    tuna tataki
    Sarah S.

My family and I came here close to close on a slow Sunday. We were seated at the bar. I ordered the plum wine spritz and it was delicious; not too much of the tang that I find comes with most wines. My sister ordered a gin hibiscus drink that was complex in flavor yet still felt light. The space is small but cozy, and the subtle ocean theme is really nice. The service we received was exceptional. The cooks and bartender were very personable and answered our questions thoroughly and with ease. Since it was a slow day, the cook even prepared us an extra little dish (that was delicious by the way). The owner catches a lot of the fish they serve, so it is the freshest you will get in the valley. Their menu changes frequently, so some things you see online may not be available. We ordered several dishes to share: the smashed cucumbers, the tuna tataki, the inari nigiri, and the dry fried shiitake. You can tell the food is good because I forgot to take pictures before we started eating. The cucumbers were very flavorful and had the numbing heat associated with Szechuan cuisine. The tuna tataki had a perfect sear on it. The inari is hard to mess up but was still very good! The highlight dish for me was certainly the dry fried shiitake. It was very flavorful with some heat to it and tasted smoky as it was cooked with bacon. The rice portion was a good size so as not to drown out the mushrooms. We left full and happy. One thing to note- the spicy yellowtail roll is actually spicy, so if you can't handle your spice you should opt for something else. My family has lived in the valley for more than 20 years and my mom says this is the best restaurant in the valley right now. We will certainly be back and will be telling our friends about it.

Our friend introduced us to this place. I find it very hidden and cool spot to be. It seems like only local people hanging out there. This place is not that big, it has 2 separate sections which are bar and sit down table area. We got different cocktails from the menu, drinks were pretty good and not water down but the price was on the steep side for sure. The bartender definitely knew his stuff and made very tasty cocktails. We got some appetizers which were Hibachi, Tuna Tataki and scallop sushi rolls to snack on. The taste was ok good, except for scallop sushi rolls that we thought was way too pricey - 2 small pieces for $12 and we didn't taste much of scallops. We might go back for more cocktails when we are in the area again. Not so sure about food. Nice vibes and friendly staff though.

everything we ordered was exceptional! One of the best restaurants we have eaten at in some time. We ordered the Yellowtail tiradito, the escargot toast, the Miso-glazed halibut, and the pork shoulder, chocolate mousse cake, and sake. We wanted to lick our plates when we were finished! We definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

What a gem! I was so excited to find the perfect mix of cozy, ececlectic , and unexpected at Scrag & Roe. Nate, Jack and the whole team were a welcomed chat. They had reccomendations, humor and a knowledge of their craft. We enjoyed a few items : prawns, spicy cucs, tuna taki as my main, and pork belly as my husbands. All were delicious, but I must say the tuna was some of the most delicate and flavorful I have had in a while. My spicy Paloma was the perfect kick too It sounds like Nate has some great sushi events the pipeline and a patio that screams summer date . We will be regulars for sure.

The coconut curry with chicken was nice and not too spicy. I also tried the hibiscus lemonade which was a neat balance of flavors, but more on the tart side. Service was quick and I never felt like I waited too long for anything.

Is this place even open? Hours do not match up. Was excited to try it but we will see if they last the season.

The same large, beautiful windows are there, but the decor is warm, trendy, and modern. Our hostess immediately wished my husband and me happy anniversary and the bartender team Max and Woody were truly outstanding and made our celebration special. They are adept at making cocktails. We tried Blue Bingo and Inside Out. Both were perfectly balanced. The Blue Bingo with fresh blueberry puree, garnished with blueberry and mint was refreshing. The Inside Out was similar to an Old Fashioned. We selected 4 small plates, one large plate, and one side. For small plates, the striped bass collar was meaty and flavored with an herb sauce and punchy blistered cherry tomatoes. The little neck clams came in a broth that was worth sopping up with the grilled sourdough. It was similar to having mussels in a luscious wine butter sauce. I would have eaten like 12 of the clams if they let me but they alas only give you 6. My favorite was grilled Romano beans, slightly crunchy, fresh, and light, with burrata and fried green tomatoes. The breading on the tomatoes was perfectly light and crunchy. The burrata was delicious, and I would have preferred to have it over the barchetta, fresh ravioli like pastas that came with fennel and arugula. The barchetta was missing that creamy element. The served our pork schnitzel as a "splitzel" served cut in half on two plates. Again, it was perfectly crunchy and light. We ordered pomme puree (mashed potatoes) as a side too, creamy and delicious. They had a decent wine and beer selection. We lucked out with our chenin blanc selection, which paired well with everything we had. Eat here! The menu changes every day. We can't wait to come back.

