I live and die by my pc tower set up for graphic design. Although, I love my Mac - my tower is custom. I asked a friend to ship it from Vegas to San Diego, mistakenly assuming she would put it in its original packaging like I had requested. It was only a few months old. A new baby. After paying for the shipping and extra for her time I get my baby in a used USPS box - no padding. For some reason a can of open caramel covered macadamia nuts was tossed in the box - it wasn't opened per se when it was put in but it exploded in the shipping process getting a sticky sugary nightmare all over the innards of my tower as August in Vegas shipping causes sweet things to melt. Imagine the largest facepalm in the world! I first let my friend try to fix what he called the Mercedes of towers. It wasn't name brand, just custom built for a graphic designers needs. Well, he got it to where it turned on... I needed a professional, on a budget. I called around, everybody was asking $400 and at least a 7 day wait. Then I called Selectronic - which I should of called first but I was skeptical of the sketchy Midway location. I was quoted less than half the price. I just wanted everything wiped and back to 0. Not a lot to ask for, I don't understand why it would cost so much at other places. I didn't care if anything were saved, that's what an external hard drive is for. I took in my beaten up baby, and instantly loved everybody there. 2 people who just like what they do. I had daily updates on my tower and got it back in a few days. Last year, I bought my second and last Gateway desktop ( LX6810-01 ) from Best Buy. After three months, it started overheating. I took it back to the Best Buy store in Mission Valley and they sent it to their service center. After waiting for almost a month, I got it back and it was still overheating. I called Gateway and was told to send it THEIR service center (at my expense) and not to Best Buy. Frustrated with both Gateway and Best Buy, I took my computer to Selectronics. My laptop was just over a year old and the antivirus had just expired. Of course I procrastinated to renew it and before I knew it, I had a virus. I am not sure what kind of virus it was, but I couldn't do anything and I was extremely frusterated because I use it everyday... I went to Selectronic and was grateful that I did. Rosa jotted down the problems I was having and unfortunately I had to tell her that nothing had been backed up yet!!! So she said they would do their best to save my only copies of my newborns pictures... Considering I use my laptop everyday I wanted to get it back soon, but didn't want to pay any extra rush fees. I dropped it off during my lunch on Friday. Rosa told me it should be ready by Tuesday, but to my suprise I was called on Monday and it was ready! Had a laptop that just wouldn't turn on. Figured it was some sort of defective hardware issue, and kept meaning to get around to sitting down one afternoon and pull out components until I could finally get to at least POST, but just never got around to it. After almost two years, decided maybe I should just spend a few bucks to have someone look at it in one day since I was obviously never gonna get around to it. Called Selectronic, they said they'd do a free diagnostic, figured hey that can't be beat. Dropped off the laptop. Got a call a couple days later that they determined the motherboard was bad. They wanted $300 to replace it. Probably a fair price... a quick google search for mb's for that model showed some refurbished ones at $150-$200... and I didn't even look close to see if that included the processor... then you have to factor in labor. All the same, a new laptop from Dell that's more powerful than the one I had dropped off is only $600, so the dead one is hardly worth $300 to bring back to life. I asked the guy what he'd charge me to pull all the data off the hard drive. He said that service starts at $99, but if there's a lot of data it would be more and they'd recommend purchasing an external HD as opposed to copying it to DVDs. He said he'd look at the data and give me a call back if it'd be more than $99. Next call I got was that the data extraction was done, and I owed $99. Went in, paid the $99, got the laptop and DVDs and went home. Starting looking through the DVDs and saw that all that was on them was the contents of the "My Documents" folder. Call the store and get involved in a ridiculous argument. It's explained that their backup service is only what they consider "personal data"... basically, the "My Documents" folder. Which is fine and dandy, but the time to explain that is BEFORE I agree to have the service performed. Certainly before I've paid for it. This is the only relevant fact. But the fella on the phone isn't content to leave it at that. He wants to argue with me about the definition of the word data. He wants to try to tell me that program files simply can't be copied. All this nonsense makes me angry. Eventually tells me to come back in on Monday. I go in this morning with the laptop and DVDs. Again I have to listen