Very impressed with AXR wines. Before going I knew nothing about them, I just googled what some of the top wineries were in Napa valley and they're name popped up. After tasting a few samples and speaking to my spokesperson about the history I fell in love. These are some serious bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon. My tasting was in the back patio by the redwoods, so gorgeous you kind of forget you are in the valley. Jeff was an awesome host and walked me through the history, the wines and winemaking process. What a cute winery! Be sure to bring picnic food and make use of their picnic grounds behind the winery. They were very kind, accommodating and understanding about us arriving 15 minutes late. We still got through the whole tour and tasting and our wine educator even had time to offer us a pour of one of the reserve single vineyard wines outside of the standard tasting. I really enjoyed the Sauvignon blanc and one of the cabs so bought a few bottles of those (didn't love the Pinot though my friend did so to each their own). It was a very short tour just to see the redwood trees they had outside, during which we sipped on some delicious rose, which I also purchased, and then we went straight inside to a large round table just the 4 of us for the tasting. We were given water bottles and chips with cheese, which were delightful. I also found the wines much more reasonably priced than the larger, more commercialized places. Our host was very energetic, funny and talkative - he really made the experience. Over all, this was a super fun stop - really enjoyed the wines and appreciated the reasonable prices! read more

Came here in October and reserved the AXR single vineyard tasting for our group of friends. The grounds are so beautiful, homey country, and quaint. We had a welcoming pour of sav Blanc. They gave us a tour of the tasting room and the patio which was beautiful. They showed us the fairy circle of red woods and they took so many amazing pictures of us! We had our tasting in the main house which was again so beautiful, a country modern delight. All the wines were distinct and delicious. They were so knowledge and kind when explaining the wines and even offered some extra pours for us to try. We had our service dog Scooby with our friend group and they were so accommodating and even let us meet the vineyard dog who is a big and fluffy guy. I definitely would recommend AXR, even if it's the only place you decide to go. We discovered AXR after finding their red blend at the AJs fine foods grocer in Arizona and we had to visit. It was well worth the trip and bought a few cases to take home amongst our group. A must go to. read more

It's definitely a high end luxury experience, with high end priced wines to match but still highly recommended. We started with a nice white in the tasting room before being led outside for a tour of the grounds and redwood grove. Pure beauty. Inside we tasted a seemingly never ending roll call of vintages and bottles of high end Cabernet. AXR is a great example of expensive Napa Cabernet and I enjoyed all the wines although they all tasted similar after awhile and I do not recall a particular favorite. My favorite high end California Cabernets are Ridge Monte Bello, Mt Eden Cabernet and Quintessa and none of these were quite at that level, but they were still wonderful wines. My friend bought more than to $600 worth of wine so we got our tasting comped ;-) Our server was knowledgeable and I loved the shaved cheese topped chips given with tasting. Wish they included more food choices. Martini's food pairing tasting is still the best in Napa. For the experience, highly recommended. read more

This is our second time to AXR winery. We have been up to Napa about 4-5 times. We have been to all the trendy and large wineries. We wanted something different. What a treat every time. In planning our Napa trip, I really wanted to find a vineyard that would give us an intimate tasting experience. Consistently seeing 5-star reviews for AXR, I booked a tour and tasting and it delivered on just that. We learned about its historic grounds, from the recent fires only being a few feet away from the vineyard to the Fab Four owners coming together to create AXR. The redwoods were a definite highlight of the tour-- over 300 years old! AXR took note that it was my friend's birthday and customized the booklet to reflect that-- a great surprise for her! I enjoyed that the tasting was my private party and the host, as we got to really get to know each other and the wines (and the different soils in Napa Valley). The kettle chips with shaved goat cheese were delicious as well! I ended up buying a bottle of their Cabernet Sauvignon as a gift for my mom's birthday :) This place is pricey ($90 per person for tasting/tour), but for the experience and high-quality wine (their wine maker is Jean Hoefliger), it's worth it. read more

