I have a dear dear friend who has had a significant emotional disability all of his life. He's now in jail. I have been a very important source of emotional support for him for 9 years. Through all of his desperate and trauma driven bad choices. For 2 days he's been trying to call me and for 2 days I've been trying to get a securus account functioning. Of course you can't speak to an actual human at securus. Their multi million dollar profits are much much too important to actually pay people to even marginally accomplish their "services". I'm terribly frightened to think of what my friend may be going through right now as a result of this. He may well be feeling that I have finally rejected him and don't want to talk to him. Which is completely wrong. And very dangerous. It is my sense that often the best help that can be had for a person whose life has fallen apart so much that they are an inmate in any of these institutions, may be to have a redemptive talk with a loved one. Those conversations might actually go a long long way to helping them fix their lives. APPARENTLY the folks who run these phone "services" in these institutions have no capability whatsoever for any experience even remotely resembling compassion. And they likely have no interest whatsoever in even considering such. Meanwhile, the most unfortunate and disabled individuals in our society are likely just considered road kill within the quest of these apparently heartless corporate types to get for themselves yet another million dollars. And I wouldn't doubt that the contracts for these type government "services" are mainly rewards "earned" by being the largest donor to certain politicians political campaigns. Yes be upset at the result. But realize that the real customers for Securus are Homeland Security, NSA and other LEOs -- not the people on the phones. Everything is recorded and computer scanned and "potentially interesting stuff" flagged for human examination. There is no "client attorney privilege" for telecommunications under the Patriot Act as proven in dozens of lawsuits. Customers service problems? Well you are not the real customer so what do you expect? And every freaking jail has its own contract and can have its own special terms. So no way that a centralized staff can keep up with that stuff. Rolls right on down to payment issues as payment structures are different and themselves more important for monitoring. Money handling is really done by the most brute force banking and credit rules available with no reconsiderations. Those rules are all that so many different contracts and surveillance needs have in common. Plus your payment problems and reactions are merely another LEO tool for cracking cases (will you slip up and make a threat with real clues in it, e.g. "The X Cartel will be visiting Securus in 45 minutes!!!") -- before being resolving money issues. Very complex, highly burdened surveillance technology on top of the actual basic communications. Thus dropouts are to be expected. Securus itself has very modest rates as places like Travis County Jail prove. BUT local jail officials negotiate separate contracts and can legally ask for whatever kick back fees they want. Those fee are NOT public funds nor are they telecommunications fees subject to the FCC. Frequently those jail imposed fees supplement or replace public taxes for jail and regular LEO operations and pay for body armor etc not authorized by local government. But its also legal for the local sheriff (if he is the one to negotiate the contract) to put these fees into his personal retirement or election fund. Haven't been able to receive phone calls because they have a "routing issue". Despite submitting a trouble card 3 weeks ago, nothing has been resolved. They don't know what (if anything) is being done to fix it, and they have no idea when it might be fixed. All they do is tell us to call back in a few days and check. When we call back, it's the same run-around. Don't know what's been done, don't know what going to be done, call back in a few days. They won't call us or take any responsibility to get with the technicians to find out what the plan is to fix the problem. Horrible service. read more

I've never known anyone incarcerated until 2 months ago. Trying to navigate a simple phone call, or video via SECURUS has left me more devastated than words can express. The *** hole my loved one is being held (Dell Valle, TRAVIS COUNTRY, Austin TX) does not allow face to face visits. No email. Only video or collect phone calls. SECURUS charges $1.80 for the call, and $13.80 just because they can. In one instance, I was attempting to chat online for SECURUS support as my first video chat wasn't going through. I was told I was #12 in the line, and after over 1.5 hours of waiting for an online chat, when I finally was #2, I got a message saying, "your online chat has been cancelled." Securus online tech support is a joke, left holding for 1.5 hours, and then my call is cancelled. I was left on hold for 20+ minutes on phone support. No one answers the 800 number. Not once did a tech or the SECURUS site ever inform me prior to my video call that SECURUS is not compatible with Apple computers, only PC. So, no face to face, no email only financial RAPE by video on a PC or phone. The sock puppets that run SECURUS should be in jail themselves for the pain and suffering they cause people for the fact they have a loved one in jail. I've had to contact their customer service twice -- first because I put $$ into the