This is our second time eating here and the food is sooooo good!!! My husband had the Shrimp Alfredo and I had the Linguine du Scola (chicken parm, sausages, meatballs and linguine). The portions were huge! I have enough leftovers for both of us. The only downside is the service. Each time we were here it took forever for our waitress to take our order. This past visit we didn't have settings or plates for our bread and it took asking our waitress twice to receive them. She didn't come back after we got our food until we were finished. It wasn't that busy so I don't know why she never came back. We want to go back but with slow service it's debatable. read more

Not as good as it used to be. The recipes have changed as the owners have changed. The Ravioli Rosa used to be my favorite dish but something is different. The sauce is different. The lobster seemed tough and slightly chewy. The calamari we ordered was too breaded. For the money we spent we were not satisfied. This used to be my favorite local restaurant. Asked for haddock Gorgonzola for lunch. Great description of it in the menu. I asked to have pasta on my side and waitress said it would come with the haddock Gorgonzola sauce. Finally came, it looked good and had aroma but there was not sauce on pasta. When asked for sauce, waitress said it would be extra charge. My expression was like what? Immediate decide to paid extra $3 for something it makes food taste as supposed to be. Waitress came with sauce and blame responsibility for me not asking initially for extra sauce to avoid charge. My eyes again strained and understood it's not the customer responsibility to make a dish taste an appear right as description. Waitress didn't follow up on dish or any need I might have. Ordered: Prime Rib, Steak tips, mashed potatoes and sweet mashed potatoes. Drinks: if you're looking for beer, they only have bottled with nothing on tap. Good wine selection. Food: Fresh Scala bread served with refrigerated packs of butter to start. Be sure to warm the butter with your hands before spreading since it will tear your bread. Salad was a simple garden with oil and vinegar dressing. Nothing fancy but fresh. Grade: B+ Prime Rib was delivered in a tasty au jus sauce that was flavorful at a generous cut for the price. Ordered medium rare and was a bit overcooked, but didn't take away from the flavor. However it did take the tender out of the meat, with parts being difficult to cut / chew which was a bit disappointing. Ended up only eating half of the portion as the rest was equivalent to chewing gum. The lady's Steak tips were ordered medium and were bland and nothing special. Asked for A1 sauce and with the sides made it good fair. Sides were good with mashed potatoes being hearty and flavorful. The sweet mashed potatoes were also delicious which balanced out the main entree's shortcomings. Grade: B Atmosphere was ambient for an Italian restaurant with old crooners playing through the speakers. Godfather posters line the bathroom walls and the place was a full house for a Saturday night. The kitchen had some difficulties with light smoke filling the dinning area, but didn't take away from our experience. Service was attentive and our waitress was personable with a great attitude. The new owner stopped by the table to mingle for a bit and check on our experience which was nice. Grade: A TLDR: Experience was good with your average Italian. Definitely worth a try if you've never been here and if you live close by, this might become your regular spot for a nice dinner. read more

The salad and bread could be a meal in itself because it's so hard to stop eating. I actually enjoy all the sauces which is rare. Red, Alfredo and Marsala are very flavorful. This was the most horrible meal I've had in a long time. I ordered the fisherman's platter, broiled. It was baked and very dry. Two lousy, tough shrimp, a few dried out scallops and a piece of haddock with no seasoning. The baked potato was just thrown in the container, with no butter or sour cream. I had to take a stomach pill. $20 down the drain; I gave most of the 'meal' to the stray cats outside. I hadn't been to Scola's in years and will never go back. They need a class in basic cooking. Went to Scola's tonight and had great service and a great meal. We had some friends visiting from Maryland and wanted to take them out for some seafood. I had not been to Scola's for a long time and wanted to give it another try. So glad I did. We each ordered something different. I got the salmon, my husband ordered the Lobster pie with baked potato. He said it was very good but had no tail meat, mostly claw. Our friends had stuffed shrimp and the haddock gargonzola. One got the clam chowder and said it was excellent! All of our food was excellent. We thought the salads we're a little small but they were plenty. Our server was great too. She was very quick with everything. We finished by splitting the Apple crisp and coffee. Brenda, the new owner came by and talked to us. Her and her husband have been he new owners for a year and a half. We will be back. For some Italian next time. read more

