This is a bouquet size wine maker but has a host of varietals. I especially enjoyed their Cabernet Sauvignons and their Sauvignon Blanc. Our host, Andy, was very informative and of course, personable as he's on a first name basis with my brother in-law who is a longtime club member. They don't serve charcuterie but they keep you hydrated with cold water. The pours were timed very casually so we didn't feel rushed to down our samples and Andy often offered us a second pour just to be sure we had enough to really judge our preferences. I did a tasting here to celebrate a friend's birthday and we had a great time! Not everyone has to do a tasting so it was nice that they were flexible. There's only host a few parties at a time and the outdoor seating is nice. The server was very friendly and the pace is slow. I am sad we didn't have time to stay longer as the atmosphere there was fantastic. Also the wines were awesome! I don't like rosés in general but THEIR rose was amazing. Salvestrin is a great option to visit! My husband and I booked a same day tasting, which is easy on a Tuesday. Peak days are Fridays and weekends per usual. Andy, the Tasting Room Manager, has been with Salvestrin for 8 years and is extremely knowledgeable about their wines. We had the loveliest visit with him! The owner's lab Stella was onsite to give us a friendly greeting as well. Salvestrin has some great options for wine clubs. I chose the Family Gems. Wife and I decided to take a drive to Napa with no planning at all just to get out of the house. We noticed a lot of the places required reservations so I decided to look up the wineries on Yelp and call each one to see if I can make a reservation. The first place I called was Salvestrin and she asked if I was nearby they can take me right away. Luckily we were less than 5 minutes away. When we arrived the lady I spoke with was waiting for us ready with the wine glasses and an outdoor seating area. It turns out she was the owner. She was great. Made us feel welcome and explained all of the wines to us. We really enjoyed the Retaggio which is their blend. My wife is not a big fan of the reds but she loved that one so much, as well as their 3D Cab, that we ended up signing up for the club. Can't wait to go back. read more

Personally, I have never found a Rose I liked & typically just snub my nose at it to opt for a Sauvignon Blanc. Well, Salvestrin changed my mind! Simply incredible and no wonder it is award-winning - just wow. All of their varietals are top-notch & getting spend some time chatting with the winemaker, Rich Salvestrin, elevated my appreciation of their wine. As Rich told me, "great people make great wine" and that is the truth. He & his family have been stewards of that property for decades & the love their put into their craft is evident in every sip. My favorite - well that is hard. It comes down to the Sauvignon Blanc which has always been one of the best in the valley (in my opinion) or their Retaggio. We decided to visit Salvestrin after reading an article about small wineries that are worth a visit. We made an appointment and stopped in on a rainy April Friday to try their wines. Our host, Andy ran out with umbrellas when he saw us coming, and we were also greeted by Olive one of the winery cats (probably the most people-friendly cat I've ever met). We sat upstairs above the winery in a nicely appointed room and learned about the 3-generations of family members to run the winery while sipping on their exquisite wines. We started with a light and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc then 2 different Malbec wines from successive years each with a unique personality and finish. We also were excited to try the 3D Cabernet (so named for the 3 daughters -the fourth generation in the wine making clan-all still too young to legally partake in this delicacy). The tasting finished with a sampling of the estate produced olive oil-a venture started by dad and the middle daughter when she wanted a horse. The tasting is not inexpensive, $45 per person, and you need to call ahead for an appointment as they are a pretty small place. They've got a wonderful outside patio where tastings are held when the weather cooperates. Definitely worth a visit to experience their warm hospitality and to try their delicious wines. read more

It was recommended by someone in Yountville and we were told that we would probably be able to walk in for a tasting. Earlier in the day, we had purchased some cheese, crackers and charcuterie snacks from Oxbo so we sat at Salvestrin, had our little charcuterie and enjoyed a tasting. What a wonderful experience. Our host was Addy. He was so knowledgeable and personable. He sat with us (at a safe distance) and we ended up staying past closing of the tasting room just drinking, chatting and enjoying ourselves. We were the only people there. The patio was small but tucked in the vineyards so he was able to point out different grapes and areas of the vineyard. He told great stories about the history of napa valley and the wine was fantastic. We will absolutely be going back here again. Next time, we will stay at the Inn there as well. read more

