Enjoyed my diner here. It's an intimate place with memorabilia from its long tenure as a restaurant, there were framed old menus and pictures of the original owner and his family. Our waitress/bartender/hostess was actually his daughter running the show. I ordered a sidecar cocktail it was delicious and refreshing, slightly on the strong side but there's nothing wrong with that. We ordered seafood gumbo and a cup of the soup of the day was a lobster bisque. The gumbo was delicious with bits of shrimp through out the soup, the rice was served on the side and the roux was dark and delicious. The lobster bisque was also good, creamy and rich. We ordered the seafood platter to share. It was more than enough food. It cane with shrimp cocktail, crab cocktail, fried oysters, shrimp, stuffed shrimp with cream cheese and jalapeño, and onion rings. The crab cocktail was just jumbo lump crab in the cup, good but not quite what I expected. Everything else was up to par of what I expected. Although the menu does not state the prices of each menu item, our dinner was in a reasonable range, comparable to other seafood/steakhouses. I may return one day. read more

I saw this place while driving on Shepherd Dr. One day and I really enjoy non chain restaurants so I looked it up the menu and decided to give it a try. We went on a Saturday and it wasn't very busy, most likely because it was game 6 for the Astros in the World Series. We walked in and we were greeted right away by one of the owners who was very nice. We started with some drinks (they do have a full bar) and also some cups of gumbo as a starter. The gumbo was really great! I found a few bones in mine but it was still good. They also had a lobster bisque for the day that was pretty tasty as well. For our meal, we decided to share the seafood platter and it did not disappoint. It came with fried shrimp, fried oysters, jalapeño fried shrimp, shrimp cocktail, crabmeat cocktail, and onion rings. The cocktail sauce and tartar sauce were nice as well. I would for sure eat here again. It is a bit pricey, and the parking isn't very spacious but you can't beat homemade food like this. This cute, quaint, tiny restaurant is very much a home style seafood place. It's not fancy smanshee at all even though its romantic in its own right. The service was very lackluster but fun in a sarcastic kind of way. Not bubbly or excited to help, but there...everyone has a bad day so I'm not saying bad service just not happy friendly. Moving on.... The crab was served in huge chunks which is awesome & I couldn't wait to dig in. Unfortunately, the crab tasted like it had been sitting around for a week, it was not fresh at all. I was afraid but didn't want to make a fuss with the party I was with, so I ate what I could. The fish was flaky but not awesome seasoning, a lot of lemon had to be added to add some taste to it. The salad was super fresh & the thousand island dressing was superb. I want to say I'll try this place one more time because if the crab had been fresh this dish would have been out of sight fabulous! This little gem sits on Shepherd and seats maybe 30 People but the food is lustrous and absolutely amazing- we had the lump crab cocktail- caprese salad, rack of lamb, and rainbow trout! It was really really good! Daughter of Mr. Segaris self established amazingly accomplished restaurant is now operated by a lazy daughter without regard for customer service or quality of food. Disappointed because I've heard such great remarks - obviously from an older generation of most likely early on attendees. Nepotism is real, and blood is thicker than water- and that has proven in this is the case. The restaurant desperately needs trained wait staff and proper amount of staff to accommodate their guests. Shame a classic joint went so downhill. My sorrow goes out to the founder, and recommend better management be put in place to stay in business. Waitress (daughter: Angela) completely rude and unintelligible regarding menu items, inattentive of guests, and we never had our water refilled. Once. Super sad about this! It was our anniversary! Came here on a weekend evening for a light dinner. Ordered the bowl of gumbo, which was very tasty, albeit on the salty side. The bread that accompanied was warm, crispy, yet soft on the inside. I thought the service would have been better. When I asked if the gumbo was spicy, she was like "YEAH, it's GUMBO!" in a sassy but also could-be-construed-as-condescending way. The bread pudding dessert was wonderfully rich and decadent. I wish the menu would have prices, as I was surprised by the cost of the gumbo (about $18). Randomly picked this place for dinner and had never been here before. Did a random google search and wanted some seafood. We called and made a reservation and was not disappointed in the least! Our server was great and also is who greeted us when we walked in. The crab meat cocktail was very good and probably my favorite thing that I had. The rainbow trout was decent on flavor and the presentation was good. I tasted though more seasoning that the actual fish itself. The rack of lamb was a little over cooked and the flavor was good. For the price I felt that there should have been more than there was. The drinks were decent but nothing to write home about. Just kind of a run of the mill standard drink. I asked for the bill, she picked up my plate & saw that I ate 1 shrimp. And she asked if there was a problem with the food. I told her what I thought & she