This is by far one the best Italian restaurants I've ever been to around this area. The food that they serve has very little American influence, meaning that you shouldn't expect just your typical entrees like spaghetti/meatballs, chicken Alfredo, garlic bread, let alone cheap sauces like marinara or Alfredo. No! From being there at least 3X, the food they serve seems to represent true, authentic food that's originally based off of its homeland Italia! Even the menu reflects this by how the names aren't easily pronounced in English LOL. My favorite dishes are usually the seafood-based dinners come from the "Signature Entrees." Including HADDOCK GORGONZOLA, LINGUINI WITH CLAM SAUCE , and FRUTTI DI MARI! Oh and you definitely get you full $'s worth just by how enormous their portion sizes are. You can easily make at least 2 meals for most main dishes. Breakdown: Pros: Real authentic Italian Food, great service, tranquil atmosphere, kind waiters/waitresses Cons: Nothing except for other people who complain about this place all because they can't find their typical Americanized servings in the menu LOL. What happened to Scola's! My husband and I were in the area on Sunday and decided to frequent Scola's. We had been there many, many times in the past and always liked the place. It had been a year since we had been there and everything changed. I could see and feel the cold, hard difference from the outside to the inside and more as we were seated in the bar lounge and not the dining room. The ambiance was totally gone and replaced with very bright lights and really loud XM radio "noise". The curtains were gone, the Sunday specials we liked were gone, the candles on the tables were gone, the place was dirty and the staff was unfriendly. There was food on the floor, no forks on the tables and no customers. I was in shock! I began wondering about the food. The waitress was unaware of the entree I ordered even though it was prominent on the 'new' special menu. My chicken and eggplant parmesan arrived smothered to death with burned sauce that separated and left a watery mess all over the bottom of my plate. I couldn't eat it without having to dry clean my clothing. The linguini was reheated and so was the entire dish. There was nothing fresh or authentic as I had expected and had happily received in the past. Even after sending my dish back to try to make it edible it was returned in the same state. Now I knew why my onion soup was lukewarm, with undercooked onions, way too much overseasoned bread and some unmelted cheese thrown on top. I'm glad I didn't get a salad. I tried to eat the food but was unable. The waitress put my meal in a take home box (I have no idea why) and offered us a free dessert. Why would we want more bad food? I asked to speak to the owner. I was told by the waitress that he wasn't there. She did not even feign the slightest interest. I pressed on for a manager. I wanted to save my Scola's, but no one cared. The manager arrived at our table, briefly listened to us and then rebutted every single item that was mentioned, making the experience even worse. I don't enjoy writing a negative review like this, but if I can help someone else from wasting $75 like I did from going to this restaurant I feel it's necessary. My wife and I had been to Scola's many times, but we hadn't been in about 10 years. We went a couple of weeks ago and there is no describing how bad the food was. My wife got swordfish and linguini. They must have put 2 pounds of pasta on her plate and a small little piece of fish. The fish had a "very" fishy smell to it like it was several days past when it should have been cooked and served. The linguini clearly was not freshly cooked. It obviously had been pre-cooked and then reheated prior to being served. After one bite and a lot of time doing the smell test on the swordfish my wife didn't touch another thing on her plate. I got a dish with pasta and marinara sauce with a breaded chicken cutlet. My pasta was also not freshly cooked. The sauce had the look and taste like it had been cooked several days ahead of time, had been sitting in a refrigerator, and then simply reheated. I am not exaggerating when I say that I had a hard time cutting the chicken with a knife it was so tough. After two bites I realized it was completely inedible. But it doesn't end with the entries. We both got salads that were terrible. They obviously had been made way before they were put on a plate and served to our table as the lettuce was turning brown and the vegetables were soggy instead of crisp. We also both got a glass of house merlot. We didn't ask the brand name they serve but it also was terrible. A cheap, cheap wine. Looking back, my wife and I really should have said something to the manager as we both left having barely eaten anything because the food was so bad....but we're just not like that. With there being so many good restaurants to spend your money at people should know this is NOT one of them. read more

My husband and I went to this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. The service was very slow. We ordered drinks and waited over 15 mins. before they arrived. My husband ordered the fisherman's platter and I ordered the Seafood Alfredo Pasta. His came with a salad and mine with french onion soup. His salad looked like something you would get prepackaged at a grocery store. My soup was very cold and mushy. My husband said his meal was ok, but bland. I requested that my meal not come with calamari as I do not like it. When the meal arrived it had calamari on it. I spent 10 mins. picking all the calamari off. The alfredo sauce was so soupy that you felt like you were eating the water that the pasta was boiled in. The seafood was overcooked and very chewy. Very disappointed and will not be going back anytime soon. I wish I could give half a star. By far the worse Italian food I have ever had. I should have requested to not be charged for the meal!! When Scola's opened 20 years ago, the food and personal service could not be beat. The original owner would come by and talk, remember you, even sometimes throw in an extra meatball just to be friendly. The quality and service have definitely gone down since then. I had a huge party here and spent a lot of $$ for the catering. Instead of offering to box up the huge amount of leftovers, they cleared everything. Noone came to get our drinks or bus the tables. I grew up in Dracut and for some reason, my parents like this restaraunt so on occasion, we go there. Each time I go there it gets worse and worse. We went there last month for my grandmothers memorial dinner with about 9 family members. First of all, we were the only other people in there aside from a family. It was the slowest service ever. But before I get to that part, let me start by saying that it was FREEZING in there. They told us when we asked if they could turn up the heat that they shut the heat off at night and it needed to warm up. After being there for approx 2 1/2 hours, it was still freezing. I couldn't feel my fingers and we all had to wear our coats. There were 2 staff members there that we could see but it was the slowest, worst service ever. she didn't come to our table after we were seated for about 20 min. Took another 15-20 min. after that to get our drinks. Then another 15 min. after that for bread to be brought to table and orders to be taken (so at least 1 hr after we arrived before they took our orders). Salads and soup (french onion) were just meh. I ordered shrimp scampi which was just ok, nothing great. We were all so hungry by the time we actually received our meals (about 1 1/2 hrs after we arrived) but their food is nothing to be desired. Sauces are heavy, food is kind of bland. Waitress never came to refill our drinks or waters. I will say that their 2 for $25 meal deals are a good deal but you get what you pay for here. I made it clear to my parents that I would never be returning. My mom even called the next day to complain and the owner was barely apologetic. It boggles my mind that restaraunt owners wouldn't try to gain your service back again by offering a gift certificate or something. They will not be getting our service again; that is for sure. read more

