I dropped off my car to be detailed at a shop on Kawaiahao Street and was "killing" time before heading to Ward Theater to see a movie at noon. I walked through Ward Centre and the shops across the street looking for a place to have a small meal. My first two choices weren't open yet and I thought to myself, "Why not go to Scratch?" I hadn't been to Scratch since they moved out of Chinatown (a long time ago). I was seated near the rear of the restaurant and ordered coffee while perusing the menu. I vacillated between what I'd ordered before (shrimp and grits) and something new. I ended up choosing the waffle with a side of bacon. I asked my server to have the waffle extra crispy as I do not like a soggy waffle. My food arrived in short order ... My waffle came with whipped butter, blueberries and strawberries on top and a small container of maple syrup on the side. The bacon arrived in a separate metal tray. Unfortunately, the waffle wasn't as crispy as I'd hoped for ... The color was indicative of a crispy waffle, but it was normal. The reason I ask for an extra crispy waffle is that once you spread the butter and apply syrup, the waffle turns soggy quickly, like cereal once milk is added. It's a personal preference; I think the waffle would be fine for most diners. The bacon was fine ... Crisp but not overdone (which would have been fine with me). I enjoyed my meal and would return to try other dishes. Service was fine too.

A great date night experience! Food was delicious, flavorful and filling. We ordered: Lilikoi bbq ribs - 5/5! The meat was cooked to perfection! It was so tender and fell off the bone. Delicious is an understatement. Highly recommend! Cajun Mac n cheese with bacon - another 5/5! Came out in a skillet, hot and perfectly seasoned. Scratch burger - we asked for medium and got that! The double patty was juicy and I loved the chipotle aioli! Oh! And I can't forget about the rosemary garlic smashed potato fries. Yum! Service was quick! We went around 5 on a Sunday evening and sat down immediately -- there's outdoor tables and tons of seating inside with a view of the kitchen.
We came a bit before noon on a Friday (while on vacation) and although it was pretty busy, there were still a couple tables available. There was plenty of free parking in the shopping plaza parking structure. Our server was very friendly and helpful, although service in general seemed to be a bit slow. I had the Milk and cereal pancakes which were really good, it seemed like the milk they gave on the side was condensed milk which had a nice flavor. My husband had the Korean pulled pork sandwich (I believe it was one of the specials). He liked it but said the Gochujang flavor wasn't as strong as he expected. We also shared the Deep fried devil eggs which were super tasty, and made us wonder how exactly they deep fried the eggs. Overall we had a good brunch here (although some of the menu items seemed a bit pricey).
Wow! I'm extremely amazed by this restaurant. Came here for brunch with my girls and they recommended this restaurant. I loved the opening seating concept and being able to see them prepare your food. They also had outdoor seating. The servers were super attentive to all our needs and made sure we had a pleasant stay throughout our entire visit. I tried a little of everything since I like to eat off everyone's plate & try different dishes at a new restaurant. Everything was delicious and portions were good. I really can't wait to come here again but for their dinner menu instead.
Went on a Sunday for lunch. Was told the wait would be 45 minutes, but got a text message in 25 minutes that a table was ready I like that they had that system set up. It took a while for someone to come and take our order, but that was OK . What really bothered me was the marked difference in time that they brought the dishes out. I ordered shrimp po boy and my friend ordered the burger. I was surprised that they didn't ask how she wanted the burger cooked. When it did finally come it was well done. if you prefer your burger medium, make a point to ask about that. The Po Boy came out pretty fast. My friend's burger came out when I was almost done eating my meal. It's really awkward to only have one dish at