I ordered here to go for the first time as I was in town for work. I ordered the crab cheese, wontons, the shrimp, toast, the wonton soup, and the bbq pork mei fun. Everything was delicious. The crab cheese wontons were crispy and flavorful, and although the shrimp toast was a little bit overcooked, it was still very good. The wonton soup had decent flavor, and the barbecued pork mei fun was very good. The only exception to my order was I asked for no onions and my mei fun still had onions in it. There is a $15 minimum order for delivery, so I ordered an additional two spring rolls and a diet coke. The order was delivered quickly; the delivery person was respectful and pleasant, and the food was delicious. It was hot, perfectly prepared--the broccoli and shrimp could be cut with a fork--they were tender and not under - or over-cooked. The spring rolls were crispy and tasty! Yes, I get Chinese food is not meant to be mind blowing, but this is below mediocre. I came here for lunch and ordered General Tso Chicken that swam in a puddle of oil in my styrofoam plate. If I am eating artery clogging food, I don't want to see the oil ooze out of it. My rice was lackluster as well. And as a lover of egg rolls, I also would like my egg rolls to have more than just boiled cabbage in them. Royal Chef is much bigger inside than it appears from outside. There are actually ten tables for dining in, so it is more than just a takeout joint. I stopped in for a late lunch and ordered from the lunch menu (General Tso's Chicken, Fried Rice, Broccoli with a bowl of Wonton Soup). The soup was actually the strongest part of the lunch. The chicken consume base was tasty, and the wontons, although somewhat thick skinned, actually had a decent flavor, too. The general's chicken was a large mound of amber glossed bird nuggets. About half of them were the right texture and taste, while the others were either too thickly skinned, or too crunchy to enjoy. Could not always taste the meat within. The fried rice was a large helping with adequate veggies to keep it interesting. Of course, the broccoli florets were there for decoration more than consumption. The meal was just okay overall. I appreciated that there was a dining room where I could sit and eat lunch. It would have been even better if they used real plates and flatware, rather than styro and plastic, and a take out container for the soup. Service was provided by the cashier who was attractive and pleasant to all customers. The sign out front is worn and faded, and could use a little TLC to keep the shop from looking worse than it is. A little fresh paint and relettering would make China Chef a more upbeat place to chow down (no pun intended). read more

Meh. Semi-decent enough chinese food take-out. We ordered wonton soup, eggrolls, Garlic Chicken, and Beef Lo Mein. The soup was lackluster, and the broth-to-wonton ratio was terrible (like 12 wontons and 3 scoops of broth); unfortunately that's always the case in my experience with chinese take-out, so it's more or less innocuous. Eggrolls were delicious! Fry enough dough and I'll probably tell you it was well-done! My qualm lays mostly with the chicken dish; it was served with vegetables (carrots, celery, mushrooms) that were VERY crunchy (okay, points here for using fresh veggies...) and flavorless, the mushrooms tasted like they were added in half a minute before being put in the container (IE like nothing.) The dish just didn't work. The food was harmless enough, but definitely not exciting. On the plus side, we ordered through Grubhub, the delivery was ontime (projected an hour, and showed up in exactly an hour). I probably won't order from here again just because it was nothing to write home about. And thus continues the hunt for good chinese take-out. read more

The chicken was ok, they rice doesn't look anything like the pictures online and there's very little pork in there. I live very far away from any Chinese restaurant so I was happy, while traveling, to be staying so close to Royal Chef. It seemed to get decent reviews so I decided to check it out. Unfortunately, I was greeted by a rude person at the front counter. Normally I would have just said thanks and walked out, but I was hungry and didn't feel like searching for another Chinese restaurant. My main entre was meh. The chicken fingers were good, but halfway through them I looked into the finger and found something black. I pulled it out and couldn't tell if it was: a mouse turd, a booger, or a bug. I like going here for lunch. Nothing particularly great about it but they add the right amount of grease, MSG, sodium and sugar to make any meat delicious. Royal chef was my go to place for Chinese food for the last two years. Their customer service has gone downhill. During Covid I have ordered pickup from them about 3 times prior and have had no issues. I ordered a combination platter of chicken broccoli and a small veg chow mein around 6pm and was told my order would be ready in 20 minutes. They didn't seem to have a great system going on as the girl in the front was constantly running back and forth. They should have had her stay up at the front since there were multiple customers waiting. Myself and others had to ring the doorbell multiple times to get her attention. I got my order on time, and paid but wasn't given my receipt. Thankfully I checked the bag before leaving - they gave me the wrong order. She was about to hand me the correct order but somehow failed to say that there was only 2 out of the 3 rolls that I ordered and tried to offer me 2 cans of soda instead. She told me I'd have to wait another 10 min and I said I'd wait because I already paid for it. The process took about another half an hour of waiting instead because other customers had issues as well. I live about 5 minutes away from this place and by the time I got home the food was warm and lost its taste. I opened the food bag and instead of chow mein (which I was under the impression is thin stir fried noodles) and instead it was just a pint of vegetables in some kind of white sauce. I called the restaurant 4x and they did not answer. Was super disappointed. I don't think I'll be ordering from here again. read more

Since changing jobs, I'm on a mission to find a new favorite Chinese place. I went to Royal Chef as it was only 2 miles from my job. First issue was placing the order, the guy who I spoke with was rude and hung up on me as I was going to ask for a total. I get there and the décor is typical. I could tell it was a busy time, so I just stood and waited. Finally a guy, most likely the one I spoke with, assisted me. He was rude and dismissive when I asked a question about my total. Now for the food, ugh. Ok the shrimp roll was hard and extra flakly. So each time I took a bite it was flaking all over the place. The pork fried rice is horrible. No flavor or anything, just rice, peas & carrots. Side note- Why do some places put peas & carrots in the rice? I don't get it. Ok now for the General Tso's. This has been my go to for edible and fairly priced take out. But this last order was terrible and undercooked. Usually I suck it up but the lemon chicken was just simply undercooked. Despite the low price point, I don't think I'll be ordering from here again. While this was not the first time the food had issues, it was the last straw for me. I placed a delivery order last night. My order was taken by a pleasant, courteous person, and delivered by an equally pleasant and courteous person, which is what earned the stars given. The food, I'm sorry to say, left much to be desired. I ordered spring rolls, seemed to have been fried at the correct temperature, making them adequately crispy and not overly greasy, but the filling lacked flavor. The crab rangoon filling was what I'd expected, but the wrappers were fried so hard that the edges were rock-hard. The accompanying sauce was flavored as expected, but much too thin. The pork fried rice had a fair amount of what appeared to be fresh vegetables and pork, so it was passable, for me. The bourbon chicken was stringy and tough, coated in a thin, bland sauce. There was plenty of food, as per usual with Chinese takeout - enough for another meal or 2 - but rather than saving the leftovers, I threw them out. The best part of this meal was a small container of canned pineapple chunks that was included gratis. I moved to this area about a year and a half ago and have yet to find a "go-to" for Chinese takeout. The search, unfortunately continues. read more