to someone try to explain to me what their basic backup service is. I cut them off... now is not the time for that explanation... the time for that was last week. Now there are two options, give me a full backup as I requested at no additional cost, or refund my money and destroy the DVDs. They chose the refund, which is just fine. Problem sovled, right? Well, except the manger wants to come and argue with me now. Same old argument about the definition of data, and on and on. Thing is, he cops to the only relevant fact: exactly what work was going to be done should've been disclosed before I agreed to it. This isn't a question of technology, it's a question of business. In spite of the futility of the exercise, I find myself engaging in the argument with him. At one point he questions why I'm so upset when he's giving me the refund. Because, buddy, you're arguing with me. He wasn't content just to say hey we made a mistake and give the refund, he has to establish that he's really right and I'm wrong. He's some sort of bigger man and I'm just uneducated. It's ridiculous, and it's poor business. Brian, you say, I think you're being unreasonable. Sounds like you're pissed and nothing would've made you happy. Absolutely not true. Listen, mistakes happen. I'm aware of that. I don't expect any business to be perfect. The test of a business is how they respond when mistakes happen. I don't even have beef with their standard backup policy. A business is free to offer whatever services they like for whatever price they like. An informed consumer can then make a decision whether they would like to exchange money for those services. How does Selectronic make this not be a one-star review? Simple, I walk in this morning and identify myself, and the reaction is: "Sir, I'd like to apologize for the misunderstanding. It should've been explained to you on Friday that our $99 backup service is just what we consider personal files... which are files found in these specific directories. I'm sorry this wasn't made clear before you agreed to have the service performed. If you like, I can perform a full backup of that hard drive for an additional X dollars, or I'll happily refund the money you've already paid and dispose of the partial backup. Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding, and I hope you won't let this experience sour your view of our company. I'd like the opportunity to win your business again in the future." Boom. Done. Simple, direct. Acknowledge the mistake, offer to make it right. Simple customer service, folks. Learn it. read more

The hard drive on my computer crashed and I was very upset because I had never backed up any of my files. Mr. Hector and his staff were amazing. Great customer service and Mr. Hector was upfront and honest about if I would be able to recover my files (all of my work for my doctorate program and my son's baby pics). Because my hard drive was so fried he wasnt able to recover any data however recommended a place that specialized only in data recovery and sent it off at no cost to me for a free estimate. I have had products repaired at Selectronic on multiple occasions, and I am always very pleased with their service. Recently, I brought an external hard drive to Selectronic for service. The hard drive was older, so I was concerned that it might cost hundreds of dollars to fix. Not only did they get the hard drive back to me quickly, the repair cost was under $100 (between $200 and $400 below the initial estimate)! They actually cleaned the laptop, which was an additional charge that I did not agree to. Pros: military discount and convenient hours/location Cons: - Quality of service- still sticky after the "cleaning" - Tacky business sticker put on my computer without my permission that I had to remove - beware of what services you "authorize" to be performed on your computer/device (not always is this universal as you might think) - be sure to have the receipt reflect exactly what you want to be done Bottom line: the pros definitely do not outweigh the cons at this establishment and you have a 99% chance of having communication issues here, my experience was not pleasant and I would not recommend my worst enemy to go here. read more

I told him i thought it was the hard drive,but insisted that he will test it to make sure; that way he could save me money if it was salvageable. Hector finished the job quickly and efficiently. These guys are great. I spilled liquid on my laptop keyboard. After a day of trying to see if I could save it myself (yeah, right,...) I took it in. They are up front about what they feel the issues could be and do not beat around the bush trying to avoid letting you know what you may pay in fear you will run away... they got it done a day sooner than first expected and were great to work with. In fact, the replacement keyboard turned out to be a bit less expensive then they thought, and instead of "sticking it to me" since they had quoted the higher amount, they let me know, so the cost was less than expected. Major computer issue- Yikes! Mainly