I'm an inner city elementary school teacher who was simply trying to do a student a favor. One of my student's glasses broke (specifically, it needed a screw in one of the eye wire to prevent the lens from falling out). My student suffers from albinism that causes low vision, meaning that she experiences significant vision loss and cannot be without her glasses. Light (even that from overhead florescents) is a significant problem due to the lack of pigment in her eyes and her glasses have a constant tint for indoor use and get darker when she is in the sun. Knowing that her parents are less than diligent in her care, she brought them to me, and I felt that I have a duty to help her. I came to Second Street Optique and briefly explained my situation to the woman at the front desk, seeing if she will be willing to help. Uninterestedly, she glanced at the glasses and noted that it is also missing a notepad, and that it will cost $10 to replace the screw and notepads since it is not obtained from their store. Now, if I was bringing in my own glasses, fine, charge me, I'll pay. But even explaining that I was trying to help out a student, the saleswoman seemed apathetic, lacked any compassion, and remained all about profit. We left without fixing the glasses here. Fortunately, we were able to find another optical shop, Kurata in Little Tokyo, with much better service and were completely empathic. Found this fantastic store back in 2019. I walked in with my kiddos and browsed the store. Marc was super helpful and kind. I was not ready for new glasses but I was happy to see the selection and they carried a designer I loved. I was treated so kindly as though I was going to make a big purchase. Pandemic hit and I finally made my way back to the store recently. Again I walked in with all of my kiddos and he was super helpful. I left with two amazing pairs of eyeglasses. I've used Yelp to profile restaurants, doctors and all types of businesses for years now, but never felt compelled to write a review. "Second Street Optique" in Long Beach deserves my first review... I was looking to invest in some quality, well-fitting and stylish sunglasses that looked great on me. I was interested in timeless looks, because I recently donated the last of my stockpile of sunglass frames I've acquired through the years from my different eye doctors' offices, Lens Crafters and most recently Costco. I don't appreciate pressure sales of any kind or being followed around while I shop (I know the lovely staff members in some stores are just doing their job well and are trying to be helpful though, but I like to shop alone :) ). I also like to take my time to meticulously scour the store's inventory, picking what I like as I go, and trying it all on in one fail swoop to narrow down my favorites. After having lunch on 2nd Street, we sauntered into "Second Street Optique" to check out the frame styles. The store was very clean and inviting and was laid out beautifully and had a warm, comfortable vibe to it. There was a nice selection of sunglass frames, as well as non-sunglass frames. Marc greeted us with a warm welcome and offered us to take our time to look around and to let him know if we had any questions or needed assistance. After narrowing down the frames to 5 that I liked, I asked Marc for his opinion. He helped me pick the frames that went well with my face shape as well as the prescription (near-sighted). He didn't try to pressure sell me or tell me all the frames looked great...if it didn't look the best on me, he kindly steered me to the ones that did. I knew what looked good on me, and what didn't, and I appreciated his honesty. Marc was beyond knowledgable and took the time to explain the materials offered and the process of the lens-making in layman's terms. I was a little concerned that because of my prescription, I would be wearing thicker lenses than what the frames could stylishly accommodate, which was not the look I was going for. I have been to other places that have said they couldn't accommodate the look I was going for and what I got in the end was very thick lenses that did not look good in the frames and would stick out (like coke bottle glasses). Marc didn't rush through the explanation process and made me understand what I was purchasing, which made me feel comfortable about my ultimate choices (I bought 2 pairs). I learned things about eyewear that I wish had been explained to me when I first started wearing glasses years ago! I picked up my finished sunglasses, which Marc fitted for me, and they both looked beautiful and felt fantastic on my face! The workmanship was phenomenal and the lenses looked great. I have received many compliments on the glasses. I will be donating my last two pairs of designer eye glasses I currently use, which I bought from Costco, and will be back to see Marc to invest into a pair (and a backup) that doesn't hurt my nose or face by the end of the day. Aside from the above, Marc's professionalism, knowledge, patience, genuine consideration and kindness toward his clients have made us customers for life. I have never had such a comprehensive, well-informed, enjoyable experience getting a pair of frames and lenses. I have worn both pairs of sunglasses for a few weeks now, and have to say that I haven't had such a crisp, beautifully-colored view of the world as I have had with these lenses. I had been on the search for new glasses for quite some time and a friend of mine referred me to second street optique. I had shopped so many Dr's offices, lenscrafters etc and was never able to