We had heard of the Educated Guess wines and had no idea that this was the place that makes those, so it was pretty exciting. Found out about this place on the app Tock, while looking for an impromptu place to go wine tasting near downtown Napa, and it turned out to be such a hidden gem! The Tock app is great for finding last minute available reservations in the Napa area, I probably would not have been as likely to hear about this place. When we got in, it was empty and our experience felt so special being the only ones in there. The seating was also nice with a homey but aesthetic feel. Joe took great care of us and explained all of the wines so well, it really enhanced the experience -- by the end we even felt convinced to buy a bottle! Probably one of the most relaxed and intimate wine tasting experiences we've ever had. Amber was attentive, knowledgeable and just a joy to guide us through our tasting. I had the opportunity to experience the Hypothesis cab some years ago and finally made it a point on our most recent Napa trip to book this tasting. We opted to sit inside the living room area and throughout the whole tasting, we felt like we were in someone's home where they were just delighted to share their bottles of wine with us. My SO and I opted for one each of the tasting so we got to experience all the wines they're currently pouring and in addition to the Hypothesis cab, the Roberts Road Pinot Noir and the Scholar were stand outs. One of the cutest homes turned into a wine tasting space. Loved that they had several different spaces to choose from. We came in early November before the lockdown and it was a super cute spot near downtown Napa. We opted for the study to do our tasting, the only bad thing was that it was next to the bathroom so people kept walking past us, some were unmasked. One of our friends is a sommelier so we tried the beginners tasting and she got the advanced one. Each one came with 5 wines from Chardonnay's to cabs. I do have to say the Chardonnay and one of the cabs were my faves. I'm not an expert with wine tasting but majority of the ones here are well known for their reds. The server did not serve wine properly at the tasting. Instead of pouring each glass of wine one at a time, the server brought out all 5 wines at the same time. In terms of etiquette, generally it is best practice to pour the wine from the bottle in front of the customer - as it is the custom to do the same for friends or guests at a dinner party. Instead of pouring the wine from the bottle, our server poured 3 out of 5 glasses in the back and brought it out to the front porch. This is generally improper. Okay...I first tried the orange label cab sav about 8 months ago. I found it in a small shop in Sunriver Oregon and loved the label...I know a great indicator of which wine is good... Fast forward to today and I'm on a two week solo road trip and veered off to the right at the split in the 80 freeway and took the Napa transition...as I looked as traffic heading the opposite direction I decided to stay in Napa for some wine tasting. Well Educated Guess was the second or third place to show up and I remembered how much I loved their wine. Manny, thank you so much for your hospitality. Two wineries in one? I have whiplash just thinking about it, but Roots Run Deep Winery and Jamieson Ranch Vineyards have proven two wineries can operate out of the same location and still provide sumptuous varietals at an affordable price point. I came with friends who were intrigued with the location of Jamieson Ranch, which resides in an unassuming area where Southern Napa and American Canyon converge, directly off of Highway 29 and is just a few miles from Interstate 80, not even realizing that Roots Run Deep and Jamieson Ranch shared the same tasting room. In the shadow of the Atlas Ridge and across the street from the Chardonnay Golf Course, Roots Run Deep is living up to its name as a working man's winery with humble beginnings. Here, they've succeed in their goal of producing wines that can compete with the big boys who sell their wines at a much higher price point but offer the exact same aromatic flavor composition and style of varietals that any wine lover can appreciate and not have to drive all the way up Highway 29 deep into the valley. They can get one of the best wine tastings in the region right here. I love the names of the labels here at Roots Run Deep Winery. They have a fun play on words including Educated Guess, Hypothesis, Higher Education and Bound and Determined. With that first label Educated Guess they want to show they are using knowledge, intuition, and years of experience to make the best possible decisions; however, at the end of the day, everything remains an "Educated Guess." With the flight they serve you get four samplings from the Educated Guess label and one from their Hypothesis label. The 2015-16 Carneros Chardonnay, 2016 Carneros Pinot Noir, 2015-16 Napa County Merlot, and their 2016 Napa County Cabernet Sauvignon. And from their Hypothesis, we tried the 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Our tasting room associate Sydney was so nice to us, she even poured an extra bottle from their Reserve Tasting: the 2014 The Ph.D. Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine was well-structured with their own unique flavors of varying degrees of fruit, chocolate complimented with a nice oakey finish that provided a long aftertaste. Coupled with a gorgeous view of the vineyards it was an experience that could not be matched. Sydney, our tasting room associate, was very attentive and constantly filled our water glasses, as we carefully took our time as my group took look long sips and gazingly looked out on the verdana. It really easy to get there right off of Highway 12 with Napa Valley's interchange on the way to Interstate 80 and Fairfield. Reservations are not required but the place since Jamieson Ranch wine lovers are no doubt staking their claim out there on that patio each and every day. With great and attentive service, not to mention some mighty fine wines, Roots Run Deep Winery has tried to do all the guesswork for their customers and produce rich, yet balanced wines you can buy for the money! Had an amazing time here. We had Tony as our host and he was really knowledgeable and friendly. I have to say he probably is the reason why this review is 5 stars. Him and the service he provided is exactly what hospitality is. I easily made reservations on the day of online for Roots Run Deep Winery. I actually chose the outdoor seating but it was a little breezy and Tony said we can sit indoors if we wish. He showed us different tables that we could sit at. He let us know that the larger table had a reservation for a large group but if they didn't show up we could easily move over there. Roots Run Deep Winery has two tasting menus. One costs significantly more than the other. I let Tony know my preference in wines and he said the lower cost tasting menu would probably be the better option for me. However, he did bring in a tasting from the other menu just so we can try. The only negative I would have to say about the tasting was that you couldn't order any cheese or charcuterie. We ended up bringing two bottles home. I would highly recommend making a reservation here and make sure to ask for Tony. read more

