Schouse is an absolute gem! We ordered takeout and were impressed with the experience end to end. First of all, I have to say, the person who answers the phone is a lovely patient soul who will walk you through any dishes you aren't sure about and recommend ones to try. I appreciated that! We got: - Scallion pancakes (crispy!! Even after spending some time in a take out container) - Mapo tofu (spicy and tingly Szechuan pepper with creamy soft tofu-- it's simple but perfect, definitely my favorite dish of the evening) - Cumin lamb (always a favorite, theirs is no exception) - Braised baby cabbage in broth (recommended by the woman on the phone, this was a delightful new dish for me...it tasted like a soup a mom would make you, comforting and savory) The portions were VERY generous. The mapo tofu could easily be shared. Love the variety on the menu and what they bring to the Princeton food-scene. TLDR: Szechuan food is delicious and these guys do a great job making it. College student here, pleasantly surprised to hear about this place when I got back on campus. I tried it out one day, accidentally getting pickup instead of delivery. The pork buns weren't crispy after the 20 min walk in the takeout container but the dough was still beautifully soft and the meat was juicy and flavorful. The fish was also great, could be more spicy according to my wack palate but it's great to have a restaurant nearby that can give me a taste of home! Do not eat here! We were just there this afternoon. The food was awful. We each took a bite of the 2 dishes we ordered and were disgusted. We ordered the chicken and broccoli to be safe. The chicken was old and rubbery. Maybe it was frozen too long or just sitting around. The sesame chicken was the same awful chicken pieces but with a glippy sweet/ sour sauce poured in top. Probably from a can or jar. We called the waiter over to tell him the food is not edible. He took the plates, dumped them in the garbage. Then i asked for the manager. Our server said he is the manager. He then brought our check. $40 for food we didn't eat. We paid and left. I feel sick! read more

This place was SO GOOD!! I was visiting from NYC and it's up to par with some of the Szechuan food I've had in the city! We got the fish in chili oil (9/10), mala dry pot (7.5/10 wish there were less cauliflower, more meat and dif veggies) and scallion pancakes (7.5/10 could have had more scallion flavor). They're pretty new and the waiters were so nice and fun to talk to. Worst Chinese food in the Princeton area. The spicy pork rib (蒜香骨) is more of a plate of bone shards. The twice-cooked pork (回锅肉) contains thrice as much as scallion than meat, which, as the name suggests, is supposed to be the main component, not the condiment. If the inflation has reached a level that this restaurant can't afford to make dishes that live up their names, it should reconsider its pricing strategy rather than serving third-rate food. read more

This review focuses on vegetarian options, I have been here twice and have thoroughly enjoyed the following wonderful, spicy vegan choices, including two that are not usually vegetarian in my experience: - mapo tofu (marked vegetarian on menu, no pork unlike traditional preparation; nice kick but not overbearing) - cucumber salad (refreshing appetizer; vinegary and with some kick) - Dan Dan noodles - not marked vegetarian on menu but they will kindly leave off the pork upon request - spicy but delicious - black fungus salad (another refreshing appetizer) - spicy fried tofu - sweet sticky rice dessert (sticky rice with nuts and dried fruit; light way to end the meal) The menu is filled with lost of other vegetarian dishes like stir fried greens and eggplant in garlic sauce that I will try next time. This food was amazing! I ordered from here mostly for the Spicy Sour Beef Soup, a dish I ordered religiously from another restaurant in South Jersey until it closed during the pandemic. I've missed it so much I even tried to make it myself with subpar results. The version from Schouse is FANTASTIC. The broth is perfectly yellow, deeply sour, and extremely spicy (I did ask for it extra spicy, and it was absolutely no joke). The fatty beef was melt in your mouth good. I also got hot and sour soup, which tasted a lot different than typical Chinese-American take out but was great. It was earthier and less sweet (maybe mushroom stock?) and addictive to eat. Other household members got lo mein with chicken and fried rice with shrimp. Again, neither tasted like other Chinese restaurants, both having lighter sauces and the lo mein having flat noodles, and both were great. Two big pros: 1) They followed special instructions to a T. My beef soup came with extra chiles when I asked for it extra spicy. The fried rice was automatically house combo meats, but the person who ordered it wanted just shrimp and no meat and that's exactly what came. 2) The portion sizes are HUGE. I got the large size of hot and sour soup thinking it was the difference between a small container and a large. Nope, it was TWO large containers, as was the normal size of the beef soup. There was only one table of customers when we were in, the waiter didn't show up until 20 minutes after we sit there and kept asking the bus boy whether we can start ordering .The same thing happened again when we waited for check. The food is mediocre. Some slices of double cooked pork belly are too thick, thus they tasted greasy without much flavor. The shredded pig ears is under cooked, hard to chew. Princeton is a college town and has many asian cuisines in the area, this is the one missing authentic flavor - Sichuan. Many places around Jersey claim Sichuan flavor by over salting, tons of sauce + hot oil. This place reminded me of the old Wu Liang Yi midtown NY. I ordered 5 dishes during first meal, only one made the photo take, rest... I was busy smelling and eating, and sweating my butt off. It was so good, I returned the next day with another group of friends. And history repeated itself, only one dish made the photo shoot ...The day after, I bought take out to bring back to Montclair. Hot oil is important but the fried mixture of peppers and spices are the soul of Sichuan spicy flavor. My favorite dishes are tofu beef and soup with enoki mushroom, spicy wonton, jelly fish, and stir fried kidney. I cant wait for my next visit home to try the beer beef soup. The lady Jang is super friendly and helpful. It is a must try if you can handle authentic northern Chinese spiciness. If I have to pick something for improvement ... I needed to add an item to reach the $15 delivery minimum but the lady on the phone was really nice and listed the available appetizers that I could add on. The delivery fee to my address (around 2 miles away) was $3-4. The food arrived within an hour. Jin Li Mapo Tofu (regular spicy): Good tofu to sauce ratio; delicious sauce, and adequately spicy. Came with white rice. Spicy chicken wings (6 pieces): Well-seasoned and tender, partly fried in a batter. Total price, including tax + tip + delivery, was $25-26. The delivery person dropped it off at the entrance to the building, and I got a phone call from the restaurant saying it was ready for pickup.