I surprised my wife with a private tasting at Salvestrin Winery on the morning of Friday, August 3, 2018. We had the pleasure and privilege of meeting Rich Salvestrin at a local event in 2013, and visited the winery shortly thereafter that same year. For this special event, I contacted Andy Burr who is the Tasting Room Manager and set everything up. Andy guided us through a tasting that we had with my inlaws back in 2013 and did such a wonderful job, that I wanted to contact him again to assist me this year. My wife and I traveled to Napa to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Once we arrived to the winery, we were immediately greeted by Andy on the deck area where they were just setting up for the day. Andy had us take a seat while he and a colleague finished setting the area, and immediately joined us once he was able to do so. Andy guided us through our tasting, took us on a tour of the property showing us the vineyards, explaining and showing us differences in the grapes and the plants themselves. He took us into the bottling area, then walked us over to the Guest House and took us inside and told us about the history of the winery and the guest house. It was a GREAT and WONDERFUL experience, and I appreciate all of the time and effort that Andy put in to making this a memorable experience for my wife and I!! read more

This is a winery you could return to over and over. The wine is excellent, the atmosphere is beautiful, the staff was engaging and down to earth... the whole experience is fabulous. We toured the winery in mid-October of this year. Not peak season obviously, but I was still thrilled when they were able to accommodate a last minute reservation for our group of three. I found Salvestrin solely from yelp reviews, but if I were a Robert Parker reader I'm sure I would have heard of them. Some of their wines are 90+ points, but $50 or less. Tastings are conducted outside on a well appointed patio. Granted, if you visited the winery on one of the hottest days of the year, this might be unpleasant. If you come peak season when the weather is in the 70s to 80s and the sky is a golden orange, this is an absolutely lovely experience. We got comfy in the lounge chairs, made chatty banter with our host Luke and enjoyed the ambiance of the experience. Our tasting included: 2009 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, $22 2007 Retaggio (Sangiovese, Merlot, Cab Sauv & Cab Franc Blend) $34 and, the 2006 & 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, $52 We only visited two wineries this afternoon so our judgement was (unfortunately?) not clouded by hours of libation. We purchased a case of untasted Estate Petite Sirah, based on how much we enjoyed the other wines in Salvestrin's portfolio and Luke's no-pressure sales job. The Petite Sirah received 92(?) points from Robert Parker and considering how yummy the Retaggio was, we feel pretty dang good about the purchase. I'll update my review with tasting notes after we receive the wine! Scratch that, after we pick up the wine. There's no way I'm missing out on a trip to Salvestrin. read more

I'd classify Salvestrin as a winery for people who know a little more than the average Joe about wine. There's no pretense here. No fancy sign or elaborate tasting room and no requisite wine country products for sale (thank God). Bottom line: you'd basically have to have heard of Salvestrin in order to have sought them out. We made a reservation and made this our first stop upon entering the valley. Once we figured out where the tasting room was we were met by a really nice, informative (and cute!) guy who poured us the four wines we ended up buying. The 3-D Cab was by far the best and will be a back of the cellar bottle until something celebratory comes up. Pure and simple, Salvestrin does what it does best... crafting good wine. read more

The tasting area is on a paved porch area in sight of the highway - nothing like the beautiful relaxing environments available at some of the nicer wineries in St Helena. The only shade was provided by those intractable canvas umbrellas which you can't easily move to stay in the shade. The server rarely offered up any insights or advice for the tasting. The wines themselves were not to my liking. But, as always, that's personal preference. If you think the wines here are terrific, maybe it's worth putting up with the subpar tasting experience. He is very knowledgeable about the entire process, vine to bottle, not typical from other vineyards we visited. I made an appointment at Salvestrin for our party of 8. We were seated at a lovely table on the patio, overlooking the vineyard. Eddie helped us and we found his enthusiasm to be uplifting and infectious. He went above and beyond to make sure we were all comfortable and that we were all having great time. He also let us bring a small pup to the tasting area and took photos for us. We were originally planning on doing the Legacy tasting (3 pours for $25) and due to Eddie's service, we upgraded to the Harvest tasting (5 pours for $35). Most of the people in my group are not big drinkers and we only walked away with a few bottles of their Sauvignon Blanc. We never felt any sales pressure and we enjoyed our time there. So many Napa Valley wineries have lost their charm but Salvestrin remains in the family and they treat you like family. read more

