I know people who simply love love LOVE this place. Unfortunately, I've never been able to figure out why. And I've given them plenty of chances. I will say that most of their stylists are very creative with color. They use techniques that add a flavor I haven't been able to get elsewhere (and no, I don't do crazy or unnatural colors, but I do like to spice up the typical bronzey highlights and chocolatey lowlights from time to time.) BUT, they tend to go overboard. One stylist (don't remember her name) rather brutally insisted on chopping off four inches from my long, thin hair (AAARG!) and adding in thick, very short layers because it was "so damaged it's about to fall off anyway." To be fair, the cut itself was executed just fine - it's not like it was horribly uneven or mangled or anything. But it was so wrong for me, looked so terrible on my face and frame, and was so far from what I had asked for that I actually went home and cried afterwards, something I haven't done over a haircut since I was, like, 10. Yet, I still went back a year or so later, and this time I had to forcefully argue with a DIFFERENT stylist that NO, I did NOT want to try their new platinum-blonde formula instead of the regular, medium-blonde touch-up I'd asked for. On more than one occasion, I have been seated next to another client who was back for the 2nd or 3rd time to get something fixed from the last time she was there. And the scariest part of all is a lot of them think they're God's gift to hair and will loudly make fun of clients to each other while the salon is full. They act like they've done you a favor rather than the service you paid for. The blatant arrogance just isn't justified by the quality of work. Relatively affordable, though. I suppose that deserves a second star. read more

The $120 mistake doesn't even cover a free bottle of lotion (worth $13 that disagrees with my skin), a haircut, or even getting my hair color fixed to something I didn't even come in for. I don't know what happened to this place over the past 5 years. It used to be so great and would be able to come here with out any worry. I came here because my usual lady was booked out and needed a cut and color for a job interview. I was rushed in. I was assigned to the stylist Amanda (I think her name? Short black hair with fuchsia streak) since according to the woman I spoke to on the phone said her specialty was lightening super dark hair. I wanted my brown and blonde platinum streak hair to become a honey brown color. I wanted my hair to become styled/texturized in a certain way. I even brought in pictures. She ended up foiling my hair twice, and used this toner that made my hair look like a puke colored blonde. My platinum blonde streaks were left purple because of the toner that was applied before this session. I cried as I was charged for the color and foil ($120 for something I didn't even like), but got the cut for 'free'. I can't even believe they 1) Charge a customer for a poorly done job 2) Let a customer leave the salon looking like the way I did. To top it off, the stylist next to mine was talking about what kind of recreational activities loudly he does with his client. Highly unprofessional. I don't care to know these things. The 'organic' lotion for hair, the 'free' color and cut does not make up for the $120 I threw away. Also, when I came back in to get my hair fixed the hairstylist was acting awkward and rude at times, even after I pity tipped her $10 after the crappy service I received. Stylists: If you think what a customer wants is difficult say something. Ask during the session if things are looking good or perhaps ask if the client knows what their usual hair person does. Lesson Learned: I should only see my usual hair lady. Never coming here again. Also I didn't get the job I interviewed for. TL;DR: Spent $120 to get a cut and color for a job interview. The service was horrible, they tried to make it up by giving me lotion, not charging me for the cut and a 'free color' to fix the problem. I was still charged $120 for the foil and tone. Never got the color I wanted. I spent that much money to feel regret. I could have just spent that much at a casino and felt the same way. read more

I've been a regular customer here for quite a while now, & I'm very pleased with my stylist. She is a miracle worker w/blending! I've come in there barely able to put what I want into words, and she still did a great job, Other times, I had a picture, which she mimicked well. Most of my stuff has been on the conservative side, but I have a feeling she would do great at the fringe stuff too. She has an intuitive aptitude that can't always be taught IMO. She also seems up to date on all the latest trends. My boyfriend also goes in there, gets haircuts & is happy w/her service. My only complaint is abt my most recent visit. U have 2 be super clear about what ur getting b4 u get it. How much extra will a trim cost? What is the difference btwn partial & full foil? This may sound obvious & simple, but not always. For example, I've been going there a long time- I usually go w/my BF at the same time- & I always get a partial foil while he gets a haircut. But the last time I was there I called in & just said "foil." Only I was getting my hair done. I shlda specified "partial foil" or "full foil-But I've called in the past & still gotten a partial foil despite just saying foil; Yep, I shoulda been more specific, but ok, they didnt ask, & I forgot the diff. My hairdresser knows me quite well & I've never gotten a full foil with her b4. Anyway, becuz I wasn't more specific I ended up w/the full foil,& was soo not ready 4 a bill of $130 instead of $90 (a bad month for