I traveled to Raleigh for a work conference this week. I had a roundtrip ticket from Newark, NJ to Raleigh, NC. My home station is Newark Penn and I knew what to expect (IYKYK), but the city of Raleigh and Union Station were all new to me. Raleigh Union Station is really nice. It's got a modern design, looks new and must have been renovated in recent years/decades. The station is clean and well maintained. There's lots of seating for passengers waiting for their Amtrak trains. There's clear signage for ticket booth, facilities like the bathrooms and cafe, and where to line up for the ascending to the train track. So that was new for me - As each train arrives at the station, you'll hear over the P.A. when to line up at doors that open to a ramp walkway that you will take to get to the platform. It was pretty organized, civilized, and calm - Being from the NY metro area, I'm not used to that! lol read more

I really enjoyed my quick roundtrip to Charlotte. Seating was comfortable, wi-fi was strong and each outlet worked perfectly. Parking was a bit scary at first as I couldn't find any that offered all day parking however the attendant outside was sooooo helpful - oh goodness. Eventually I learned there was parking across the street and was able to pay via a link once my 4 hours expired. I extended the 4 hours (3) times for a quick roundtrip to Charlotte. I purchased a round trip ticket from the GRO station to Raleigh. This was my first trip to Raleigh via Amtrak, as I've traveled to Durham for a short trip previously. The train to Raleigh arrived about 20 minutes late but did leave the station on time for my return to GRO. The waiting area appeared to be spacious though the lighting was dim. I arrived just in time for boarding for my trip back to GRO. Despite the weather alerts the staff made the boarding process a smooth one. We endured a two-hour delay on my return to the Greensboro station due to the weather alerts and high winds. Even amidst delays, these short trips are inexpensive, just be sure to carve out some extra time and be open to arrival times shifting. read more

Perfectly nestled in the middle of downtown, this train station feels like a destination that's more than just a train stop. First off, it's huge and beautiful. There is so many places to sit and relax, ranging from regular bench seating to couches to tables to countertop seats. Thankfully the bench seating has access to outlets so that we could charge both upon arrival and departure. The bathroom were plentiful and very clean and advertised their ability to do events. I personally didn't see the look out where they do weddings but the pics looks beautiful. While you never want your train to be two hours late, between the ambiance of the station as well as it being a 2 min walk away from a handful of bars and coffee shop - this seems like the place to be stuck waiting. read more

I was amazed at how beautiful the train station looks since being remodeled. Now as far as the drop off/pick up area...that could of been designed better, it is very chaotic and a tight squeeze with people opening and closing doors so freely. The area where you stand to get ready to go down to board the trains could be larger as well because you find people crowding around the doors and the staff being annoyed with them. Overall the lobby area was very clean and spacious enough for large groups to wait. The bathrooms were very clean as well. read more

I love the Raleigh Union Station! It's conveniently located near one of my favorite coffee shops downtown, making it easy to walk to the station after grabbing a coffee before a trip. The space is clean and modern. I have no complaints other than that the staff could be more friendly and that the traffic pattern could be better. read more

This lovely station near downtown Raleigh is a great spot to spend your layover. Some trains from Charlotte terminate here and pick up another train that heads up to Washington DC. So even though my journey ended here, there were others on my train that had two or three hours to spend here before going onwards. Airy, clean, well constructed and close to restaurants if you want to go eat something other than packages from the vending machines. There is wifi, clean bathrooms and power outlets. They've even set up a few spots where you could set up a laptop while you wait for the train. There is a taxi queue and there is pickup for shared ride services. Overall, I'm a fan. This train station is located in a really hip part of town. I arrived on a Friday night from DC and there were tons of bars close by that were popping. When you pull into the station you get an angled city view like no where else around - it's beautiful. You arrive on the upper platform and find baggage and transportation on the lower platform. I did not interact with any staff while visiting, in fact, the place was pretty much a ghost town. It was peaceful though, not the scary kind of ghost town. Everything was very clean and orderly. Decor was nice. Benches weren't covered in bird poop. There were shaded areas on the upper platform. All in all, it was a cozy train station I would comfortable having my kids, friends, family members wait at and/or arrive into. read more

Station kind of sucks. No food to choose from in the station, like where are the restaurants? There are restaurants around the outside, but not very walking distance, def cant just grab a quick bite if your train is leaving soon. The other thing about this station I didnt like was the fact that there wasn't any signage really when it comes to the trains and arrival/departure times. They had this very tiny sign near the check out counter but that's about it. They could really benefit from another sign.......maybe bigger for people who don't frequent the station or are new in town. When you get off the train too, there is a long walk to the front of the building to get to the parking lot. Its a really huge station and its very clean and new, but I feel like it needs more to it. read more

