Good train station overall. Much better experience than Durham. There is actually more parking than what it looks but they don't have signs. I wish they put some signs indicating where all people can park. At first when we arrived, there were lots of cars waiting in the parking lot. I guess if you arrive early for the train may be parking is a little easier. Lastly, I wish they had signs where the business car will land, so people can line up at appropriate location. It would be nice if they put signage which side is Charlotte and which side would be Washington DC. read more

As a review for this particular station, all I can really say is they did what they were supposed to do: be nice and put me on a train. The wooden benches in the waiting room provide average comfort for wooden benches. Every star I'm giving is for the free parking. I was gone 7 days and came back to my car safe and sound. The Cary Amtrak station was bustling when I arrived for a 10:15 am train to Greensboro. The parking lot was pretty full, as was the waiting room (I didn't go inside). The lot seemed to empty a bit after another train boarded at 10 am. People milled around on the platform prior to boarding. The station attendants had everyone going to Charlotte in one train car and those headed to Durham or Greensboro in others to make it easier to let people know about the stops. Fun fact: The station was named number two in the country a few years ago for customer satisfaction! Tip: Cary's station has free overnight parking unlike Raleigh Union. Just be sure to go inside and get a hang tag. read more

This station is a stop for the NC State run Amtrak Piedmont trains along with the Silver Star long distance train between NY and Florida. It's also one of the central stops for the local bus network. The Amtrak waiting room is one of the cleanest I've been in anywhere. The station was expanded several years ago and the Amtrak facilities occupy the newer portion of the building. Given that this station has so few trains serving it, it's good to see that Amtrak/NC stepped up for the construction. Many other stops with limited service are little more than a bus shelter. The waiting room is a good size and as mentioned, super clean. There is an Amtrak ticket office along with a self serve ticket machine. Lots of information available for passengers. No cafe or restaurant, just an array of vending machines along with a no-name ATM. Bathrooms were clean the last time I used them. There is a fairly large parking lot, unsure of how many spaces, and parking appears to be free. Station is within walking distance of downtown Cary. The local bus network serves the station with a waiting room in the other half of the building. All in all, one of the better small stations in the Amtrak network. read more

I came to the Cary train station to catch a train to Washington DC, the one I took also conveniently continued on to NYC. The train station does have some parking, but I was dropped off so I didn't utilize it. The station has a decently sized air conditioned waiting room, yay! I also spotted a small snack counter, they mostly sell items like soda and candy bars. Bathrooms are available as well, though I didn't use them, so I can't speak to how clean or dirty they were. In addition there was a ticket and baggage counter inside the station. Spotted a variety of informational/tourist brochures on the Raleigh area as well. I have been to a fair amount of train stations and this one was decent. Once on the train, we were assigned to sit with someone else and it was somewhat crowded. read more

We took the train from Cary, NC to Alexandria, VA. It stops in Old Town and we were a close walk to our hotel. Old Town is worth a visit and there is an adjacent Metro station to DC. Because of a passenger delay in Greensboro, the train was 20 minutes late to Cary. That was our only delay. We paid for Business Class which includes unlimited non-alcohol beverages. The car was less crowded than the Coach fare cars. It was a stress-free alternative to the DC area. With the cost of gas, it is actually cheaper. I will do it again. read more

I appreciate post Covid Amtrak! They guarantee at the very least the seat next to you being empty. I have at times been lucky where my whole cabin was empty, but other times more than 60% full. But always with a seat open next to me. Obviously mask required. I'm not sure how they clean the seats after someone gets off and new patrons get on. Actually they don't which is unfortunate but they are also human and that'd be a lot of man power. So you need to bring wipes with you if you want extra protection. OMG. Busiest travel weekend of the year. Amtrak decides to CUT the baggage car on Train 92. Do they tell anyone that??? No, they pretend instead that the baggage car is "BROKEN." Are you fkm?!!! And then they are so f)%#ing stupid that they TELL the passengers they cut the baggage car and lied about it. . . . And I'm not even going to talk about the last Amtrak train I rode, where the conductor GAVE MY LUGGAGE TO ANOTHER PASSENGER. Do not take Amtrak. The new Amtrak station in Cary is nice...quite nice actually. After waiting a couple years for it to be converted from what was an unmanned shelter stop for Amtrak adjacent to the (was then) DMV to this new full service Amtrak station, it is worth it. A nice brick modern building off of Academy Street, it is very convenient to the heart of "old Cary" that I remember from my younger days. Inside, it is bright, open, and very clean. There are a large amount of "pew type" of seats in the waiting area (see pics). There is also an automated kiosk for buying or printing out tickets, but moreover, there is a manned service desk with hours now of 6am-11pm (I was told these hours could change in the future as they see the need change). The large seats work well in that when I have gone by there, especially Thanksgiving week, this place was pretty busy. I'm sure it can accommodate more than small individual type of seats. I used Amtrak to see the folks near Winston-Salem for Thanksgiving and loved it. I plan on using this station a lot more in the future. Of course, it can use more parking (especially around holidays) but what place couldn't use more parking, anywhere? Bottom line: it's nice...a welcomed part of the western Wake area. read more