WOW! Just WOW! My husband and I have been tasting in Napa, Sonoma, Mendo, and Lake Counties for 11 years and this is a HIDDEN GEM! Years ago we tasted at some of the big names (Phelps, Staggs Leap, Markham, BV, Charles Krug, Peju, Black Stallion, etc...) but in the last two years, we have craved that personal, intimate experience and have been to William Harrison, Pine Ridge, Luna, Elyse, etc... for it's family, intimate, warmth. Salvestrin exceeded every expectation I had for tasting today! We sat with Sean and what a TREAT! Sean was absolutely WONDERFUL!!!! He sat with us and I felt like a friend, part of the family, and more than ever before wanted to become a wine club member. The wine was truly phenomenal. The way it covered my palette was a delight. I do NOT like white wine; neither does my husband, but their Sauv Blanc was just perfect. It was smooth, well balanced, fruit forward, crisp and perfect for a warm and sunny day. Most whites are aged in steel and (for me) they leave a metal (steel) taste on my palette, but this Sauv Blanc was the exact opposite. We tasted the actual fruit and not the metal. From that, we moved to the Retaggio, which was so balanced and smooth that we could not leave without buying a bottle. Our somielier, Sean, was just a delight. He was knowledgeable, kind, compassionate, warm, friendly, charming, and just a wonderful human being. We laughed together and shared memories of our family and upbringing. He made me feel more than welcome, and actually part of the family. Sean was AMAZING! I highly recommend stopping by this hidden gem and enjoying the warm ambiance this family run vineyard has to offer. They are organic and sustainable, and they are one of the original's, but not snobby. They sit on 18 acres of vines and have their own little B & B on the property. You are sure to feel welcome and part of the tight-knit family when you visit, and having a lovely host in Sean made it all the better! My husband and I had just a truly wonderful experience. We will be back the next time we come. We were so relaxed with the couches and ambiance of the beautiful blossoming trees and vines. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this place and Sean! We had some time in between winery appointments and our driver thought we would appreciate the wines at Salvestrin, so he called and got us in! I am very appreciative and glad that he did! We sampled the wines that they were pouring and they were all AMAZING!!! So much so, that Luke talked us into joining the wine club for their 3D Cabernet Sauvignon (which is only available for wine club members). We recently opened up one of the 2009 3D Cabs that was sent to us - and OMG it was unbelievable! It was described to us as the Barry Bonds of cabernet sauvignons - and did this hit the nail on the head with that description! It couldn't have been any better and more spot on as to what we like in terms of a great wine! It was BIG and luscious - and had this finish that just stayed in your mouth FOOORRREEEVVVEERRR making you anxious and eager to take another sip! If you get the opportunity to check out this winery, definitely don't hesitate to jump on the change. Their knowledge and talent shines through into making some of the best wine in the Napa Valley - and the friendliness and warm welcome you receive when arriving at their property is even more enjoyable. When you think of Napa wineries most people think of Mondavi, BV, Sterling, Beringer, Stag's Leap, V.Sattui, Coppola. All are great places to visit but they are also very crowded and not very intimate. (Cakebread and Silver Oak are also two of my favorites, not super busy since it's by appointment only.) My wife and I visited a hidden Napa gem: Salvestrin Estate in St. Helena because it had a 5 star Yelp rating. When we drove up to the winery, it was not what we expected, very quaint, much smaller in size than we used to but very intimate and cozy. We walked up the flight of stairs to the tasting room where we were greeted by Luke. (Highly recommended to make a reservation) Our wine tasting experience with Luke is exactly how I think it should be: very personable, comfortable, social, and fun. I literally felt like we were drinking wine in my living room while listening to good music. I also cannot think of the last time I had a tasting flight where each tasting was superb. Each had excellent appearance, aroma, and wonderful extended finish! Soft, smooth, delicate, well-balanced, perfect harmony! 1. 2010 Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2. 2009 Estate Retaggio (Sangiovese Blend) 3. 