wrong product (their system seems to be purposefully confusing and challenging), and second because even though the facility approved my request to have a video chat with an inmate, their system did not update that approval. I had the worst experience with customer service in my life. Talked with 4 different people and was told something different every time. One time I asked to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold for 10 minutes only to be told that the supervisor stepped out. I called back to Securus and spoke to another person. When I asked to speak to a supervisor she told me that they were a call center and do not have supervisors. All I can say is they have dishonest people in their customer service. The third time worked but when I contact them to try to expedite money back to my account because I have no money in my account they told me no and that im supposed to wait for the 3 or two days. It is terrible. This system is expensive and tech support is pathetic. Surely there are better phone services, and an almost $8.00 fee, regardless of the amount of deposit is ridiculous, considering they are charging too much per phone call to begin with. I have personally attempted to resolve several issues, and they send a 'form' email asking your name and number, which of course is part of your "account" and then they want your pass code, and the message states "status: closed" I am sure hoping you will not bother them again. Oh, I have never been so aggravated. This "company" does not even deserve 1 star. It's a total scam. So a couple weeks ago I had a very good friend wind up in jail...he's innocent, but that's beside the point here. So naturally I wanted to be able to video chat with him, as it's the only option right now. The jail doesn't even allow visitors, so this was the next best thing. Well...it's not. They make you jump through hoops to try and get an account set up, then you have to submit government issued ID, as well as photos of yourself. OK, that's fine. Then you can schedule an appointment for a 'video visitation.' So I did that, anxiously awaited the time, logged on to finally be face to face with my best friend...but no. Instead I got to stare at a white screen that said it was trying to connect for the entire 20-minute visitation. And now I'm being billed for this. It's bullshit to say the least. So then I went to the website to try and live chat with somebody at the company. Ummm, their idea of live chat is redirecting you to a webpage of frequently asked questions. There is no LIVE part of the equation here. So from there they have a number for customer service. Again, a total joke! Nobody answers the phone, I don't even believe there is an office OR a phone that really exists. The automated voice estimates you'll be on hold for 4 minutes. Well, I patiently waited on hold for OVER AN HOUR, in the hopes that somebody would be able to help me and I could set up a future video visit. Nope. Nobody home. In reading other reviews, it's clear that nobody ever answers the phone, and nobody mans the live chat option. The Better Business Bureau is FULL of complaints for this 'company' as well. To say this company is corrupt is an understatement. At the present, I'm only out the $5 that I clearly will never get back, but I can only imagine the other people and families that are out much more than that, with no options and no chance of a refund. It's SICK. I'm mainly upset that I have NO available options now to see the face of a person I may never get to see in real life again. It's disgusting and heartbreaking. Securus is the WORST. It should be criminal for them to charge the long distance prices they do. I am in CA and my loved one is in a correctional facility in TX. A 20 minute phone call costs me almost $30, and that doesn't include the minutes on my cell phone. There are ways around this, get yourself a local google number for free, and have it forwarded to your cell or landline. OR, use inmateaid.com, they will get you a local line, for a reasonable price. Securus will lie to you and tell you you can't do that. You can. Securus pays the state a kickback in order to have the monopoly that they do - so it's a win-win for Securus and the jail, and a lose-lose for the inmates and their families. Before we figured out a way around it, my family spent nearly $2,000. on phone calls. Securus knows you're desperate and will do whatever you can to see that your loved one has a friendly voice. Most families cannot afford to call often, if at all. If your line gets blocked, call Securus and tell them your loved one can't get through and they'll give you some horseshit story about why it was blocked and then they'll unblock it. You may have to do this multiple times. Securus RECORDS EVERYTHING. No matter where the number came from, all calls are recorded - so there IS NO compromise of security. Besides, I'd really like to see the actual numbers, the facts, about their claim that they're preventing crimes and saving lives (this is why they say their fees are so high). Its preposterous. You can barely hear who you're talking to and get cut off half the time - that would be a pretty ineffective system to use if you're seriously trying to save lives. Securus is an evil, Evil, EVIL company, that cares about profits above all else. Their customer service is a joke. They are rude and inefficient and unhelpful. Every time I call them I ask when they are going to comply with the new FCC ruling. Sometimes they say they don't know anything about