I like saying the word "Schnitzels." It might just be the name of a German dish, but pluralizing it gives off a fun/inviting vibe which I guess you could say was the case when my wife and I visited this quaint restaurant a few weeks ago. Located in the Stony Brook Village is where you'll find Schnitzels which hides itself towards the end of a strip of stores. A bit unsuspecting from the outside for what feels like a cozy pub once you've entered through its doors. The place is small so a busier time than the somewhat early dinner we were having might have resulted in a wait, but luckily we snagged a table right away. What did take a little time was some aspects of service. I'm definitely not here to badmouth any server or person working as everyone seemed friendly, but things moved a little slow (from first being greeted, to getting our drinks, and for when the food came). Perhaps one more employee working at the bar or a bus boy might've remedied this, but also perhaps I'm nitpicking (the mind of a Yelper never rests, sorry). What's really important though is the food, and Schnitzels' menu of German grub is relatively vast. In an attempt to not over order, my wife and I shared a giant pretzel for an app to begin with (though the fried pickles sounded like a winner and were almost a secondary starter). This knitted monster came with some mustard and cheese sauce with each bite being light, doughy, and delicious. For the main course my wife went with a chicken schnitzel sandwich and I went with what they called "The Standard" which was a choice of wurst (brat for me) and came with potato salad on the side. Trying both I thought they were equally tasty with (honestly) my wife's being a little more flavorful. Don't get me wrong, mine definitely hit the spot, but almost seemed like an oversized hot dog then a bratwurst. Oh and that potato salad was legit. This was also washed down with a nice pint of Dunkel. If you're up for it, you can get "the boot" which, at a different time, I might've considered "wearing" in my hand, but that's for a tentative return trip. Overall, Schnitzels was a reasonably solid German spot worthy of checking out. I'll throw em four stars with some two thumbs up on certain aspects and a few sideways thumbs on some others that could probably be fixed or depends on what you're ordering. Cute restaurant located in a small strip mall area. We started with the potato pancakes that was a nice size enough for 2 . Served with a nice apple butter to dip. My fellow dinner had the loaded potato soup served with a nice bread stick to dip into the soup . He said it was delicious and hearty. We each had a signature dish schnitzel and felt the schnitzel was a tad dry .They had been there before and said it was great but maybe today it was just something off . Red cabbage was tasty , fresh vegetables really good and the Spätzle was plain as it usually is in general . What a disappointment. Food was incredibly BLAND! The only good thing in our meal was the cheese curds we had for appetizer. Service was so odd, she asked if we needed a jox while We were still eating out food. My drink was empty by the time I was done with apps, she never refilled my glass again. Really cute casual restaurant in a pretty plaza. The service was very prompt and friendly. They had a really nice selection of food. Everything from wraps to entrees. While shopping in the Stony Brook Village Center we came across a charming German restaurant called Schnitzels and enjoyed a little taste of German cuisine. Although small, the restaurant has a bar with seating along with seating for table service. In addition there's a small area devoted to live music on specific days. We started with the Wurst Platter featuring 4 wursts: knockwurst, bratwurst, krainerwurst and cheddar bratwurst served with pretzel bites, red cabbage and sauerkraut. The platter is a wursts lover dream. Dinner was the traditional German pork jagerschnitzel and wienerschnitzel platters both served with spatzle, red cabbage and seasonal vegetables. Both cooked to perfection with generous portions. Topped off dinner with the apple strudel and was pleasantly surprised to see the strudel was prepared with raisins which I've never received at other "authentic" German restaurants. Schnitzels has a nice selection of both wines and German beers and offers different events throughout the week including happy hours and lunch specials. We met one of the owners Storm, who happened to be our server, who was both welcoming and customer service oriented. It was a welcomed sight observing the owners serving tables and engaging with the customers. Schnitzels is a small community oriented authentic German restaurant offering great food and outstanding service. I've come here for lunch, dinner, and trivia. The service is excellent. I've had their wurst platter a few times. The Ferris wheel is fun. It comes with pretzel bites, mini pretzel dogs, fried pickles, fried cheese curds, fries, and schmand sauce. Anything with the schmand sauce is to die for. I love the fried cheese