concerned about my many photos. I am not computer savvy so I was just saying many prayers on my way to the office. Rosa was so nice and encouraging. She said that they would do what they could but even gave me hope that even if they couldn't fix my old old computer that they could probably get my pictures. At least that was encouraging to know. There was hope. The price was reasonable. And its back to its normal way, they fixed it! The only issue I had with the company is their follow through. They said that my computer would be ready on a Monday- they would call me. I waited til Wednesday and then had to call them myself on it. Then I ordered a battery when I picked up my laptop, they needed to order it. It would be in again on a Monday - they would call me. I admit that I forgot about but still no call from them. I called Friday, 4 days after they said it would be in and they had to call the place where they ordered it from at that point- I would have to wait til Monday, an additional week because it was on back order. I wouldn't have had issue with the battery being delayed but since they said Monday, if it wasn't received by then, they should have called the company to inquire about it then, and then let me know. I think if they say they will call you and give you a date- stick to it or call back and just give a heads up that there's a longer wait. So my only issue is follow through but even then, I worked with Rosa and she was quite friendly. read more

I took my computer in to be cleaned after the fan stopped working. My computer was thoroughly cleaned and the fan was replaced. They prepared me to wait five days at the longest since we are close to a weekend but I got my computer back within 24 hours. Additionally, I was quoted one price, but when they called and said the repairs had been completed, the price went down by $40. They were happy to offer the lower price and I was reassured by their honesty. The staff is very friendly and they get the job done. On top of everything they are happy to give a military discount. Second great experience with Selectronic! Took in my Toshiba laptop in a partially disassembled state to have some thermal compound put on the CPU. It was overheating badly and when I tried to do it, I just wasn't brave enough to yank the motherboard to do it. I trusted them completely to fix it and put it back together and they did not disappoint. They got it taken care of and even did a clean up for me. My laptop crashed while I was working on it one night, unable to even locate its operating system. The OS and the hard drive had stopped communicating and the hard drive was fried. I spoke with Rosa at the front desk who was extremely kind and compassionate (in my moment of need!) and the amazing Hector was able to retrieve all of my documents and images (hooray!). For a very reasonable price I have a disk with all of my files as a backup, a new hard drive on its way, and my computer will be just like new. Finally, some peace of mind. Obvious technical deficiency and high 'Money-GREED' were 2 self-demonstrating red flags I've experienced on my first time business with that shop! Hector Del-Rio, the shop owner (which in any business usually the main shop owner considered the most experienced and knowledgeable about nature of the business he or she has founded) was indeed my main worry after I left my 18.4" Widescreen Display VGN-AW330J VAIO laptop at his shop for screen replacement! Del-Rio's first indication to make me suspicious about the shop's technical abilities was when he claimed 2 little symmetric tombstoned points on both angles of laptop's screen's exterior metal-side (which designed by manufacturer and could be verified on all VAIO laptops of same model online) "Are Both Damages That Already Existing on the Laptop" :)! (Quite 'Mickey-Mouse' expression for a technical-center you expect to resolve your complex technical issues!) His deficiency admission popped up when he commented a few minutes latter that "Working on that type of VAIO laptop will be left to his associate (which was absent at that time!) which obviously showed he has no prior clue or experience about type of laptop I gave him to repair! (Usually you expect less experienced individuals leave more-complex repairs to more experienced, founder and shop-owner to challenge, in that shop was the other way around)! He mentioned verbally and also on his silly none-computer generated hand-wrote primary invoice (in written) that the labor cost to repair the laptop will be $89.00 (Sounds pretty much like psychologically designed 'Number-9' line-up on dollars and cents trick used by used-car dealerships while his labor cost for laptop repair on his shop's wall-board was showing differently)! plus more expenses depending on kind of replacement part/s will be required (Which seem pretty logic), Despite all my worries and doubts he created for me by his comments about his capability but to avoid indecisiveness in business I left the laptop at his shop and left there waiting for his call about additional cost for