This was a really cute place inside. I had very high hopes for it since we don't have a lot of German options on the island. Unfortunately, it fell a little short. The food was extremely bland. I never use salt at the table and I found myself adding salt to my plate. It's really unfortunate because everything was cooked well it just really lacked flavor. We also ordered a beer flight and they were out of beer so instead of offering other options they just gave 2 of the same beers each instead of 4 different ones. Had I been told I would have gotten a different drink. It's still new and there are kinks to be worked out. It was just okay. I would give them another try and not totally write them off but I was disappointed. read more

This place bills itself as a German restaurant and while the menu has German and Austrian items on it, this is at best, very Americanized attempts at German cooking. I've eaten here twice; the first time, I had the Wienerschnitzel that was too heavily breaded and over cooked. The spaetzle was obviously pre-made and overcooked, making it much too chewy. The red cabbage (called Rotkohl in German) was bland and tasteless. For my second visit, I thought I'd try the Wurst platter and after seeing it set down before me, I immediately realized I'd made a mistake. The wursts had been cooked and then sliced and while this appeared similar to what is done in Germany when someone orders Currywurst, the fact that they'd been sliced up caused them to grow cold very quickly. It is unfortunate that the owners decided to name this place "Schnitzels" because their versions don't inspire confidence in their cooking or any desire to come back and give the place another look. I grew up eating my German grandmother's cooking that included really great chicken, veal and pork schnitzels, home-made spaetzle, Rotkohl with apple slices and raisins, and of course Sauerbraten (German pot roast). The meals I've had at Schitzels don't come close to my idea of good German fare and not even what is served in some of the German tourist traps in NYC. To make matters even worse, the prices for this middling dreck makes the experience even more insulting. If you want German food, look elsewhere because Schnitzels doesn't provide much of anything that resembles passable German cooking. read more

I have been here before and the food was good. However, I went here yesterday, and the service was unbelievably awful. My mother and I waited for over 10 minutes without a single waitress bothering to come to our table. They came to every other customer and returned to the kitchen in view on their phones. We even asked to be seated at the bar if it would be easier and quicker for them, but we were ignored anyway. These tables are right next to each other and still not one person asked us if we wanted water or food or anything at all. We eventually got up and left. It felt intentional like we were not welcome to this establishment and that we should not be there in their eyes. I don't know if it was that or pure laziness. But 0/10 never coming back again. We had been waiting all week to come to this restaurant and spend a nice fall day there together, but never again. read more

My husband and I have been to this resturant 3 times now (twice for breakfast and once for lunch). Every time the food is amazing, perfect portion, delicious and feeling satisfied. The service is great - we get Caroline and she is kind and attentive. We love the vibe in the restaurant - totally laid back, relaxing and welcoming. But my dish was chicken schnitzel which was deep fried with no taste it came with mushroom gravy no taste either the red v Cabbage was excellent the stringbean were not, so I would not recommend any schnitzel at all! Shame on Schnitzel I brought my 78 year old sister to your restaurant because she loves German food this past Sunday night at 6 pm. She is in a wheel chair and we wanted to make sure you could seat us. My wife talked to one of your staff named Erin and was told people at a good table for us just got their check and to wait in the car and she would let us know when available. We waited about 45 minutes and my wife reentered only to be told the table is taken and wait on line without even an apology. My wife thinks you didn't want someone in with a wheelchair. I was also at your restaurant the Monday after you opened and my meal came out with the wrong gravy, was cleaned off and put the right gravy on it cold and overdone. I chalked that up to Monday and new help but after today I will never go back and I will tell everyone how poorly we were treated. Again shame on you 32 year local resident. read more

We stopped in here for a quick early dinner. The atmosphere was authentic wood style pub with carriage wheel lights etc. The beer was ice cold on tap and went down super smooth. Wow amazing Loaded potato soup and the croc of French onion was outstanding. We will be back for the soups alone. We ordered the double hotdog and kraut with FRESH cut potato fries. With a delicious Curry ketchup and pickle. These Frankfurter's were massive and hit the spot. We also tried the hot pastrami sandwich. The Pastrami however left something to Be desired. I will leave that to the pastrami guys :). One huge hiccup was the Potato salad that came with the meal. It was Sally Sherman supermarket nonsense. Why not just make a vinegar based bacon and potato and onion German salad. Ur pub screams for it. We will be back to try the amazing looking sour brat ten the table next to us got. We decided to check the place out especially after coming back a few weeks ago from Munich. We were not disappointed. Nice German beer selection and others to please everyone. They had a beer cocktail list which looked and sounded good. Nice place, not too big and not too small. The service was great. The giant pretzel was awesome. Along with the cheese curds and pomme frites. The goulash was tomato based, it was good but not what we were expecting. We split 3 different schnitzels, the portions are huge and the food is delicious. We are looking forward to going back. And the left overs are already eaten. read more

Found this lovely restaurant on Yelp We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at this place. Service was excellent, attentive but not too pushy allowing us to enjoy a conversation during our meal. Three of us had schnitzel players, two chicken and one veal. Healthy portions and all were delicious. Our fourth had the wurst platter as his meal, more than enough food and also thought it was delicious. The variety of German beers available served as a great compliment to our meals. The four of us all had German family roots so we are a bit choosy about our German beers and food. Schnitzels was a nostalgic experience with the legit flavors of the home country! read more

