Missed the mark for me. There was nothing to complain about in terms of flavor, but the portions are a lot smaller than other places, in particular the lunch special - the soup was tiny. The egg roll was saturated in oil (more so than one might expect). Service was slow, and when we arrived home, we discovered they had forgotten to include 1 of the 2 soups. Straightforward hole-in-the-wall Chinese take-out joint. What they lack in culinary flair is more than made up for with tasty menu stalwarts. Cheng's Kitchen on Route 31, Pennington, NJ, took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting anything more than a run of the mill Chinese takeout house with maybe a little space for those who prefer to eat when the food is right from the wok. They did look like most of the others, with standard fare, lunch specials and a side dining room, but where they stood apart was the quality of the meals themselves. I ordered General Tso's Chicken when I arrived around 3:10 PM. First, the owner had no problem honoring the lunch prices, despite my late entrance. Second, the meal was of a higher quality than found at such places. The chicken seemed fresher. The sauce was just prepared for me and had a very good taste. They even threw in a few Szechuan small red peppers to provide the extra heat I requested. The breading was thin, allowing for the texture of the bird, and full flavor of the deep red amber sauce to shine on the tongue. Sure, the fried rice was colored by the bouillon dye, but even that was surprisingly tasty and full of pork and veggies. Of course, the ubiquitous broccoli florets were mandatory, but fresh, a beautiful green, and more plentiful than found in almost any other shop I have visited. Too, they had eliminated egg rolls or soup as part of the package, but given how good the General was, I did not mind foregoing those accessories in favor of better primary ingredients. This is a very unfortunate review. I was a loyal customer for years. The food was great. The family that owned it was great. Recently it changed owners and has gone downhill Instead of the delicious dumplings, there are now pre-packaged pot stickers. The packaging that the food comes in is now similar to what you'd find at a cafeteria. And the food has really gone downhill. Very sad. Not sure why the new owners changed what wasn't broke. It took us years to find a place with good Chinese. When we finally went to Cheng's Kitchen on Rte 31 Pennington, we stopped looking. First of all, the owners are incredibly nice and accommodating. They know all their clientele and the local high schooler seniors love to get their take out. Their steamed dumplings are delicious, egg rolls are tasty, plenty to choose from, and have even made special requests. It's been way over 10 yrs as patrons for us and have yet to be disappointed. They don't really have a dining room, per say-take out is their thing. But if you just want to sit for a bit, you can. My work colleagues and I over the years ended up calling this place "Cheap Chinese". We have been going here for over 10 years although I have just returned back for the first time in about 6 years. This tiny hole in the wall has a special place deep in my heart. The lady who runs the front is rock solid, a real sweet heart. She'll fire off questions back to you like a machine gun. The order is always right. The decor is, yes, cheap, but acceptable, and for today's visit all the light bulbs were on. Plus they must have scrubbed the walls clean. It is bright in the dining room now, something, if I remember correctly, that was missing previously. The main dish everyone I know comes here for are the Hunan spicy wonton appetizer. Those soft puffy little orbs of rice pasta filled with cooked pork, ginger and scallions, bathed in a pool of slightly spicy soy sauce. Still the best around! Still pleasing. Today I had the shrimp with vegetables, side of pork fried rice and egg drop soup. The soup was ok. The shrimp and veg was delicious and a good size portion. The fried rice was good. My friend had General Chicken and reported it to be good. All the food came out piping hot. My lunch was 7.50! Now that is cheap Chinese! Back again on 06/02 for a spicy wonton fix and an egg roll. If I could give this place zero stars I would. It was the worse Chinese I've ever had. I just ordered house special, chicken wings, and generals chicken. Ended up throwing Aeverything out. For me, Cheng's is the standard for Chinese take-out. Saying that, I firmly believe that Chinese is something you like based on your early experiences with it and preferences vary greatly. That being said, I've been going to Cheng's for nearly 20 years and can't complain about anything there. I love many of their dishes. Their General Tso's is excellent although not super spicy unless you ask. The hot and sour soup is a personal favorite as is their beef and mushrooms which is unlike any similarly named dish I've seen in other Chinese restaurants. They also are very good about making things "your way". If you get something and it isn't as spicy as you like, next time ask for it spicier. If there's not enough sauce for your tastes, ask for more. They're polite and accommodating. For me personally, I compare all other Chinese take-out to Cheng's. This is in the category of take-out, remember. I'm not comparing this to, say a PF Chang's or local authentic eat-in restaurant. Those are definitely a different category. But, in the category of Chinese take-out, for me, this is the best it gets. read more

There's nothing wrong with the food here. It's standard Chinese food and it's ready quickly. The issue I have is that they overcharged me knowingly and that is just bad business. The guy ahead of had basically ordered the same thing as me, but he also got a spring roll and it came to $10.90. When I went to pay, mine was $13.90 minus the spring roll. I thought that was odd, but I don't like to make a scene and I assume people are honest so I paid and then left. It is pretty cheap, they get orders ready quickly, and in my experience almost never mess up the orders. This was my first, and last time getting Chinese take out from this place. It was absolutely AWFUL. The boneless spareribs were so tough and tasted OLD and in the garbage. The chicken in the chow mein was like rubber and the vegies the only thing going for it. The same with the chicken soup, broth and rice OK, chicken was uneatable!