it. When I ask to speak to a supervisor, they say I can't. (That's not true because before the ruling, I spoke with a supervisor on request.) They give you a standard template response that you have to write (snail mail) to the company if you have questions about their procedures. Two guesses if anyone ever responds at all, much less with something informative. Google Securus complaints, google about the FCC ruling, about the other prison phone companies, and about the original lawsuit that brought about the ruling. As with many of the other reviews that I have read below, if I could give this "business" a zero, I most certainly would. As I sit here waiting to speak to a customer service rep, once again, I find the initial canned response of "the average wait will be 4 minutes" laughable. Previously, I have waited 57 minutes and then had very little success once I did get through. I would never in my life put up with that kind of customer service if I didn't need to talk to a real person. Right now, I am only holding for 19 minutes - far cry from the "average 4 minutes". (However, I am using my time productively. I think I have forgotten what I called about. I'm sure there was more than one thing.) The bottom line is (Wait, I'm through - 32 minutes. A record.), I want to be able to hear my son's voice every now and then. I don't understand this process. I thought he would be able to make a collect call and I would be billed on my phone bill. I find out that, like everything else, you need to sign-up or be a member or whatever to use it. So, I started looking for something cheaper. And to even use that cheaper service, you still have to go through Securus first. BS!! I'm going to have to bite the bullet and only hear from him once in a while because I can't afford the insane prices. Even trying to add money online doesn't work properly. That's why I was on the phone tonight. The same problem happened the last time I tried to put money in the account so my son could call. And I could almost guarantee that the person on the other end of the line was the same one that I had spoken to in the past. No wonder the wait time is so long. That poor girl has some long hours. OMG. Just glanced at another review and the similarities are mindboggling. The 7-week response to an email - WHAT?! Mine was about customer service. I didn't bother. They asked for my social security # NEVER give out your SOCIAL SECURITY # especially to some company called Securus Tech even if the correctional facility uses them! Your inmate will just have to wait to make calls as they need to purchase a $30 phone card that has up to 300 mins other wise we are throwing away $$$$ on this dang phone service - Securus - tell your inmate you will keep your $50 or 100 for when they get out. $50 gets you 5-6 calls vs prepaid 20 calls! Dealing with Securus Technologies has hands down been one of the worst experiences of my entire life. They are next to impossible to get a hold of (generally an hour+ hold times plus an extensive automated menu before even getting out on hold), and once you do get a hold of somebody, they almost NEVER have and OUNCE of customer service knowledge. After this long hold they will tell you to fill out a form online, print it out, mail it in, then maybe the will address your problem/refund you for a visit that failed because Securus was not up and running. Also, AT LEAST once a month or more frequently they have system issues that will not even allow visits to be completed. Securus is more of an inconvenience than anything and I would rather be able to visit my loved one face to face for free than lose money on a daily basis being forced by the monopoly of Securus to use their services. The customer services representatives are impatient and do not answer questions. Felt like I was talking to a politician where all I got was a lot of squawking without any real information. After talking to them twice, I still don't have any idea of how it works and neither does the inmate. Beware of the costs. It cost $3.54 for a 38 second voice mail. The rate listed was 0.18 but didn't say it was per second, or minute or hour. I think clearly the answer is by the second. You have to have two accounts. One to receive a collect call from the inmate which they are up front about and one to retrieve a voice mail which they are not up front about. This company is the worse company I have done business with. Its already sad and hard to have someone in jail, but to then be robbed by the only way to be in contacted with them. The services are already expensive, but if something doesn't work, as per video calls, it's always because of the customer's fault. Customer service takes hours to be answered and then when it is, nothing gets solved. This company over charged me $200 (as per their own records) throughout the length of two month. The calls were e supposed to be free because of COVID19, but they charged anyhow, under another service. This people deserves to be in jail their self. I placed dispute charges with my credit cards and due to that fact I was blocked from all services. Wow, I am serious beyond pissed right now with how Securus SCAMS people. I had a video visit scheduled, and it would not connect at all! I passed the system check, meaning that everything on my end was supposed to be working just fine. But no, I spent the whole 20 minutes of the time that I PAID FOR, trying to connect with no luck. Called their representatives, waiting for almost 40 minutes to speak to someone just to be told to try a different browser. Really? I went back and read everything they had written about connections, and NOTHING says about browsers. It says that if the system check passes, you're good to go and have your visit. Which I double checked multiple times and was "good to go"!!! Asked for a refund, or at least to have my session rescheduled and they refused. I get an email from the company before a video call to an inmate that says..."Don't forget you can easily visit from your Android™ or Apple smartphone, tablet, or computer that has internet access" Call does not go through. I call Securus and get a human that says...we are having issues with Apple products. Hmmm, then why didn't they tell me that when they sent the email? How long to receive credit (not refund!)