I love riding the train. The chugga-chugga and the slight sway back and forth is soothing. I like watching the scenery roll by; the tall grass and homes lit up at night or standing tall in the sunlight. What I hate is loud talking whether is on the phone or to your companion or neighbor. Which is why I travel in business class. It's quieter, or at least it was. This trip both to my destination and back home was full of folks who chose business class to talk it up. Yelling down the aisle to get someone's attention, making countless phone calls discussing their moms surgery and pain plan, or reporting to family that they're 2, 1.5, .45, .30 mins away! Traveling on the train is cheaper than flying, however it's much longer and that could be the downfall. The conductors were extremely nice. Even the food was better than I remembered. But the other passengers were disappointing to say the least. Plus, I sat solo both ways. The car was clean, even the rest rooms. Nice folks welcomed me aboard and helped with luggage. I still love Amtrak, my fellow riders, not so much. read more

The first time I rode The Carolinian to DC, I felt like an excited kid. I'd never ridden on a train before. I had ridden a subway for years, but this was different. But with this in mind, as with anything, the crews are hit and miss, (but aren't we all at times?). The one trip I'm going to reference was very frustrating, but as always we laugh about it in hindsight. The return trip was very different. So let's go... On January 10th we hopped The Carolinian 79 north out of Selma (NC) at 11ish. It was 45 minutes late. Upon its arrival we were all led into a single car, despite there being several other cars available appropriate to the tickets we actually purchased. Turns out, this incompetent crew left Charlotte without the stairs needed to board the cars. Not my opinion, I overheard the conversation. The crew was young and refused to explain anything. They stomped up down the aisle like the Gestapo, barking orders and refusing to answer questions. They were awful. I was hoping they'd swap out in Richmond but no such luck. Just awful people. Not one of them should be allowed to work with customers. I had two encounters with these geniuses. Firstly, I asked why I was being seated in seats I didn't purchase, specifically the special mobility seats. His response was a terse, "Come with me, Sir." I again said, "I'd like an explanation, because I bought these seats! " Mr. Personality said, "Sir, you come with me to your seats or I'll have you removed from the train at the next stop!" I went with him, but I was fuming and was determined to find out what was going on. My second encounter was when I stood up in the aisle to stretch. I have a really bad pelvis, femur and knee from a car accident and I need to stand up frequently. As I was standing in the aisle talking to my seatmate, one of the crew rushed up and demanded, "Is there a problem, Sir?!" I said, " No, just stretching. " And she barked, "if you need to stretch you must do it in the cafe car. You can't stay here." I laughed and said, " This is where my seat is, I'll sit back down in a minute. " Her reply will always be memorable, "Cafe car, sir, or return to your seat." I thought, what an asshole. I did find out the whole story. My return trip from DC to Selma (1/14/19) was completely opposite. The crew was middle-aged and wonderful. They were friendly and very helpful. The best member of that crew, Linda Littleton, was extraordinarily knowledgeable about customer service. Great trip home and I smile about our conversations with the crew. We laughed with them and they shared stories. It made the trip seem very short. Enjoyed all of them. Five of six trips on The Carolinian 79 were great. Anomalies happen. I will take The 79 again. And I hope to have Ms. Littleton as my wonderful conductor for the trip. read more