This is my second time at AXR, known for its velvety and robust yet powerful cabernet. The tastings are hosted at the immaculate barn house. Our host (Kelvin) is knowledgeable and very hospitable. Previously the winemaker at cabernet powerhouse, Jean Hoefliger makes Cabernets that have supple texture gives in to velvety tannins, complex and intensely powerful wine. I enjoy many of the Cabernets here, from the basic everyday drinking to the single vineyards that it is just hard to go wrong here at AXR. My husband and I had such a wonderful experience at AXR with Kevin. We did the single vineyard tasting and had an opportunity to taste one Chardonnay and six different cabernets as part of our tasting. Every one of them was amazing. Our personal favorites were Beckstoffer and AXR. Kevin was such a wonderful, welcoming host. He sat with us the entire tasting and spent his time making sure everything was taken care of. He is very knowledgeable about wines and wineries around the area. We highly recommend Kevin! She told us about her life and places she liked in the area. She greeted us when we entered with a white wine. Then gave us a tour of outdoors and we finished our tasting indoors. They give potato chips with some grated cheese on top and we couldn't stop eating them. Their wines are good and my friends bought some. I bought a red for one of my friends cause their birthday is next month. But at that time, I didn't see myself buying the wines for myself cause I like buying Napa wines as gifts for others more. Axr Winery came highly recommended from our friends who work in the tasting room at Mending Wall. They raved about it so much that we called up to book an appointment. Luckily the winery was able to host us on a Monday afternoon for a tour and seated tasting. As soon as we pulled up, our hostess Anna came cheerfully bounding down the stairs with two ice-cold glasses of Sauvignon Blanc in her hand. This was Anna's ninth day working at the winery but you wouldn't have known it. She was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, and I felt an instant rapport with her. We started off our brief tour with a history of the property, including the cellar, barrel room, old barn, and the highlight: a natural fairy circle made of trees. It was super cool that along the way, little wine bottles were hidden and chilled in ice, so we got to sample several whites along the private tour. After the tour we were guided to a private parlor room that was set up just for us. We had very nice crystal Riedel wine glasses, water glasses, and a massive plate of kettle cooked potato chips with a hearty portion of cheese shredded on top. (Yes, these chips were absolutely incredible, so simple yet so tasty, and proved to be the ideal palate cleanser for the huge reds that were soon to follow). The room was elegant and modern, decorated in soothing grey, red, and white tones, with soft music playing. We took a brief peek around the inside of the house too, but we were the only party at the time. I truly felt like a VIP with this quiet, personalized tasting experience. Anna perfectly poured a tasting flight and guided us through the list of wines we tried (I lost count but we had at least 8 wines, including two very special barrel samples of a future bottling)! The glossy brochure at each of our place settings had a personalized welcome sheet, a list of the wines and vintages we were going to try, and a clear price list with order form. Interestingly enough, the winemaker's tasting notes were buried in the back -- which was quite refreshing because it gave us plenty of time to make up our own minds about the wine. Considering we had never heard of this new winery until the day before, we were blown away by how incredible the wines were. Both the whites and reds were big, bold, and totally in your face, just like we like our wines to be! It was difficult to pick a favorite because they all suited our palates. We had a nice chat about the wines and the wine club, which Anna brought up at an appropriate time. We ended up joining because, while there aren't any significant benefits (with the exception of complimentary tastings when you visit), the wine is only available for purchase directly through the winery -- and club members get first crack at any allocation. We placed an order for a few bottles of futures (something we've only done twice before, ever) and a few more of our favorites we tried that day. I can't wait to get the wines at home and try them away from the winery because I feel like that's the true way to evaluate a bottle. Our tasting fees were waived as well, which I appreciated. These aren't wimpy wines, so make sure your palate can face the music. It's also far from inexpensive, with an entry level white (Sauv Blanc) priced at $28 and the highest end red (axr Napa Valley) priced at $250. The majority of the reds hover in the $125 price range (which is still a steal for how fantastic these wines are). Axr is a phenomenal new winery and is a must-visit for anyone who is a fan of adventurous, fruit forward whites and reds. read more

Unfortunately I resigned my club membership today. I ordered a wine Christmas gift on 12/15 and I followed up via phone and email yesterday for a tracking number. Come to find out it had not shipped and would not arrive until well after Christmas. They said they were sorry but nothing could be done. Overview: -My visit to Napa Valley ended with the AXR vineyard and winery. This was the highlight of the day and an amazing way to end our trip. AXR is small compared to the other monstrous wineries in Napa Valley, but AXR stands out more than any other winery when it comes to the quality of the wine and the hospitality that comes with a small winery. -Our tour of the grounds was definitely the highlight. The vineyard is parallel to Hirsch Creek producing the moss covered trees and ground that was truly a sight to see. The vineyard is home to several redwood trees, the only ones in Napa Valley. While you are strolling through the wooded area you are surprised with more wine awaiting you, as well as historical facts regarding the main house. -After the tour you are brought into the main house and seated down at a table with a booklet. The booklet has your party name on it and has information regarding winery, wines, and your host. You try several different wines at the table. -Before leaving you are given the opportunity to write about your experience in a book. A Polaroid photo is taken of your group and placed on the same page. A fun memento that other wineries don't offer.