? Weeks. Tried again on Android product. Did not work. This time their phone system doesn't even allow you to talk to a human. Send a letter to your loved one. Odds are Securus can't/won't connect you to them and you will be out good money. Jails need to drop their contract with Securus. I am highly disappointed with this company and will no longer be providing my business. My loved one has been incarcerated for a little over 3 years now, so I can only imagine the money I have spent through Securus with funding the phone account, making video visits weekly, buying stamps to send emails, and all the other services they provide. I do it all. I recently have been blocked from using my card and went as far to get another card to be able to fund my loved one account. I have called numerous times. Each time you call, you'd be lucky if you get a rep on the phone. Today I called and was able to get a rep when she placed me on hold to further look into my issue, the call disconnected. I called back, just to be on hold for 2 hours 2 minutes and 55 seconds to be exact when the phone hung up on me. The customer service is terrible when I'm going over and beyond to not only fund my loved one account, but to also support a business who does not starve to keep the people's business. I love my love one to the moon and back, but I can no longer support Securus. I will be closing my account, and requesting the remaining money that's left on my phone account. My son has been incarcerated in the past. Securus charged outrageous amounts for phone calls. Last time it was 'down' to $14.95 for 20 minutes. This time he is not incarcerated. He entered a substance abuse program willingly. Still he tried to call for his first time tonight and the voice kept referring to him being an 'inmate' and 'incarcerated' while he is not. But then Securus has an antiquated and unnecessarily complicated system to sign up for minutes. The robot voice kept repeating options and I couldn't get out of the loop. Setting up a phone account for my son to call should be an easy affair, right? Not with Securus. They seem like they're working with technology that's ancient. It seems like it's a company with zero integrity. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. Please look for another vendor. There are many qualified phone companies that would like this contract and could deliver. This company is the worst company I have ever dealt with! I would leave 0 stars if I could. We have a direct bill account and if the bill isn't paid BEFORE the due date they will block your call. My bill was due today and the account is already blocked. Then to try and call to make a payment (because I attempted to pay online but it wouldn't let me update my card information "card type" so it wouldn't process my payment) and then had to sit listening to the recorded messages for 2 minutes before I could even get to a menu - then good luck trying to connect with a human! For being a company with their main business being facilitating phone calls you would think they would have a better system in place for those seeking assistance with their account via telephone. I ended up finally finding a way to connect to a rep and sat on hold for 30 minutes! Yes, 30 minutes (according to the timer on my phone)! So I hung up because I also have a job to do so I can't sit on hold for that long - I then attempted to "Chat" online so I could get my issues resolved and waited AGAIN for close to 10 minutes! Then the chat rep finally communicated with me and I was helping a client that came in and the rep states if I don't respond within 60 seconds then he will close the chat - really!?! I wait on hold for 30 minutes on the phone and never connect with a rep and you can't wait more than 60 seconds on the live chat. Ridiculous! If I could use a different company I would - my only resort is to leave feedback to warn others don't get involved with this company! read more

Their support is non-existent and their agents are not at all knowledable in basic Microsoft windows software. I tested my system and my web cam and everything checked out fine and I was able to see my camera and sound working. when I connected to the video visit, it did not work. Called tech support and was on hold for 35 minutes. I looked at my account and my account showed "video visit completed successfully" so they took the money, did not provide the service, and don't have support when their ancient outdated software does not work. This was the THIRD PC I tried to make their software and video call work. I can use all my PCs to do video calls on Facebook, Webx, Google chats, and any number of "real" video conference software...but forget about trying to get Securus video services to actually work.