extras.) My bf was super pissed afterwards. He'd pointed out "um, why do u have way more foil on ur head than usual?" -& I was like "wha? I do? No I dont cuz it's whatever I always get, but OK I'll dble check!" Turned out it wasn't a partial. So make sure u ask or dble check w/ur hair stylist abt what ur getting, & the cost of any extras. To finish my story, the end job (full foil) did look good. & maybe it's a hairstylists job to push what will look better onto their client (altho I don't think that's my hairstylists style; I dont think she's pushy) I just wish that I hadn't been so obtuse about it & that somebody had checked. They TOTALLY could have mentioned b4hand "okay, so we're doing a full foil today for $130, is that correct?" & I clda said "wait wha? noo!!" I also didn't think I needed my entire hair to be dyed as I was mostly there for my roots to match the previous partial foil, & some lightening. They have the prices right up there on a blackboard, but, I find it can still be confusing. Yes, I was an idiot for not clarifying, and to make matters worse, while she was doing the hair job I was talking to her about balayage and ombre hair pricings, & doing a balayage in the future ($150), so I can understand why she might of presumed I was changing it up. (But somebody really shlda cleared it w/me.) I'm a musician/writer, & my bf is a mathematician, so spending over $130 in one outing is too much unless we've planned in advance, & we hadn't. Another example of this lack of clarity: my bf once got what we thought was a buzz cut. she used the buzzer thing but it was actually the price of a haircut since she had to do the top. I had brought in a picture, so, maybe that was it too? Anyway, after I asked why it wasn't the buzz cut price. she patiently explained, which was great, but again, we thought we'd be paying the price of a buzz instead of a haircut-($20 difference. Our mistake, so maybe we're just bad clients, but still, can't they clarify b4hand?) I need to be more careful & ask more questions B4 our hair is being worked on, like, ask 4 the total added up beforehand if we're so freaking poor. HOWEVER, they could stand to be more upfront! I mean, there's often a person at the desk. Maybe that person could be the one saying "hi, you're here for the 4 o clock slot for the blah blah ay X dollars?" so the hairdresser doesn't have 2 talk money. I mean my sister goes 2 Gene Juarez all the time. She gets a little menu beforehand & a check in beforehand.. They confirm again what she's getting; it's mentioned like 5 times, Even if u change ur mind, there's a menu to hold w/prices. Their prices are similar (tho actually, a full foil there's less- from 119 down) But I dont go 2 Gene Juarez becuz I am loyal 2 my hairstylist here, whose skills I appreciate, & I feel like I wouldnt fit in at GJ anyway. I just wish Scream was more upfront about what things cost. I realize this is in part due 2 our ignorance, but I write this down so ur smarter than me. Also, I feel they could have handled the foil misunderstanding w/way more poise. :( Since we thot we'd ordered a partial I don't think they shoulda charged us w/the full. Not cool!) On the plus side, my hairstylist Jordie is great. She is sweet, talented, versatile, & listens attentively.. I do recommend this place. Don't let my negative whinging turn u away. I moved to Philly about 3 years ago and I until the last month I would wait to get my haircut until I could go back to Scream in Seattle. All the stylist are funny, friendly, and very talented. I could just sit down in Heather's chair and say "I want fun rock n roll hair" and she will give me a great cut! I have gone to pretty much everyone who works there and I would trust any of those guys with my hair (until recently after 3 years, I found a salon in Philly that was as good as Scream). Also at Scream they have a cute little dog hanging around sometimes, and to me, it really shows a friendly and not stuck up atmosphere. I went to this shop last night because I needed to get my hair done before an event. I was dealing with a migraine but was pressed for time. And if you have ever had a migraine, you know the last place you want to be is in a bright barber shop with background noise. Given very little direction other than to clean it up (because I could barely communicate), Kaley did an amazing job trimming my hair. Her touch is very gentle, and she is just an absolute sweetheart. My hair also looks great- I'm super pleased with it. I've been in this shop before with other stylists, and I think that- like with any shop- how things turn out depends on who you see and how well you communicate. My entire appointment took 10 minutes. My stylist cut my hair dry, which is not what I'm used to but I've heard of its use for curly hair so I went with it. I asked for layers, and noticed that the stylist did not cross check her work at all. I'm not a professional, but I'm used to stylists taking their time and working deliberately when they layer my hair. At the end, she told me to just come back this week if I wanted more done. I met Nikki (after asking someone on the street where they got their super cute haircut), and within minutes was feeling like I found a great new stylist. Nikki assessed my last cut's flaws and did a proper (and fast) consultation with me before the scissors came out. She has great scissor skills and an easy manner about her. I liked her right away. I went in to get my mohawk back into shape because my husband didn't want to cut it for me out of fear he'd mess it up. I'm pretty content with the cut and service I had. The stylist didn't really introduce herself to me and we didn't have much of a conversation, which is okay because I'm not really much of a talker anyway. The stylists all seemed friendly enough and were having great conversations with their clients about pets and even sitting with them while they were waiting for their hair to bleach. Everyone seemed to know each other fairly well. I was in and out very quickly and I only waited a few minutes past my appointment time to see my stylist and she promptly apologized for my wait, which really, a few minutes is no big deal to me. I enjoyed the fact that they played music that I'm interested in as opposed to the usual popular garbage and the atmosphere was clean and interesting to look at. They also carry my favorite brand of hair dye, Special Effects! While this salon is more geared toward the alternative person, they do seem to do a lot of business for the more general public as well. