    Beef on weck
    ellen m.

The beef was cooked to order and hand carved. Beet salad, German potato salad and potatoes pancakes are not to be missed. Closes at 8 though so need to go for an early dinner.

Are you kidding? That means your water bottle?

Been here a few times before when we visit Buffalo and even though it's overpriced, we've enjoyed it for the history and experience. That ended when we were in town for the Bills game. My wife and I ordered 2 sandwiches with 2 sides each. Polite waiter brought our order but the glasses were so small I wasn't able to mix my Crystal Light mix in my drink so I went to the car to get a water bottle. Old grumpy grandpa comes over and says I need to take my bottle back to my car because "we sell water here" and no outside drinks allowed. Are you serious? We're paying $55 for 2 sandwiches and sides and you're REALLY going to say that??? I pretty much told him NO way and call the cops if you want. He said "well you can just leave now". I told him I'll leave after we eat our sandwiches. You can charge me for a bottle of water if you want. (I wasn't paying for it anyway). Well, somebody must have talked some sense into the old guy since they didn't charge me for the water. That said, that grumpy old fart needs to retire before he ruins your business more than he is doing!!! NEVER going back and telling all our friends to STAY AWAY forever!!!!!

This is the place to be in buffalo. The best for roast beef on kummelweck!

I don't get back to Buffalo very often, but one of my first stops is always to Schwabls. It is still a very quaint and vintage place. Very small, but the service is always excellent. The beef is cooked perfect and the kummelweck rolls are also perfection. The waiter, his name was Sean, said that the soup of the day was liver soup, and there was also chili. I decided when in Rome. Let's try it out. He told us that the liver part was simply a meatball in a beef broth with some vegetables. I was a little skeptic but figured why not give it a try so Susie and I shared, and he gave us each one meatball. It was surprisingly delicious. One would expect the liver to have a gamey flavor, but it really did not. They were perfect and the broth was very flavorful with fresh vegetables. Everything is made fresh daily. I also had the pickled beets, one of my favorites as well as their German potato salad. Also scratch made. You can't be a good German potato salad. I wish I could duplicate it all.

This place was so yummy. Had a very local feel and I love the white dress uniforms the waitresses wear!! I even got to chatting with the women across from me. I stopped in here before my flight yesterday. The roast beef was delicious and the seasoning on the bread was delicious. I ordered a side of pickled beets as well. They were delicious on my sandwich!! As I walked in the carver was slicing the different cuts of meat at the counter behind me in the main dining room which was fun to see and smelled amazing. This was a great last stop during my time in Buffalo. There's only about 12 tables inside and a full bar. Very cozy place for lunch especially to get out of the cold!!

One of the best meals ever. Roast beef sandwich dipped in au jus sauce. Hungarian goulash/stew to die for. Only available in Saturday.

We had to come due to all the hype we had heard forever. Our waitress was good & our orders were done correctly. My husband had the Beef on Weck which he said was ok. I had a salad with beef & the salad was huge & good but the beef was tough. The appetizer of French fries with gravy & cheese was also huge but was excellent!! Alcoholic drinks were not very strong. We felt the prices were too high for what we got!

Went to Schwabl's on a cold, cold, snowy day in Buffalo. The beef open face sandwiches really warmed us up! We were the first ones there on a snow day and got served super fast! We had the open face roast beef with different sides- the German potato salad (loved it) mashed potatoes, and coleslaw. I love the pickled beets. The restaurant is def old school looking and fantastic!

Sometimes visiting restaurants can feel like you stepped back in time to another era. This is the case here you can feel it the moment you walk through the door. Once you sit down your eyes will be inevitably drawn to the small meat counter to watch the meat get sliced. The anticipation builds as you want for what's to come. This is one of the best Beef On Weck sandwiches I've tasted in my life. Horseradish is an amazing costar to this beast ! Old school places like this are Americas best treasures.

