My gal pal and I had a wonderful time doing The Perfect Pair experience. We were greeted in the visiting area and were given a glass of chardonnay. We were then greeted with a staff member, who showed us some history of the Cakebread family and property, and then we made our way to the eating/tasting area. It was just me and my friend and the one staff member. We were informed about the various foods coming out and each of the wines that paired with them. The food was lovely and paired so well with each of the wines. Their white wines were fantastic. The food was good as well~ lots of different flavors. THey're smaller bites, so don't expect to get incredibly full to bursting or anything. LOL! After finishing our food and wine, we went to the little kitchen area, chatted with the staff there, and then went on a tour of the winery, the barrels, garden etc.. We then went to the gift shop to purchase some wines to take home. Overall, a lovely experience. :) Parking is plentiful~! We arrived at the winery and were able to find a charging station for our EV. (We had our own attachment for a Tesla charger.) From beginning to finish (approximately 90+ minutes), it charged about 15%. LOL! read more

Cakebread Cellars is widely advertised as a family-friendly winery but it clearly is not, based on our experience. We have been to Cakebread many times prior before we had our child and we are frequent purchasers of their wine. However, after today's experience, we will no longer support this winery. We stopped by yesterday around 1pm for a wine tasting, but were turned away since we brought our 3 year old. We were told to come back at 10am today since that is the only time they allow under 21 year olds to accommpany tastings. We were turned away again today since they booked out but there were few people there at 10am. There are much better wineries available in Napa and Sonoma. Skip this one, especially if you have kids with you. read more

We arrived here for our Monday afternoon VIP wine tasting appointment at the main building. We were directed to get back in our car and drive to the rear of the property where the wine club is. Coming into the club tasting room, we ran into our hostess Jo, who happily sampled out the wines to us while enjoying some shade on the outdoor patio. I was not surprised to see all the wine served in Riedel glasses, but even the water glasses are Riedel. Right next to the outdoor patio is a garden of herbs, flowers, tomatoes, corn, squash, and the like. We did get a small charcuterie board which we gobbled up by the third sample. My husband and I have enjoyed Cakebread cabs for some time, and we had a great time at their last year's Spring Fling event. We were so excited to come back this year and bought our tickets early on. Unfortunately this time the event was a disappointment. Although the food was good, last year's event was better (especially the paella and the sliders they served last year). However, we were glad to see Point Reyes cheese and the Fatted Calf charcuterie there again, as you can't go wrong with those staples for sure. So, food and wine-wise, it was fine. The major issue, and the one thing that caused the negative experience, and hence the 2-star rating, was the poor service. When we walked up and lined up to get checked in (there were 2 lines based last names, alphabetically), the groups ahead of us were greeted and assisted in a friendly manner, through friendly conversations and were directed where to go after to get their first tasting of the Rosé. After the host finished helping that group, she began talking to other hosts and doing something on their computer. We waited patiently in line as we were next in line, thinking they were busy finishing up something on the computer screen and that we were going to be helped next as soon as they were done (not one time did anyone acknowledge us or said anything about helping us anytime soon; and there were 4 of them). There was no one else in line at that point but us and there was a period of long awkward silence because, again, no one acknowledged us. BUT THEN another group came in and they were greeted right away. After their exchange of pleasantries, one of the hosts handed the group their lanyards and name tags and even impressed them as she remembered their names apparently. When we realized we were just an invisible couple standing there, my husband (who is rather patient, rarely ever complains or anything, and it takes a lot to get him annoyed) finally asked if we can get checked in. The host simply said "yes," asked us for our last name, gave us our name tags and lanyards and sent us on our way. Again, no "hello," "hi," "thanks for being patient," NOTHING! It was so off-putting. First impression is everything and that interaction certainly set the tone for the rest of our time there. This was one of those times when we were acutely reminded that the service we receive at certain places can definitely be based on how we look, and it pains me to write this. We definitely won't be back. We did not linger long for the event, nor did we purchase any bottle (although we are fans of Cakebread cabs). Went up the road to Caymus and purchased a few different bottles their excellent cabs and received a serving of welcoming, warm and friendly service from their staff to boost. read more

I absolutely love their wines! Cakebread is perhaps most well known for white wines, but their Cabernet Sauvignon is one of my faves. I also did a Cabernet and Cassoulet cooking class here and that was so much fun. Chef Brian led the class and was a fantastic teacher. Afterwards, we get to eat our own cooking and the meal is paired with healthy pours of delicious wine. I'd highly recommend the experience! My husband and I did the classic tour and tasting of Cakebread Cellars last weekend and it was a delight! As soon as we arrived, we were given a splash of their sauvignon blanc, which was light and crisp. Jane did a great job at setting the stage for Cakebread's beginnings and how it's continued through the present time. She also did a great job at talking about each wine we tried! I thought it was really cool to see the "egg" wine vessels that Cakebread uses. I've read about them but never seen one. I also love the effect that aging the wine in that vessel has on the wine itself. It put a really cool finish on the wine we tried that had some time in one of them! The wines we tried were all so delicious. We bought one of their cabernets to take to our dinner at Cole's Chop House and it paired so well with our steaks! The property is so pretty and I'd love to explore it more one day. We definitely had a lovely time at Cakebread! read more