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

Nikki, my regular stylist, was not working and I desperately needed a cut and color. I have a super demanding job and I don't live on the hill. It is hard for me to get to the hill and it had been 6 months since my last cut. I was paired with some older guy with curly hair and glasses. I am not sure what his name is, because he didn't introduce himself. I explained to him that I needed to trim my dead-ends, but was growing out my hair so I didn't want too much length taken off. I have a very asymetrical, edgy haircut that gradually gets longer towards the front. I also explained that I liked a lot of dramatic layering through the crown so that I could easily tease my hair and make it super piecey and big. I also explained to him that I wear clip-in extensions in my hair daily to add to the texture and volume. Unfortunately, I did not get the haircut I wanted. First of all, he cut my hair wet and ended up taking off waaaay too much length. He also barely put any volumizing layers through the crown. After the cut I basically had a weighted down, blunt cut with a few weak layers on top. My longest lengths are so short that they no longer blend with my extensions. It looks horrible and is very hard to style. I feel like this stylist either didn't listen to a word I said, didn't understand what I wanted, or was just too scared to cut my hair the way I asked. At one point, it also got very uncomfortable, because he randomly started telling me about the evolution of the lips and why they look like genitalia for a reason. I am not sure why he thought that was an appropriate topic of conversation??? No bueno. read more

I went to Scream on Capitol Hill in May because I was having sort of a down day and, well, getting my hair done is a tried and true cure for what ails me! I saw Kelly and got a haircut - I asked her about color - she recommended a few things and I made a follow up appointment for the next day. When I got to Scream she had pictures and colors waiting for me to look at - she spent time actually thinking about my hair, the (very vague) look that I was going for, and how she would implement it once we got down to business. Long story short - GREAT HAIR!!! (and a great price!) I have had so many compliments on my hair and color ever since Kelly first did it that I can't help but go back! I recently "found" Scream again after moving back to Seattle and started seeing Nikki again! She is AWESOME and Scream, generally, is great. First, I want to say that this is a salon for EVERYBODY. I have bobbed hair and normally have to have a fairly "professional" look. Nikki gives me a professional cut with a stylish edge. I love the compliments I get from co-workers and peers. Second, their prices are very very reasonable and I would be hard pressed to find the quality of services for the price. Third, they don't push products or services on you that you don't need. This is a personal pet peeve of mine when I go to the salon. Give me what I really need, not what you need to make a quota or a bonus. Finally, the vibe and feel of the salon is great - casual and fun. None of the stylists are judgy-snobby and I'm usually so entertained I never get to the magazine I intended to read. I love this place! They're fast and cheap, and my hair has always looked better after a cut here than at fancy salons that take 2x as long for 2x the price. They also almost always have made room for me as a drop-in. I only go in for trims, but it also seems super popular for more complicated hair styles/coloring. They do dry cuts (i.e. no shampooing) if you're just going in for a trim. While that was kind of strange for me the first time, I've grown to prefer it to the standard salon experience. First off, EVERY stylist at SCREAM is awesome - competent, good listeners, take requests well, and make every effort to please every client. It is honestly the ONLY salon I have EVER gone back to more than once and for over three years I've been completely loyal. That's really saying something. Yesterday I saw Kale. She worked on me for FOUR HOURS to achieve what I wanted, did so with expertise and care, was careful with my sensitive scalp, and remained patient, patient, patient! What a gem! I'd also like to add that as a former professional model, a lot of people worked on my hair in my teens/20-somethings and I rarely felt like I loved my hair. Well, I LOVE MY HAIR! I woke in the middle of the night and instead of shuddering at my reflection, went "Hey! Not so bad!". I woke up this morning with face cream on, puffy eyes, and bed head and saw my new hair and went "Wow! Holy ****!" OK, so I don't look lovely first thing in the morning, but at least my hair looks fab. Furthermore, this is a small, independent business with integrity. The former Owner was a Capitol