The Store is a repurposed old general store that has been turned into a very retro/modern cool vibe with interesting architectural detail, wonderful art, and welcoming warmth. John is the perfect host. We especially loved the King room with large shower, lots of nice products, good coffee and real cream. We highly recommend The Store. read more

If I could give this sanctuary more than 5 stars, I would. Every inch of this space tells a story -- art collected from around the world, sculpted greenery and koi gliding through still water, lily pads floating beneath the gaze of elegant sculptures. It's a living gallery, a meditation on design and serenity. We spent hours in the communal space, talking, laughing, and letting music fill the air (their sound system is state of the art). It was so comfortable and inspiring that we chose to stay in rather than venture out. John is not merely a host; he is a curator of experiences -- part concierge, part architect, part storyteller. His presence elevates the stay without ever intruding upon it. We usually seek a new stay with every visit to Raleigh. But The Store has changed that. It's more than accommodation; it's an experience we'll keep coming back to. read more

Located at the heart of Raleigh in a quiet neighborhood and close to great dining and sightseeing. John is a great host (also the owner of the place in 3rd generation) - very friendly, welcoming, and super knowledgeable about the city. He met us in person and listed all the local gems on a map. He was also a great communicator prior to our arrival and made sure we could connect for the property tour. The property is very well thought out and you get a lot for your franklins. The room was very clean and had everything you could think of - chargers, fans, snacks, robes, water, and more. The bathroom was very stylish and clean as well and there were more complementary accessories than you could ever think or need. The common area on the first floor looked fantastic - no wonder so many people want to host events here. It's truly award winning. Overall, we were very happy with our stay! It's not even a question if we'll be back. When we come to Raleigh again, we will certainly book our room at The Store and will make sure to tell our friends about the place! read more

Perfect for a weekend in Raleigh! The king suite was so nice and comfortable. A quiet place to sleep in! read more

The Store is a true jewel in Raleigh. My partner and I had one night on a stopover in town and we didn't want to stay at a chain hotel. John's place is quiet, tranquil, and peaceful. The rooms are comfortable, with plenty of character. Perfect for a weary traveler or anyone looking for a unique overnight. Would also recommend to anyone who has an extended stay in Raleigh. The value of what you're paying for and what you get is outstanding. John is also a lovely person to spend time with, and gives you all the space you need. It felt like staying with an old friend. Truly wonderful. read more

A Hidden Gem - An Unforgettable Stay What a place. Let's start with that. When you book a hotel, you usually expect a five-star experience to be the best of the best. Over the past eight years, my wife and I have been fortunate enough to travel more as our kids have grown older. We've explored destinations from Peru to Mexico, Central America, and across the U.S., from the East Coast to the West Coast. About ten years ago, we became members of the Marriott Vacation Club, and we've enjoyed many stays at their properties. However, this time, we wanted to try something different. My daughter plays soccer for William Peace University, and we needed a place nearby for our visit. I stumbled upon this hidden gem and decided to give it a try. The pictures looked promising, and the story behind the place intrigued me, so we booked it. From the very start, it was clear this experience would be different. Instead of the standard, impersonal confirmation email, I received a phone call from the owner the day before our stay. He personally ensured that everything was in place, explained the check-in process, and asked if there was anything he could do to make our stay even better. This level of personal attention was just the beginning. Due to my son's football game in Virginia, we arrived late at around 12:30 or 1:00 a.m., but the owner's friend, who was managing the property while he was away, had no issue waiting for us. The moment we stepped inside, it was a "wow" experience. The attention to detail was incredible. We stayed in the smaller of the two rooms upstairs, which was absolutely beautiful. The room was equipped with everything you could need: a mini-fridge stocked with water, coffee, and snacks (which were a lifesaver after our long drive), and a bathroom that was on another level entirely. The bathroom had it all--shaving cream, razors, shampoo, deodorant--and the cherry on top was the Epsom salt for the tub. After a five-hour drive following a long day at work, soaking in a warm bath was exactly what I needed. The next morning, we met the friend who was managing the place. His positivity, customer service, and overall vibe were top-notch. He gave us a tour of the property, shared some local insights about Raleigh, and introduced us to the most loving dog you could imagine. As someone who owns two small businesses and has a busy life with kids ranging from 15 to 26 years old, I rarely take the time to write reviews. But this place deserves it. We live three hours away, and with my daughter having more home games, we'll definitely be back. If you're looking for a unique and extraordinary experience, this is the place. Trust me, you won't regret it. read more