parts besides the $89.00 labor cost he defined on his invoice when his 'Genius' repair-superman comes back! Hector Del-Rio called me the next day undermining his own given invoice and doubled his labor cost to $180.00 plus additional parts coast (in which he estimated will be around $400.00)! total of nearly $600.00 repair cost! (higher than what authorized manufacturer (SONY) with SONY original brand-parts and guaranteed-repair would cost! When I asked him what caused him to double his cost he came up with even goofier respond, he said because of "The Kind of laptop you have', Your laptop is more complex! :) (Quite a Joke! Based on Del-Rio logic then if I'd give him a cheap old Compaq PC to fix I could reduce his labor-cost to $35.00 since Compaqs are cheap laptops! At that point I noticed he quotes you based on worth of your laptop and brand depending on Del-Rio's Mind-Reading outcome on assessing how much you really want and need your PC not by his labor-cost defined for repairing any laptop! I glad of finding an excuse to release the laptop and revoke the repair rejected the proceeding on the phone and rushed to his shop to get the laptop back, I then carried the laptop to a Real Expert repair shop in Mission Gorge (called 'Tech Experts'), He instantly onsite (before my eyes) disassembled the screen in 3 minutes after experimenting the external monitor result and confidently determined the screen lamp (which comes with new screen) is a defect and needs to be replaced (right on the money!) he then gave me a flat out the door digitally generated repair-quote for $160.92 to order the screen in Texas and gave my PC back 4 days latter in a great conditions without any scratch or dents on laptop with 90 days warranty of parts and labor, I absolutely and definitely suggest that shop, They're really expert on repairing all cell phones, laptops and tablets with very reasonable costs and above all . . . I have used their services a few times and wont go anywhere else! I was having trouble with the keyboard on my laptop, and just happened to be stuck in traffic and notice their sign 'laptop repair'. I have a HP Chromebook that had issues with the screen display. I thought it was the ribbon cable ( I had a similar problem on a laptop in the past) It turned out to be the LCD display screen itself. Yes I too paid 130 for the factory reboot. The reason being is that I could not get internet nor do any repairs in safe mode and regular mode was busted. Selectronic gave me my computer back in 26 hours with no shenanigans. I would definitely go there again. If you can do the reboot yourself then maybe you don't need these guys. I've gone into this business on a few occasions over the years to get help with my computer problems. Each time I'd gone in, I was given the best service and advice on what the issues were with my computer and what I'd need to do to fix it. I've never been let down. My biggest mistake was taking it to someone else who said they had expert techs on staff that could do it cheaper, then had to take it back when it crashed again weeks later. But I learned from my mistake and should have taken it to Selectronics from the start. These folks have integrity in what they do and back their work. I even got a follow up call to see if everything was working properly after having my computer restored to perfect working order. I've worked on computers for years and understand the procedure that needs to be taken to diagnose programming and hardware issues. This was done to the book. I was never left in the dark about what was needing to be done, what the problems were or how much it would cost to fix the problems. What impressed me was when I'd gone in to see them in the past, and explained any problems I'd been experiencing, I was given the CORRECT solutions to fixing the issue, no matter what it was. I'd had a video card go out, was told by someone else it was a bad hard drive needing to be replaced after seeing a screen shot I'd taken. Hector was shown the exact same screen shot and said it was definitely the video card. He was right as usual and told me that what I needed, he didn't have one in stock and told me where to get the one I needed. He didn't try to sell me on something I wouldn't have been happy with, and didn't charge me for taking a look at the computer when I brought it in. And this has happened each time I've gone to him for consultation of any issues I've had. I can honestly say that I'm so glad that he's one of our local neighborhood businesses. I work in retail and so I understand customer service is what makes or breaks a business and this place is definitely 5 star service. He called me 2 days later and told me that the hard drive was actually still good and that it just have a few errors, I told them to go ahead and fix it and I had it back within a week and they recovered all my data and it runs great, and they fixed it for a fraction of the price of what I had paid originally at the other place and what Staples was trying to charge me for a service that it didn't even need. read more
