I am a licensed ice cream man in the city of CAYUCOS. I was selling ice cream at the 150 year anniversary of Cayucos. I stopped to take a break and have a refreshment at Schooners. I parked my ice cream trike at the public bike parking area. I was enjoying the day when this manager owner ego maniac says I can't be there. He the takes my drink and walks away. This Pompas no situational awareness of what is actually going on. I usually eat lunch twice a month at schoolers. I don't think I will be going back anytime soon. You owe me a drink. Was here on a Monday. Food lacked flavor. Ordered the ceviche, guac, & chips. Had to wait a while and ask someone else for hot sauce and lime- at that point my chips were getting soggy. I got two tiny slices of lime that were pretty dry. It's disappointing that the ceviche had no citrus flavor like it should. And not enough chips. Otherwise the view was nice. FOOD: lets begin with the understanding that tastebuds differentiate from one person to the next, some people have fewer, even larger tastebuds while others have many more smaller tastebuds, making it difficult to say that someone else will agree with my PERSONAL assessment. Nevertheless, the New England Clam Chowder was too salty for my taste (I did send the chowder back and I was given a full refund for it) aside from that, the Calamari and Halibut where cooked to perfection. The "chips" / french fries also tasted great! (perfect crunch and seasoning) I had a coffee and that too had great roasted flavor. AMBIANCE: a perfect 10! We sat outside, had a table facing the ocean and that always makes a location a perfect place to relax. We were a party of 5 celebrating my brothers birthday and drove up from south county. Place was pretty quiet on a weeknight in January so we had the dining room to ourselves. Service was great, everyone was very friendly and helpful. Our server went above and beyond to accommodate us with extra plates and silverware for the birthday cake I brought. Food was all delicious. We tried several appetizers including the tuna, calamari, steamed clams and crab cakes. Everything was delicious. I got the New York with a lobster tail and my only disappointment was that I ate too much of the appetizers to eat more than a few bites of my dinner but the steak was great the next morning with some eggs lol. After a day of wine tasting in Paso Robles decided to swing by this small town of Cayucos. We were starving and went for the first place that caught our eye. The service was nice, we were seated very quickly, for starters I ordered the calamari, this was so delicious my favorite dish. The main courses where the sea food pasta which I found to be very runny, not creamy as described and it was also very bland. The second dish was the New York strip, it was cooked perfectly but once again, the seasoning was hardly noticeable. The dungeons crab was awfully hard to eat because it wasn't pre cracked nor did it cum with a claw cracker. Overall it was ok, as you can see the food presentation was nice. Would I come back? Idk maybe it just wasn't my style. But glad I visited this beautiful town. read more

Went to Schooners on Saturday night. My son had just proposed to his girlfriend on the beach. The family took the good vibe to dinner. Hostess was MIA for a bit and waited a short while for a table once someone appeared,we were there for about 30 to just get drinks which only one of us had a cocktail , rest waters. as tables around us were attended to. Our food while delicious took forever and rarely did we see our waitress. She was inattentive and everywhere seemed to be getting attention but us. We were tired and exhausted to boot large part gratuity was added for 4 adults and 2 children. I the service so was incredibly poor and not how we thought the night would have ended. The food was really good! The staff were very sweet, literally all of them, they seem to be busy but enjoy each other and their jobs. It's a very cute, cozy place with a really nice heated outdoor patio upstairs with a gorgeous view. The people eating there were all enjoying themselves, it seemed mostly locals and they all just seem pleasant, but who wouldn't be in Cayucos! We came at about 3:00 on Saturday. Found the "please wait to be seated sign" and waited. Another party soon stood behind us. There were seated tables, but the restaurant was not busy. At least three servers walked right past us and did not acknowledge us. The bartender could clearly see us but also did not acknowledge us at all. We balanced fried halibut with 1/2 & 1/2 onion rings and chips and flash fried ahi egg rolls with some fresh ceviche with avocado and pickled red onions served with crispy chips. Hit the spot! Glad we didn't sit inside. The Mai Tai was pretty mediocre but hey, my glass of Chardonnay was just fine. Was returning from Hearst Castle on a drizzling night and called this restaurant to see if five of us could get in. Those just came back after talking to someone and said yes about half an hour. When we got there, we only had to wait like five minutes. We were all pretty tired and we had three kids. The youngest got the kids plate with a burger and fries and ate it all, the 12 year-old got grilled cheese and said it was pretty good. Then there was the 15-year-old she got a regular hamburger and