You locals of Schnitzels are very lucky. 60 years ago German Restaurants were all over the Island, as they were in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Zums in Middle Village have come down a wee bit since the Covid, I have been a regular even with a drive over the past 60 years and I think I have had dinner in most German Restaurants in NYC, and Zums in my opinion rates as Tops. I grew up in Bay Ridge Brooklyn lived a few blocks from two German Restaurants. The Yorkville section of Manhattan was the capital for Germans and German Restaurants (can't guess how many times I have been there), yes all the way from Brooklyn) I was a good customer of Luchow's when it was great, took my Children there every Christmas) Stayed with them and the Pigs Knuckle until their closing) I have been to Germany all over except Hamburg used to say Zums was better. O"KAY OK Back to Schnitzels. Drove out from Manhasset yesterday to Schnitzels, We had two Dungels Dark, delicious !. She had the Jeagger Veal and I had the Sauerbraten with a side of Potato pancakes instead of mashed. The accompaniments were on the mark, again delicious. We liked the Pub feel and the service was great. Prices for today's inflation pretty fair, and I like they take credit cards without a sur charge. It is a drive so we can't just drop in but will be back. Some of the critics should read some of the review complaining about long waits, I wonder why. read more

Went in on a whim. Had a kind of Cheers vibe to it which was cool. Service was beyond slow, food was mediocre when it finally arrived. It wasn't terrible but it also wasn't something I would return for. If you're going to serve mustard at a German restaurant at least make your mustard in house, it's not that hard. Also, how do waitresses have on tank tops? Pretty sure that's some kind of health code violation. No need to see armpits reaching across the table. Heard a male waiter next to me being pretty unfriendly to a group of older women next to us that were asking genuine questions about the menu. He walked away and they were laughing at how rude he was. That was a turn off because this seemed like a nice group of women meeting for lunch. It was crowded but only about a 10-minute wait. Our waitress was Brittany and she was great. The food not so much. The bavarian pretzel was good, with the cheese sauce and mustard sauce. The potato pancakes were good but slightly overcooked. I had my mouth all set for the sauerbraten flatbread that was supposed to come with mashed potatoes, red cabbage, sauerbraten and a drizzle of gravy. It sounded great. Didn't see any mashed potatoes, only a few little white spots on the flatbread. Was that the mashed potatoes? Several (maybe 3 or 4) strands of red cabbage. Good amount of shredded sauerbraten but almost tasteless and extremely dry (last night's leftovers?) and I couldn't see or taste any gravy. Overall I'm very disappointed. Love the name and we were so excited to have a German Restaurant nearby, but eh....disappointed. Sauerbraten didn't really have that classic taste, more pot roasty, and the gravy wasn't the dark brown gravy I expected. The red cabbage tasted like it was out of a jar, and they scattered a little bit of spaetzle on the plate (I requested spaetzle instead of Mashed Potatoes). My husband's Wienerschnitzel had the same brown gravy as my Sauerbraten. Service was slow, place was packed on a Sunday night, very understaffed with no one at the door most of the time. Great time at Schnitzels! Highly recommend. The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere and lots of table and bar seating. The service was great, especially our bartender Antoine. He was so nice and helpful. Large beers for decent prices. Generous wine pours that were also very fairly priced. Same goes for the food. Super authentic and the menu has a great selection - pescatarian and vegetarian friendly! The mussels were amazing and as was the farmer's salad. Went here with three adults and two children, 15 and 6. Inside tables were full but we saw a couple finishing up outside having already received their check so we agreed with the hostess to add a seat and take the outside table. Out of complete spite, the scumbag at the table with an eerie resemblance to henreich himler and his wife who looked like a sea Robbin knew we were waiting for the table and openly refused to leave. He was begging for a confrontation but I choose to de-escalate with the children there and we were seated 40 minutes after we got there. Food was basic fare and my steak sandwich was inedible, large pieces of non-bitesize gristle. I requested the manager to stop by the table to discuss the incident and as the check was delivered he still did not show. Only the hostess knew how disgusting the behavior was she witnessed and apologized on behalf of the staff. If that is the clientele that is preferred I would strongly advise avoiding, including my SUNY Stony Brook colleagues, this restaurant. read more

if I could award negative stars for food I definitely would for this place. The weiner schnitzel was a poor quality veal cutlet deep fried to death. It was pretty much tasteless except for the faint taste of dirty oil. It was covered with a brown glop that resembled canned beef gravy but was also strangely tasteless. We went on Saturday around 4:30 after reading the review in Newsday. We love German food, especially Sauerbraten so we were excited to think a nearby place might be hopeful. This is a small place previously a deli. We don't go for ambiance which this location is just OK. It was very loud since it was packed. The food was Blah....no real taste, we had sauerbraten and veal schnitzel. All the food was delivered barely warm...actually, some was cold. Told the staff and mine was replaced but not much better. The Sauerbraten was pretty bland with barely the strong vinegar taste great sauerbraten should have. Red cabbage was good....potatoes and cauliflower were ok but not hot. Gravy was bland and not real sauerbraten gravy. Schnitzel was overcooked and dry. We still miss the Pine Grove Inn from Patchogue or the Bavarian Inn who both had the best Sauerbraten. A lot of beer options if you're a beer person. read more

I was extremely disappointed with the customer service at this bar and the way my brothers and I were treated. Went with my two brothers, and were seated at the bar. Minutes after being seated, we were asked for ID's (I'm 29 my other two brothers are 24 and 21) by the female bartender . We hand over our NYS ID's, she looks at them and still does not believe we're of legal drinking age. At first I thought she was joking, but quickly realized she was 100% serious. I was very confused as obviously the ID's were real. I told the woman, "call the cops if you want, the ID's are real" and she still believed we were underage. After 5 or so minutes of this back and forth, I tell her I'll call my mother to verify, who then confirmed our ages.