I ordered the Something Fun cocktail, which was fruity, refreshing, and beautifully presented with blue salt speckled around the rim of the glass. For dinner, I had the whole trout in a dill sauce with a side of purple cauliflower. Everything is locally sourced, and while the menu features a few staples, it changes daily. Each menu is date-stamped, which I'm obsessed with--it's a great reminder of how fresh everything is. Vermont generally has a great local food scene, and I really appreciate the thoughtfulness behind the ingredients, presentation, and overall quality. Frankie's is a restaurant I'd highly recommend for groups, family dinners, date nights, or even corporate dinners. I'd love to come back and explore more of their wine selection. The staff is incredibly welcoming, happy to chat, and very knowledgeable about the menu. Expect to spend around $75 per person for a meal, a side or appetizer, and one drink.

Every bit of food was prepared just right. We did eat a pineapple salad that was so fresh and crisp and not overly dressed, which was on the Specials menu. I also ate the Halibut for my main course, which was also on the Specials menu. This was nicely done as well. My wife ate the pork tenderloin, from the regular menu, and it was delicious. The coup de grâce was the dessert. The ice cream of the day, which was an maple gingersnap flavor was outstanding, and carrot cake was hands down the best I have had in my life! The service was good, fast and efficient. If you are looking for a very good, but not inexpensive meal, we would absolutely recommend Harrison's.

Con - none of the 4 of us even liked our meals - they were inedible. We descended the narrow steep staircase into the dark dining room; outdoor seating was not open. The waitress promptly brought us menus and waters. There was a good variety of wines and we settled on the Sancerre. Charging for bread is not a good trend so $10 for 4 Parker House Rolls was disappointing. We also ordered the mussels and asiago fries. The chef seems to favor creamy white wine sauces - the added cream adds a heavy taste without adding flavor. The shrimp & sausage on mushroom ravioli had the cream sauce and cubes of sausage. The pasta primavera also had the cream sauce. It was super bland. We added chicken (see the photo of the chicken breast added to the top side of the dish not cooked in the dish). The salmon and its corresponding carrots were spiced with bebere which is very mild but not particularly enjoyable. And finally, the grilled rib-eye was bad, really bad. It was gelatinous and the worst steak we've ever had. I've only ever seen a steak cooked like this when it's cooked at too low a heat. We fed the leftover steak, chicken, and salmon to the dog.

When you measure Maple Soul against restaurants in Vermont, it is a three star restaurant. If you measure it against restaurants in New York City it might be closed. If you measure it against restaurants in Rochester Vermont...it's a five stars because it's the only restaurant in the valley. After many visits to Maple Soul I can tell you that you must request the Chef not put in fistful of garlic into any of his recipes. He loves garlic and it stays with you for days, not a few hours. I'm serious absolutely days and days. I tell you this not to hurt The Restaurant, or hurt the Chef!!, but to request that he not do that for any of your dishes. Especially the Caesar salad! A great Chef!! offers you a hint of many flavors. It doesn't quite happen here. He seems to choose one taste and allow it to overpower the entire dish. I can tell you that the ribs are very good, the mac & cheese is very good and the goat cheese salad, delicious although way too big... unless you want to make an entire meal out of your goat cheese and beet salad. It's just too big. The Restaurant could save money. Less is more. I'm always wary of a restaurant that serves TGIF size portions. My chicken marsala could've definitely served 2 people as an example. Possibly a half a box of pasta? Do I recommend you go. Absolutely it's a delightful experience. Just don't expect a five star experience like most of the reviews report. If you've got no other choices, this is a five star restaurant. That's why there are so many five star reviews. Why do we continue to go? Because there are no other choices! So, be willing to drive about an hour to an hour and a half to other restaurants if you are visiting Rochester or the White River Valley if you want an absolutely excellent meal.
