We visited Monticello Winery in Napa Valley on Tuesday, April 7th as part of the Wine Trolley tour, and it was one of the highlights of our day. The winery has a beautiful, welcoming atmosphere with classic Napa charm, and the staff Alicia, made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The tasting experience was relaxed, informative, and enjoyable. We appreciated learning about the winery's history and the winemaking process while sampling a fantastic selection of wines. Every pour was excellent, but the Cabernet Sauvignon really stood out. The grounds were stunning, and the smaller, more personal feel of the winery made the visit even more memorable compared to some of the larger tasting rooms in Napa. If you're visiting Napa Valley -- especially on the Wine Trolley tour -- Monticello Winery is definitely worth the stop. We would happily return on our next trip! read more

I recently had one of the greatest experiences in Napa with Gustavo at Monticello Vineyard. The wine was great but Gustavo was what pushed this experience over the top. As a born and raised local to Napa, Gustavo offered a different perspective about wine that you wouldn't get elsewhere. On top of that he was knowledgeable with his flavor profiles and really help led my girlfriend and I through a wonderful tasting experience. I highly recommend booking a wine tasting here just for Gustavo alone. We did the classic flights, which if you aren't a heavy reds drinker like me, is the perfect choice for the experience. The wine tasted great and we had a great time. As the last two groups of the day and probably the only few groups after the holidays, we had the opportunity to drink straight out of the barrel. This was something I've never done and Gustavo gave us the honor to experience and taste the difference between wines at a different stage of their fermentation process. This was super educational and such a great experience. As for Monticello Vineyard itself, it's a fairly small property compared to the other wineries but because it's so small the experience is more intimate. The property can be walked in five minutes and unfortunately the vineyards iconic building is going through some renovations. We will definitely be coming back here in the summer to enjoy the beautiful views that Monticello offers. Please do yourself a favor and either try a walk-in here at Monticello or do a reservation with Gustavo. You won't regret it. Oh and say hello to marshmallow and char for me. read more

After wine train fun!!! Wooohooo! When you book with the Wine Train, you get the opportunity to add a package on. This package is called Sweet Treat. One of the items in this package is a 2 for 1 tasting at Monticello Vineyards. So, after we had great fun on the wine train... we decided to move the party to Monticello Vineyards. The grounds are amazing! You can see the Vineyards up close and personal and see the mountains in the not so distance. Parking: They have a parking lot not too far from the tasting room. The short walk makes for a nice stroll through the grounds. You also pass the restrooms on the way! The Service: Great weather and an awesome day for an outdoor tasting. Gus was our host. He was amazing and knowledgeable about each wine poured. The Wines: I opted for the tasting with the Chardonnay, which is the only white they produce. As our first wine, I must say, that it was one of the best Chardonnay's I've had this visit. It was so refreshing. We went on to try a Pinot Noir and a few Cabernet Sauvignons. I was quite surprised because I am not usually a Cab drinker, but these were sooooo good. They all were, smooth finishes, not too dry. It's no wonder these are award winning wines! The first stop on our Napa Valley Wine Trolley tour was Monticello Vineyards, and it set the bar high! Gustavo was our tasting host and took us on a tour of the grounds (not too much walking; very accessible!), machinery, back to see the barrels, and into the tasting room. Couldn't have asked for a better wine tasting experience. Booked a last minute tasting that far surpassed expectations. Upon arrival, staff made us feel like family in moments. I treated my parents to a Napa trip recently and we had the best time. Monticello was one of our stops. The grounds were beautiful. Tons of greenery and lovely sitting areas with shade to enjoy the views. The weather was perfect and there were nice fountains so the ambiance was great. We did the red tasting and all of the wines were nice and paired really well with the cheeses. Our host was super knowledgeable about the wines and walked us through the process and how all the different soils on their property can change the flavors of the wine. They definitely have a great product and selectionof reds. We even got to try a red from 1998 at the end. Definitely come here for a nice relaxing tasting outside. 