We visited Cakebread with a few friends who were in town, and were excited to potentially join the wine club since we had tried some of their wines in a restaurant before and really loved them. We opted for the Cakebread Classic Tour ($50 per person). The tour itself was great. Really friendly guide and tasty wines. However, our experience turned negative by the end. I mentioned to our guide that I wanted to take a walk around the outside of the winery, and he said it was only allowed if accompanied by a chaperone. What's the point of visiting a winery or joining a wine club, if you can't even enjoy it fully? Then, while sitting on a bench in front of the winery, we were abruptly approached by a staff member at 3:55. He told us to leave immediately since they close at 4 PM. On our most recent visit, our group of four was seated comfortably on their gorgeous terrace. While the wines were fantastic (the 2018 Benchland Cabernet was my personal favorite), the real star of the show was their homemade Meyer lemon marmalade. Served atop creamy goat cheese and toasted crisps, it was absolutely delicious. Laura, our wine hostess, was amazing--warm, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the wines. She even went above and beyond by sharing a copy of their marmalade recipe with us, which was such a thoughtful touch. I couldn't have picked a better place to introduce my friends to wine tasting for the first time. Great looking property, nicely done. Tasting wasn't bad at all, a long tour of the property along the winemaking process. I am not a particularly big fan of white wines, but this was not bad at all. No rush, they take time, explain, generously pour wines. I think we tasted 7 different varietals. Everything was excellent until at the end I asked to try their Howell Mountain Cab. I had 2014 and it was amazing, what actually brought me to the winery. To my surprise the answer was "you need to buy another full tasting". The opened bottle was on the counter in front of me, anywhere else in the Napa Valley that wouldn't be an issue. In the most places they will even open a bottle. Not in Cakebread. Let me start with - this is the best white wine in Napa. Sav Blanc, Chardonnay - top tier. What pushes me to give Cakebread 5 stars is their tasting room and tour is beautiful. From the tasting area to the outdoor grounds - I cannot recommend this enough. I even joked with the tour guide and mentioned that I strongly disliked Cab Franc, and she had me taste their recent release and it was so good! To anyone who works in restaurants, Cakebread wines are synonymous with elegance, sophistication and great taste. It should come as no surprise that their on-site wine tasting experience is no different. Cakebread Cellars has a gorgeous, modern property blended with a rustic style: lots of wood and vegetation as you walk the grounds. Upon entering the main tasting area, we were greeted by Alyssa, who charmingly poured us a glass of wine while we awaited our host, Dean. Dean took us to an intimate room with a long table and several glasses just waiting to be filled. We learned so much from Dean about the history of Cakebread Winery, from Jack & Delores Cakebread's acquisition of the property, to their "green" production of wine and the utilization of on-site gardens for their culinary dishes. He is an utmost professional and an asset to Cakebread wineries. Our party enjoyed a 4-course tasting ("The Perfect Pair- Wine And Food"), and I cannot recommend it enough! It is seasonal, so your menu may be different, but ours featured 2 Chardonnays and 2 Cabernets, paired with a smoked Sturgeon pâté, kale salad with black garlic, pumpkin soup and elk chili. Unfortunately, we had to cut our visit short to make the flight home, so we did not get to accompany Dean on a tour of the grounds. On my next visit to Napa, I will definitely rectify this and allow myself time for a more comprehensive overview. But, that didn't stop us from hitting the gift shop! Once again, Alyssa was there to assist us. I selected some fresh honey made on the grounds and the "Cakebread Cellars American Harvest Cookbook" featuring recipes by Jack & Delores Cakebread as well as their head chef, Brian Streeter. Anyone considering a visit to the Napa Valley area would do well to put Cakebread Cellars on their "must-do" list. We stumbled upon cakebread because they did a Collab with domain Caneros and it ended up being a great experience. We did the one hour tour with Jeff, he was a great hosts. We were able to visit the cellars both the oak barrels and the egg cement barrels. We tasted about six different wines from Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine for me was a little strong. I would've liked it to age a little bit longer but overall it was a great experience and the property was beautiful. Also a plus they have free car charging in the parking lot. read more

Kelly was remarkable, her Cakebread family and winery knowledge was thorough, she has an enjoyable sense of humor, she allowed us to revisit our favorite wines and enabled this group of strangers to dialogue and really enjoy our time together at Cakebread. I've already shared with several family members who frequent Napa, add Cakebread to their list and request Kelly. The wine we explored was candidly much better than the Cakebread wine I've enjoyed in the retail market. Purchased a mixed full case, some we didn't try before the purchase because everything we did taste was good to very good. Didn't utilize any dump bucket at this winery. From the Sauvignon Blac welcome wine to the Dancing Bear Ranch Cab, "walking wine" and the four other glasses that accompanied our delicious food pairings, we enjoyed every tasting. Cakebread has been on our list to visit for a while and we wanted to make sure we tried the best of their wine. HIGHLIGHTS + Gorgeous estate ! + Iconic history + Amazing cabs! Trying the "Dancing Bears" Cab Sauv is worth doing the elevated tasting for. LOWLIGHTS - The tasting experience left more to be desired. As an elevated tasting, typically one would receive personalized attention or even a private experience.... but we were led into a room with 3 other couples, quickly explained the wines, and then left alone with a group of strangers at a group table. When we did have questions, our wine guide would answer them quickly and sometimes in a dismissive manner. However, we would def come back for the wine! I would maybe do the elevated tasting again if we had a large group (making it completely private) and just adjust expectations on the wine education aspect. read more

I have often found Cabs over powering in tannins and found they had several that had wonderful mouthful flavor and to my taste.
