For the price charged, you'll think that some sides should be included with the sandwiches. The fish seemed fresh and tasty but the fries were not (kinda of soggy). We were there on a Saturday lunch rush so may be the reason for the food quality. As a meat loving omnivore, my curiosity was peaked when I heard that there was a HofBrau in the town of Morro Bay. I was in town road tripping and happen to be on Embarcadero Street, the main touristy drag on the edge of the harbor where the Hofbrau is located. So off we go. The Hofbrau is tucked a bit beyond the front sidewalk, it's easy to miss. There are a few parking spaces (including ADA) in lot in front of the eatery. The lot is compact and requires a few 3 pt turns to maneuver about. So as I stepped into the joint. The cashier gave us a sincere welcome. Having told her it's our first time here, she let us know that we order and pay at the counter with the food brought out to us and there is no assigned seating. I asked what's their best selling hot sandwich. She advised to get a French Dip. So I did. Drumroll please.... unfortunately the sandwich fell flat. The roast beef was flavorless and dry. The plate came out without the au jus. I didn't notice at first and had to go back to the counter to ask for it. But aw shucks, the au jus turned out to be lackluster as well. Lacking distinct flavor. Both the sandwich and au jus temp was lukewarm. Disappointing. Could it have been an "off day"?! Anomaly?! Let's talk about the view! Impressive. The interior dining room diners can get the same great views of the harbor, ocean, the Morro Bay as the patio diners. We scored an outside table. At first, I was extremely concerned with the busy body seagulls. But it wasn't an issue. They stayed clear. So the scenery did lessen the disappoint of the sandwich. This is a hidden gem tucked away behind the main strip. We stumbled onto it looking for somewhere that wasn't packed, and apparently we beat the lunch crowd -- right after we ordered and sat down, people started pouring in. Everyone at our table was pleased with what they got. I had the basic fish and chips, which they do phenomenally well: crisp batter, and I really liked the tartar sauce and the other condiments served alongside. It's not on the menu for some reason, but you can also order coleslaw, which I enjoyed -- lightly dressed with a little vinegar bite. They serve beer and wine, plus the usual soft drinks. Firstly, if you're able to sit outside I'd highly recommend enjoying the beautiful scenic views. The young lady taking our order was very sweet, she was able to explain the popular items on the menu and gave us her recommendations. The best part of the meal were the French fries, however the portions and pricing of it were not the greatest. Decent corned beef on the water. Ordered a cup of clam chowder, as well as the corned beef sandwich/dip, which I split with my dad. Clam chowder was a classic style, not too chunky. Corned beef sandwich was good, but preferred it not dipped. For Diet Coke fans, their soda machine was super carbonated, so it was good. We ate here while exploring Morro Bay. You walk in and review an overhead menu and place the order with the cashier. There seemed to be some good food options here as well as beer selection. We ordered and grabbed a table outside with a nice view to Morro Rock. We ordered a Rueben sandwich, a chicken sandwich, a chicken sandwich with avocado, bacon and cheese (ABC) and fish n chips. The Rueben and ABC chicken sandwich were great! I was impressed with the gourmet lettuce and the brioche bun. The other two items, regular chicken sandwich and the fish n chips were OK. OK, of course I won't stop going to the Hofbrau - it is an instutution and every time my family visits we have to go here. I went recently and, again, I am unhappy with the fries. The hostess didn't describe them accurately or I would have substituted a salad. These are basic boring steak fries, dry and too thick. I remember back when you had yummy fries every time. Lately it is hit and miss, sort of like your chicken strips!! I am only going to order the roast beef sandwich that you are so famous for going forward. I tried the turkey, I tried the chicken strips, the cheeseburgers are OK, but I think the roast beef sandwich is the go-to at this restaurant. Location, location, location. This is prime real estate with an epic view. Located on Morrowbay touching the water. In the background you have a nature reserve and Morrow Bay Rock. The seafood is good here, as good as Seattle's, just like Seattle and Portland most of the food is breaded and fried. This isn't the nicest restaurant but it's good for all ages, you can eat here if you're bundled in winter gear or beach attire, weather permitting. The beer selection is small but good. The staff and service is fast and efficient. You only speak to them when you order food at the counter and grab your food. The rest is self service. read more