3.5 star 3 stars for the wine as they tend to be a bit thin and light in texture, but 4 star for service and the cozy ambiance in the lawn enjoying the wine. Their vine covered wall is also great for photo backdrop, which we absolutely love. We had to book ahead for the visit and it's prepaid, $45 per tasting of a flight, all wine were from grapes grown on the estate. Monticello Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery that has been harvesting and bottling their estate grown wines for over fifty years in the Oak Knoll District of the Napa Valley. Their signature Jefferson House which was built in the early 1980's is no doubt intended to signify the connection to the winery's namesake. After participating in one wine tasting in northern Napa Valley, a friend and I were looking to make one last stop at another winery before we headed home, and after doing a little research on what was on the way home we found that the Estate Tasting Flight for 45 dollars which paired some on Monticello Vineyards best wines with a cheese, charcuterie and cracker platter was one of the best deals in the region. Located off of Big Ranch Road right in between the St. Helena Highway and the Silverado Trail, it was very easy to find Monticello Vineyards as parking was plentiful. They had plenty of seating in the grassy lawn area in between their tasting room and production facility, and their aforementioned Jefferson House, which also provided for much needed restrooms while we enjoyed our afternoon of wine tasting. After selecting a patio table in which we were to enjoy our wine tasting and pairing, we opted for their Tasting Flight which for forty-five dollars gave us the opportunity to five of their signature wines alongside a tasting platter filled with freshly sliced charcuterie including salami, cheeses including cheddar, brie and swiss, and crackers from Rustic Bakery. Kojito served as our friendly and very informative tasting room associate who guided us through our entire tasting flight by explaining where each wine we tried was sourced and what pairing suggestion they would recommend with each wine. We began with their 2019 Chardonnay, which was sourced right here on their Monticello Vineyard estate, and with a crisp fruit flavor and rich golden tones is the perfect wine to enjoy in the summertime with a fresh plate of figs or other stone fruit. Our second wine was their 2018 Pinot Noir, which was also sourced here on their estate in the Oak Knoll region. Kojito recommended pairing this wine with a nice oil based protein such as roasted duck, thanks to the wonderful taste of burgundy, which is what brought their winemaker to seek out these vineyards in the first place. For our third pour, we enjoyed one of my personal favorites, thanks to its versatility, was their 2019 Jefferson Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon, which was sourced throughout the Napa Valley. With notes of black cherries and licorice, this Cabernet would pair nicely with any pork, chicken or barbecued meat dish. For our fourth wine pour, we enjoyed their 2017 Corley Proprietary Red Wine, which was a part of their higher wine series, and was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot and had a nice spiciness on the palate that lingers throughout the finish. Uniquely, Kojito recommended pairing this wine with a quail or squab based entrée. For our fifth and final pour, we enjoyed their 2018 Corley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon which had a nice balance to it as it easily would pair nicely with any steak entrée. We had a wonderful time enjoying the warmth of the Oak Knoll region of the Napa Valley as there was a gentle breeze that we felt as we sipped and savored all five wines while enjoying a wine pairing with crackers, cheese and charcuterie. I can only imagine what the winery's founder, Jay Corley saw in the vast property when he began searching for an appropriate site to harvest Burgundian style wine grapes. He clearly saw early on what so many others would eventually see in this particular region of the valley as the cooler temperatures have produced some wonderful world class wines with beautiful colors and bold flavors where history and tradition reign supreme. read more

Monticello Vineyards was a quaint little winery that very much mirrored the Monticello estate of Thomas Jefferson in Virginia. My party and I came here on a sunny/overcast Saturday in September following the recent heatwave. With our reservation online we did not have to wait to be seated, however, it did take a while for our server to come around and start serving us our flight. We opted for the Reserve Tasting which went for $60 per person as well as the charcuterie board that was $25. As one who does not frequent wineries nor is an avid consumer of wine, my overall experience was just fine. For me the wines were nothing spectacular or anything to rave about, but our server made the experience for us. Our party had a lot of questions about the process of how wine is made, what skin-contact time is, aging in the barrel vs in the bottle, tannins, and so much more. Our server, whose name I wish I remembered, was able to explain everything in fine detail and more -- from how to properly pour wine to the science of decanting older wines. Another aspect that elevated our experience was the estate itself. As I said before, this place is quaint and homey! The downsides of Monticello that I found was in the explanations of the wines, it seemed that the goal of Monticello was elegance in its wines. Our server explained why French barrels were used instead of American barrels and it was to "be more classy and elegant" plus "wine made in French barrels tend to be more expensive, " they said. Personally, it's difficult for me to taste the differences in "elegance" between the wines in our Reserve Tasting other than that the tannins in our wines kept getting