Fries and ended up eating it all. I had fish and onion rings pretty good. Also had a mai tai it's not like the old Mai Tai's that were tall it was rather short, but I drank it. My husband wasn't feeling well so he had water. Let's start with the positive. We've enjoyed Schooners many times over several years. Upstairs, great atmosphere and a cozy bar if you like. Tonight though I was disappointed. The "Lobster Mac" caught my eye and I went for it. It tastes good but .., You remember that old Wendy's commercial where the old lady said, "Where's the beef?" Well, where's the LOBSTER? The menu clearly says "Large chunks of lobster". When I couldn't find any I asked the waitress. She assured me it was in there. I asked if she wouldn't mind showing me. She declined. Disappointed!!! We went late last night And did not really get the best service. I ordered her a cabernet for 15 dollars, But it did not taste the price. If you like wine you will know When you have wine that is not really good quality. The hostess was a bit reluctant to sit us down last night.We got there at eight fifteen pm but she ignored me until I grabbed her attention like 10 minutes after... so sad. also and they close at 9pm. But this is not the first time that we have a hard time being sat down by the hostess. The waitress was very sweet. I ordered my cab, tea for my kids and a desert. The desert looked lovely but it took very long it was very awkward waiting so long. When I say they're kinda bad service I mean no napkins given just Very minimum interaction. As I waited I heard other customers who were also upset w the service and even complained about the bar service as well. Came with a side of skinny fries. - Crab cakes: These were okay. There was an okay mix of crab and filler, with plenty of sauce. Came on a bed of fresh lettuce topped with roasted corn salsa. I think a nice option as an appetizer if you have people who aren't into raw/fresh seafood. Pros: - Location, location, location. Literally right across from the beach, if you sit upstairs you get a great view while eating. Even on their patio, you can opt to sit at the stools looking out back. - Ordered my food to go, and all the staff were friendly. - Little to go order window at the back of the restaurant. I did have to walk through the patio area to ask the hostess for help. - Plenty of parking in front and behind the restaurant, especially at night. - Price was right - I did not eat in, but it seemed to have a nice rowdy atmosphere at "night." The waitress acted like she was trying to be an influencer and spoke in that weird drawl where the end of her sentences were lilting up so everything was a question. And the food was not good. The fish and chips was Alaskan cod, so previously frozen and had zero taste, save the flavor of fryer grease. There are much better places to eat on the central coast that offer fresh fish. Super disappointed with this place. We arrived on Monday at 7:30pm and the hostess stated it's a 45min wait. I said it's fine and she goes the kitchen will close at 8:30pm, I asked what happens if we get in and the kitchen is closing? She basically just shrugged her shoulders and was like "oh well". I responded saying so we wait 45mins and once we get in the kitchen closes and we're just out of luck? She seemed hesitant and just said I'm just letting you know the kitchen will close. Confused and already put off by the service we were discussing to leave and she comes and says a table just opened up but inside do you guys want it? Since it was already late and with 2 kids we decided to just stay. We started off with the clam chowder which was excellent! Then ordered the NY Prime steak, Halibut and a cheeseburger and kids meal burger. The steak unfortunately was the worse I've ever had! It was super tough, and looked like a cheap cut of frozen steak. On top the crispy onion was probably also store bought and horribly old. Very disappointing. Halibut was ok as was the burger, but again fries also probably frozen. Really disappointing experience. Place looked cute from the outside, but turned out to be kind of a dive inside. Food was OK at best - more like overpriced bar food. The live band wasn't bad, but the music was way too loud for the space, making it hard to have a conversation. Worst of all was the service. The waitress was unpleasant (and seemed as if she might have been a bit stoned), drink orders took forever and didn't arrive until shortly before our food was served, and our appetizers were forgotten completely. There was no attempt at a "make good" (like comping a dessert or the missing appetizers) for our trouble. We won't be back. read more

We were very disappointed with the clam chowder and our server. We were traveling with a friend from AZ, she wanted clam chowder. We thought that we had just the place, but it wasn't that way the day we visited. The 3 of us were seated quickly and our orders were taken. We all ordered water, calamari and clam chowder. Food came quickly, but tge server didn't have much time for us after that, maybe because we weren't ordering cocktails? Not sure, but we had to ask for salt, pepper and hot sauce. The salt and pepper came after asking again. Calamaricwas great, but I have never had clam chowder so watered down and I have never had crunchy celery in it before!
