no meat in the general tsos "chicken"

Beware if you're eating at Fortune Garden -- you're about to be RIPPED OFF. I've been looking for a classic Chinese takeout spot in the area and was excited to try this spot! I literally could not be more disappointed. At first glance, it looks promising because it's your standard no frills hole in the wall. I placed an order for white meat general tsos on the phone -- the woman advised me it'd be a $1.50 up charge. The food was ready in 20 minutes and was piping hot but a super small portion and rice came to $13. Half of the pieces in my dish don't even have chicken in them!! They are just fried dough doused in sauce. How do you mess up the most classic dish?! Stay away and find another Chinese takeout spot!

    Wonton Soup (eh!)

Fortune Garden is a shoebox Chinese American takeout spot on Rt. 206, Lawrenceville, NJ. It has all the usual suspects on their menu, with the ubiquitous broccoli and fried rice in every dish they put in a brown bag. If you're in the area and looking for a quick lunch to eat at your desk, this kitchen is as good as any, and better than some. I called ahead for Pork Egg Foo Young and Wonton Soup, and drove up from Trenton in less than 10 minutes. Yes. Fried Rice was plentiful under the two pancakes. While the Wonton was a lesson in future avoidance due to thick dough and questionable meat filling, the Egg Foo Young was actually decent. It was not overly oily, and had plenty of veggies and roast pork strips within. Their brown sauce was lighter than many (a good thing), and did not separate as it cooled. But for the weak effort on the soup, the EFY deserved a higher score. Maybe management will read this and get to work improving those wontons and flavoring up the consumme.

Solid takeout spot for classic Chinese American food.  My family has been coming here for years and the food is consistently tasty at this family run place.  Our go-to orders are beef & broccoli and chicken & mushrooms lunch specials with hot and sour soup. Food is always piping hot and ready at the pick up time given by the lady answering the phone who efficiently takes your order.  She wears a mask and gloves, and there is a partition set up between the customer and the register. There is ample free parking right in front of the restaurant with easy access to Route 206.  There's a couple chairs and a table, if you want to eat in, but almost everyone does take out. Do yourself a favor when the craving for Chinese food hits you.  This place does the classics right.

ordered food here last night. I went in to pick up and the cook behind the counter did everything with his bare hands. Most platters come with broccoli he took his bare hands and placed All of the broccoli in his hands. I got sesame chicken and they obliterated my food and doused my chicken with spoonfuls of sesame.

For this year's Chinese New Year, I decided to take the family there for our New Year dinner, and the food was just as good as I remembered. The place hasn't changed a bit, the decor still looks exactly how I remember it, which brought back memories. Since some of my family and friends don't enjoy the same spice level as I do, we adjusted the heat for dinner, and everything still came out fantastic. We ordered the whole steamed fish, happy fish, green beans, tea smoked duck, pork chop, beef pan fried noodles, and more. Every dish was delicious, and the flavors were spot on. The service was a bit tentative at times, but the quality of the food definitely made up for it. Overall, it was a wonderful meal and a great way to celebrate. I definitely need to come back more often.

It seems that both the pepper steak and chicken with broccoli were in the same sauce (& I've actually found that to be common in this area for some reason) but were tasty overall. The egg roll was quite greasy and the wonton soup was pretty solid with the broth being the star. Oh the white rice was cooked how I expect and wish all Chinese white rice is cooked so that's a plus. Overall a true 3.5 star rating but since halves aren't possible I had to go to 3 because it certainly wasn't a 4.

The sauce had just enough numbing warmth without overpowering the dish, and every bite was incredibly satisfying. Beyond the appetizer, the restaurant offered a warm atmosphere and attentive service that made the dining experience even better. When it comes to food, I never judge a burger by its bun, so thanks to Yelp for helping me find it. The sign in the window says "Asian fusion" which usually sends me running as it's often a cop-out label for bad mixed-up Asian cooking, but this is authentic y'all, meaning true-to-tradition dishes with a sometimes more contemporary application of ingredients or flavors. The "fusion" part must come from the fact that they have a small Taiwanese section as well as the main Szechuan/Sichuan menu, alongside a few familiar Chinese-American favorites like sesame chicken or broccoli x protein, so you can get that here too. Everything we ordered was phenomenal! Great flavors, generous portions, cooked with confidence and finesse. Compliments to the kitchen - they really know what they're doing. Not a single dish was lacking. They even put out peanuts at the start and serve fresh orange slices at the end of the meal. Very old school. We loved it all: * Salt & white pepper crispy chicken ("Taiwanese specialty") - well-battered and flavored, and perfectly crispy * Taiwanese minced pork rice * Chicken red curry - fabulous, with fresh vegetables and just the right balance of spice * Golden dish (fish) - very special dish in a salted duck egg yolk batter * Beef chow fun * Marinated crispy duck Wish I lived closer, but will definitely come back when we are in the area. Best of the best - very highly recommended!

All of the above were true, and the food was quite good too. Each of us got a lunch special w/ Thai Basil Beef, and it was a good dish. Service is pretty fast and friendly; the waiter switched our soup orders by accident, but when he came back to bring more stuff, he noticed when we had switched them, which I give him some credit for. Everything is nice and fast, no issues there. Inside, it's a pretty good amount of space, and nice decoration throughout. My friend and I both thought the door to get from the foyer into the restaurant had a really nice design. Everything in there is clean and nicely put together. The food, however, is well prepared and fresh in quality. The restaurant does seem to cater towards a more elderly audience based on the presentation styles and music choices. While the vegetables and shrimp dishes were clearly fused from different cultures to some extent, the fried rice might have had a bit too much salt as diabetes is on the rise these days--so we tend to choose lighter salt in meals. The pricing could also be more reasonable for simple and traditional choices.