did not like what I had to say. There are no prices on the menu, but we thought whatever we're going to have a nice meal out. We ordered the sharing platter for 3, side salads and one person ordered the fried shrimp platter. The salads too a while, okay, it's a small place. We got them...they were drowning in salad dressing and then had an avocado, tomato slices and orange slices. I am not sure what the hell that is about, they were also 9$ per salad. And the garlic bread was toasted, cold and more like a crouton. We got our entrees and this was nothing more than fried Sysco crap. It was EXTREMELY disappointing. I have had better seafood at a land locked Red Lobster. This is my first trip by recommendation of a few locals... it was awesome. Appetizers - crabmeat cocktail, gumbo was phenomenal. We could not decide what to order for entree so they brought us out a sampler. Rack of lamb chops, sautéed crab and shrimp. Bacon wrapped shrimp, fried oysters. My favorite was the crab and shrimp, fried oysters and the gumbo. They rest was excellent but that's what I will go for when I go back... I don't know how this place does not have 5 stars. Been coming here for years so I'm used to the no prices on the menu just ask and they will tell you. My go to is the shrimp and crab cocktail or the fried shrimp which are huge but ever since ordering the lamb chops with the roasted potatoes it's on our dinner rotation at least once a month along with the sauté crab claws this feeds two with 2-3 chops to go. Make reservations for the weekend nights as I have been sad to find no empty tables even as early as 630. Oh and the house cabernet is pretty good. Parking can be tight and the gravel can ruin your heels. read more

We have driven by this nondescript, little house for years and finally had the opportunity to try it and have gone back again for a date night after a wonderful 1st experience and dinner. The gumbo is hands down one of the best items on the menu and ranks up there with some of the best we have ever had. We also liked the crabmeat cocktail and the sautéed crab fingers. A new appetizer on the menu - bacon with blue cheese and honey - is delicious. We have no complaints about the service and found the waitress to be attentive and friendly. The key lime pie is decent for dessert and others in our group party the 1st visit enjoyed the brownie a la mode. We were not big fans of the seafood platter and preferred the non-fried seafood items. Overall, we love finding this small, hidden gem with a family feel. The history is fascinating and we enjoyed reading the articles and looking at the pictures displayed. This will be added to our rotation for good seafood in the neighborhood. read more

After reading all 6 reviews I decided to give Segaris a go. I wish that I would have just kept the cash and the calories!! The BF and I were the only people in the restaurant for lunch on Monday. Perhaps there is a reason why the restaurant was devoid of customers: Started off with the House Salad w/ Crab appetizer--Good amount of crab, in fact I could have just ordered this and been extremely happy except for the dressing. It is exactly as Melissa B. describes it (it tasted and looked EXACTLY like Wish Bone Italian- complete with the little orange/red chunks & minced garlic). This is their "house" dressing and it blew. Main course--Sauteed Crab Claws. The BF described it perfectly--Crab jerky. It was SO overcooked that it was chewy and almost burned. What a waste of crab!!! For dessert I opted for their famous Bread Pudding w/ Whiskey Sauce. The texture & consistency of the bread pudding is the reason in general, that I don't typically like bread pudding. It is like something that has been smashed together beyond recognition, then flattened into a brick-like sustance. The whiskey sauce was good though..... Our Anniversary dinner date would've been better celebrated at Mc. Donald's than here. From the moment we walked in the waitress was so unpleasant, she sat us down and we thanked her and we got no response, which that happened through out our entire dinning time there., only 2 other tables were occupied. Just over all rude, non-communicative although the place was empty I never got a refill of my sink water lemonade. Menus have no price which that should've rang a bell but I thought we'd give it a try anyways. My daughter ordered a shrimp cocktail appetizer it was a glass with 4 shrimps on the rim and the rest of the cup was cocktail sauce/ketchup ( which she didn't eat) and that alone was $ 24.95 Hubby and I shared a platter for 2 ( $ 69.00 ) and the food was nasty had to drown it in hot sauce for flavoring.. My daughter ordered a steak and fries.... omg the fries were super hard and over crisped there was no potato meat in them.... she was never offered steak sauce or anything. Although my daughter likes her meat well done this steak was an extreme over kill. We ordered a small cup of gumbo and one bowl. I'm so glad I ordered a cup because it was nasty had to add lots of hot sauce and I only ate the broth. Basically our $ 172 anniversary meal had to be drowned in hot sauce in order to get a decent bite out of it. I would have gladly paid the price had the food been good or more importantly if the waitress would've been more cordial............ at least make your customers feel welcome or was it because we were a biracial couple? 