We had a nice visit to Charles Krug Winery while on a tour with the Napa Valley Wine Train. Our tasting and winery hostess was Riana who took us on a small tour of the property and educated us on this history of the vineyards ownership and family legacy. Once inside the large upstairs tasting venue, we were treated to a nice wine tasting by Riana. The wines were nice. I'm a Cabernet person but I enjoyed the sparking rose. Refreshing and not too sweet. I wish we would have had more time to view some of this historic photos and explore the downstairs part of the venue as it looked interesting but perhaps another time when we return to Napa. read more

This is the oldest winery in Napa opened in 1861. They closed during prohibition period for 40 years and re opened again. I enjoyed all their wines! Their Sauvignon Blanc was very fruity and I usually don't drink whites - but this one hit the spot. Their Cabernets and Red blends were incredible- loved it! The person servicing was super sweet and welcoming. They could do more with their history - from a display perspective-maybe make it into a museum room - in their defense, every server was willing sharing all the history and keeping us entertained. read more

Love the historical significance of this winery as they were the first opened in 1861. But after tasting their wine i'm glad Robert Mondavi had the gumption to branch out from his brother and start his own winery bc maybe he tasted what we tasted today. (This is me being funny but it's also true loll!!) Came for a tasting part of Legacy Wine Train tour. This was our first stop at a winery so very exciting for the group. The tour was very nice, property was beautiful, met Lucky the cat such a sweetie. Our tour guide was also very sweet and shared the history of the winery and answered my question about what makes wine *vintage* and learned that *vintage* actually means when the grapes were harvested! Anyways, we tasted the wines and we didnt really like any of them :( but we only tried 3 so maybe there r ones we would like. But there r so many other wineries so im not sure we would be back. read more

Came here as our first stop with the St. Helena wine passport! We called to make reservations as we weren't able to do so online through to k and the staff was very helpful. The estate is very large and one of the oldest in Napa valley! We were seated quickly and our server Haley was very knowledgeable about history and the tastings. I loved how she talked about the history of Charles Krug and she also gave us a tour of their barrel room which is visible behind some glass doors from the tasting room. The tasting area is a larger room with many tables and you are free to walk around and look at the pictures and signs which include a lot of the history of Charles krug. I also saw the Napa valley wine train stopping by for a tasting which looked fun! read more

As a hopeless romantic for historic places, I was naturally drawn to Charles Krug Winery after learning that it's the oldest winery in Napa and was the first winery to do public tastings in 1882. In 1943 Peter Mondavi bought the winery and through four generations, the family continues to operate the winery. We did the Tour and Tasting Experience ($90) last year (2023) and were so impressed with the wines that we became club members. This year, we brought 3 family members along to do the same tour and tasting. If you're looking for a tour where they take you to their cellar along with areas where they show you how the grapes turn into wine, then this is not the tour for you. Here it's basically a walk around the vineyard and property as the tour guide acquaints you with the history the winery. The tour itself was shorter than most of the other tours we've been on. It lasted about 20 minutes before they take you into the tasting room. The tasting comes with four wines and a charcuterie board. The 2 wines that sold us on becoming a club member were the * 2019 Family Reserve Generations Red Blend- 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot. This is a Bordeaux style blend. Peter Mondavi was a stickler for 100% Cabernet Sauvignon but reluctantly allowed his son to make this blend. AVA: Napa Valley *Only 6,500 cases produced* $85 / Club $68 * 2019 Family Reserve Vintage Selection AVA: Yountville & Howell Mountain-Napa Valley. First produced in 1944, this wine reflects Peter Mondavi's vision of a Cabernet Sauvignon wine. *Only 682 Cases Produced* $175 / Club $140 If you buy a bottle then they will deduct one tasting from the bill. We usually come during the off season in early December and there's always plenty of parking. But the tour guide said it gets pretty crowded in the summer. Happy tasting!! read more