the table. Do you wait for the other dish to come and let your food get cold or do you eat while the other person watches you eat? I suspect her burger was given to the table next to us. They were seated after we had placed our orders, but the lady got a burger before everyone else at her table and before my friend got her burger. I regret not ordering the milk and cereal pancakes and perhaps I ordered the wrong thing, but I was really disappointed in the Po Boy. There was so much bread that the filling was inadequate. Lettuce filled most of the bread. There was a stingy scattering of small pieces of battered and fried shrimp and pickled onions sitting atop the mound of lettuce. This is definitely a dish I would not order again. I was hungry again two hours later. I really hoped I would like this place. Maybe I'll try again but with a different dish.
Scratch was a lively and modern atmosphere with quick service. The chicken sandwich was flavorful and large. It needed a little extra sauce which I asked for on the side. The scratch Benedict with Kahlua pork needed some hot sauce which our server offered. I would recommend getting the yuzu lemonade, very refreshing! Keep in mind they include a 4% kitchen service fee and they need the whole party to be there before seating.
Food is prepared in front of you with the open kitchen concept and the stiffness really welcoming. Food came out looking great and taste dud not disappoint! Menu has a ton of stuff so we'll be back to try more.
cute spot in ward, easy & ample parking in south shore village. there's indoor and outdoor seating. we came on a thursday at around 10am and it was quiet, no line, but usually there's a wait. staff is friendly! we got the milk & cereal pancakes ($16) with fruity pebbles. they offered another choice of frosted flakes. huge portion, stack of four pancakes and topped with fresh fruits. the pancakes are thick but they're quite dry. the scratch benedict ($25) was so yummy. the english muffins they used were so yummy, not dry and biscuit-y. i also really like the avocado spread they put on the muffins. the eggs were cooked nicely, hollandaise sauce was also delicious. they used applewood smoked ham - it was thick, a bit on the saltier side, but good. i think the pricing was okay for a spot in ward, though the pancakes may be a little overpriced for what was offered.
Love this neighborhood gem serving delicious and unique food. Tasty escargot, Cajun garlic shrimp, bone marrow, lemonade, and save room for the milk n'cereal pancakes! They can make the pancakes for dinner time too, perfect for dessert. Friendly service and free parking.
Now that I'm a mom, I appreciate the availability of high chairs, foods toddlers can eat, and the speed at which food is delivered. This place had it all. I got the mushroom grits. Yum. The kidlets got garlic rice and scrambled eggs. Everyone was happy. Free easy parking too!
We just had a smashburger and a birria quesadilla, but what we really wanted were espresso martinis! Scratch's are some of the best! The perfect balance of two elements that we love!! We also shared a seared ahi salad which was alright this time around. Maybe my taste buds were off, but it didn't taste like the last time. We also had the waffle and mixed berries which was delicious! But again, the martinis are our favorite! Service was great! Always friendly and courteous, and they didn't mind how long we were there! Mahalo again Scratch!
Had a quick brunch at around 9:30, When we arrived there were a lot of seats available and we were able to get seated without a reservation. I initially tried to order the CRABK CAKE BENEDICT but was told they couldn't do it, second option was SCRATCH BENEDICT couldn't do that either so maybe they didn't have the hollandaise. I asked what was popular and the waitress suggested "SPICY SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN N' WAFFLE, BRULEE'D FRENCH TOAST or the CALENTADO" my friend and I decided to share so we got the chicken and waffles and calentado. We enjoyed both dishes, but I think the chicken and waffles would be the dish I would order again. The chicken wasn't oily and the waffle was good, the waffles were a little on the soft side but still cooked through.