6 of us went to eat at Johnathon the Rub today for $ 124.00 and their gumbo was delicious not to mention the service. OK I did not know Sam either...and had heard of this place for years...and could never find it for years. It was about 8 years ago that there was finally a sign on the place (NOW i find it!!) Forever, I have been wanting to go and try it, but with all of the other restaurants in the Heights, I seem to forget it. Why??? Well one, I could never find it way back when, and 2 ever since Sam died, I rarely hear about it and 3 I knew by word of mouth it was pricy. Not that I am against paying high prices, but I cant always afford it. As my husband and I were turned away from our usual spots due to long wait times, we were driving back to the Heights and there Segari's was! YES! Lets go!! Ok I was suprised it was not crouded, and suprised there was no prices on the menu, however, I have found another seafood restaurant in Houston that serves FRESH LUMP CRAB Cocktail. WOW, price who cares, I am a crab lover and this was devine. It was worth every penny. The wine list is not great, but this is not Max's of Mockingbird Bistro, this is Segaris, the seafood restaurant that everyone who went there knew Sam and Food Critics loved. For dinner I had the redfish toped with crab (shocker) with mixed veggies. Husband had the steak and potatoes. All were very well prepared and tasted wonderful. Fish was light and flakey and the crab..well what else have I not said about crab??! We also had the bread pudding for dessert. A large square piece with an amazing burbon sauce. I could have had just the sauce and been happy happy happy! So ok, the exterior and interior are nothing to ride home about, but I found the staff accommodating and the noise level low. Since it was also a place where they welcomed pipes and cigars, it had no reminats of a smoke smell. Ok so its not Brennan's, but it is not Joes Crab Shack either. My wife surprised me last night with a date-night dinner at Segari's. We liked it! It's a small restaurant on Shepard Dr., halfway between Washington Ave and Interstate 10. Seating is quite limited so I would definitely recommend making a reservation The wait staff were very polite, seating us immediately and giving us recommendations. As an appetizer, we started with a cup of their shrimp and sausage gumbo. Delicious. Try it We also observed customers who ordered the lump crab salad. Previous reviews and fellow customers complimented the lump crab salad. For our main courses, my wife had the Fried Shrimp and I had the lamb. The lamb was quite good but the Fried Shrimp was even better...wonderful taste and a very light batter. The lamb came with a choice of Fries, Onion Rings or Potatoes. My wife had the fries and I had the onion rings. The fries were much better For desert, we shared a piece of the Coconut Meringue Pie. Absolutely delicious...save room because it is so worth it. I have driven past this place hundreds of times and never noticed it. Last night we were out with another couple who had been there before. They called for reservations, which is a good idea. There are only 8 or 10 tables. With that cozy a place, conversations between the tables and the employees are inevitable and enjoyable. Needless to say the service is great. It's the owner!! To the food,,,,,,,, you always hear people say " It's the best". I believe this place really does live up to that. I had the sauteed crab claws. They were great. I have had crab claws in many places. I've never had any better. My wife had grilled shrimp. I stole one or two. They were great. My friend is something of a lamb fanatic. According to him, they were great. It was our anniversary, so our friends picked up the ticket. If you look at the pictures of the menu, you won't see prices. I have no idea about pricing. It was worth it, what ever it cost. So, if you want to try this place ( and I highly recommend you do) you might want to call ahead and ask about the prices before committing to reservations. But even if it is just a little bit outside of your typical range, save up and when that one very special occasion arises, treat yourself and your special other to a meal for the ages. read more

I lack the ability to lavish this restaurant with the accolades it deserves. It is near where I used to live. My wife and I drove by it countless times over the years without ever stopping. Looks like an old house. Nothing from the outside attracts you to this gem. Don't be fooled. Once discovered, it quickly became our absolute favorite . 1. Very homey and quaint inside. Wonderful ambience. Seats only about 30 to 35 patrons. Another 7 or 8 at the bar. 2. A place to relax while u eat, to linger, to enjoy, to converse. U don't want to leave when u are done eating. That pleasant. 3. Food is superb. I like the crab meat cocktail, lamb chops, & rainbow trout the best, but all other items are great too. 4. Founded by the late Sam Segari. Now operated by his daughter Angela. There is a loving picture of the two of them on the wall. A picture tells u a thousand words. This picture reflects to me the deep admiration they had for each other and for the restaurant. Never met Sam. Have to believe he would be proud of his daughter today. Angela and her staff offer superb and friendly service without being overbearing. A family owned restaurant does not exist for 45 years without being very special. This one is. 5. On the expensive side, but well worth it. 6. Although I eat in restaurants all the time, it is mostly for convenience. This is one of the few where I truly enjoy the experience.
