The best sushi in Evanston quality-wise, the best deal in Chicago price-wise.
Seriously, it's gotten to the point where whenever someone suggests to me a new sushi place I think in my head how I'd much rather go to Sea Ranch and be confident that for $20 I can eat all the awesomely delicious sushi I desire.
I come here pretty regularly for lunch and dinner. Lunch is always one of their udon sets - either the tempura udon or a new one that's a fried vegetable pancake on top of the udon (I can't remember the name). I really don't like California rolls, which come with the udon and ramen sets, but they always allow me to substitute a tuna roll for no extra charge.
Dinner is ALWAYS the $20 all-you-can-eat option. I would recommend coming before 6pm if you want to do this, both to maximize eating time and also to ensure that you can snag a table (there's only about 6 tables in the place). I love all their specialty rolls, and they're definitely the best bang for your buck in the all-you-can-eat. The fish here, while not the widest selection, is always really good quality (unlike some Evanston restaurants, at Kuni I had a piece of fatty tuna that tasted so disgusting I had to spit it out). The only fish I order here which is not totally consistent is the yellowtail. Everything else always looks so great it almost looks like the fake plastic food. Their salmon is always always amazing and I order at least 2 pieces of nigiri.
The service here is also amazing, considering how most all-you-can-eat sushi places try and pad out the rolls with rice or rush you through your meal or impose rules like "you must order 3 rolls each person every time you order" (ahem, House of Sushi and Noodles). One particular time really shows how great their service is: we arrived at 7:30pm and had to wait a half hour for a table. We sat down and placed our orders at 8pm. They close a 9, and we didn't get our huge first order until around 8:30pm. We stayed until almost 10pm, at their urging because they wanted to make sure we got to eat everything we wanted. At around 9:45pm they ran out of rice, for which they profusely apologized and plied us with offers of noodles (udon or ramen) and nigiri. Most places would have just kicked us out at 9pm, and definitely would have kicked us out after running out of rice, but these guys just offer you what they have. So awesome.
Also, free tea (awesome) and a sparse but good selection of Japanese goodies. I always stock up on miso and green tea after I'm finished eating.
Minus one star is because of the lack of seating. It would be a half star, but I can't do that. read more