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon The wine tasting was $15 for the flight which Luke waived when be bought a bottle of the Retaggio and Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Mondavi, Swanson, Sterling and Coppola are synonymous with Napa. However, if you're looking for a more intimate and off the beaten path experience try Salvestrin. The vineyard has been around since 1860 and three generations of the Salvestrin Family have meticulously and sustainably kept it. We enjoyed our wine tasting experience despite being novice. Our host was very personable and made us feel comfortable. We literally felt like we were drinking wine at a friend's home and listening to good music. Price wise, it's about $15 for the flight which was about right (price range from $15-25 for a tasting, Mondavi was $25). It was waived when we bought a bottle. Our flight: - 2010 Estate Sauvignon Blanc - 2009 Estate Retaggio (Sangiovese Blend) - 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon My favorite was the Sauvignon Blanc as I prefer white. This small, family owned and operated winery offers some excellent wine in a lovely private setting where your host will likely be one of the family members. We highly recommend a visit, especially if you like premium Cabernet Sauvignon or Super Tuscans. Our tasting began with the Salvestrin 2011 Estate Sauvignon Blanc that sells for $24 and is 100% SB. 970 cases were produced. After a good lemon nose, I got some crisp grapefruit on the palate with some pleasant herbaceousness and a hint of butter rounding it out. Finish was medium length. A nice, easy to drink SB. We were told that the winery use to produce only red wines but they decided to add a white wine to help balance out their wine line up and Sauvignon Blanc was Mr. Salvestrin's favorite white. Next was the Salvestrin 2009 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon at $60. This is about 95% Cab and 5% Merlot, with the percentage varying slightly from year to year. Production is 900 to 950 cases. It is barrel aged for 24 months in 60% new oak, mostly French. It starts out with a good nose of cherry with a touch of oak. On the palate it is mostly red cherry with some baking spices. Very smooth, with well integrated tannins, a medium body and moderate length finish. Quite nice for the price. Even better was the Salvestrin 2008 Estate "3D" Cabernet Sauvignon at $125. This sees 36 months in 100% French oak. 200 cases were produced. It begins with a pronounced black cherry nose that leads to dark, ripe, black cherry on the palate with some ripe blackberry. It is very smooth with a full, lush mouthfeel but also has great tannins and spice, along with very good structure, balance and complexity. This one will go on our list of all time favorite Napa Valley wines. A wonderful Cab! We both really loved it!! The tasting that surprised us the most was the Salvestrin 2008 Retaggio at $45. (The current release is the 2010.) This is a Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and is an amazing wine for the price. This one had a great nose of cherry and oak. How pleasant to just sit and enjoy the aroma. The Retaggio is sumptuous and very full flavored. I got ripe blackberry and currents on the palate, with very good spice, excellent balance and a medium length finish. We both really enjoyed this wine! A great winery to visit. Am I the only person who didn't think that this place was that great? Salvestrin was our second tasting on our trip and we were kindly greeted as soon as we parked our car. There's a bed and breakfast right next to the winery, which looked quaint. Compared to the other wineries we visited, this one definitely ranks as the smallest as it is family owned and operated. The only seating available was outside on the patio so we were suffering the wraith of the summer heat, but at least there was a nice breeze blowing in. The tasting fee was higher than the other places we went to and the cost of the waived fee was set at $50 for a purchase of a bottle. One of the disappointments was the lack of the number of wines tasted because a few were sold out. I think we ended up tasting only three or four wines. This combined with the higher tasting fee (I think it was either $15 or $20), made for an average visit. Nobody from the group bought a bottle and we left pretty quickly after our tasting. But, I would like to say that service was great; the couple that came out to meet us were very nice and the invite-only lobster festival that they have every year sounded fun. read more

