I usually drive but it gets very tiresome especially if you're the only driver. We get on/off at Wilson to transport to a charter bus to my family's hometown in Jacksonville/Sneadsferry. The commute is long but very comfortable and relaxing. There's not a lot of stores within walking distance of this train station. The surrounding area seems desolate with a small residential community. There are bathrooms you can use inside the train station. I looovve the comfortable seats and great leg room on Amtrak trains. You can freely get up and exercise your leg without troubling your seat mate too much. I have to have a window seat to enjoy the beautiful scenery and diversity of communities that you pass. The staff are pretty friendly and funny. I love that the staff always help you on/off the trains as needed. They have a few stops where you can get off the train for 10 to 15 minutes to smoke or stretch. Make sure you bring some headphones because it can get noisy with people talking loud to each other or on their cell phones. I plan on checking out Amtrak for some other quick getaways closer to home and so should you. :-)

The Union Station was very modern and clean. The only downside was that the deli was closed at 2 pm in the afternoon. The train was on time, staff was very pleasant. The ride was comfortable and quick. Street parking is available on the cross streets surrounding the station and Morgan St Municipal offers Free All Day Parking on weekends.

It's right next to downtown Durham. I was pretty impressed! There's not really anything in the way of food, but there are modern and clean bathrooms. For inexpensive food you probably have to go west a long ways on Chapel Hill street, or much farther northeast through town. The area nearby has become expensive restaurants and highways. Actually at some times I think there are Food Trucks nearby.