    Poutine Fries

Ordered 2 roast beef sandwich's and poutine fries. So disappointing the roast beef was flavorless and super chewy . The fries were terrible and had a few pieces of clumpy cheese on it . Waste of $55

First off, miss me with any of these reviews less than 4 stars!!! WOW. This place was perfect. Small, and simple but PERFECT. Walking in the ambiance was so cozy and inviting, like stepping back in time and in a good way! I got the beef on weck with a side of beets (oh my lord!!!) Now, it is a bit pricy, but I'd pay it over and over again. The service was kind enough and talkative when asked "what's good to check out in Buffalo" I wish I lived closer to make this a normal stop! Amazing! Must try!

Beef on Weck, potato pancakes, German potato salad, pickled beets
    Nicole C.

Simply amazing! We each had the Beef on Weck and potato pancakes. Definitely top 5 roast beef we've ever had. And the potato pancakes were excellent too. The staff was incredibly nice and attentive. Michelle made the experience incredible.

First off, I was greeted and found staff friendly and efficient! You have plenty of options for seating .. dining area, front bar, back bar, even an outdoor patio bar. Although it is dive bar-esque, it was nice and clean (let's be honest .. some dives have a stench and stickiness that can definitely ruin your appetite, no matter how much you may love them). They have a set up for bands to play, as one was playing while I was there for their 2 year anniversary (congrats!). What was nice is although I could hear the band (it was playing in the back and I was up front), it wasn't over whelming me. I have eaten places where, no matter where you sit, it's extremely loud, and I appreciated that you had a choice here. Now onto the food: The food should have been doomed to fail; my tastebuds were prepared to eat sweet, buttery, syrupy French toast with a mocktail at brunch elsewhere. But wasn't hyped about the menu because of this (which is not dog and pony's fault .. I had to work and didn't have time to research where else brunch was available). I settled on the umami smashburger by a suggestion of my waitress. Now once again, could have been doomed to fail as I'm not a French fry person and my favorite cheeseburger is one I make on my own. BUT WOW their food blew me away and made me forget all about my brunch let-down. The French fries were fantastic and had a great seasoning on them! The smashburger was great to the last bite .. and I was NOT expecting to finish it as it was a really nice portion (I ate lunch now 10 hours ago and didn't need to eat again it was so filling!) but it was so dang gone good I sure finished it! Smoked cheddar .. chimichuri aioli ... kimchi bacon jam .. oh ya that bacon jam was EVERYTHING!! Thank you to the staff at Dog and Pony for making my long drive worth while!

I ordered the smash burger, my husband ordered the turkey sandwich. After we were waiting for our food for over 25 minutes, the server came over and said that he was just informed they don't have the turkey because they had an issue with that freezer. Ok, so my husband ordered the cheese steak because he was super excited for the bahn mi roll. My smash burger was alright, but the bread they use for their burgers remind me of those cheap buns you get from TOPS that just fall apart. The worst part was that they forgot the dog sauce on my burger, so I asked for the sauce, and THEY CHARGED ME FOR ASKING FOR SAUCE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO ALREADY BE ON THE BURGER I ORDERED. My husband made sure to tell me after we already left because he knew I would have fought it and our already 1.5 hour long lunch date would have been longer waiting for the refund... He ordered the cheesesteak and the sandwich was so small, and the "bahn mi bun" wasn't even toasted which is a signature for bahn mi bread. He said the flavor was fine but nothing to rave about. The worst part, for me, were the French fries that came with both of our meals. They were soooo heavily peppered that they were inedible. We asked for ketchup to try to make them tolerable, and they gave us a pre-portioned small cup of ketchup... You serve french fries with most of your menu, why isn't there ketchup on the table?!? Overall, It was a nice place to have on senrca street which used to only have the blackthorn and franchescas, but I would not eat here again.