We went to this winery without reservations to do a quick tasting if possible. They were totally accomodating and both people we talked to their were really sweet. IThe winery has great feel to it, with the old houses in front of the newer barrel room the tasting area is located in the middle of their vineyard. Their wines were definately not inexpensive, but you do get what you pay for with their wines. They are solid, even robust in character with a long finish. We tasted the Rettagio 2008, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot with a little Cabernet and Cabernet Franc. They only make 3500 cases a year of this, and I would buy a case if I could. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon would be a great wine for someone special at $60 a bottle. This one can easily cellar for ten years. Only 1000 cases are made of this one. It's smooth and mellow, and good for Merlot and Pinot Noir afficiandos as well as lovers of the Cabernet Savignon wines. The last wine we tasted was the Reserve 2008 Cabernet Savignon, it was remarkable and would be a nice bottle for a graduation or something really special. read more

Salvestrin was a lovely start to our wine country getaway for valentine's weekend. We were the only people at our 10am reservation so we were given full attention by them. It's a small, family owned winery that only produces about 3,500 cases a year and bottles bi-annually. I loved our guide, who was amicable and really down to earth. The weather was perfect and we were seated at this adorable outdoor couch right next to the grape vines. We were also shown into the cellar and taught about the different machinery involved in the process. The information booklet contained a different recipe created by Susan Salvestrin to pair with each wine. We decided to go with the retaggio, which is a blend of 4 wines. I chose it because I love unique things and it also has a very sweet, consistent taste throughout the palette. This winery also gave no pressure on us to purchase wines but waived the tasting fee if we did decide to purchase. The transaction was made through an ipad, which I thought was pretty cool. I found this winery through Yelp as we were driving down the main street and feeling overwhelmed as to where to go for our first wine tasting. So glad that made U turn and pulled into this small family owned winery. We felt a bit apprehensive when we parked as the place is small and we feared feeling a little too intimate since we had no idea how a wine tasting worked. But we figured we should jus relax and head in to the cute facility up to the second floor. We were met by friendly staff and I can't recall her name but she is the lovely red head with the disarming smile. She welcomed us and gave us the history of the winery and sarted serving us the white wine. It was crisp, refreshing and enjoyable. We finally relaxed and enjoyed it, all four of the following reds to follow. She gave us a mini tour of the grounds (I was wearing heels and the ground was soft from the rain) and we went back up to finish the tasting. They are a direct consumer winery so I feel that I am getting a great deal for their wine as I am sure that when you buy wine at a shop they mark it up at least 20% not to mention if you bought it a restaurant (65-70$% mark up). We ended up taking six bottles with us and I see a future with their wine club. I recommend this for a low key tasting for people that want to explore their palate and enjoy really good wine (I believe all of their wines were 90-97 pts of wine spectator) without feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable. The Salvestrins are the nicest, coolest people and they just so happen to make really really great wine. You can tell that they have a lot of fun here and its a totally unpretentious environment [which I hear is becoming harder and harder to find in the valley]. The kids [ages 5, 10, 11] are constantly running around the vineyards and their grandparents live on property, too, so it makes for a very down home authentic family feel. Plus Rich Salvestrin is the owner/winemaker/farmer, so he's doing it all! I can't wait to arrange my next Napa trip, for a must stop on our tour will definitely be the Salvestrin Winery!! read more

As I finally get to reviewing my west coast swing, there are a few places that keep jumping out at me and my experience at Salvestrin is definitely one of them. First of all, you couldn't have asked for better weather to spend a day in Napa. So that just made the little walk around the vineyard and the brief nap I ended up taking on their outdoor patio the icing on the cake. Granted, we also had a great time since my friend did go to school with the Assistant Winemaker, which meant we got to taste several wines straight from the barrel. So with all the extra pours in addition to the tastes we got from the standard tasting (throw in the wines from our first vineyard stop), you can understand why I couldn't help but sit out in the sun and just knock out for a few minutes. Salvestrin may be a smaller vineyard, but if you're around, you should make it a definite try. read more

Salvestrin is a little winery (26 acres) that gets almost everything right. This third generation grape producer has two exceptional wines in their Cabernet Sauvignon and their amazing Retaggio which is a blended wine. They have wine tastings by appointment only and the tasting charge is waived if you purchase wines. Unlike the mega-wineries, we spent about an hour with Shannon, one of the actual owners. You sit down in their tasting room and you get to know the history of the winery and the valley as well. You get to see the passion that they bring to wine making and how integral it is to their lives. I would highly recommend that Salvestrin be part of your St. Helena wine country itinerary! read more

After our completely horrible experience at V. Sattui (go read my review!!), we had our appointment here. Cute little bed and breakfast, with nice chill vibe. Great wine. $15 for a tasting but since we were still flustered from our horrible experience, the lady comped us a tasting in hopes we would feel better. Now that's service! I'll definitely come back and try their wines again with a clearer head. And for all you cab lovers, the cab here is phenomenal! read more

I have been to Salvestrin once about 3 years ago and my parents went again about a year ago and we had great experiences. We really like their wines, and have purchased from them several times over the holiday season. Unfortunately, this visit really fell flat. We had made a reservation, but it seemed neither of the sales staff really wanted to leave the tables that they had been with prior to our arrival. The gentleman was very friendly and kept saying the female salesperson would assist us. She poured one taste for us & processed our purchase (very slowly). We were enjoying the day and view, but there was not nearly the educational experience that I had previously. I couldn't help but wonder if the perception or treatment was different because I was not with my parents (we were 3 mid 30's professionals). Salvestrin is a great winery, but this sales team really needs to step it up and learn how to better balance the 3 tables they have. We would have purchased more of the wine had we received more attention. read more
