Every inch of this space tells a story -- art collected from around the world, sculpted greenery and koi gliding through still water, lily pads floating beneath the gaze of elegant sculptures. It's a living gallery, a meditation on design and serenity. We spent hours in the communal space, talking, laughing, and letting music fill the air (their sound system is state of the art). Located at the heart of Raleigh in a quiet neighborhood and close to great dining and sightseeing. John is a great host (also the owner of the place in 3rd generation) - very friendly, welcoming, and super knowledgeable about the city. He met us in person and listed all the local gems on a map. He was also a great communicator prior to our arrival and made sure we could connect for the property tour. The property is very well thought out and you get a lot for your franklins. The room was very clean and had everything you could think of - chargers, fans, snacks, robes, water, and more. The bathroom was very stylish and clean as well and there were more complementary accessories than you could ever think or need. The common area on the first floor looked fantastic - no wonder so many people want to host events here. It's truly award winning. Overall, we were very happy with our stay! Over the past eight years, my wife and I have been fortunate enough to travel more as our kids have grown older. We've explored destinations from Peru to Mexico, Central America, and across the U.S., from the East Coast to the West Coast. About ten years ago, we became members of the Marriott Vacation Club, and we've enjoyed many stays at their properties. However, this time, we wanted to try something different. My daughter plays soccer for William Peace University, and we needed a place nearby for our visit. I stumbled upon this hidden gem and decided to give it a try. The pictures looked promising, and the story behind the place intrigued me, so we booked it. From the very start, it was clear this experience would be different. Instead of the standard, impersonal confirmation email, I received a phone call from the owner the day before our stay. He personally ensured that everything was in place, explained the check-in process, and asked if there was anything he could do to make our stay even better. This level of personal attention was just the beginning. Due to my son's football game in Virginia, we arrived late at around 12:30 or 1:00 a.m., but the owner's friend, who was managing the property while he was away, had no issue waiting for us. The moment we stepped inside, it was a "wow" experience. The attention to detail was incredible. We stayed in the smaller of the two rooms upstairs, which was absolutely beautiful. The room was equipped with everything you could need: a mini-fridge stocked with water, coffee, and snacks (which were a lifesaver after our long drive), and a bathroom that was on another level entirely. The bathroom had it all--shaving cream, razors, shampoo, deodorant--and the cherry on top was the Epsom salt for the tub. After a five-hour drive following a long day at work, soaking in a warm bath was exactly what I needed. The next morning, we met the friend who was managing the place. His positivity, customer service, and overall vibe were top-notch. He gave us a tour of the property, shared some local insights about Raleigh, and introduced us to the most loving dog you could imagine. As someone who owns two small businesses and has a busy life with kids ranging from 15 to 26 years old, I rarely take the time to write reviews. But this place deserves it. We live three hours away, and with my daughter having more home games, we'll definitely be back. If you're looking for a unique and extraordinary experience, this is the place. We were wowed by the Store which was perfect for two couples to reconnect. We had a very comfortable bedroom which was spotlessly clean and included every amenity you could imagine - water, snacks, tea, coffee, refrig, microwave, charging cords, robes, and so on. One bedroom is larger with en suite bath and the other has a hallway bath. We all live in older homes so creaking floors did not bother us but just added to the authenticity of the experience. We were guests in a lovely home. The former grocery store has been converted to a stylish inn by John, a talented architect. The furnishings, window treatments, artwork, rugs, lighting, plants all contribute to a stylish, comfortable, and peaceful environment. John is a helpful host who recommended Vidrio (Mediterranean) for dinner and Iris Coffee Lab for breakfast. We hope to return soon! read more

If you get a chance to stay here, take it. Quickly. You have found a diamond in the rough. The entire building is gorgeous, comfortable, in a great part of town, and has everything you needed for a relaxing stay. The owner, John, is not only the nicest guy in the known universe, he is also an architect who revamped this old grocery store into this stunning, modern, welcoming home. I stayed here with my husband and my dog in the larger room, and I had to work. It was completely equipped with everything I needed- a workstation, WiFi, surround sound speakers in the wall for my music, a basket full of snacks in front of me, bottled water, coffee, tea, microwave, fridge, bowls, plates, utensils etc. The room also had a huge ensuite bathroom and a shower room that is big enough to cartwheel in. Don't ask how I know. Absolutely everything you need is in there- I'm talking makeup remover, beard wash, q-tips, hairdryer, electric shaver, magnified mirror, and MORE surround sound speakers so you can sing til your heart is content in that oversized shower. There is no curfew at night, it's super laid back, and walking distance to Raleigh's town center and shops. I'll be back for sure, may even make it a regular stop off whenever I'm in the area. I took a little trip from California to explore North Carolina and see some friends. On the way out, I stayed a night in Raleigh at The Store and it was one of the highlights of my trip. THE STORE is the absolute best place to stay in Raleigh. Really it's probably the best place to stay in North Carolina, or maybe on the east coast, possibly in the country. I know for sure, it's the best place I've ever stayed. John is the greatest host. He is the embodiment of southern hospitality. You almost don't have to pack anything if you're staying here because he's thought of everything anyone could possibly need. There was a blow dryer with a diffuser (if you have curly hair and you care about it, you know how huge this is). Snacks, mini-fridge, microwave, robes, surround sound system, great toiletries, etc. The bed was a cloud. The house is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. I wanted to stay longer at the STORE. The photos don't convey enough how the beautiful the spaces were designed by the owner who is the architect. As a Japanese, being in a healthy and joyful space is important as much as eating good healthy food. An unexpected feature in the guest room was the sound system. This place is a gem. I've done a lot of traveling and stayed at a lot of "bnb's," but nothing ever like this place. John was wonderful about communicating from the time I booked my stay to the day I was due to arrive. He did a thorough job of explaining everything and I felt super comfortable the moment I arrived. As a woman who was traveling alone, I found this to be of the utmost importance. This is probably the cleanest place I've ever stayed at which I felt added to my comfort. The room had everything I could ever imagine needing, I couldn't believe the toiletries he provides in the room. Thank you for that, John! The bed was very comfortable and there were a variety of types of pillows on the bed which I also appreciate since I am a stomach sleeper. I was so comfortable! The home is old and floorboards creak, which I believe adds to the charm of staying in a place like this, but could maybe bother someone who is a light sleeper or sensitive to that. I found it to be no bother and honestly if it weren't for the floorboards you'd never know if there was another guest or that John lived on the premises. The neighborhood is great and I felt very safe coming and going, even late at night. Definitely take Johns recommendations for food and drink! He knows his stuff. read more