I give it a 2.5 Star... Decided to come back to give it another try with Groupon coupon they had. $25 for $50...The last experience was fair at best and was hoping for better outcome this time. Groupon coupon says you need to call to make a reservation which we did. Then when we walked up, there's a big sign written on a paper placemat that says you must tell your waiter if you have a Groupon coupon. Makes you feel like you are a criminal showing up with a coupon. How about the people that don't have a coupon? Do they feel ripped off? The highlight was the bread. Traditional Scali that supposedly is baked at their bakery that was noted on the menu. Things sort of went downhill from there. They had a pizza special and was told by the waiter they got a new brick oven pizza so we tried a small pizza. Burnt on bottom and doughy. Sauce is the marinar on the pasta. The meals were good. Pork chops and vinegar pepper were moist and tasty. Had the chicken and eggplant fortunado and it was good. Marinara sauce however tasted like tomato paste mixed with water and had a sweet taste of carrot that overwhelmed the sauce. Would I go back? If I had another Groupon coupon I may go back and try a non tomato sauce dish like marsala. I really wish I can find a non chain restaurant that serves good Italian food and wish Scola was that place but so far just doesn't measure up. read more

I've been plenty of times and have always enjoyed the food. Very large portions, so you'll be taking 1/2 home. Unfortunately, the last time we didn't get a chance to eat. Walked in and while we only waited 2-3 minutes to sit, I got a bad vibe. 3 or 4 people walked past and said they'd sit us in a minute, yet the place was not full. We sat for about 5 minutes when the busboy lit the candle and another 5 minutes without any service. I walked to the counter and was ignored by the wait staff facing the other way counting their tips, got frustrated and left. The place wasn't full and there were at least 4-5 waitresses. I cannot stand that. It might take 6 months before I try again. bummer. read more

I've been here twice and both times I really wasn't impressed. Third time may be a charm, but I'm not willing to risk it. As far as what the place looked like, it's too dark, which I didn't really mind because I could tell that it wasn't really clean. The carpet looks old, tables and chairs were sticky. Carbs ♥ Their menu is overwhelmingly and unnecessarily enormous. You can basically get any type of pasta in a 3 or 4 types of sauces with chicken steak or [bad] seafood, among other common Italian dishes. The Ravioli's are clearly frozen, and for a "family restaurant" I expected home made. The portions are enough for 3 or 4 adults, which is a little too excessive, to me. I had muscles/scallops/shrimp and linguine, once with a garlic white wine sauce, and the other with an alfredo type sauce. I was happy with the amount of seafood, but the first time, the muscles smelled and tasted AWFUL. The second time around I was too nervous to touch the muscles, so I ate the shrimp because I assumed they were already cooked and frozen. I haven't had dessert there. I was impressed with the bar's selection. I really wanted to like this place... a place close to home... sort of a go-to when I didn't want to cook. Instead, it's just another wanna-be Italian place. Better than it has been for a while. The seating, squished tables, and dark at best dining room have not changed, but the waitress we had was polite, prompt, experienced, and knowledgeable (unlike some of the under-trained and apathetic teenagers I've had as servers there in the past. The food was hot and tasted fabulous. The portions were ridiculously oversized (as per usual). The best part is that I am not sick from eating there, as I typically have been in the past. I wish I got the names of the employees. Last week I went here and I always come here. The food is always amazing, but the employees are not. I recently got foot surgery on both of my feet. I showed up in crutches and I asked for a booth because I was in pain and it's much more comfortable/more space for foot room. I was told there were none available but the whole left side had so many open. She saw I was injured and did not care one bit and she was also rude. I almost walked out. Also, when I first walked in there were two girls up at the front that starred at me and gave me weird looks because I was on crutches. They kept looking at my feet and giving me dirty looks. I used to be a hostess and if I saw someone who was injured I would've done everything in my power to make them as comfortable as possible. Plus service was very slow.