It's our go to place for whenever we head to Morro Bay - I love their German potato salad which is warm and yummy and my husband is a big fan of the French dip which I am as well. Downside is they charge you $.50 for water per cup and went there two days in a row on the second day the meat was kind of chewy but I think that's an anomaly because it's typically really good. We were visiting for the night and out our names in next door at The Galley Seafood Grill & Bar. I'm sure it's a wonderful spot but the wait was 45-60 minutes, so we went on a walk. Hofbrau was right next door. Lots of people but still easy to grab a table so we canceled our wait at The Galley, grabbed some menus and took a seat. At Hofbrau, you order at the front and they bring your food to your table. They bus the tables but they aren't waiting on you. This was perfectly fine for our family of 4 with no expectations, and we still had an amazing view of Morro Rock. The food was great! I've had a lot of fish and chips, this was among the best I've had. The fish was crispy on the outside and very flaky on the inside. My husband got the ribeye but in hindsight wishes he had cheese on it like it usually calls for. Tender meat but otherwise rather plain tasting. Hofbrau Morro Bay came highly recommended by a friend a few years ago when I mentioned we were planning a weekend trip to the area--and I'm so glad we took the advice. When my boyfriend and I first walked in, he was a bit skeptical since it's a walk-up counter service spot, which isn't usually his thing. But the moment our food arrived, all of that went out the window. The food was absolutely phenomenal. The roast beef sandwich was loaded with thick, juicy slices of perfectly cooked roast beef, and the bread was just the right mix of crisp and chewy--the perfect vessel for such a great sandwich. The fries were double-fried, giving them that ideal crispy exterior and soft, fluffy inside. The staff was friendly, fast, and efficient, and the view from the deck overlooking the water made the whole experience even better. It might look like a simple sandwich shop from the outside, but the quality and flavors make it something truly special. We now make the 2.5-hour drive regularly just to eat here--it's that good. What a great restaurant. I wonder what happened to the Hauf Braus. It used to be the any city of a certain size would always have at least one Hauf Brau. Well, this restaurant does it exactly as it should be. Meat sliced when you order it, not much in the way of fanciness, just good meat either in a sandwich or a meal. If I had an issue, the only one would be price. I guess I need to get used to the price of things like food living in a town that draws a lot of tourists. Obviously it's not enough to keep us from returning, but it would be nice if they had a local menu or some kind of discount for people who live nearby. One of the other things that I've always liked about a Hauf Brau is the atmosphere of the restaurant. It's mostly picnic style benches in the center of the restaurant, with smaller tables around the edges. It's just good food in an unpretentious environment. read more

The famous seafood joint down the street was packed and we were thirsty and hungry after a long ride from LA. We hit this joint up and it didn't disappoint. We ordered the hot and spicy french dip, fried cod sandwich, and a clam chowder bread bowl (not pictured). The french dip's beef was nice and tender. The jalapenos and pepperjack cheese were nice additions to give the sandwich some kick. The fried cod on the fish sandwich was super fresh and fried to perfection. Came here on New Year's Day in a group of 8, and we were so pleased we did! We sat at two tables for four on the patio, and the views were breathtaking! This place is great, you wait in a line to order at the counter, then you receive a number and your order is brought to your table. Though they were very busy, all our food was brought out fresh, and when requesting extra pickles...wow did they deliver! Two varieties at no extra charge! They were trying to get the food out all at once, but the bread bowls did take a bit longer. It was okay, they all arrived. Then, one of the kind workers brought out another fresh, full bread bowl, and said, oh, well here you go. They knew there was bit of a wait, wanted to make sure we got it, and they could have just taken back the extra, but they gave it to our table. Between the two tables in our group, we ordered Clam Chowder in Bread Bowls, Popcorn Shrimp, Kid's Meals with mini corn dogs, chicken strips, and clam chowder. Also ordered was a salad, French Dips, and a Veggie Burger. Nobody had leftovers, not because of portions, they were ample...but we devoured it all! Stopped by for lunch the other day on a recommendation, and had a pretty good time. Friendly wait staff, and a nice view of Morro Rock on the back patio. I ordered the Hot German Potato Salad (never had anything like it before) as a starter, and then had the pastrami on rye for my main dish. I thought it was all "fine", but I probably would have ordered the roll next time, as the rye bread (though tasty) didn't handle the a'jou very well. I'll definitely come back. I want to give this a 4.5/5 but that's not how it works, so I'm settling on a 4/5 for now with the potential to increase it next time, when I likely try something else. read more

So I'm here now, the line behind us and I'm ordering the Roast beef Dip and a side of the fries, with Coca cola, please. My buddy G ordered Corned beef on Rye bread. Service was to the point, ask question, order, pay and take a number placard to the table of your choice. I picked the "best table" Seating outside too but the wind wasn't cooperating. Served rather quickly and with a smile and friendly banter. The Best value for a sandwich I've seen in a long while, a good 7oz portion of beef, cooked tender and topped with my choice of cheese, Au Jus on the side made dipping fun. I'm a local and I've been coming to Hofbrau for years. At least once a month. Everyone talks about their carved roast beef sandwiches (which are great), but honestly, I'm here for the fish and chips. It's my absolute favorite in Morro Bay. The fish is lightly beer-battered and perfectly crispy, and the fries are beer-battered too which makes them extra good. The service here is always really good. Friendly, quick, and consistent every time I come in. You can tell they actually care about the locals and regulars. The view is unbeatable!!! Right on the water with Morro Rock in the background and seals popping up all the time. It's just such a nice, chill spot to eat and take it all in. Simple, classic, and always hits the spot.