If you need a cure for the itch of new and fun places to eat, the Scratch Kitchen in the place to be, plenty of parking in the building, but I would still suggest making reservations when you can I got their Scratch loco moco with the pork adobo, garlic rice, two eggs, and cherry tomato's The pork adobo was a nice twist since it still had that meatiness but also the additional tanginess that comes from adobo which paired well with the tomato's, but then back to the savory side with the rich eggs and garlic rice. I have been wanting to come to Scratch for a long time, and the last time I was able to make a trip, they were hosting a private event so I missed out once again. I was finally able to drop by yesterday and was pretty pleased with my experience. Scratch has an open kitchen concept design, which is very cool. You're able to see and smell the food being made and makes the ambiance of the restaurant feel cheerful in a way. The server was very nice, I drink a lot of water and she kept it refilled the entire time. I am also very indecisive, and she was able to be patient and help me decide on the cajun shrimp (vs lilikoi ribs). I wasn't super hungry but I wasn't fully either so I wanted something semi filling. The shrimp was is a pretty small dish (($17) for such a small amount) so maybe I should've ordered a side with it, maybe some carbs to soak up the delicious sauce in the pan. My friend got the french toast ($16) and it was delicious as well, a little sweeter than my liking if I was eating the entire thing. Both dishes were fragrant and beautifully presented. I will definitely be coming back to try more of their dishes. read more
We had an early Christmas lunch gathering at my house. I told the kiddies' mom if she ordered what they'd eat and pick up the order I'd foot the bill. Last minute she decided to order food from here rather than Hawaiian food since she said it was yummy. We had pancakes topped with colorful cereal, French toast, pork belly noodles, brussel sprouts, steak bites, Gandule rice, salad with mandarin oranges and Mac and cheese. Did I miss anything else? I liked the steak bites and salad the most. We had quite a bit of left overs enough for dinner and another meal the following day. They didn't want to take home any leftovers. The food was nicely packed for pick up. By the time it reached our home it had cooled off but no one zapped their plate to raise the food temp. The kiddies barely put any food on their plates. Scratch Kitchen never disappoints! This is my 5th time here while on vacation, and I always find myself coming back for the Adobo Loco Moco, Chicken and Waffles, and the must-try Cream Brûlée French Toast. Every dish is packed with flavor and the service is always amazing. Just a heads up -- it gets packed on weekends and they don't take reservations, so I'd definitely suggest coming early. Can't wait to come back again! read more
I absolutely didn't anticipate eating on a Monday while doing this review. Guess I had to make the exception. Where do I start? Scratch Kitchen...I heard about this place, but I can't recall ever eating there. In terms of the area, I'd say the view looked really nice. From top to bottom, I went in with an open mindset, and ended it with the place definitely exceeding my expectations. I ordered their Chicken and Waffles, which, presentation-wise, I liked the look of it. Not so sure about the greens on the top, but it was more for visual. Getting into the good stuff, I really liked what I ate. Of all the times I've eaten fried chicken, Scratch's was the most crispiest I've eaten. The waffle, I would have liked it to be a bit more texture, but because of how crunchy the fried chicken coating was, I actually didn't mind it as much. I think it was their spicy version, which...I didn't quite taste much of the spice other than seeing the very thin pieces of the red jalapeños, but conceptually, it was a really good plate of food visually. I'll probably come back there again if in the event I'm interested in wanting to try something else that's kind of "out there". read more
I haven't been to Scratch Kitchen since they relocated to Ward from Downtown. I went with my family to try their brunch over the weekend. They do not accept reservations for brunch so it is first come first serve. We visited at 11:00am and there were a few tables and the counter seats available but the hostess stated that it's a 45 minutes wait. We think they were understaffed so we accepted and I gave my phone number to let us know when our table was ready. We walked around the Ward area for 20 minutes until I received a text that our table was ready. Crispy Brussels: The Brussel sprouts were good. They were crispy and tasty with a bit of Parmesan cheese on top. Marsala Roasted Shrooms Grits: The dish was good. The grits were delicious and the mushrooms were flavorful. Pinky Pasta: I love mentaiko anything. This dish was one of the best mentaiko pasta I've tried. It was delicious with a good amount of mentaiko sauce. Super flavorful and savory. I'm not crazy about the white fish on top, it wasn't seasoned much and tasted plain. The mushrooms in the dish were buttoned mushrooms which were not bad but I do prefer shimeji mushrooms for mentaiko pasta. Overall, a very good brunch place. Service was quick and friendly. Their dishes were tasty and with good portion size. I remembered when they were in downtown their menu would change seasonally, but it's been consistent for a while with a couple changes. read more