WHAT COULD IMPROVE YOU ASK ? ADAPTABILITY. THEY REFUSE TO. DON'T TURN AWAY GUARANTEED BUSINESS. THAT'S BAD BUSINESS. Example: MY friends went on the wine train and we couldn't, but we could meet them at the winery. So we drove to do so, only to find out the place is one of the only wineries in all of Napa to close one day a week and so far the only one of dozens that closes on a Monday. We offered to pay and buy wine. They said no. I asked if our friends could come out to the open front lawn with tables with some wine they bought so we could join them. They said no. I said you are losing our business. No concern of that from them. They said they would get in trouble. FOR WHAT ?! Making your company more money ?! I then asked the train company representative if they could put on their website that this and ONLY this winery won't allow friends or family to join, so people like us, whom I know aren't the only ones that encountered this, don't have to told they can't spend valuable quality time with their friends that they came hundreds of miles just to do, and provide income to the business because or a company or individual that refuse to adapt. I'm NOT saying the business has to change permanent policy for us or anyone. I support the right of a business to be open and closes when they choose. However, as a fellow business owner, I won't turn away business that would do NO harm and only good to accept. It makes no sense. Now as a result, we will NEVER come to this winery again and will advise everyone else we know to avoid it. That's the consequence of not adapting and making exceptions for customers willing to pay to come there. read more

This winery is amazing!!! I attended a special event here (Andrea Bocelli Concert) and everything was amazing!! From the food to the staff, the venue and weather made it amazing!! It was pretty crowded but well organized. There was 3 special chef's displaying their food, I was lucky enough to tried the majority of it. What a beautiful winery with such wine history attached to it! My husband and I visited Charles Krug for their Cabernet Connoisseur tasting with Kris and had a really lovely time! Since we're big Cabernet fans, we decided to upgrade from the mixed tasting to the cab only one. We enjoyed every cabernet we tried and really loved the details behind each one. We enjoyed talking about the winery's history with Kris and learning about the differences in the cabernets we were tasting! He definitely made the experience memorable especially with the anniversary card from the winery & a quick walk over to their incredible wall of wine! It was a really cute photo spot. We really enjoyed our tasting at Charles Krug with MJ. She was a joy to talk to and provided some great information about the area. Our tasting was seated and we got to enjoy 4 of their wines. They even let us have a splash of another wine we were curious about. Although we didn't eat there, the pizzas and food looked and smelled delicious. What a terrible experience. 4 of us went for the caviar experience. I made it a point to share that it was one of the girls first times in Napa and that this was her first tasting experience. The server never once stopped to share anything about the wines or what to look for, or how to taste and experience it. The final course was the canelé (which is my favorite btw) and it was burnt. None of us could eat it. And when we told our server, she kept saying well it's supposed to be crunchy outside. I think I know the difference between crunchy and burnt. We did speak to the manager and he apologized and gave us his card for next time. There would never be a next time. With so many wonderful wineries and experiences in Napa, I wouldn't waste my time coming back here. read more

This review is specifically for the Heritage Fire Tour Barbecue Competition held at the winery on August 18th. The winery has a huge lawn area surrounded by matured beautiful trees and vineyard, which makes it a perfect place to host an outdoor bbq event for a big crowd. With 24 local chefs to compete, plus several wineries providing wines, this AYCE event really is EPIC! From all the great jobs done by the chefs, 2 stands out for me: - Chef Michael Fagnoni from #HawksRestaurant in Sacramento. His pork belly sandwich is perfect in every way.... just like he is! We visited Charles Krug winery on a mid week morning, which was perfect for us. We love visiting wineries when they are not super busy and can give wonderful service and have no stress. We had an amazing host, Derek, who was extremely knowledgeable about wine, Charles Krug winery history, Napa Valley history, and any subject wine related. I can't think of a time when I've had a better host. The wines were very good, and the winery was just beautiful. We got a small tour of the barrel room and wonderful tastings. 10 stars for Elizabeth. She is so sweet and caring. We had a 4 PM test day with Pizza, and she called to let us know Pizza closed at 4 PM and took our order in advance. She was so concerned about making sure we got there in time to eat the pizza nice and hot, which was super appreciated. Robert and Kris were the sweetest wine tenders. We found this winery through the Saint Helena wine passport, and it did not disappoint. We ended up purchasing a bottle of the White to take with us for dinner. The venue was historic and the buildings have been up since the 1800s. So much history here! Spicy pizza was so good! Best crust ever. Wish they sold ricotta and honey for me to dip it in! read more