Hill native who loved this place and when she left, she sold to one of her long time employees instead of a big corporation or stranger outside of the community. She probably could have done so for a ton of cash, especially considering the location, but she didn't. The new Owner is a wonderful, smart, well traveled, and modest young woman who kept her friends, i.e. the staff, employed and prices affordable. You're not going to find a salon with better services, better care, greater honesty, or more competitive charges. For those who were not happy with services rendered here I suggest Super Cuts or go ahead and spend $300 at Gene Juarez for a snotty stylist who will do the same quality of work, won't validate your $14 parking, and push you to buy a $120 bottle of glorified sodium lauryl sulfate. I have been going to Scream now for about 6 months. I was previously using Sensa Salon in Downtown Seattle, but was looking for a change. From my first appointment to my most recent I have been nothing but impressed with the ladies at this salon. Scream is a quirky salon with a punky interior decorated in bright colors and interesting art and other stuff. The large windows at the front bathe the whole place in lots of light which is really upbeat. The staff here though are what set Scream apart. I love coming in here because they embrace you like old friends. I originally was seeing a stylist, who has since moved on, named Nicole. She really helped me find and embrace a new hairstyle when my old one stopped working for me. I had fairly long hair I am very proud of and was always so nervous about changing it. However I went from long single length hair to a long bob and BANGS of all things. I feel so much more confident and in control of my hair now. Recently I have been seeing the owner, Nikki, who is also beyond amazing. She worked hard to help me get some great colors in my already processed hair. She explained what we could and could not due to maintain hair integrity and worked with me to find a compromise that I liked and wouldn't melt the hair off my scalp. Whoo! They are true experts in knowing how to work with heavily processed hair like mine which goes through dye jobs like men go through work socks. The other great part of Scream is scheduling with them is so easy and the prices are very affordable. I am blown away at what a great deal I get especially for the level of service provided at this small local salon. They have really won me over and I plan to return again and again. This review is based on getting standard guy haircuts. to clarify, this means I walk-in, and generally request (x) inches less hair in the front, and (y) inches in the back. Occasionally, I'll have another sentence or two of instruction or a picture to point at and say, "give me that." I rarely go for something fancy. Every time I've been, I've received the exact haircut I wanted or needed. Their stylists offer the perfect mix of giving you what you ask for, and offering up ideas to improve your look. Their stylists are also across the board personable, with easy barbershop conversation and banter provided during the experience. Walk-ins are a bit of a crap shoot as to how fast they can service you; I've been taken to a chair right away some days, and had long waits on others. But really, that's on my head for being a basic guy, and not calling ahead, as they indeed take reservations. Overall, I have only had positive experiences when subjecting my head to their capable blades. If you need somebody to shove sharp things at your noggin soon, I highly recommend Scream. read more

She is quick and efficient, solicits my input instead of just doing her own thing, and she is sassy and fun. Both times I have come away with stunningly gorgeous hair, exactly what I wanted. The shop doesn't normally stock the color I prefer (Pravana Chromasilks) but they happily ordered it in for me when I gave them advance notice. People. This is not your Supercuts, and not your Gene Juarez. If you're sensitive to frank talk, loud music, and unfiltered language, this may not be the place for you. Scream has a rock 'n roll, tattooed, punk, carefree kind of vibe. The stylists are have great character, and don't censor themselves for the customers--so be aware of that. The shop is fun, off-kilter and the stylists aren't pretentious and full of themselves. The prices are right on target, which is another example of the lack of pretentiousness. I can't tell you how many places I've been on Capital Hill where the stylists assume they know more about my head than I do. It's annoying. We don't get that here. I cannot recommend this place enough. I've been there three times now, with a different stylist every time and I've gotten a great cut every time. I decided to come here after going to Aveda in Capitol Hill and getting a girl who was totally confused on how to work with my side shave and how to make it into an asymmetrical. I kept having to explain it to her, she kept having to ask, and she just didn't get it. After that, I knew I needed a place that had hairstylist who knew how to work with and give edgy hair cuts. Scream was a godsend! I went to Jay first, and she was awesome. She just got what I wanted, still asked questions before she cut, and recommended great products for styling that were cheaper than the ones sold there. I've also been to Evan, who is hilarious and just tons of fun, and he also just got what I was talking about when I explained the cut. The other lady's name I didn't catch, but she was sweet, understood, and was meticulous with trimming up my hair. I will say that I haven't been pleased with the way they style my hair, but that is no reason to