This is my favorite train station! When I need to buy a ticket, I almost always buy it at the Cary station, instead of going on-line. The employees are some of the most friendly and helpful ever, and they know and understand the schedules much better than I do. They've even helped me buy a ticket with a connection that wasn't advertised on the Amtrak site. Several are familiar with my arrival stations, and give me great advice you can't find on-line. The station is small, bright, comfortable and clean, and there's a good amount of parking. There's also easy access from Academy Street and Harrison Avenue. read more

I would have given this ride 5stars easily if Amtrak didn't completely bone us on our short trip to Burlington. Was taking my 2 year old for his first train ride and had my 3 month old with me and we were going to go out to Burlington and grab a hotdog out there... First the Cary station is very nice. Free parking, the station is clean, it has a little kiosk to buy water and candy. The people working the station are extremely friendly and helpful. The lady at the kiosk saw me trying to get some water and immediately offered me a free bottle of her water.. Extremely friendly. The guy that sold me the ticket told me if I buy the ticket 24 hours in advance o could save 10%.. Awesome news for our next trip. The train was on time, they helped me with the stroller, the conductor on the train got us a set of seats with a table.. So pleasant.. We left the station a few minutes late as they has 2 handicapped people to assist getting on, no problems. First stop Durham.. We arrived oh 40 minutes late. Apparently some truck got stuck under a bridge and stopped the train.. I was oh *#%^... I had a narrow window to get to Burlington, grab lunch, get back to the station and get get home.. Now with the 40 minute delay.. Lunch was out the window.. Just glad I brought backup lunch for my 2 year old.. He was taken care of.. Burlington station is very nice.. The man working there also extremely nice.. Trip back wasn't as friendly, but the trains are extremely clean.. Free internet.. They have bathrooms with changing tables.. read more

As far as the Cary station goes, it's great. Nice building. Very clean, very friendly staff. I'd go so far as to say that all Amtrak staff are friendly and helpful. Here's where my review goes downhill. I took the 92 Silver Star to D.C., riding Coach, in my first Amtrak ride ever. The perks of the Silver Star are that the seats fully recline and have a leg rest, and that there's a lot of leg room in general. However, the seats need far more cushion for a train that travels from Florida to New York. After a few hours, I found my seat to be very uncomfortable. My train was delayed by an hour-- much to the chagrin of my bum. In addition, the train was somewhat dirty. On my way back, I took the 79 Carolinian instead of the Silver Star. The Carolinian trains were recently given a facelift, so I found my ride to markedly improved. The train was cleaner, the seats were nicer (with more cushion!). Unfortunately, my train was delayed by an hour and a half. I take Amtrak for the convenience of not having to drive six hours. I start to question if it's worth it when it takes me a near three hours more to get to my destination. All this said-- avoid the Silver Star if you can. Take the Carolinian when possible. Fly if you have the money. read more

The Cary, NC transfer station is a fun place to catch a train. While it lacks in modern amenities, food court, etc, it does have cleanliness and a recent 700k renovation. The boarding crew is very informative and conscientious about train status and method of boarding. They even played a great game for the kids where they had to count to 20 while the train arrived from about 20 seconds out. What a great way to ensure kids stay excited about going on the train. read more

Much better than just a few years back when we had to wait outside for the train to come. Free parking and never an issue even with the businesses nearby. The station itself is updated with a decent size parking lot. The train was clean. My only complaint is that I took it in late July and they maintained a temperature of 77 degrees in the train cars. (There was a little thermostat in my car) For someone who tends to get carsick (yep, as an adult), high temperatures do not help. Never again. The customer service girl was so rude. I got stuck in DC with an 8 hour layover but I was ok with that. I figure I would see the sights and get dinner.Not Going to happen the train was almost 3 hours late instead of 230 we didn't get in till about 530. I upgraded my ticket so I could store my stuff in the ACELA lounge. The guardian at the door was horrid. I wasn't entitled to use the lounge cause the train was late and I had upgraded to business she was a total tool. They took 162.50 off my card . They then put it back the next day. There service was crap their customer service was crap and never in my life time or my childrens life time will I ever use Amtrak again read more

The Amtrak station and the staff are very good.But when the train is late we miss the bus to RTC .The last bus is at 9.30 am and our train 92 reached Cary at 9.30 am on the 20th May morning from Orlando and I missed the last bus to RTC and had to suffer a lot.The train and bus timing must be synchronized . read more