find anything very special. I met Marc and was so pleased with his knowledge of eyewear and progressive lenses. He helped me to choose a hand made Barton Perreira frame and a Retrospecs sunglass. After only one week, my frames and lenses were ready to pick up! I absolutely love the frames, but I love the lenses even more! I wear progressive lenses and have had a very hard time getting adjusted to them in the past. My previous lenses were Varilux (very expensive) lenses and Marc had consulted with me about switching lens designs to their Seiko digital lenses ($200 less than Varilux). I called ahead and asked if they could re size my sunglasses that I bought on a website( a little bit too tight for me), they told me to come on by. I walked in to a very clean, shop that felt like a beautiful "beach/art deco" gallery of glasses and frames. Jennifer was extremely pleasant and when I told her my situation she Immediately remembered the phone call that I made 3+ hours earlier! She fixed my shades very quickly while still taking good care of them. She then also taught me a lot about glasses in general. Wow! What a great experience. The bridge on my glasses broke away from the lens and I don't have another pair. I took the glasses in and Jennifer - the infamous Jennifer of Yelp fame - helped me. She did not have the pieces she needed to fix my glasses, so she took apart a pair of glasses that were in the display and used pieces of the display glasses to fix my glasses. It would have been so easy to send me away and have me wait for the part to be delivered in the future, but she did not do that - she was creative and fixed my problem right then. Wow! I have been looking for someone to swap my lenses in my sunglasses. I have checked other places but they said they could not do prescription on my type of glasses or the price was outrageous. I walked in to see what they can do. Marcus said they would be able to get it done in two weeks and at a good price. He sat me down, got a couple of measurements and asked me some question of what I wanted. A week later he calls me to say they are ready for pick up. I stopped by to pick them up and Cassandra helped me out right away. She had me put them on and try them out, cleaned them for me and adjusted them right away. It made me feel like a VIP. I was happy to have an opportunity for a do-over and to update my review. On 4/18/14 I received a voice message from Jennifer asking if I had visited the shop on 4/13. To start with, the fact that the staff had 1) read the review 2) actively searched their database in an attempt to find out who I was and 3) called me to discuss my experience... speaks highly of their commitment to deliver good care to their customers. This alone gets 5 stars in my book. We all have good days and bad days and we all make slips...I think we both had bad days last Sunday. I purchased some amazing (out of production) Oliver People glasses here and had the most pleasant expierience here! I have a wide head and find that near all glasses punch my temples often causing headaches. I came in seriously doubting I'd find anything worthwhile, but I was in dire need of new glasses. In minutes the owner picked out a fresh pair of Wyler style Oliver Peoples and the fit was perfect! No headaches and no pain!!! The style and color was magnificent, but unfortunately they were out of production (the we're part of the spring collection), but this eyewear guru found them by ordering them as sunglasses and exchanging the lenses for my prescription. I have been a wearing glasses since I was young and have never been happy with the lenses that I have gotten from places like costco or lenscrafters. My lenses always looked like coke bottles. I was walking down 2nd street and noticed second street optique. I was curious because the store was so beautiful. I was greeted pleasantly by a young lady immediately and told her that I was "just looking" She made it a point to show me how all the beautiful cabinetry works, so that I could feel free to try anything on. She checked back in with me a few minutes later, which was very welcoming. I appreciate the fact that they didn't hover over me while I looked. I had picked out a couple frames that I liked... She noticed that I needed attention and was immediately there for me. I asked her what she thought of the pieces that I selected for myself and she asked me if I had a current prescription with me and I said no but told her that I am a -5.50 in both eyes. She offered to call my Dr. for me to get a copy which I obliged her with his name. She introduced herself as Jennifer and showed me a few more options that would work with my prescription. I then chose a Tom Ford Frame - by the way, the selection is BY FAR the best in l Long Beach!! She then had me sit down at the back table and she gave me all the lens options possible! This has never been the case for me before. I chose ultra thin hi-index plastic lenses with the best Crizal coatings. I told her, ok now that I have ordered the best and thinnest lenses - they better be beautiful! Less than a week later, Jennifer called me to let me know that my glasses were ready. I went to pick up the glasses and they were stunning!! The thinnest wafer lenses ever and they didn't make my eyes look small like all the other crummy polycarbonate lenses that I got at other big box stores. This is a super quaint store where selection is bar none the best in Long Beach. Thank you Jennifer for making my vision not only functional but fashionable as well, you are an absolute pleasure to work with!.
