Durham's Amtrak station is ideally located right in downtown, within walking distance to restaurants, theatres, the DPAC, and the ballpark. New and clean, with bright open space. (Charlotte's much older, less well-kept station stands in stark contrast to this.) The only complaint: Parking is very limited; there is a gravel overflow lot with signs threatening towing but it's clear most cars there are not Amtrak customers; best advice is to take an Uber rather than plan to park there. We ended up taking a chance on a parking deck 1/3 mile away and hoped for the best. Apart from that: I must mention the staff in both the station and on the trains. They are friendly, helpful, and seem genuinely interested in doing their jobs and engaging with passengers. On both legs of a recent journey we were approached by conductors who seemed to be something more like ambassadors for Amtrak -- happy, wanted to talk about our trip and interests, mentioned things to see on our visit, etc. Really exceptional customer experience. read more

My outgoing train roomette was old, neglected and not in the best of shape. I was disappointed for the huge price tag, but at least it had a private toilet. The ride back had a much more stylish and modern roommette with shared restroom at the end of the car. It's a crap shoot, really. Just because you're paying a premium doesn't mean you'll win the way you want to or should. Wifi didn't work on either ride. The food was average. Breakfast was fine, with some okay-to-good choices. Lunch was mediocre; just simple sandwiches and potato chips and stuff like that. Dinner was a score every time. When you balance it all out, the food is just okay. The staff were totally cool. Any chance you get to ride first class, take it. Though I belly-ached about some dry features and events, you cannot beat a solo ride from Cary, NC to NYC. Service: Top Tier. The guy who I confirmed my tix with was professional and personable. Not only was he the guy at the counter, but helped me with my bags as well when boarding the train. There was a woman, who I believe was the conductor... I don't know the roles, but she was about her business and did NOT play around. LOL She wasn't rude or anything, but you just knew you didn't want to play around with her. She was professional and knew her job well. Train was clean and a nice way to get from Durham to Charlotte. She argued that that Amtrak staff cannot notify passengers of the name of the train stop the train arrives at, even if these people cannot hear or understand announcement. This is discrimination of blind and deaf people and anyone who cannot understand English announcements. She argued that anyone who takes Amtrak must speak English or go places by their own means of transportation. read more

We had a great trip from Durham, NC to Philadelphia, and then on to NYC a couple of days later. There was a retired gentleman who was a volunteer resource on the first leg of the journey. He was interesting and enjoyable to talk with. The snack shop was very welcome, and busy. In fact, the hard working person serving us could have used a second helper. My only complaint about the trip would be that several people did not use headphones when playing video games or watching movies on their devices, so as the train got more crowded along the way, it became pretty noisy and unpleasant. We would take the train to NYC again, but perhaps in Business Class where it would hopefully be a bit quieter. read more

The workers were yelling at me and giving me a lecture (I'm 19) about not having a bag for my cat because she hates carriers and I bought a ticket for my cat which is extra but they wouldn't let me on and I was sitting in the rain and crying and that's when they decided to give me even more attitude. This Amtrak station in downtown Durham is pretty awesome. Made out of renovated Liggett warehouses in the downtown area, it gives ample space with large high ceilings, plenty of sitting space, and a nostalgic feel while being clean and modern to serve the public. The grounds and the area meeting the trains is very nice kept and groomed. The station itself including the bathrooms appear well kept as well. I wish Raleigh had this type of Amtrak presense but I have to say the difference between Raleigh's station and this one is night and day. It is also very strategically placed so it is within walking distance of some great downtown eateries, bars, hotels, etc. so it is a great place to come to for visiting Durham for the day (I've done so a few times myself even though I live within the Triangle, something about train rides bring the kid out in you). So why not 5 stars, you say? Well I am just not that sold on the parking situation. The paved official parking area is a bit limited. So much so now that they require you to get a permit inside first if you are leaving your car at the station for any length of time. The Cary station has more parking than this station, for a bit of perspective. There is a dirt/gravel area below right on the street but it is not sectioned off or fenced in and I don't think I would leave my car there removed from the main station, if I could not get one of the main paved spots. A small item to be sure, but one that causes me to hold back from the perfection of the fifth star. Bottom line: I like this station! Very clean, neat, nostalgic, and strategically located in the downtown Durham area. Despite the limited parking area, this station is a joy to use! read more