THE STORE is one of the best stays ever in my 20+ years of traveling. Everything about the stay was top notch. The design of the place, the attentiveness, the details to amenities and furniture, etc. I wish I could stay for a week! I will recommend anyone coming to Raleigh to stay here. I was there for work, and the peace and quality made all the experiences very memorable. Do not miss!!! read more

Truly one of my favorite places that I've ever stayed. The Store is conveniently located to just about anywhere in Raleigh and the neighborhood is incredibly quiet and safe. The rooms are stocked with anything you may possibly need and John's attention to detail is something you can not miss. John is beyond helpful and beyond kind, his level of thought and care can be felt though every detail within the space. Highly highly recommend The Store to anyone looking for a place to call home while in Raleigh. read more

Great place. John was a fantastic, responsive host. Every amenity in the room you could think of.

We were wowed by the Store which was perfect for two couples to reconnect. We had a very comfortable bedroom which was spotlessly clean and included every amenity you could imagine - water, snacks, tea, coffee, refrig, microwave, charging cords, robes, and so on. One bedroom is larger with en suite bath and the other has a hallway bath. We all live in older homes so creaking floors did not bother us but just added to the authenticity of the experience. We were guests in a lovely home. The former grocery store has been converted to a stylish inn by John, a talented architect. The furnishings, window treatments, artwork, rugs, lighting, plants all contribute to a stylish, comfortable, and peaceful environment. John is a helpful host who recommended Vidrio (Mediterranean) for dinner and Iris Coffee Lab for breakfast. We hope to return soon! read more

The STORE was one of the best stays I've ever had on a trip! John, owner of the building, was an exceptional host. We were greeted with a warm welcome from him as soon as we arrived. You can tell he is thoughtful about ensuring that every guest has an amazing stay, from start to finish! He was very responsive to our texts and provided several dining recommendations for our very first stay in Raleigh. The entire place was immaculately clean and well-stocked with just about anything you need. There was ample parking right next to the building. I love the uniqueness of this place and the story behind the evolution of the building, well-maintained with thorough attention to detail by its now-owner, also an architect. Also, the building is walking distance from shops, eateries, cafes, parks, and more. If you're looking for a place to stay in Raleigh, look no further! I'd highly recommend! read more

Spent the night here before going to a convention and it was an awesome stay! John goes the extra mile to make sure you're comfortable and have everything you need -- including where to walk and where to eat! The charm and style of The Store can't be beat and we'll be repeat guests! read more

The Store is worth a trip to Raleigh in and of itself. John reminds me of an old school innkeeper -- he greets you at the door, helps with your luggage, and gives you local recommendations for the best places to visit in town. The rooms and bathrooms are impeccable -- I mean truly impeccable. Everything is handled with such attention to detail and care. 5 stars doesn't even do it justice. I highly recommend. read more

A 10 star stay!! What a gem! From the ideal location to the beautiful space to all the thoughtful and well thought out details to a super comfy bed, The Store captures it all. This is such a quaint and unique place to stay in Raleigh. John, the proprietor, is a wealth of knowledge and info about the area and recommended several restaurants we hope up try on future trips. The bed was cozy, parking was right next to the inn, the hospitality was phenomenal. We hope to stay again in the future for more than one night so we can explore the area further. We definitely suggest it for couples or solo travelers looking for something different. read more

If you get a chance to stay here, take it. Quickly. You have found a diamond in the rough. The entire building is gorgeous, comfortable, in a great part of town, and has everything you needed for a relaxing stay. The owner, John, is not only the nicest guy in the known universe, he is also an architect who revamped this old grocery store into this stunning, modern, welcoming home. I stayed here with my husband and my dog in the larger room, and I had to work. It was completely equipped with everything I needed- a workstation, WiFi, surround sound speakers in the wall for my music, a basket full of snacks in front of me, bottled water, coffee, tea, microwave, fridge, bowls, plates, utensils etc. The room also had a huge ensuite bathroom and a shower room that is big enough to cartwheel in. Don't ask how I know. Absolutely everything you need is in there- I'm talking makeup remover, beard wash, q-tips, hairdryer, electric shaver, magnified mirror, and MORE surround sound speakers so you can sing til your heart is content in that oversized shower. There is no curfew at night, it's super laid back, and walking distance to Raleigh's town center and shops. I'll be back for sure, may even make it a regular stop off whenever I'm in the area. Thanks John! read more

John is an architect and it shows in all the touches he has added to this historical setting. In addition he has thought of everything you could possibly need as far as toiletries, etc. The location is near many attractions but is in a quiet throw back neighborhood. I took a little trip from California to explore North Carolina and see some friends. On the way out, I stayed a night in Raleigh at The Store and it was one of the highlights of my trip. Such a cool boutique hotel in a cute little section of town. The hotel has interesting architecture and decor everywhere you turn. Super thoughtful and tasteful place, I couldn't have been happier with my stay in the king suite. Also, John is incredibly kind, generous with his time, and full of helpful suggestions on spots to eat, drink, and visit. Highly recommend! read more