The champagne and caviar tasting at Charles Krug Winery was fabulous! From the welcome glass of champagne at check in to fabulous service by our server, Haley, everything was great! The tasting included caviar with crème fiche, lemon zest, Bellinis and capers along with four champagne and wine tastings. Review for Charles Krug Winery - Andrea Bocelli Concert, June 21 I was beyond excited to surprise my 80-year-old mother with tickets to see Andrea Bocelli at your winery--a once-in-a-lifetime experience we had both been eagerly anticipating. Unfortunately, what should have been a magical evening turned into a deeply disappointing and frustrating ordeal. Upon arrival, we were told that our reserved seats had been taken away to accommodate a last-minute VIP. Instead, we were moved all the way to the back of the lawn, with little regard for the fact that I was with an elderly guest. I had to walk her across uneven ground to seats where she could barely see or enjoy the performance. What was meant to be a cherished memory turned into a night of disappointment. It felt incredibly unfair and disorganized. No guest, regardless of status, should be pushed aside for someone deemed more "important." Charles Krug Winery should be ashamed of how this was handled. Events like these should prioritize hospitality, integrity, and respect for every guest, not just those with influence. I truly hope no other family has to experience the same. read more

Recently, on several occasions we have had the the opportunity to explore the North Bay/Napa Valley. Charles Krug Winery teams up with the Blue Note Club for a Jazz concert calendar. Last weekend a couple of my Jazz music friends decided to check out Jonathan Butler and Gerald Albright concert. They were playing two shows and we choose the afternoon 3:30 show. Probably not the best choice if we had known the weather was going to be 97 degrees in the shade. We arrived around 3 pm but no one was seated yet. We were informed that the band's sound check was running late. The whole seating and entrance was discombobulated. We actually choose to sit farther from the stage then our ticketed seats were since we were looking for cover from the blistering sun. Minus stars for the seating and ticket purchase. Minus stars for the uncovered and seating process. Drinks and snacks are super expensive. $14 for a Coors light. The concert and sound was outstanding the venue, prices and services was appalling. The venue is definitely at the mercy of the elements never mind the cars driving in and out of the lot during the concert. read more

Wine was great, but the service was terrible. Three of us came here without a reservation, and all wineries were fully booked that day. When we called this winery, a very nice lady informed us that we could still order and enjoy wine in the outdoor area. Everyone working here was friendly and nice, except for the server named Bianca. Our experience and mood were perfect until we were escorted to Bianca, the young server working in the bar. Her attitude destroyed my happy trip to Napa. We first got 4 glasses of wines and snacks and gave her 20% tip from the bill from the bar for no reason. We asked for water. She said she would bring us water to the outdoor area but she never did. It was a extremely hot day. After a long wait I had to go back inside to order more wine and ask for water again. Then, Bianca made us stand at the bar for a long time. She intentionally ignored us, not making eye contact intentionally and 'pretending' to be busy, then she left the bar leaving us alone. Fortunately, a nice gentleman saw us and gave us water. Still thinking of that day made me very upset. Bianca, you shouldn't be in a service job. read more

Came here for a weekday tasting for $50 per person with 4 pours each. The tasting room is large and space but was very cold so be sure to bring a jacket! The wines were good, I preferred the reserve cab and a few people loved the Chardonnay. We didn't like how they poured our second tasting into the same glass as our first as it mixes taste profiles and forces us to finish each glass until the last drop even if we didn't care for it. Thus I would recommend asking for a new glass or a side by side. We got a tour of their cellars and got to see their giant cement eggs which ferment the wine and learned that they're actually owned by the Mondavi family which was new to us! read more

I came here for my birthday with a group of nine and we were a mixed group of drinkers and non-drinkers. I'll stay off the bat that the reason why I knocked off a star is because when I booked, the description was a patio tasting and we were excited to be seated outdoors by the vineyard. They actually do not have an outdoor tasting option and we were seated inside. But otherwise my group and I had an amazing time. Bianca was a phenomenal host and we had so much fun with her. She gave us a tour of the property and the cellar, and we were able to hang around afterward with our wine and take plenty of pictures! Loved the white wine selection too. read more