3.5 Stars. Better than last time so was here. Service was better but not that great. They brought a plastic cup of water for the baby which is really appreciated but no refill on water and it took a long time to get the check. All in all average service. The food is ok. For the area prices are ok. Portion size is probably average. $16 for three slices of French toast seems a bit steep. The Chilaquiles needed more chicken and cheese but the taste was good. Ambience is nice. Waiters aren't all that friendly. I'd consider coming back. read more

Enjoyable brunch! I ordered braised pork belly Benny. This was delicious! I would recommend! The poached eggs were perfect. My friend ordered chicken and waffles with a side of gandule rice. She enjoyed the rice and the chicken and waffles. The chicken had some pickled onions, which was a nice touch. Staff are really nice and helpful. You can make reservations online. But we walked in that day and there wasn't a wait. We went on a weekday. Easy parking. There's a parking structure. Scratch is right next to core power at Ward. Scratch also opened a new location in Hawaii Kai in 2023. read more

Great food selection, and a good selection of vegetarian options, too. It was busy when we arrived after 12:00 from shopping at Ward Center and only had to wait less than 10 minutes. We were seated at a table that overlooked the kitchen so we were able to see the cooks at work. My friend has never been here before but the first thing that stood out to her was the freshly made lemonade, which she bought. It was delicious, with just the right amount of sweet and sour. My friend had the pork ribs, which were really meaty but needed more sauce. I had the Pretty Boy Wrap (yummy) without extras. Choose salt & vinegar french fries to go with it. If you love salt & vinegar anything, try these! My friend tried one, loved it and had her order changed to include some. Unfortunately, the ribs were put under a warmer while the fries were prepared so they were a bit dry and there was no sauce. She asked for sauce on the side and it made a big difference, even with the baked beans that were part of her meal. Kudos to Rachel, our server, who made our whole experience that much better. read more
Checked this place out for dinner one night and we were pleasantly surprised to be seated quickly without a wait. Service was fast and friendly. Everything we ordered was spectacular! Food was fresh and flavorful. They were also running a special for a $20 gift card if your bill hits $100! All the dishes are so tasty that you'll order more than enough to reach that goal lol. Came here on a Sunday with my hubby as we were in Ward Village. We knew it would be busy as it was a Sunday and is a popular brunch destination. I checked in with the staff at the counter and said that we would like a table for two. He took down my cell phone number and said we would receive a text when our table was ready. He said the wait would be 30 minutes or sooner. I looked around and I saw empty tables. They did not have enough servers. I also realized that this person was also serving tables. So we actually ended up waiting for 45 minutes, and I never received a text. I had to go up and inquire at the counter once again. We found out that our table was ready but no one informed us. The staff apologized for the wait. On a busy Sunday you should have your A game on and if you are short staffed, you should relay that to your patrons. As far as the food goes, we ordered the chicken and waffles to share. My hubby had the braised pork belly eggs Benedict and I had the chicken chilaquiles. The chicken and waffles were just ok, I thought it would taste better, it was simple and they topped it with greens and red onions which made the chicken soggy. We just pushed it off. The chicken also seemed overcooked. Chicken chilaquiles-I loved my dish. The portion was quite large so it can definitely be shared. The chicken had a nice taste, very flavorful with the sauce, it wasn't dry at all. The scrambled egg on top was tasty and fluffy. I have no complaints with this dish. The first thing I noticed about my hubby's eggs Benedict was that the eggs were small. Usually you see a larger poached egg on an eggs Benedict. He said it was just ok. I've been here before and had a much better experience. Something to take note of is that on top of your bill they charge a service fee which is additional to your tip. Our bill came to $83.00 which is pretty steep for brunch and we didn't order any drinks. Lastly, I had to run to the bathroom and did not have a good experience right after I ate my food. read more
The food was a bit pricey, but you were given a pretty decent size portion for the price you pay. I would recommend bringing a jacket because the restaurant has an open kitchen that allows you to watch the chefs as they prepare your meal, but they crank up the AC which makes the restaurant cold. We came here around 7pm during the week, so it was half empty, which allowed their servers to focus on everyone. They had three servers who shared responsibilities for all of the tables. read more
I hadn't originally planned to eat here, but the restaurant in the area we decided on was closed, so this was our backup. The service was extremely fast and the food was hot so it was definitely fresh and not sitting around waiting for someone to order. I got the popcorn chicken, which I thought was for kids and would be a small portion size, but it was huge! Also ordered some smashed potatoes, which I thought was going to be more like mashed potatoes but they were small potatoes smashed with your choice of a seasoning. Food was fine, not exceptional or a must eat place but cute vibes and good service so no complaints here! read more