In terms of Amtrak service, it might not be fair to compare Raleigh and Charlotte, but it's inevitable. And for every complaint (completely justified, in my opinion) one might have about the dated and faded station at the western terminus of the Piedmont service, Raleigh stands as a proud counterpoint. Where Charlotte's current station is disconnected from its core, Raleigh Union has become an anchor for its corner of downtown. Where there's little in the way of services around CLT, there are coffee shops (plural), restaurants (plural), a grocery store and garage parking within a few blocks of Raleigh Union's front door. Where Charlotte has a limited drop-off lane, middling pedestrian access and limited options for charging a phone or laptop, walking, biking or riding to and from Raleigh were clearly considered and there are power outlets aplenty. All of this makes passing through RGH pleasant, regardless of how long your wait at the station actually is. The architectural flourishes tying together the former industrial use and modern passenger experiences are simply the statement-making bonus. The station's design is so great, it's easy to miss the subtly executed touches. What Raleigh has built puts this Union comfortably into the Amtrak network's upper tier (though I take no sides in the debate about whether it's a "true" union station). Notes: * The Amtrak station page seemed to be up-to-date as far as service availability. * While a convenience shop inside of the station might be nice, the proximity to Weaver Street Market makes that less of a necessity. * Covered, but not fully-enclosed, bike parking is available at the building's southeastern corner. * The small exhibit on railroad workers (to the right, just inside of the southeastern entrance), the planted overlook and a photo exhibit (in the nook to the right as you face the ticket office) were all worth a quick stop. This place is a thousand times above and beyond the old station on Cabarrus St. The new station is huge! It just opened a couple of weeks ago so there's still some construction in the area and the shop spaces are still vacant but there is much promise to come. The station itself serves Amtrak long distance trains as well as the state funded Piedmont trains to Charlotte. There is a manned ticket/baggage checking area at one end of the main hall. The hall itself is gorgeous. Lots of seating and tables to work at. It's largely glassed in so lots of light. Currently there is a small vending area with soda and snack machines. There is kiosk that sells coffee/tea/snacks. However, I would suggest eating at one of the nearby local places since currently this is all the food available in the station itself. There is an observation deck overlooking the train platforms. If you're a trainspotter then head up there. The steps are opposite the entrance to the station. You'll see the aforementioned Amtrak trains along with many freight trains pass by. There's no cover on the deck so bring an umbrella or sunscreen if you're going to be there a while. Everything is really clean and they had a security officer at a desk inside. There is long term and hourly (2 hour max) parking. It isn't free, so be aware. The short term parking doesn't take cash (it's a machine) so bring a card. It may also have a "pay by license plate" option but not sure if that is operational yet. I didn't didn't check out the long term parking so you may wish to review the website or call to find out parking specifics. This place is a welcome addition to the warehouse district. read more

I know it seems weird to review a train station, but I think it's worth reviewing THIS train station. It's not that it's that ornate, or that the architecture is that unique. But it's a nice, big open space, with ample seating. And something about the design, which is both industrial but also retains certain elements of classic train stations, just works. It left an impression on me, that's all I can say. Like, if 10 years from now, I sat down and tried to remember all the train stations I'd ever been to, I'd probably remember this one. Does that make sense? I don't know, it's just kind of a cool train station. Good job, Raleigh. read more

This is an excellent example of how old meets new. It is also a testimony to the evolution of downtown Raleigh. In the heart of the newly renovated warehouse district, the Union Station is a newly remodeled old facility with a state of the art look while still maintaining the traditions of the old architecture. This beautiful open facility also is available for conference space. Typically, not crowded, you can catch a train from Miami all the way up to New York, grab a hot cup of coffee or just go to the observation area to watch the trains come in as you wave to the passengers. read more

My first visit to this station. I loved it. It was pretty empty but there were Amtrak staff behind the ticket window who answered all my questions. Agree with the review about the crazy long walk to and from the train platform - very, very long corridor, downhill when leaving, uphill when arriving. However, most train platforms involve a long walk of some kind. You just get used to rolling your suitcase(s) a long ways if you travel by train. We were there at Christmas and really enjoyed the beautiful multi-story Christmas tree and other decorations. There is a nice traffic circle and some seating outside - handy for hailing a cab or Uber or getting picked up by family or friends. Not much food available. Would have been nice to have more options than those vending machines others have mentioned. Not much else to say, it had all the amenities you would expect - restrooms, charging areas, a variety of seating, staff on site. All good things. Looking forward to my next Amtrak trip from this station. read more

I'm disabled low vision blind can't see things only blurry. The guys at the ticket counter were great. But when to get on train the Porter tells me to find a seat above #30. I had my white cane so I did try to find a seat but folks didn't move . So I had to ask for help to find a seat as I can't see the numbers on the seats. They aren't disabled friendly for the blind! read more

This is a nice looking fairly new train station that unfortunately has a couple of design flaws. It's an unbelievably long walk from the station to the platform. A big problem for older riders. But even worse is there is no place to eat or even grab a snack in the station. I don't understand how a modern train station doesn't at least have a coffee shop. A bigger sign with train arrivals would be nice too. On the plus side there is ample seating with charging ports, and it's easy to grab a cab or Uber right outside. read more