The craziest part about it is that Winfield's Pub is literally just 10 minutes from my House. A conveniently small place that packs big Bold Flavors. Like as you are driving down Ridge Road towards the main Lackawanna area. A place that if you want to enjoy, you'd have to park in front of it or park on the Side Streets of the neighborhood across from it and walk over. After trying out their Food at a Stillwater Farm Dinner consisting or Birria Tacos and Sausage stuffed Chicken Breast. To me that was a nice welcoming Card telling me to come right away instead of wasting more time ignoring the Place. You walk up 3 Steps and in you are greeted by the Owner's wife Sherryl, the Owner and the Head of Winfield's (Tab Daulton) is running the show making sure food gets pumped out of their Small Kitchen. While their son Thomas is at the Bar making Cocktails of the highest Quality with some of the most unique names that I've ever heard. My 1st visit was enjoying a Birthday Dinner with loved ones in the center of the Restaurant. While going over the menu, I had my 1st Cocktail called The Ghostwriter in a tall cylindrical glass that had Gin, Herbal Liqueur, Coconut, Lime, Lemongrass Syrup & Dill. Sweet and Herbaceous. Next up was some Fresh made Focaccia Bread studded with Rosemary, Garlic, Tomatoes and Zucchini that was so Warm and Flavorful like it just came right out the Oven. You know I like to drink Beer and cook with it too, I couldn't help but get myself a cup of their Beer Cheese soup with Bratwurst and Housemade Croutons. Every single Spoonful I took was Rich with a hint of Spicy heat at the end. Next up was a plate off Duck Confit Poutine with Goat Cheese (I opted for that instead of Cheese Curds). You might look at it and see a big globby mess but what I saw and what I ate was pure Gluttonous Heaven. French Fries, bits of Rich and Tender Duck Meat and mild and Tangy Cheese which equaled a comforting Bite. Next was another Cocktail I got called the Dirty Harry (named after one of Clint Eastwood's best-known roles). Another drink that hit hard consisting of Pineapple, Doctor Bird Rum, Boomsa Herbal Liquor and Banana Shrub Jam. While waiting for my main course, I tried some of Nathan's BBQ Pork Belly Burnt Ends. Who doesn't like tender Pieces of Meat with the outside bring Crispy while the Meat inside just melts away on your Tongue. For our Entrees, everyone enjoyed something different like Nathan and Brianna having Seared Chicken with Vegetables, Mike enjoying a Burger, Rick just getting a few Appetizers, Grandma Carol eating Fish Tacos, Jimmy and Kathy enjoying a Steak. While I got myself Seared Scallops over Sweet Corn Risotto with Tarragon. This looked to me and ate like a Summer Dish, why on earth was it on the Menu during close to Fall/Winter, I don't know. But I'll say this, I loved every bite, you get Sweetness from both the Seafood and the Corn with the Tarragon at the end giving it a light hit of Licorice. Thomas kindly gave me a Complimentary Drink while waiting for Dessert called the Legislation #2. It had Rye Whiskey, Dry Vermouth, Orange Cognac and Acidic Phosphate. While it had all those Ingredients, it was a simple looking Drink with a Jurassic sized Ice Cube in it. But I will say this, this drink packed one heck of a Potent Punch. To finish off the Meal, I got myself a big slice of Guinness Chocolate Cake. One of my favorite Beers has been Transformed into a Dessert. It had such a Deep chocolate Flavor with richness from the frosting packed in between each layer. I walked over and personally thank Tab and his Crew for the great Food that night. The only issue we had was waiting to get our Checks, but other than that everything went great. Another one to cross off my list, another restaurant that I will no longer Ignore. Winfield's better be ready for some more Visits from me in the Future. !!!

That said, I did not find it overly loud, just loud enough where you had to raise your voice slightly. Enough about that. Johnson's Landing has a Lenten fish fry special, $20 for a full fish fry with sides, and this includes one of their specialty beers. This is a good deal to get a craft beer included with your fish fry. I actually ordered it to go and enjoyed the beer while waiting for the fish to take out. It was a very solid fish dinner, the batter was crispy, not oily. The fish was fresh, all of the sides were good, even the rye bread was a nice hearty thick cut of rye. The mac salad featured tuna, which I do like. And the fries were hot and tasty. The fish itself was not huge but was big enough for us. Every component of the fish fry dinner was on point. The barmaid was efficient and friendly, I did not have to wait. My only complaint is that they do not list beer prices on their menu, which was fine this time since it was included with the meal, but would prevent me from enjoying a stop on the way home for a beer or two.