This is a great family spot, while we visited on a Saturday we were very surprised it wasn't super busy. We went at the right time! We decided to order some appetizers which was enough for 3! Food: Scratch Chili fries 5/5 this dish was delicious, the chili was delicious I loved that it was not salty! Bacon Mac and cheese 4/5 for my preference wish it had more bacon. Street tacos 4/5 Not bad in taste but a lot of meat for small tacos. Steak bites 4/5 tasty just needs to be cooked medium if you want it to be juicer we ordered medium well. Service: 5/5 Isabel who was our server was very attentive and friendly. She recommended some great dishes and drinks! Will definitely come back. Parking can be a little tricky if you are not familiar with the area but we found parking around the corner. read more
Came for breakfast on a Friday with my husband. It wasn't very busy, got a table right away. Ordered a Lychee martini & guava picker for our cocktails. One of the best lychee martinis I've ever had. Perfectly balanced cocktail. Guava picker was good as well but the martini was everything. For our entrees my husband and I split the brulee'd french toast and the beef loco moco. French toast was delicious. Didn't need the syrup, it was sweet enough and moist enough without it. The beef on the loco moco wasn't seasoned too well. Didn't have much flavor but the gravy saved the day. Packed with flavor. Service was friendly and prompt. Would absolutely come back next time I'm in the area. read more

I have eaten at scratch probably 100+times and for good reason . I had a slight obsession with the shrimp and grits then it turned into the chicken and waffles but today is the first time I ate dinner here ! I got the bbq ribs which came with baked beans corn , slaw and corn bread and it was so good ! We actually started the meal with the deep fried deviled eggs ,popcorn chicken and the Cajun bacon Mac n cheese which my kids couldn't stop eating also had the ceasar salad with grilled chicken , the burger and fries and ended the night with that brule French toast and I'm so angry that I haven't been eating dinner here sooner. I can say that my service was also amazing the girls were so sweet and patient with my kids . This is by far my favorite restaurant ! Maybe we ordered a lot but to be truthful not an ounce went to waste took a yuzu lemonade to go and i am one happy person. read more

The last time I dined in at Scratch was two years ago, I liked it but didn't love it. After our original dinner plans fell through, we found ourselves here on a Saturday night around 6 pm. With no reservation, we were very lucky to get a table for two immediately. Service was great. The vibe and lighting is great for date night. I ordered Tang Dynasty's Yuzu Refresher because I love Yuzu anything. The drink was definitely refreshing with a hint of sweetness. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered a second one. Food. The food was DELICIOUS. We ordered the escargot to start and were very pleased with the garlic herb buttery goodness. I could have drank the butter, it was that good! I ordered the lamb and gandule rice and my friend ordered the cider braised pork belly and apple pasta. I was in LOVE with the lamb and rice. The lamb could have been cooked for a little less time BUT the flavor was definitely on point! My friend seemed to enjoy his dish. I tried the pasta and pork belly and while it was tasty, I was definitely more impressed with my lamb. I would love to come back and order it again or try the fish next time. read more
My husband and I previously came here for dinner and it was horrible. We decided to come again for brunch and it was so much better. They still have some things to work on but overall it was pretty good! We got the Brussel sprouts, apple bacon burger and chilaquiles. The chilaquiles was sooooo good! I don't have a bad thing to say about it. You can eat it as is or add the hot sauce they provide for some spice. I loved it. I highly, highly recommend it! The burger was just okay, it had actual apple slices on it and they were crunchy so my husband didn't like the combo. The brussel sprouts were very good as well! They don't come with any sauce which was strange and I wish it did but they were still yummy and I still recommend them! The staff was extremely attentive this time and very nice. The food came out extremely fast too so there was virtually no wait time! read more

12/12/23 Tuesday a little before 5. Service--friendly, made recommendations when asked Food Crispy Brussels--this was a recommended dish--crispy outside, tender inside. Yum! Lilkoi bbq pork ribs --tender Bone marrow--do not order--I like the Livestock Tavern version--like spreading butter . This one was like a piece of fat. And there was just one toast point--where's the rest of the toast to spread the marrow on. But it didn't matter because the marrow wasn't spreadable.--big pass on this dish. LiHing Lemonade--a bit sweet for my taste. I wanted it down. I think it would taste great with seltzer. Nice place to talk. It wasn't too noisy--at the same time it was a third filled. We went early a little before 5 on Tuesday. read more