dock them a star. Each cut I've had turned out better than expected. I've been going to Jordi for about 6 months now, and I'd never want to switch! She's super friendly, and is great at both hair dye and hair cuts. Plus, the location is fantastic. There is easy access via buses, plus there always seems to be parking open nearby. It's located right in the heart of Capital Hill with lots of places to visit before/after your appointment. Pros: -Atmosphere is fun -All the hair stylists are really friendly -SUPER knowledgable when it comes to weird hair colors/dyes. -Cheap! You get great service for half the cost at other places. -The hair dye they use there isn't harsh on the hair and lasts a long time. -Great at any gender or unique hair styles. -Willing to fix any problems with the cut/dye! Cons: -The heating units seats are a bit run down. -They can take a really long time if the stylist is handling multiple clients at once. read more

Let me preface this by saying you get what you pay for. I came in for a simple trim/cut and since I was new to the area and unemployed I was looking for something CHEAP. $25 for a cut? DAMN, I definitely found a place that's easy on my wallet. The girl who cut my hair was a sweetheart. I didn't realize this is kind of a beginners/hair-training salon, so when she didn't wash my hair to start with (she did offer after I mentioned it) I was completely baffled and disappointed since I've never had a dry cut before. The cut itself I was pleasantly satisfied with. I thought for the price it was totally worth it, but now a month later it feels like I never even got a cut! I know this is a sign of a poor quality cut because 1. I usually get my hair cut every 3-4 months and in that time it holds up perfectly and 2. My hair only ever gets this limp/greasy/stringy when I REALLY cheap out and cut it myself. I have no training other than some lousy YouTube videos, so needless to say my hair is like crap after a few weeks of self-cutting. My fiance did go here and he likes it. He has shoulder length hair and a bit of an odd shaped head, so when he has to test out new places his cuts usually end disastrous (lesbian styles/Justin Bieber cuts/etc.) But the same girl who cut my hair did a pretty decent job on his. He'll probably be back, but I'd rather pony up an extra $30 or so for a more withstanding cut. read more

I went in to Scream with a super grown out full foil and mid-length hair grown to my shoulder blades with long, grown out layers (hello, pandemic hair). Throughout the pandemic, I had played with colors on the grown out foil to mask the sharp contrast of grow out that was now becoming brassy. Most recently, I had used Overtone's Ginger coloring conditioner, but stopped using it over a week before coming to Scream and I used a color stripping shampoo during that week to get as much of the pigment out as I could. I booked a cut and a foilyage. The cut turned out pretty well-- which is what saved this from being one star. However, the foilyage did not. For starters, the stylist suggested a balyage instead-- but still charged me for a foilyage despite ending an hour and a half earlier than my foilyage was booked for. I asked her to get me as blonde as she could. My natural color is a light brown and I had/have about four inches of my natural color that grew out over the last year and a half. The balyaged portion of my hair is barely a shade lighter than my natural color and after bleach and toner, my ends are still a mustard brown, not at all blonde. I wish the stylist had told me that she could not get me to a blonde shade today-- she did mention another session to get me "lighter", but I was definitely under the impression that I would be blonde today. She said it would be a honey color. If she had been more up front about this, I would have just gotten the cut. Instead, I paid $248.00 to leave with a slightly lighter shade of the same gingery hair color I came in with. I'm sure others have had better success, but for me, it wasn't at all worth it and I will not go back. read more

I have to preface this by saying I'm a guy with short hair and a really simple hair style. No color, average white guy style and I've only ever let Nicki cut it. That said, I've been going here for a couple years and I've never been disappointed. I just sit down in the chair and get my hair cut. Don't have to try to explain how I want it done (probably one of the most awkward conversations for most straight men). It's pretty cheap too. If you're uncomfortable around gay people, I'd suggest another spot. Also the conversation is pretty off the wall most of the time. None of this bothers me, but can be abrasive to the less open-minded. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the lack of massage chairs and Hiedi Klum asking, "Would you like a complimentary happy ending with your haircut today?". Update: They kick ass. On a lark I booked an appointment for a cut and color overhaul with Nigel and left with hair that exceeded my expectations! The whole staff seemed very friendly and professional and Nigel himself was a client's dream. Being that I was going in for a very drastic make over I was a bit on the apprehensive side, but he immediately put me at ease with his enthusiasm and confidence! On that day in particular I wasn't feeling very chatty and he did nit try to push conversation on me and still had a warm attiude which I appreciated immensely. And the color and cut? Fabulous. The color was even & brillant. The cut was stylish and extremely flattering! I will mist certainly be trusting my hair with Nigel in the future and be a repeat customer & positive advocate for the business as a whole. read more