THE STORE is the absolute best place to stay in Raleigh. Really it's probably the best place to stay in North Carolina, or maybe on the east coast, possibly in the country. I know for sure, it's the best place I've ever stayed. John is the greatest host. He is the embodiment of southern hospitality. You almost don't have to pack anything if you're staying here because he's thought of everything anyone could possibly need. There was a blow dryer with a diffuser (if you have curly hair and you care about it, you know how huge this is). Snacks, mini-fridge, microwave, robes, surround sound system, great toiletries, etc. The bed was a cloud. The house is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. John has the best restaurant recommendations. I was in town for a wedding, but I'm already planning my trip back for a foodie tour of Raleigh. I'll obviously be staying at THE STORE again. read more

The Store has become the only place I want to stay while visiting Raleigh. John is the best Innkeeper. He is knowledgeable, funny, and gives that home away from home vibe. The house was immaculate, clean and very modern, I loved the decor and the fish pond was beautiful. You can't go wrong with The Store, I suggest to make this your place of rest when visiting Raleigh. If I could give it more stars I would. The Store itself and John's hospitality was definitely an added highlight to our visit. Thanks again John! Shana (visitor July 4-6) read more

If history, art and flawless design are what you are looking for in an overnight experience then look no further. An overnight or two at "The Store" is exactly what you are looking for. It will leave you feeling refreshed, appreciated and in awe of your surroundings. The owner / proprietor, Mr. John Reece has left nothing to be desired. Nestled within his home are two guest quarters impeccably designed and have the feel of nothing short of a modern museum. His decorative touch coupled with his mastery in architecture has transformed these spaces into a vibrant showcase of history, art, functionality and modern luxury. John has literally thought of everything to have on hand for Raleigh visitors. The amenities are too many to list but I can tell you that I haven't slept in a bed that comfortable in my life. John is also a Raleigh history buff and can tell you the best places to eat. Everything from an award winning steakhouse to chicken and waffles. He knows where to have an epic cup of coffee or to have a designer cocktail. Treat yourself to this beautifully crafted inn, you will not be disappointed. We will most definitely be back to enjoy John's warm energy and pleasant company and if course to fall in love with his home once again. Thanks John Regards, Brendan & Bell read more

We LOVED our stay at The Store. John was so welcoming and inviting, and we are so thankful he has chosen to open up his home for others to experience. First off, the design of the entire home is amazing. The design and architecture of The Store is so clearly intentional and obviously beautiful. We booked the king bed suite and it was very clean when we arrived. The bed is to die for! The bathroom was also clean and amazing. We loved the light that comes in through the windows and the skylight. John takes the time to welcome each guest as they arrive and give a very thorough explanation of the best local restaurants which we so appreciated!! We had dinner at Cortez, per John's recommendation, and the food was beyond. My husband and I look forward to coming back to Raleigh and bringing our friends with us to stay here again! I wanted to stay longer at the STORE. The photos don't convey enough how the beautiful the spaces were designed by the owner who is the architect. As a Japanese, being in a healthy and joyful space is important as much as eating good healthy food. An unexpected feature in the guest room was the sound system. Hooking my own phone to the system, my music sounded beautifully through the built-in speakers in the bedroom and the bathroom. Most of all John gave me heartfelt welcoming. This place is a gem. I've done a lot of traveling and stayed at a lot of "bnb's," but nothing ever like this place. John was wonderful about communicating from the time I booked my stay to the day I was due to arrive. He did a thorough job of explaining everything and I felt super comfortable the moment I arrived. As a woman who was traveling alone, I found this to be of the utmost importance. This is probably the cleanest place I've ever stayed at which I felt added to my comfort. The room had everything I could ever imagine needing, I couldn't believe the toiletries he provides in the room. Thank you for that, John! The bed was very comfortable and there were a variety of types of pillows on the bed which I also appreciate since I am a stomach sleeper. I was so comfortable! The home is old and floorboards creak, which I believe adds to the charm of staying in a place like this, but could maybe bother someone who is a light sleeper or sensitive to that. I found it to be no bother and honestly if it weren't for the floorboards you'd never know if there was another guest or that John lived on the premises. The neighborhood is great and I felt very safe coming and going, even late at night. Definitely take Johns recommendations for food and drink! He knows his stuff. read more
