This Winery blew my mind. So Napa California makes me think of hundred dollar wine flights, weird dresses and floppy hats. Not the Terraces Winery. Totally different vibe. First things first, we jump on an ATV and head out to the vineyard. Our girl Madeleine takes us all around. This is a family affair folks. Dad is the wine maker. We will meet him later. We learn all the facts. They are the only cidery in Napa. We call this versatile. If you don't like wine, problem solved. They'll give you cider. I was sold quick quick because I bought three bottles. We also learned that this family makes balsamic vinegar. Not the type you buy in the store. This is the 25 year commitment stuff. Their vinegar is older than some marriages. Let that sink in. They're only in year three so this vinegar is not available to me and you yet. Stay tuned. Amazing experience! We went for a tasting and the ATV tour. It was $90 per person which was waived if you sign up for the club or take home three bottles. Good variety of wines, not just Cabernets. We were able to meet the owners who came around and introduced themselves. This was by far our favorite tasting experience of the weekend, and felt very intimate and friendly. My family went here for a Napa Trip and we had a really good time. It's $90 per person for a tasting which is quite high but if you enjoy the wine then you can have the tasting fee waived if you purchase 3 bottles. The service was good and the ambiance was really nice. You start the tour with a balsamic vinegar tasting, then you get driven up in an atv to see an old stone room, and finally at the end you taste the wine. One point of criticism i'd make is that they should change the timing of when guests try their wine. Instead they should welcome you with a glass upon arrival, then another glass at the stone room, and the last two-three at the final tasting. This was a seriously delightful tasting! I was looking for a new winery that I've never tried and stumbled across this gem. If you are looking for a small family winery with a boutique feel, The Terraces may be the place for you! There are positives and negatives to wineries like this -- the best thing is the intimate, homey vibe. You literally taste the wine while standing around the working kitchen of a house. Appointments are required and necessary for tastings, so call as far ahead as possible. You'll have to use the call button intercom at the gate when you arrive at the property. When we pulled up, hostess Monica met us in the driveway to escort us to the proper location for our tasting. It was like visiting a friend's home. Since this is a tiny little operation, we were able to see the employees hard at work (it's crush time after all). We were even able to taste some grapes straight out of their bins! Monica led us upstairs to the main house where there was a nice set-up of two glasses and several bottles of wine, along with price sheets, pens and paper for tasting notes, and a dump bucket (sadly lots of wineries don't provide those unless you ask, which may make some folks uncomfortable). I really appreciate when wineries provide these things because that shows me they are a place for real wine lovers. I normally carry my own notebook and pen but I had left it in the hotel room so the pen and paper definitely came in handy. We tasted with the owners and employees who wandered in and out during their busy workday. That was so much fun! We talked about Burning Man with Timm the winemaker, waxed poetic about food, and of course chewed the fat about wine. The wines here were very good, with the Zinfandel and Spotted Cow dessert wine being truly exceptional. I loved that the wines were lovingly crafted with care but their prices weren't in outer space. This is what wine drinking and wine making should be all about: good, tasty wines at reasonable prices. There's no $185 Cabernet here. Best of all, their reasonable $25 per person tasting fee is waived with a two bottle purchase. Even if you are on a budget, a two bottle per person purchase won't break the bank: most wines hovered in the $30 to $60 range. We left with a little over half a case because the wines were such an excellent value. The only (very minor) negatives I can think of are that if you are new to wine tasting and the Napa Valley in general, a small tasting experience like this may make you a bit uncomfortable. Remember that spitting or dumping is NOT a sign that you do not like the wine! If you feel weird about that, you need to get over it! We dumped almost everything in our glasses but purchased a lot of wine here. Nobody will take offense, they will see it as a sign that you are a serious taster. Also, you may feel intimidated when the winemaker is tasting his wine right next to you. This didn't bother us at all but I thought I should mention it for newbies. LOVED every thing about The Terraces! You had to have a reservation to visit and some major wine-o friends of ours set this one up for us. This was our last stop while in Napa and the best way to end our anniversary trip! We buzzed in at the gate and as we parked a man met us at the car. I wish I remembered his name because he was absolutely awesome! It was neat to pull up to just a few parking spots next to what looked like a large home. He greeted us by name, and took us inside. As we walked by a guy who seemed to be playing with all kinds of beakers they explained he was working on their cider that wouldn't be available for awhile. We went upstairs essentially into a large kitchen/ living room. The gentleman poured us water and explained that this was the owners original house and now is their tasting room. He poured us a glass of wine and lead us outside on the deck which had ample seating. The view over the vineyard was gorgeous. It was by far the most relaxed wine tasting experience I've ever had. We tried a few wines and he spoke well about each, the history of the vineyard and how they harvest some and sell a portion to other wineries. After a few tastings he took us on a quick ride around the vineyard, showed us where they were making balsamic vinegar (delicious) and how it wouldn't be ready for a little while longer. They also have a members house on property you can rent with 3 bedrooms for $600/night. We loved the wines and decided to join their wine club. We have since received 2 wine shipments and love to share with family and friends. Our friends swear by their zin which is good but I LOVE their Cabernet Sauvignon! Great wines and very personal attention as our group of 3 was the only party on property at the time of our impromptu visit. The wine tasting on the back deck was filled with good conversation about the winery and the art of farming. Every wine we tasted was excellent. The wines were very pleasing and approachable from a price point. This winery produces only 3,500 cases per year. You won't find it on the shelves at home. My review is going to be slightly bias as I've become friends with the owners of the winery. I met them at Burning Man in 2014. Yes, they're burners. This winery and the property that it's located on, are magical. The tasting room is more like