Dropped a friend off, who quickly and easiliy got her ticket and headed off to her destination smoothly. The station is located In one of the old tobacco buildings which inside and out is really beautiful. Lots of historical pictures of Durham along the walls. Very clean bathroom. What a nice, clean and centrally located train station. It drops you off right in the middle of downtown Durham. You are only a few blocks from a ton of restaurants, hotels, breweries, and cafes. We came up for the weekend from Charlotte for a little getaway and the train was the perfect way to travel with 2 hour and 20 minutes, I don't think we could drive there that quickly with construction and traffic these days! It was $60 round trip so $120 for two and with the price of parking in downtown Durham it was well worth it. This train is run by Amtrak but the track is owned by the state of North Carolina so unlike other train lines in the country you don't have delays due to having to wait for cargo trains which is great! Why can't all train travel in the US be like that?!?!? read more

After visiting or passing through several other Amtrak locations in North Carolina, I've got to say Durham is killing it! From the classic and historical feel of the waiting area to the great customer service to it's location to downtown Durham: this is where it's at! You can easily purchase tickets online or by walking in the station and if you have questions, call the office! They answer and are incredibly helpful. What you should know about the Durham location: it's located next to a wine bar, so you can have a drink while you're waiting. If you need to leave your car here, it's easy and free! Just visit the front desk and they'll give you a parking pass. Did I mention the Amtrak's proximity to downtown? Whether you're coming into Durham for a show at the DPAC or a Bullsgame, it's all walkable AND SAFE from the Durham Amtrak. Also, if you're taking the Piedmont connection from Raleigh to Charlotte, note that it stops in Raleigh first, than Cary and finally Durham before heading on. If you miss your first stop, try picking it up a bit down the road. If you're taking the Piedmont connector: from Durham you'll pass through Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Salisbury, Kannapolis and finally into Charlotte (about a 2.45 hour trip). Some basic knowledge about Amtrak: it offers student savings, multi-pass savings, AAA discounts and military discounts (as well as tons of other discounts I'm sure!) The Piedmont connector offers free, on-board wifi, coffee (Seattle's Best), tea (Lipton) and water. In addition, you'll have large reclining seats with individual pull out tables (get a window seat if you need an outlet!) There are also a couple of seated tables in the couches, or head to the very first train for snacks, beverages and first-come, first-serve seating {Pro-Tip from Susan Z: bring wet wipes for these tables, they can get dirty!}. Bathrooms are located at each cart. NOTE: You should also note that Amtrak prices DO NOT get lower the closer you get to your trip, you'll want to buy your ticket ahead of time. The Durham stop for Amtrak is the best in the state. Brand new, super sized with lots of seating. Decent parking (I've left my car there for days with no probs). There's a great wine bar in the same complex as well. Good for food or drinks if there's any delays in your rail service. read more

Station is very nice and clean, you can park for free overnight with a pass from the attendant placed in your car's front window. The train is spacious and clean with power outlets and wifi. Free coffee, water, and hot tea on board. Went to Charlotte for the weekend and there were long delays on both days, the train sat still on the tracks waiting for cargo trains. Today's trip from Charlotte to Durham took an extra 1.5 hrs... we stopped twice during the trip waiting on other trains. This makes it tough to want to do this again. read more

The staff here are nice, the facilities are clean, the design transports me to a bygone era, and the location is smack dab in downtown Durham near the West Village apartments. I love taking the train instead of driving. It is actually not as bad as flying. You can get up and walk around and go to the food cart for something to eat. Better to bring your own though because its expensive! I do worry about the safety of leaving my car overnight there but haven't had any issues and the lot seems pretty well lit. The travel time for me is just the same as it would be if I drove and there was zero traffic, plus I can drink which is obviously a no no when driving. read more

The Durham Amtrak station is very nice. It feels like a throwback design with wood benches and tile floors inside an old warehouse building. It's still relatively new, having opened in 1999. There isn't much in the way of amenities - a few vending machines, ticket booths, and clean restrooms. It would be nice to have more, but that's hard to expect given that trains only cross through here six times a day. The location is great. It's right in the middle of downtown Durham. You can walk to the Carolina Theater, DBAP, DPAC, and many restaurants. read more

The train stations is amazingly beautiful. The interior incorporates elements of Durham's tobacco warehouses and transportation hub. The staff are cheerful and helpful. Visitors to the area note that very nearby is the tranist station for Data and TTA buses. Across the street from Amtrak is a stop for the free Bull City Connector that runs on Main Street between Golden Belt and Duke University. There are plenty of places within walking distance to eat, shop and hangout. DPAC, The Durham Bull's Baseball Stadium and the Carolina Theatre are within walking distance. If you are so inclined consider bringing a bike on the train. Some trains have space for bikes. Bike lanes in Durham are expanding and many neighborhood streets are bike friendly enough.
