of course every winery wants you to join their club, but we found this one to be worth it. Great hard to find wines at reasonable prices. read more

I live in Sonoma County and am partial to Sonoma wineries. No doubt this is partly blind patriotism, but it goes deeper than that: my overall impression of Napa is 'overcrowded, overpriced, and overblown'. I was happy to find that Sequoia Grove proved that slanderous impression wrong. The winery had an understated elegance. The tasting room is an attractive but non-flashy wooden building. The namesake sequoias shade the pleasant patio. The staff was professional, friendly, and unpretentious. During the beautiful Sunday mid-day I was there, the scene was laid-back and pleasant. Cab Sauvignon is their specialty, and 'balance' is their proclaimed ethos. Thus prompted, I of course searched for said balance while tasting, and did find particularly the higher-end wines to be nicely subtle. Tannic, but not too. Acidic, but not too. Nothing overwhelmed the palate. I was fortunate enough to experience the 'Cabernet Culinary Challenge', designed for groups of around a dozen. This was divided into two parts: first, an abbreviated version of their 'Taste of Cabernet' tasting; and second, a challenge to create the best combination of crostini toppings to pair with one of the cabs. This is framed as a way to test your understanding of how different flavors complement or detract from the wine, but beyond that is just a fun way to play with a bunch of nibbles and see what goes well together, wine or not. It was a fun experience. read more

Today was my first visit to Sequoia Grove and it certainly won't be my last. In the sometimes over-priced, ego-driven Napa Valley, this place is a breath of fresh air: chill staff, liberal pours, fair prices, and some really top-notch wines (I love their cabs). Our group of 6 walked in around 3:30pm today, without any sort of reservation. We were just looking to enjoy a bottle of wine on their patio, and the sommelier behind the counter couldn't have been nicer about it. To help us decide on a bottle, he busted out 5 or 6 glasses and proceeded to pour us a selection of their reds. When we were having trouble making a decision, a few more glasses appeared alongside bottles of some of the nicest (and most expensive) of their cabs. 20 minutes and many pours later we finally decided on their beautiful 2008 single vineyard Lamoreaux Cabernet Sauvignon ($90 non-club). A few of us also bought various additional bottles to take home. When my friend later decided to join their wine club, our sommelier came out and offered 20% refunds to everyone who bought a bottle. This was above and beyond. I'll definitely be back to take advantage of their back patio, and may someday soon join their cab club too. read more

I have lived in the wine country my entire life and my father works in the wine business. I feel like I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to wine and drinking wine, that is until I took the class taught by Dean at Sequoia Grove. If you EVER have the opportunity to take this class, I highly recommend it. I learned so much about the valley, areas where grapes grow and debunked so many myths about food pairings. I will forever remember what I learned in this class. Dean has so much excitement and passion about wine, it inspires everyone around him. The winery itself is beautiful. The outside area has lots of tables shaded by tall trees. It is great for hanging out and relaxing with your significant other, friends, or family. We will definitely be returning to this winery! read more

We were lucky enough to get Dean to give us the tasting. I had already met him at a previous tasting in San Francisco, and he is an excellent educator. Each time I learned a bit more about wine and especially about this outstanding vineyard. We were treated to some of their very best wines, which are nothing short of spectacular. The Cambrium is out of this world, and all of these top end wines were fantastic. My companion bought several bottles and I asked him if I could try the less expensive white and rose which they make. These are also excellent and terrific value. I ended up buying two of each. It was a weekday and we were alone in the tasting room in the charming rustic cottage just of the highway, nestled in, predictably, beautiful sequoia trees. I couldn't recommend this enough. You won't regret it. read more

Another gem in Napa Valley! Love the space. Speaking in general, I'm tired of tasting rooms and their elbow-to-elbow crowds and their ridiculous fees! Nowadays I try to find wineries with open seating and just buy a nice bottle and enjoy the wine, the scenery, the company, and the atmosphere. Sequoia Grove hits the mark on those points! The wines were modestly priced and tasted great for their price range. The atmosphere (terrace) was very enjoyable. The service, although busy, was still helpful. Rebellious Red ($38): basic table red wine. Wasn't great but definitely palatable. Probably could have used some aerating. Earthy nose. 2008 N.V. Cab ($46): much better. I had to ask for a library bottle, fearing that their current release, a 2011, was too young to drink now. This 2008 bottle was delightful. Had a great nose, a great specimen of a cab. Full body but not overpowering. Doesn't linger in the mouth like single vineyard selections, which was fine since we weren't pairing this with food to help balance the mouth-feel. I thought it was going to be hard to find another spot that could compete with Robert Sinskey. This place definitely is on my radar now! Note: another winery with a patio/terrace was Pine Ridge. But their patio is closed during the winter. Such a shame. Will have to experience it another time. =( P.S. The staff is very friendly. Even though I didn't do a tasting, I was given a free pour of the Stagecoach CS ($140). Great wine! Ageable for another 15 years. Should open up and showcase varying levels every few years. read more

Like many others, my husband and I have been visiting Sequoia Grove for years and are wine club members. We have thoroughly enjoyed the wines and most especially the atmosphere at "The Grove". We felt like Norm walking into "Cheers" , where everybody knows your name and you are greeted with genuine warmth. UNFORTUNATELY that has all changed! The new "private" tasting room is an insult to those of us who have spent thousands of dollars at Sequoia Grove! Everybody LOVED SG because they had the most amazing wines and they were so down to earth. You didn't need deep pockets or a degree in viniculture to enjoy your visit to their tasting room. I am also deeply saddened to hear that Janie Bason has been let go. Janie put a real spark of energy in the tasting room! She made all who entered feel like her new best friend. She is why people kept coming back! We would say, "let's go up to Napa and see Janie". You can't buy that kind of authenticity! And now, Sequoia Grove, what she did for you for so long, she will be doing for someone else. And I will HAPPILY go there to try the wines, be enthralled by her new knowledge and sign up for THEIR wine club because we will be canceling our membership with you until things go back to normal. Get the message? You have screwed up...BIG TIME! They say you can never go back, and that change is inevitable. Just this once, I hope they're wrong. read more
