General Tso's Tofu - that portion size though!
    Vivek D.

Chinese Takeout often gets the short end of the stick on Yelp. Most are - on average - 3-3.5 stars at best. People get turned off sometimes by the aura of the place. Others probably had a bad delivery experience. Neither of those situations really impacted me. For the longest while, I've been trying to find a Chinese takeout place that was good and also had one of my favorite items: General Tso's Tofu. There are about 3 different Chinese takeout places (excluding Shu House - which I love, but serves a very different purpose and taste bud) near me and only one of them explicitly stated General Tso's Tofu was on the menu. Sadly, it wasn't as good as I thought. China Wok has it on their menu (huge shoutout to a previous reviewer for stating it), even though it's not explicitly labeled on the menu (Fix that and I'll rate you 5 stars!). Luckily, I called in for it and it was ready in 10-15 mins. The food itself was amazing. It has the maroon red color which is what I was looking for. Nice and spicy, with a sweet-ish aftertaste. Plenty of tofu too. Tofu was also nice and firm. Just a few pieces of broccoli, which was fine. There's always room for a couple of more pieces of broccoli, but minor suggestion nonetheless. The best part is the value. For $10, you effectively get 2 full dinners out of this. Or be even more economical and you can get 3 full meals - 1 dinner and 2 lunches or whatever order. I don't know how you beat that value. Highly recommend!

So I'll start with- it's Chinese food takeout, not a gourmet restaurant just to put things into perspective. The restaurant is conveniently located, and open late, easy to call in to make an order and quick, friendly service. The ambiance inside is honestly so homey in the sense that I can imagine Chinese relatives running this shop and that's how it would look- boxes and stuff stored where they used to seat customers because I think they're solely take out now. Food wise, we ordered fried whole wings, wonton soup, chicken lo mein , chicken with broccoli and chicken with pepper and onions. They had all this ready in 10 mins! Everything was really good, the only thing I didn't love was the chicken with peppers and onions. But I re-stir fried it with more seasonings and then served it with hit chili oil and it was loads better. So that's the benefit of take out! The chicken wings were crispy and so good with some hot sauce that they offer. The wonton soup was savory and not watery. The lo mein was how you would expect it to be. Chicken and broccoli was solid, and chicken with peppers and onions was a little heavy on the sauce with little flavor. But again I just recooked it with more seasonings and added hot chili oil and ate it all up. All that food came out to be like $43 and lasted us like 3-4 days. So that's a pretty good deal! All in all, if you're craving Chinese food I recommend this place.

On a snowy Sunday afternoon, I decided to treat myself to Chinese food delivery. I ordered beef chow fun, my go-to order, from China Wok on GrubHub. I appreciated that they weren't stingy about the amount of beef and the beef was very tender! However, there were too many onions at the bottom for my taste and it was overall a bit greasy. Regardless, I was given a satisfying amount of food for my taste and it satisfied my craving for Chinese food!

Today was our second time ordering from China Wok since moving into the area. First experience was pretty mediocre. Our first order: We had the Kung Pao Chicken and the General Tso's Chicken. We also ordered a side of pork fried rice. Not horrible, and their Kung Pao does not skimp out on the peanut to meat ratio which is very important texture and flavor wise. Overall, the first time we ever ordered and ate from here was definitely better than our second time experience. For our second order: We had Cold Sesame Noodles, Wings with Garlic Sauce, Vegetable Low Mein, Dragon & Phoenix w/ white rice, Crab Rangoon. We wanted to have a much larger outlook on what their menu entails, which is why we ordered so much more this time around. Everything seemed to fall flat. This dinner mostly consisted of Fried foods which were generally soggy and chewy. We understand we had to wait 45 minutes for our food delivery, but we have ordered fried food in other delivery restaurants and the food sustained its crunch and flavor without falling into that depressing soggy/chewy texture. The staff seems very on top of things from our experience, which we greatly appreciate, and also why I rated them 3 Stars. So - Will we eat here again? Maybe not. The first time around was definitely better than the second. But the food overall is not a saving grace.

Have never had a bad thing to say. And the reason they are getting a sold 4 starts is because everything els was good. But my general tso chicken came with out sauce and super dry. I will put up the picture. That is my only complaint. They take good care of us but this is very nasty and I will throw it out for the 11$ I spent. That is not general tso. And the guy on the phone repeated back general tso.

The next building over from where I received a good Tui Na massage, I saw the sign for "China Wok", and felt it was time for a light lunch before heading back to the office. It is right next door to a bagel joint that was once called "Bagel Express," but is called something else now. The store was simple, with only four booths and about eight tables spread around. The menu had the usual Chinese/American suspects (General Tso, etc.), and clearly did more take away business than dining in. Still, they were friendly and treated me well throughout my time there. I choose the Orange Chicken, Fried Rice and Egg Roll @ $7. They did not seem to mind that I drank the bottle of water from the spa given me when I departed. They delivered my lunch on a plate, which always is a plus compared to those joints that just given you the take out container and a plastic fork and basically tell you not to bother staying there next time. The quantity was above average, and the overall taste/satisfaction was decent, if not memorable. The sauce was somewhat lacking flavor, giving an impression that they use it for several dishes, and alter it depending on what is ordered. The chicken was tender, but not juicy. Freezer life does that. Their Egg Roll was better than expected, although small in stature. Fried Rice was brown from the beef broth used to cook it earlier in the day, but it had a fair amount of pork, peas and other veggies. The air conditioning was sorely taxed on this hot day. No better or worse than any other Chinois house that plies its trade in the take out wars of Central Jersey.