Came here with a large group of ~12 people during the fall. We got here an hour before our scheduled time (at opening) and we were happy that they got to accommodate our early arrival. Our sommelier Jeff was wonderful - he cracked a few jokes and gave us the history behind the winery and the wines itself. The place was beautiful and spacious. Large outdoor space and lots of space to walk around. Wine was great, our party enjoyed it and some of us even got a bottle or two. They also offer food here, such as a small charcuterie platter with breadsticks, cheese, meat and crackers, as well as pizza. We ordered 2 of each to split amongst the table. Makes me wonder about the Mondavi winery - sounds like I must make another trip back to Napa! read more

Krug Winery hosted Andrea Bocelli on Saturday, June 21, 2025. I spent over $3400 for what were to be assigned seats near the front of the stage. Sometime before the show, an elected official was to be in attendance and the stage was moved and my assigned seats were removed. When my fiancé and I arrived, we were told we were being moved...to horrible, cheap seats toward the rear of the venue. No refund, no compensation for these "cheaper seats." Nothing! This was basically theft!! You took my money and gave me something of considerably lesser value. Charles Krug Winery, the production company and Andrea Bocelli should be ashamed!! read more

Most people outside of Napa probably do not realize that Charles Krug is the original Mondavi winery, and the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley. Founded in 1861 by a German winemaker named Charles Krug, public tastings opened in 1882 making it California's first tasting room! The winery was purchased by an Italian immigrant, Cesare Mondavi in September of 1943 and is one of the last family owned wineries in the region. What's more is that when you pull into the winery, the winding driveway is flanked by olive trees and if you look closely, on your right are the homes where the Mondavi family grew up in. Now, the elephant in the room is definitely the tragic family quarrel between Cesare Mondavi's sons, Peter and Robert. A quarrel occurred between the two over the direction of the winery that included a fistfight and Robert's ouster from Charles Krug in 1965. Since then, the winery has been run by Peter's family (he had two sons Peter Jr. and Marc), and his family has really honored the Mondavi legacy and commitment to family and excellent wine without selling out by producing consistently amazing wines. Let me pause here and add that sadly there are no Mondavis involved at Robert Mondavi Winery. But that's another story. With that out of the way, the Charles Krug estate is amazing. During before COVID (B.C.) times, you could enjoy tastings inside the beautiful tasting room that always had this amazing bouquet of flowers. For members, you could even do tastings in the "library" which is a special room that honors Peter Mondavi. Also during B.C. Charles Krug had this amazing event called Tastings on the Lawn which began in 1951 that would invite wine and food enthusiasts to the winery to drink quality vino, eat great food, listen to live music, and even meet the Mondavis. This is when they open up the amazing carriage house at the southern portion of their estate. At 2019's Tastings on the Lawn, my wife and I even got to chat with Peter Mondavi Jr. who ended up sabering some brand new sparkling wines Charles Krug launched as well as Janice Mondavi, the wife of Marc Mondavi. While speaking with Janice, she asked what I did for work and that was how I found out that she had been on the Regional Water Quality Control Board. For those that don't know what this is, there are nine regional boards across California that protects water quality. So, to find out that she was interested in the watershed and groundwater and knew about this was impressive to me since grapes need water to grow. What is more impressive is that she is just one of the many women involved in Charles Krug. She has four daughters that are all involved and Peter Mondavi Jr. has a daughter that is also involved. On top of that, the current winemaker is Stacy Clark. I think this is what makes Charles Krug so great. The family aspect as well as having women involved in the decision making process! You see, my wife is the CEO and CFO of my household. Beginning in the late 1990s, Charles Krug began focusing on Bordeaux grapes and decided to focus on just a handful of wines, focusing on Cabernet, Cabernet blends, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc as well as choosing quality over quantity. Peter Mondavi never sought the limelight and was very family-oriented and his proudest accomplishment was never losing control of the family winery. I think that this quality is what makes Charles Krug so amazing and what makes his legacy continue. With his grandchildren involved in the process, this Fourth Generation will continue making great wines. We just have to hope that climate change and the annual fires in Napa can somehow be controlled. * Due to COVID, tastings are done outside only by appointment only and no outside food or drinks are allowed.