We had a reservation for their 5-wine tasting offered for those staying at the nearby Andaz Napa hotel. Our reservation was for 5pm but we were told it would be perfectly fine to stop by ahead of time as we expressed that we had another reservation for a restaurant at 5:30pm. We arrived at the tasting house (yes, it's an office house) at about 4:45pm, expecting a rushed tasting but nobody was around the front to greet us. We waited outside for a few minutes then we poked our heads inside and one of the staff members grabed the attention of the server and they confirmed our appointment on their tablet. We walked back outside with the server and were sat on the couch directly in front, by now its about 4:55pm. We sit a full 15 minutes longer, ten minutes into our tasting appointment time as other parties who arrived after us are sat and being served by both our server and the other staff member. We're then told they'll be right with us after the other team member noticed I'd pulled up walking directions to our next destination. Finally, the server who sat us approached us with the first wine but at this point, we had seen enough and decided it was best to simply cancel the reservation. When the server approached us, we expressed that it wouldn't be reasonable to do a five wine tasting in the 5 minutes of time we had left before we'd need to start walking to our next reservation. The server feigned an apology as she said she'd "hate to deliver a sub-standard tasting experience" then she contorted and gas-lit the situation, essentially pushing blame to us because we had another reservation to get to. She never acknowledged that she told us to arrive early or that she sat another couple who arrived well after us (and after the 5pm reservation time) and attended to them before even attempting to begin our tasting. In short, they disrespected our time, waisting about 35 minutes (about 20 if you're counting the exact time on the reservation). I want to emphasize again that we were told to come in early and that they would be able to accommodate our schedule (we were told this by the same server when I made the reservation). Show me another Napa tasting charging $40 a head that outright ignores their customers. They weren't even busy! I was thoroughly looking forward to this specific tasting and have long been a fan of the educated guess line. read more

The previous location had a relaxed and calm ambience but they had to change it to the busy streets of downtown. I had to cancel my reservation when I saw the new address. This place was the cutest! It is not your typical Winery... It's located near the convenience of downtown Napa. A cute little house where hospitality truly shines. We went here the day after our wedding and our wine expert was amazing and made our stop here worth while. Update: Dear Yelpers, As you can see I have been contacted by the business owner below. Fact remains that I have been paying way more than retail price for this wine and that the employee negligently misrepresented facts to us to increase sales. I don't keep receipts in general, so it's one word against the other. I also don't see why I should contact the business prior to writing a review as it's clearly designed to evaluate my experience with the business. Last, I did indeed reach out to Mark though he didn't even give me 24 hours to respond before writing below post. Original Post: Rip off!!! We went to this winery as I liked their Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon that you can buy in the open market on the East Coast, and wanted to check out their winery specialities and reserves. We ended up buying their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Hypothesis) for 50$ (!!) per bottle and were told that you could only buy that at the winery exclusively. What a lie!!! We walked into a Trader Joe's some days later and guess what, they sell the same "exclusive" wine for half the price ($29). Same vintage!! Roots Run Deep, you are a fraud!!! While in Napa recently, we noticed and ended up stopping at the Roots Run Deep Winery. This was the first time for us - at this specific winery - but we had tasted at this beautiful location before. Previously, it was a different winery altogether - including ownership and label. As we entered, we were immediately greeted and shown upstairs to the main tasting room. It was a very large tasting area with lots of wood, a really nice bar ... coupled with outdoor balcony seating (panoramic views). Our server was efficient, courteous and knowledgeable. I decided to start with the best - a Hypothesis 2014 Cabernet. This Cab had depth and complexity. Nice aromas of spice and dark chocolate. We took a bottle home. I also tried the Educated Guess Cabernet which was very good for the money. Some of that came home as well alone with 3 bottles of the Carneros Chardonnay for my wife. This establishment is located conveniently near the Chardonnay Golf Club. If you have not been there before and like wine, it is worth a stop. read more

My husband, mom, daughter and I had a lovely afternoon at Roots Run Deep. My mom uses a walker so was pleasantly surprised to see that she didn't need to climb the stairs to the front door but could instead use their wheelchair lift. Inside the beautifully remodeled 1900's home, our family sat in a sitting room on comfortable chairs, looking out the bay window at the fall colors. The wines in the flights were lovely but I, not being a red wine drinker, chose to just enjoy the Educated Guess Chardonnay. At each tasting, Amber explained the attributes of each wine. We ended up buying a case of wine which waived all of our tasting fees. It was a wonderful, relaxing afternoon and we look forward to returning. read more

Stopped here on our way to Vino Bello Timeshare. We had previously had some of the educated guess wines so we already knew that we liked their wine. So after a cross country flight into SFO, and a 1 hour drive, we decided the best thing to do was not do the tasting. Instead we bought a bottle of 2017 Educated Guess Pinot Noir and enjoyed it out on the porch. The outdoor furniture was very comfortable, the temperature was nice and there was a cool breeze ....
