I was kinda bummed. I really like Sephora-they carry great brands, the customer service is usually just enough (and not pushy) to pacify me, and I like being able to test things before I buy. That Saturday, I was there on a mission. After finding out the local MAC store was totally booked, I needed somewhere else to put my makeup on, as I was a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding. While I can put on everyday makeup, I never get makeup right for pictures, so I wanted someone else to worry about that for me. I made an appointment in advance by phone, and I was a little surprised that they didn't tell me where to go, who to ask for, or who I needed to check in for, so I went in a bit blind.
It is in the Manhattan Village, and I found parking right away near the men's Macy's. I went inside, and couldn't find an employee. When I did, it was a lone stock girl, who had to consistently stop what she was doing to help other customers who had questions, since there weren't sales people to be seen. I had my husband tell the cashier I was there, since I had an appointment, and I had a time frame I needed to work in. My makeup artist didn't really ask a whole lot of questions, so I felt like I had to compensate by telling her what I normally wear and what I wanted, and I had to tell her I wanted matte colors and nothing glittery. I ended up getting Temptu airbrush makeup done, in addition to heavier eyes and a red lip, which is what I was after (I'm glad I brought a reference pic!). That being said, she didn't tell me anything about the makeup she used on me, colors, brands, nothing. The way Sephora works is the makeup application is free, but you do need to purchase $50 of goods, which is easy in there. Now, as a someone who worked in retail before, an application is a perfect time to tell the customer about the makeup they are using, talk about it's good qualities, so that if they like it, they can buy it (aka, it is not rocket science). Nope, none of that-in fact, when she was done, she let me know and that was it. I had to ask what she used as eyeliner, ask where it was, ask for a basket, and find out they were out of it -_- Come on, I'm not saying sell me the farm, but a little effort would have been nice. The cashier on the other hand, was sweet as pie, thanked me for being a Beauty Insider, and gushed over the lip color (one of the new Dior colors). So I was a bit disappointed, but I have to give it to the artist, she did a great job, and the cashier was lovely. read more