stronger and stronger the older the wine was. Another aspect of Monticello that I didn't find too appealing was the charcuterie board. The first thing that came to my mind was "that's it?" It was a tiny little thing with very little cheese, meats, and crackers. For us to be paying $25 for this spread did not seem justifiable, but I guess that's the premium you pay for being in Napa. I was a bit disappointed with our experience here. Our host was great but he failed to mention there was a 2 for 1 deal for military, after I even told him I was in the military. I found out after leaving. I called the management and they couldn't even track our transaction while we were there, even though I gave them the name, date, and time. The lady made it sound like I was inconveniencing them, when they're the ones that messed up in the first place. I didn't enjoy the wines much either so I won't be coming back. On the bright side, it is a lovely place and they have some cats that live on the property that were really fun to play with and watch. read more

My wife and I visited Monticello as part of a Trolley Wine tour. They had a deal on the Rose if you bought 3 bottles for $100.00 and one $50.00 tasting fee would be waved. We purchased the 3 bottles of rose. the bottles were in a box AMS put into a bag by the cashier we never looked at them. When we got back to our hotel we realized that we got 3 bottles of Cabernet. Not our favorite but decide I would drink it.Tried to opem the first bottle and the cork crumbled.could not get the majority of the cork out of the bottle. Tried the second bottle to find it similar I did get it out in a hundred pieces and had to filter the wine through a coffee filter to be able to drink it. I contacted Monticello and they indicated the gave us 27 year old Cab in error and that the issue with the corks was due to me not knowing how to use a cork screw on a cork that old. Their first response was to ask where we were staying making seam as though they would swap the wine at our hotel. i received a second email again telling me I don't know how to use a cork screw and these bottles are worth $300.00 each and I need to come to their winery to swap out. I am 63 years old and opened hundreds of bottles of wine, nobody could open these with a regular cork screw could open these with out them disintegrating. A replica of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate doesn't exactly scream "Napa Valley" but it lends to the quirkiness of your experience here. This is a family winery which feels like it couldn't give a hoot about the latest trends in Napa Valley style and the more I think about that comment, the greater my fondness for the place. From its simple tasting room staffed not by GQ models and pretty young things, right through to its basic tables and chairs on the lawn near that Monticello replica, this winery is beating its own drum. A tasting flight featuring 5 wines runs $35 per person (a definite nod to 2019 in Napa Valley) but traveling with the CellarPass Passport gets you this tasting at no cost at all. Naturally, that's what brought me here but it worked; I enjoyed the experience, purchased a bottle (2014 Oak Knoll Pinot Noir, $48 less 10% with yelp check-in), and am here on yelp basically advertising the place. Monticello Vineyards is situated at the far southern end of Napa, enjoying a strong cooling influence from fog, bay, and ocean breezes. As a result, the area can be a nice refuge in summer, when temperatures here average 10 degrees cooler than in nearby St. Helena. Even better, zoning restrictions prevent many Napa Valley wineries from being able to sell visitors a glass or a bottle of wine to drink on-site. Here at Monticello, there are no such restrictions. A shared bottle on the lawn during a sweltering day elsewhere might be a perfect excuse to visit. One caveat though, for those who won't be consuming a bottle on-site: The same wine retailing here for $48 can be found on-line (and possibly in a store near you) for as low as $33. Like everywhere else in the area, though it's fun to leave a winery with a purchase, you'll likely pay a premium for doing so. Monticello isn't unique in this practice but it's a practice worth being aware of. Monticello Vineyards is a hybrid-sampler of how things once were in the Valley. Visit for the wines, of course, and for a less glam experience than other area wineries may be selling. read more

Overall the property is nice. Upon entering the winery the hospitality is poor as I didn't have a reservation for a tasting. I was a walk-in looking for open sitting which I called prior and was advised they had plenty of availability. The hostess displayed poor service. She or the gentlemen with her working didn't show me where the open sitting was located and nothing about the options. I will highlight that John (our waiter) provided the best experience about this place. He was very helpful and knowledgeable about the winery. I purchased two bottles to sit outside and enjoy what they call the "Grove" area. The wine was palatable and improved with every sip. I would visit again and purchase a bottle. Such a pretty vineyard with flowers everywhere that make the environment 10x more aesthetically pleasing. My friends and I signed up for the wine tasting, there were 5 wines that were very nice. Our host was really sweet as well. After the tastings, we walked around the vineyard. There's a cat named Marshmallow that's friendly. One of the houses was modeled as a replica of the real Monticello in VA because the owner loved Thomas Jefferson. Very cool! Highly recommend visiting this vineyard! read more