curds with schmand sauce from here. There are lots of beer on tap and the last time we went, they had a beer special that came with a pint glass you could take home. There are also plenty of desserts to choose from here. Parking is shared with nearby shops, such as Madison's Niche and Ann Taylor. It is a nice little area to shop in before dinner. There was space at the bar so we took a full advantage to get a drink and some appetizers. The sausage wurst platter was great! It comes with four different sausages, mustard, two types or cabbages and pretzel bites. The fried pickles is a memorable mention. And the beer is to die for. The mains did not disappoint as well. Schnitzels in Stony Brook is a great place to have dinner. Last night I had the steak sandwich; it was delicious. Their Fish and Chips are perfectly cooked, and the pastrami sandwich is incredible. In fact, everything I tried over the past few months has been great. One of my favorite apps is the Giant Pretzel that you can share. It comes out on a wheel with all different toppings. Since the portions are generous, I always bring home a piece of German Chocolate Cake and Black Forest Cake to have the next day. The service was perfect. Our waitress was attentive and quickly brought our drinks and food. We were there for trivia last night. My group always has a great time. And much to our surprise, we actually won! We ordered the sweet flatbread (blue cheese, caramelized onions, bacon, and chopped green apple), the Reuben, the fancy chicken wrap, and a farm salad with added salmon. The flatbread - tasty and the flavors worked really well together, just wish the bread was toasted a little more. The wrap & the Reuben - no complaints. Only think to note, is the sandwiches come with potato salad and a pickle, which the upcharge is $3 to get a small portion of fries instead... The salad - like others have said, the salmon was a bit dry. It looked nice on the outside, but the person eating it said it was probably cooked about a minute too long. We wanted pretzel first but didn't even have chance to say it. Again not issue but quickly went downhill once food came out and it came out like 5-7 minutes. Soup big chunk dried up cheese obviously reheated. Pretzel barely warm, potato pancakes tough and barely warm. Guy never asked how anything was. Was at other end of bar most of time. Was eating apps decided we weren't ordered anymore food. He came by quickly beers were like 1/4 full asked if we needed another beer said not yet but soon. Never came back ate all the food finished it. Sat with empty beer mugs and dirty plates front of us. Husband went bathroom left credit card nobody came by. I went bathroom came back nobody came by. Then the girl who started out appears behind bar again. I'm like can we please get the check. Got check fairly quick she walks away. Then we paid with cash. Overall disappointing awful customer service and the 1s time we were there spot on guy was great and that was a Saturday as well. The food is absolutely incredible! Brought me back to my German roots, to the days when I would sit with my nana and Oma eating brat together with pumpernickel bread as a child. I had ordered to loaded potato soup which blew me away! The cheese pull was insane and the chunks of bacon, brat & potatoes all complimented with flavor. This is honestly one of the best German restaurants I have ever gone to! You will not be disappointed with the ambiance, the food, & friendly fun service! Trust me when I say, the food is authentic. I also ordered the brat plate appetizer with a side of buttered pumpernickel bread. As well as the potato pancakes. Every item is so fresh, so good. We walked in and I see a long bar with some crazy German beers on tap. This space used to be a deli?? Now its a small German pub serving beer and pub food. We give our cell number to the hostess stand and wait on a table to be free. I ordered a Hofbräu on tap while reading the menu. The menu is substantial with lots of German delicacies. Did I say lots of German beers on tap? This is a huge selling point. The menu says potato pancakes but I know this dish as Kartoffelpuffer. It is small fried pancake made from potatoes, egg, and flour. The chef used the food processor on the potatoes and made them very creamy. The potato pancakes were served with apple butter. Crispy breaded pork cutlets served with rich mushroom gravy - that's Jägerschnitzel. And it's one of Germany's most popular and delicious foods. Jägerschnitzel is on the menu with Pork or Chicken. I ordered a Pork Jägerschnitzel and my wife ordered a chicken Jägerschnitzel. The trick is, order the gravy on the side! The mushroom gravy will make the cutlet soggy, that's a Bill S Pro tip for ya! The Jägerschnitzel was cooked perfectly and I loved the root vegetables on the side. This dish also came with Red Cabbage, truly a great meal in my little village of Stony Brook. A few months ago, I went to Zum Stammitsch in Queens with my in laws. Do you know what a pain in the ass it is to go to Queens from Stony Brook?
