My thinking is usually...'If you don't like a place, just don't return', so I don't bother to write bad reviews...but our horrible experience keeps haunting us, so here I am writing about the little slice of hell we encountered at Seared. My husband and I took a date-night out and came to this place as we love to dine in Petaluma and hadn't been to this spot. We also dig steak and seafood, so perfect, we thought. We were greeted by a very welcoming guy (after 2 different women passed by without saying anything), but he was great. The noise from a couple of 'really drunk' tables had us ask for a quiet(er) part of the place. He acknowledged the request stating they even put up sound-squelching panels (which they had) but it didn't seem to do much good. No matter as he placed us near the big open kitchen which was fine and it was quieter. Our server (daughter of Satan, it turned out) blew up to our table so effusively excited to see us that it took us off-guard, but that was fine. Extra-happy is okay. My husband ordered a glass of wine and she delivered it in seconds with a side of the table swoop that made us jump as we didn't see her coming. Also...fine. We then ordered and started with a salad which was quite nice (the Winter Salad). I ordered a side of Gulf prawns that she didn't deliver, so I had to flag down the server assistant. He was awesome as it turned out, giving us the only decent service we had all night. We couldn't get her attention to tell her she forgot half the order because she and and another server were too busy gossiping (and they were just steps away from us). Again, this is not a big deal, as she got the shrimp fairly quickly. He response was "I forgot"! I didn't know how to react other than, 'can we get them?' We got them. Then our dinner came and it was 'okay' at best. I ordered the Filet but it was dunked up with two toppings...a bleu cheese butter and it was swimming in a demi-glasse....I mean, wouldn't one of them do without conflicting flavors in every bite(?) The meat was good though. My husband had the Halibut and the veggie medley that the (barely 3 oz of fish sat on) was a jumble of crappy veggies that were over-cooked. He didn't like his dish at all. Mine was okay as mentioned. Then the trouble started. We didn't see our emotionally all-over-the-place server again, but we saw her gossip endlessly with the other female server non-stop, so the great busman got us dessert menus. He suggested the 'donuts' and that sounded GREAT to me. Too bad they were awful. As we were finishing I asked the server who I had to flag down if they had been microwaved....cause they had been. The were OVERLY hot in the middle and soft. She said NO! They re deep-fried. I said 'I don't think so' as they....and then she cut me off and stomped away from the table. The female manager came up and I was flabbergasted by the exiting server and I said..."Wow, our server just....' Once again I was cut-off, this time by the 'manager' who said..."Oh I know, she's is a bit off as she just had surgery." I guess she had her personality removed. I mean...what the heck was she doing serving the public if she was in some kind of pain. She wasn't too sick to ignore us and run her mouth to her colleague nonstop. So, I told the manager that the donuts were very not-good and I thought they had been microwaved as they are spongey and soft on the outside with some awful berry sauce on them. She cut me off again and said...NO, they are deep-fried. I let it go. She also told us that we shouldn't be upset by the service, that all our upset should go toward her....WTF? Anyhoo, I still tipped 15%. I mean, the manager woman could have offered to take the missing shrimp off the bill, or the awful donuts, but she did not. As we left, our server ran in back of the bar to avoid us. This was like...let's gang up on the paying customer and make them feel terrible. Needless to say we will NEVER darken their door again. There is so little professionalism at this place that looks just like the closed down previous restaurant that was there. It had good food and service. Too bad it's gone. We felt so bummed after driving up from Novato to be treated so poorly. read more