An absolutely gorgeous addition to the warehouse district! I finally had a chance to use Union Station this past week for an Amtrak trip from Raleigh to Charlotte and it definitely has lived up to all the media hype from these past few months! The station itself is probably the nicest in the state, being massive, well kept and full of potential with store fronts and vendor space (not much yet but it's still pretty new). There's lots of seating areas and an entire section of benches with chargers in case you need them. The bathrooms were set up very similarly to RDU's airport bathrooms with extra large stalls for bringing your luggage in and a bit of space for freshening up. I was also happy to see them very clean and well kept! The only thing the station seems to be lacking amenity-wise is proper food/drink options as right now they only have a one small vendor with pre-packaged snacks / basic coffee. Definitely grab yourself something fresh before heading inside. Service here is also quite good, everyone I encountered from the ticketing agents to the security and the on-board attendants were helpful and very pleasant. It made the process and trip super easy and something I'd want to do again very soon! With how cheap and convenient it is I really hope more people will opt to take the train and get a chance to experience one of the coolest additions to downtown Raleigh! read more

Today was absolutely unacceptable. The train from charlotte to Raleigh was delayed for a total of 3 hours. We left half an hour late, and we were delayed on the railroad. Apparently, some trespasser was hit by the train ahead of us, so the train had to come to a complete stop. We were forced to sit tight for 2 hours instead of departing the train and getting an uber. I have places to be instead of sitting in a train all day! read more

I don't know where to begin, but I think this station was designed by someone who doesn't take trains. The worst part of it is the long corridor to get to the trains. If you are departing, you have to roll your luggage down a long corridor, and in the middle of the corridor, there is a door that doesn't automatically open, so you have to hold your luggage while you open this door. Then at the bottom of the hill, there is a staircase and a small elevator. Why not an escalator? If you are arriving, then you have to take your luggage down a staircase or take the small elevator. Then, the worst part is you have to drag your luggage behind you up the long hill, opening that door in the middle of the corridor and dragging your luggage up the long hill. Whose idea was it to design this? Whoever it was is out of touch with train travel. Train travel is more affordable than airline travel, so I would say the majority of people who take trains are of a lower-to-middle socioeconomic level. I don't recall long uphill corridors at any airports I've been to--they usually have moving walkways, escalators, plenty of elevators. Are train travelers not worthy of this, or are they only worthy of dragging their suitcase up a hill because they can't afford or choose not to travel on an airplane? The front doors should open automatically. The button to hit to open the door is too far over to the left and unreasonable for a person with disabilities let alone a person with luggage or a stroller. The parking is not free and it is far away unless it is handicapped parking. The meters are pay with credit card only and you must put in your license plate number. I find this to be an invasion of privacy--not a convenience. If someone drives you to the station, they have to put their number in. That is an invasion of their privacy. There is no taxi stand. And I'd been using the Cabarrus Street station for over 20 years. While it didn't have enough parking, there were plenty of taxis available. And the parking was conveniently located and free. At the new station, your family/friends cannot go to the train with you. At the old station, they could go to the train with you, help carry bags, see you off. At the new station, you wait inside until you are called to go through the long, downhill corridor. The entrance is difficult to find. And the city has to do something about the people on scooters who go on joy rides at night around the pick-up circle at the station. The only pro to this station is that the train is level with the track. At the old station, you had to lift your bag up to the train, but here it is level. Station and train staff are very helpful, friendly and provide top-quality service. My review has nothing to do with them, and I do not want my review to have repercussions on them. My criticisms are with those who designed and planned this station. How can this station be fixed? 1. Install an escalator where the stairs/elevator are. Make a level walkway from the train to the lobby so people do not need to drag luggage up the steep corridor. 2. Make the front door automatically open for those with disabilities, luggage etc. 3. Get rid of the door in the middle of the corridor or make it automatically open. 4. Install pay by coin meters that do not require license plate numbers. 5. Add more signage at the entrance to let cars know where to go. 6. Install no trespassing signs and enforce that rule with people on scooters. read more

The Union Station in downtown Raleigh is either bustling with people or very sleepy and when it's very sleepy it's almost magical. I've fallen in love with this train station from the standpoint it's a beautiful location to shoot photos and just to walk around. It's just a gorgeous building in general. The warehouse district is changing. In some ways for good and in some ways for the worst. I hope future additions to the warehouse district are like the Union Station. Right now the station is very basic, but things are coming. Right now there's a very small snack stand on the first floor. Eventually there will be restaurants and bars and other places. Sadly I feel like right now it's just about perfect. You can easily navigate the station and appreciate its beauty. You can snap some photos or just enjoy how quiet and peaceful it is. It's a truly well designed place with very nice bathrooms, lots of nice seating areas and even has a heated concrete floor. Lots of care was put into this space. There's also convenient parking out front. Not long term though. If you're looking for something in Raleigh some have yet to discover this place is really lovely. read more