a living room. It's comfortable and inviting. And you'll see Burning Man books on the coffee table, and lots of beautiful pieces of art throughout the room. This is not a typical walk up winery, taste and leave. This is an appointment only winery. So be sure to call ahead. And plan to enjoy the surrounding beauty and buy some wine. The Zin is to die for, and really the Cab... Can we talk about the Cab... OMG. The CAB! It's so good. I can't... I just can't. Timm and Sharon are the winery owners/makers. And let me tell you Timm has his hands in their making his wine. He's not some over the top wine owner that doesn't get his hands dirty. He loves to work on the property, and water the plants, and enjoy the beauty. I love how into the land he is. And it shows. I almost forgot to mention the seating area outside the tasting room. He's got a gorgeous deck/patio to sit and enjoy the sun and sip on some sweet wine. My visit at Terraces was very enjoyable and I would recommend going here for a tasting and tour. You really need to include the tour because they show you some pretty neat stuff. There is the old ghost winery which was cool and the balsamic house where they are aging their balsamic vinegar. You get to taste a sample and it was delicious. They don't sell it yet as it's not fully aged, but I'm sure once they do start selling it will sell out quickly! The wine tasting was very enjoyable too. While we were tasting the owner Tim came over and sat down with us. It was great because he was covered in dirt from harvesting. He was talking with us and even brought us a barrel sample in his wine glass after tossing out whatever he was drinking before. What a cool little winery! They are tucked back off Silverado trail but from the road you may have recognized them by the pink polka dotted mail box (which got knocked down) and the polka dotted cow on their hill. This is a small winery made up of basically 4 people Tim and Sharon the husband and wife owners, Dominic the assistant wine maker and Monica... They are all super down to earth and approachable and friendly! The property is stunning and their wines are all so hands on and delicious. I had no idea what to expect as we had never had their wines and we left very happy! They do both reds and whites but it does depend on the yield from their vineyards. But do a tasting and pick up a few bottles!! Also their tasting room is super eclectic and we loved their art!! Really a nice spot with super nice people!!! Such a sweet find in Napa valley. They really care about the products they produce. Also if you get a chance get the short tour to see their labor of love...the balsamic vinegar. It's not released but oh my when it is..... This place not only has great wine ... The people that work there are just very warm, hospitable, and go way above and beyond the call of customer service! I payed them a visit today to pick up my release club bottles of wine and Ryan really took care of us. I've been a member of other high end wineries and sometimes even if you're a member of their club they still don't treat you exceptionally well. The Terraces on the other hand, whether you're a member or not, they treat you exceptionally well. I quit the other high end wineries and joined this one earlier this year because of their people, their wine, and their home grown balsamic vinegar! Enough said! If you find yourself in Rutherford, make this a stop! You will not be disappointed! Almost six months ago now, my gal pals and I arranged a birthday kidnapping that involved visiting several napa wineries and a lot of giggling. In any case, I called ahead to the Terraces for a private tasting. They graciously gave me an appointment time and the gate code. Let me tell you, birthday gal was highly intrigued when I pulled up to an unmarked gate and entered the code. We got a private introduction to their current releases from the assistant winemaker. The standouts (for me) were their '05 Zin and an '06 Chardonnay. Normally, I'm not a fan of California Chards, but the Terrace's don't over-oak it and it stayed nice and crisp. Additionally, we hopped in the 4WD and drove a whopping 100 feet to a little outbuilding where they're making balsamic vinegar. Tasting out of the traditional-style barrels... makes you pucker a bit, but it's delicious. Officially the private tasting is $10 per person, but it's waived with purchase of wine. At that time, the bottles ranged from $28 to $48. read more

This is officially my favorite winery in Napa Valley! I generally stick to the Sonoma side of wine country, bc I like to stay away from the bustling tourism and overly decorous feeling of most Napa wineries. But, I happened upon this winery in an online forum about Zinfandels, and it's given me a reason to start visiting Napa again! Not only is the wine (particularly the Zinfandel and Chenin Blanc), some of the most delicious and well-priced that I've had in Napa Valley, but the vibe of this place is just outstanding. On my 2nd visit, I found out that the owners (Timm and Sharon - who were awesome enough to personally greet and chat with my friend and me) are a couple who has been going to Burning Man for the past 12 years. This was a revelation as to why their tasting room and vineyard have such an artfully understated, relaxed, and inviting atmosphere. Ryan, their Kiwi winemaker, was the clincher to an overall fantastic visit, and we had great conversation throughout a tour of the vineyard and tasting of their 18-year "barrel-aging" balsamic vinegar, from the comfort of a golf cart. So I have not reviewed this place because I selfishly wanted to keep it to myself. I have visited several times now and I love the vibe of this place. So laid back and easy going - all the while with great wines. I am a ribbon winning competition BBQ cook in Kansas City, and Terraces zin is the only wine I will serve with my food when I am back in KC - for whatever that is worth. As others has mentioned, Nate is great host. I recommend taking an hour out of your napa visit and kicking back, drinking some great wine and cruising around their property in the golf cart. read more

Husband and Wife owned (and they're fantastic, Timm's chef skills are killer) this little gem is tucked away in the hills- I nearly miss the driveway every time. Monica was our guide - first driving us around in an ATV to see the grounds and sample the newly aging balsamic vinegar (totally unexpected). We then sat on the beautiful porch and tasted delicious wines. We had the chance to meet Tim, the owner and wine maker, who was personal and informative. Quite simply the best Zin south of St. Helena. This little hidden gem is very easy to miss while whizzing past on Silverado Trail. But don't overlook this one. You won't be disappointed. Such a lovely experience! Jorge was a very gracious host and we loved all the art in the tasting room. So often whites in Napa are meh but we liked theirs a lot, and the reds were great. It is a small winery and it was a very intimate experience - only one other group there when we were there, even though it was a Saturday. You definitely cannot show up without a reservation.