Food had so much flavor! The wait staff was amazing. Very attentive and we never had empty drinks. Place was clean and nice inside. We had the smash burger, Cajun Mac and cheese, south shore clam chowder and kahlua pig street tacos! Yum all the way around. read more
Great great brunch/lunch spot. Although they are known for their pancakes, this French toast is amazing and highly recommend. The best surprise was the garlic rice, literally so delicious and light. Scratch is a pretty decent spot for brunch --especially if you like sweet brunches. My favorite dessert brunch is the Bruleed Toast! The first time we came, we waited over 1 hour for a table. Thankfully, the food was great. The Fried Chicken and Waffle was delish. The Calentado is a unique dish and very flavorful. Yuzu Lemonade was tasty. Overall a solid spot for brunch if you make reservations so you don't have to wait. Open kitchen concept so you can watch chefs work. Cons: They do charge an "kitchen appreciation" fee here. Wait times can be long without reservation. read more
Excellent service and food. We made a reservation but came early and was immediately seated. We ordered a few dishes. I had the gandule teppan with NY strip added. Let's start with the steak. It was perfectly cooked medium rare and had tons of flavor. The eggs cooked over easy and sat on top of some sautéed onions and garlic which gave it a great flavor. The rice was tasty and went well with the overall plate. Our server was very attentive and overheard that it was our anniversary dinner so she surprised us with the milk and cereal pancake! We really enjoyed our meal and will be back to try more dishes. read more

Easy parking at the Ward Shopping center - and it's FREE- so bonus. The restaurant itself is outside of Nordstrom Rack/TJ Maxx on the corner on the first floor. Inside is really cute - lots of wood- open floor plan. It's not too loud- you can have a conversation. We had a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. Our order for drinks and appetizers was taken immediately and came out in maybe 10 minutes. Entrees soon after. Fast service. For apps we had deep fried deviled eggs- which is why I chose the restaurant because those looked good. They were good- I wish the breading would have had a bit more spice or more pickle in the deviled part of the egg. My SIL had the mushroom soup- REALLY flavorful- really good. Came with a crostini to dip. We also had escargot- delicious- cooked well- really great garlic/butter sauce we kept all through dinner to keep dipping. Bone marrow - wasn't the best bone marrow I've had in my life but it was pretty good as well. For entrees we had Shrimp and grits - not traditional- not super spicy and the grits were more hominy than traditional grits. So not was expected- but still very tasty. Pinky pasta-'fish was fresh- sauce was flavorful. Pork belly and pasta- also really tasty- I wish there was a bit more blue cheese and that the egg was a bit runny so that it would mix with the sauce a little more. The pork belly was well cooked. It was delicious- I wish I would have cut the pork belly up and mixed it with the pasta and I wish the egg were more runny - I think that would have made it tastier. I had a Mango Drop for a drink-sweet- not too sweet- I would get it again. Overall it was a lovely dining experience and I would return. read more

One of our favorite places to have breakfast when we visit! We popped in a little after 9 and were immediately seated. The girls ordered their pancakes, my husband ordered the chilaquiles and I had the two farm fresh eggs with bacon and potatoes. Everything was cooked to perfection! The pancakes were fluffy and sweet, without being too sugary and the girls said we have to go back before we leave. Never check on us if we needed anything . Avoided eye contact when we needed them .Didnt care that we was waiting for ever for the bill and had to wait longer for them to come and take our card . Food wasn't good and the service was fake and slow . read more

Please update your website to notify customers that you are closed for remodeling! Opentable allowed us to make dinner reservations, only for us to show up and find the restaurant closed! And this is something that has happened to many other customers as indicated on the reviews on their opentable page. Thankfully, a restaurant in the area still had available tables, but I feel bad for all the other customers that weren't as fortunate. read more

Food is amazing here, loved everything!! From the moment we walked in we were instantly greeted. We ordered several plates and all came out in a timely matter. The pork adobo tacos and deviled eggs was so good, we also had chicken and waffles, French toast, and eggs Benedict! Everything was phenomenal. I love how clean and open the restaurant is. The only downfall was the exhaust fans weren't working so it was quite warm. All in all, 10/10 recommend!! read more

Scratch Kitchen is at Ward. South Shore Shopping Center (The Rack. TJ Max. Eden in Love. Etc.) You can Park in the parking garage behind restaurant for Free. Walk through Mall to get to the front of the Scratch Kitchen entrance street side.

From what I gather from their IG account (@scratch_wardhi) they are temporarily closed as of June 30 due to a family emergency. They said they would update on all of their social media outlets. That's all I know.

No. The dinner menu is like a Southern Table menu with delicious and well-plated dishes such as: Smoked salmon Deviled Eggs, pork loin w/smoked green chili mac n'cheese & collards, oyster roast w/chorizo & Creole red beans & rice.