Beyond the appetizer, the restaurant offered a warm atmosphere and attentive service that made the dining experience even better. The presentation was thoughtful, portions were generous, and the flavors tasted authentic and carefully prepared. Glad I made a reservation via Google Assistant b/c it was a full house plus tons of people waiting (1hr) for their takeout orders. Great sign! We ordered quite a bit for 3 of us b/c we're excited to try them out. We loved them all especially the wontons in the authentic sauce as it should be (not in sesame or peanut sticky sauce), the salt/pepper chicken as how I remembered from back home, the delicious noodle soup with tender beef and tendon, and the flavorful black bean fish. The restaurant is nice and clean. They're busy but the kitchen was pretty quick. The waitress brought out the dish as it's done, not waiting to serve all dishes at once. We actually preferred this way. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. We really enjoy our dinner. It's less than 30 min for us; we will definitely return to try some Sichuan dishes.

The service is very friendly and patient (and American friendly). The food comes out lightning fast. Everything is very reasonably priced. Best of all, it's all delicious. We were second standing outdoors waiting in this big fat long line. Immediately upon opening for the day the line nearly forced entry near stampede and this cafe was immediately packed to full occupancy of patrons with free seating. The Yelp reviews are accurate and truthful. The food is great. This is a small cafe with only approximately eight tables. I do not recommend large parties of five and greater. It is no-frills, but not exactly "hole in the wall" type that lack in aesthetics for upscale lavish atmosphere but the deficiency is resolved in the food quality. There is one sole functioning restroom in the whole business, ergo, stand in line and wait. We entered hungry in a lugubrious sense of deep sorrow, but exited hunger pangs fulfilled. When exiting upon completion of our lunch meal, there was a line that quickly formed outdoors waiting. Unfortunately, access to this cafe in Edison, NJ is by car only and there is a free parking lot that is shared with neighboring businesses located in a small shopping complex. There are no business cards, and no takeout menus available. Customer service is efficient as the staff worked methodically hustling busy to take orders and fulfillment. Our male waiter was attentive to respond to our inquiries and make suggestions based on our desires. I was able to keep the sales receipt. Price is in the rationale realm of stagflation totaling $41.75. Nota Bene: No table hibernation as the table turnover is fast pace with a line overflowing outdoors which cannot interrupt the flow. My foodie synopsis: Pork steam soup dumplings, 6 pcs, siu2 lung4 baau1, 小籠包, $8.75 Very juicy, flavorful and great. It was served piping hot. This is my favorite default dish for every visit at any Shanghainese ethnic cuisine. However, there were no serving tongs provided for this particular appetizer which is industry standard. Preserved cabbage with pork noodle soup, syut3 coi3 juk6 si1 min6, 雪菜肉絲麵 $9.50 This is a satisfying Chinese comfort food. This noodle soup was abundant with noodles, pork and chopped vegetables. It provided warmth to my very broken heart. Shanghai chicken in wine sauce, zeoi3 gai1, 醉雞, $8.95 A traditional Chinese cold appetizer, aka Chinese Drunken chicken made with Chinese Shaoxing cooking wine. It has amazing flavor and texture to be deliciously enticing. Of course, the cooking wine brings flavor to this appetizer making you want more. Shanghai pan fried U-Don noodle, soeng6 hoi2 cou1 caau2 min6, 上海粗炒面, $11.95 Abundant noodles with good consistency and it not heavily filled with grease and oil.

We went for the first time Sunday at like 3pm? Full. Take out orders flying out the door. It's a cute place. Standard strip mall aesthetic. But they do have a window where you can see them hand pulling the noodles. That's right, hand pulling the noodles which is the main attraction. The food is from the North Western part of China near Pakistan so there are some Indian influences like their Cumin lamb and pulled noodles one of their most popular dishes. But I'm getting ahead of myself. With my vegetarian wife who as usual ruins everything by insisting we order vegetarian appetizers. Scallion pancakes were delicious. No pictures because we ate them immediately. Pan fried dumpling. 9 of them. That's a big portion. And it was like 9-10 bucks? They make their own dumpling wrappers, their own dipping sauces. Dumplings were very good. You could really taste the vegetables. Focused on the quality of the ingredients. My wife had the hand pulled noodles in hot oil. Marked spicy it was American spicy. Did not blow your head off. O enjoyed them. They give you a pair of scissors. Because it's one long noodle. Do not use them on your birthday. More on that later. I had the aforementioned cumin lamb and pulled noodles. I liked it but it was overwhelmingly cumin flavored which obviously is the point of cumin lamb. I'm not saying over seasoned I'm just saying it announced itself as this is cumin lamb. Period. We also had bubble tea! How fun is that? My wife had taro which they made with non dairy milk for her. I had pomegranate with exploding bubbles. Never had those before. Also super fun. They did not explode in an American way or even a Chinese way as both countries let's face it are pretty well known for making things explode. No in a pleasant way. Waitress was delightful we had obviously a long conversation about the food and the restaurant. The scissors are for Americans who share their food. In China you would eat the noodles slurp them without cutting them because eating long noodles especially on your birthday is supposed to promote a long life. We did not learn this until after cutting my wife's noodles. It was her birthday. I will miss her but also look forward to meat based appetizers. One door closes and all that. They also own the bakery a few doors down. Very light chiffon style cakes. Not too sweet. Chocolate Oreo cake. I asked if that was very traditional. Oh how we laughed at my hilarious joke.

The broth's flavor was on the mild side, whilst relying on the spice's heat to shine as the primary flavor. The beef was also mild, but especially tender. There was also a good amount of proteins in the soup and the hand pulled noodles were perfectly thick and chewy. Overall it was a great dish for a chilly night out.