Worst winery experience we've ever had. We made a reservation for a bottle purchase, since there were no tastings available. We were looking forward to enjoying a nice bottle of wine with charcuterie. As soon as we arrived, we were escorted to the bench area where there was no music, people, or service. Not only did our waiter not know anything about the wine or the cheese board, but he did not check on us once. The $25 charcuterie board included a bulk brand of trail mix with fake chocolate. NOT a $25 board at all. There was no experience factor to being here. He also informed us that we had to close out our check immediately because it was going to be getting busy. We understood, and closed out. 1 hour later, and the place is empty. No rush of reservations, nothing. We felt completely unwelcomed, demoted, and utterly disappointed. Came here on a leisurely drive to Napa. There was a large sign outside of the vineyard and we drove up and parked. We walked to the tasting room and were greeted by a friendly associate and asked if we were interested in a tasting. We were, and she proceeded to give us two different tasting menus; the first was a tasting that included a rose, chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot, and sirah that were on the lighter side of robustness and weren't very dry (which I hate) with a slight sweetness. The second tasting menu included all of the above, but there were bolder (which was not my thing, for now). I chose the first tasting menu. We were welcomed to sit at any table in the outdoor garden, and it was a beautiful day to boot! As I finished my tastings, the attendant came out to pour the next one and gave a brief history of that particular wine. They also provided complimentary breadsticks to nosh on during our tasting. The wines here are all grown and bottled here. Also, the home where Thomas Jefferson is affiliated with is on site as well (don't believe tours are available, but check when you get here). I was encouraged to tour the vineyard and got awesome pictures! One of the wines was so tasty, I purchased a bottle to bring back home. We were escorted to a outdoor area, and marveled the views to include the hills, vineyards and the Colonial architecture of the main building, resembling Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate in Virginia. Took a spontaneous weekend trip to Napa with our dog with nothing planned. Found Monticello on BringFido.com along with a few other dog-friendly vineyards. Monticello was a favorite for myself, hubby and Jax. The vineyard itself had so much grass and land that Jax was able to roam freely off-leash without us worrying he'd get hit by a car. Lots of flowers to sniff and shade to keep us cool. There was a dog bowl with water which he kept running to also. I really appreciate how nice they were to Jax and not strict about putting him on a leash so we felt good about him having fun there too. Since dogs aren't allowed to walk around indoor, we had our wine tasting outside which was even more lovely. The tasting was much more than we expected; Todd was a wealth of knowledge taking us through the history of the vineyard as well as the history of wine itself. It was a pleasant change from the other wineries we went to where the only thing said to us was what they were pouring. Todd also gave us a tour of the amazing estate and the stories behind it (I won't spoil it for you). Todd hands down made this experience memorable for us and is one of the top wine educators I've ever met. I love how knowledgeable and entertaining he is yet not snobby so I didn't feel turned off by him when I didn't know answers to his fun trivia questions. Really glad we met him! The wines were devine! I wish we went here first because we would have been much more pleased purchasing the wine here than the other winery we went to first. We purchased the Pinot, which I instantly loved as soon as I tasted it. It's been awhile since I've instantly fell in love with a wine; it's that amazing. We found ourselves with some extra time to kill between wine tastings while in Napa Valley for a bachelorette party so we started driving around looking for something to do. We stumbled upon Monticello Vineyards when we saw their sign that said they do daily tastings. Although we were arriving salty due to some snooty business we experienced at a different winery, it was quickly washed away as Jeremy took us under his wing and treated us like queens. Jeremy set us up with a large table under a an even larger umbrella with a pitcher of water right away. Very accommodating staff. We didn't have a reservation and wanted to go wine tasting after lunch on a Saturday. Called and was told we weren't able to do a tasting but we're welcome to come and buy a bottle and enjoy it on their grounds. She also asked which bottle we wanted so they can put it aside for us. Was seated in a quaint area with picnic style tables. Their grounds are so pretty, you can walk around and take photos also. Only giving it a four stars because their Chardonnay was average, but they kindly had it chilled and waiting for us before we arrived. read more
