I'm honestly not used to omakase being an option on Long Island. I usually head right to Manhattan if I'm looking for it. Sora is set in a strip mall in a nice area of Stony Brook. The area is nice enough that you get the feel it's going to be a high quality place. I arrived at 7pm for the 7:15pm seating. I was afraid I might be late if I walked in at 7:15pm. The hostess instead told me they weren't ready and to return at 7:15pm. Totally fair. I took a walk around the plaza. I was disappointed to arrive back promptly at 7:14pm, to find everyone else seated and I was now the last person. That's really not a good start for me. Would have thought she would hold everyone until 7:15pm, as that was what was communicated to me. Fine behavior for Chili's or Applebees, but come on, this is Omkase at a price point higher than many spots in NYC. The nice touch is your name printed on the menu, with all the courses available for you to see. The rice is a star here. It's large grained and fits the sushi quite well. Overall a good experience. I wish I had the option to include more wasabi though. I tend to like a bit more spice. Most places will offer more. The cubed ginger was excellent though. Just a few misses in my opinion, but most courses were pretty great. The oysters were huge! They were Pacific oysters and reminded me of the ones I had eaten in a Tokyo fish market. Sea Bream, Scallop and fatty tuna were the best courses for me. There was a cooked sea bass early on that I liked. Wagyu was generous. The biggest disappointment came in the form of the add-on courses. The chef informed the waitstaff that they simply didn't have enough Uni to make the add-on courses. The result was that only a few people would receive it. I opted out of it to give others a chance to try it and a few people did the same. They were only able to produce 4 bowls of that course, and we had about 11 people that night. You would think they might offer something to replace it... maybe an Otoro/Wagyu add-on... something. It's annoying that only some people could have the add-on course. The seating issue and the lack of ingredients (or impromptu course) for the offered add-on was a big miss. At the $125 price point, it's more expensive than a good deal of spots in NYC and the menu is a stretch to reach that value. I didn't leave full, which is sometimes the case with Omakase. The Uni bowl some were able to get did look like it might have been the tipping point to feel full though. The inside is nice. The waitstaff is attentive. There was little to no interaction with the chefs. The waiter explained each course, which I guess is fine, but it removed that element where you could have fun with the chef. It's nice to have an Omakase option close by, but I'm on the fence about returning.

My sister and I came here during New Year's Day. I have been to an omakase restaurant in the city once in the past, but have had my eye on this place so I'm happy we got to finally try it. We were really impressed, the service was great. Upon entering they hang up your jackets. We were with two other parties, it was a very intimate setting. To drink I got a glass of the Riesling, which was excellent. The chef was very skilled and took the time to explain the fish being used. Everything tasted fresh and many of the nigiri's melted in your mouth like butter. We really enjoyed the Kumamoto oysters, my sister and I aren't the biggest fans of oysters, however we really enjoyed all of the flavors in this one. I wish they offered dessert, but overall the experience and the quality of the fish was totally worth it.

Service - Wonderful. The attention to deal and the attentiveness of the staff were just wonderful. They explained everything and gave us a rundown of everything we had as it came out. Food - Omakase - since the menu changes everyday, the chef is giving you the best they have to offer every single meal. I would highly recommend getting the extra item they have on the back of the menu but get it to share with whomever you go with. The original selection is enough to make you full for the meal. On to my next adventure...

Best sushi I ever had on Long Island. Service was impeccable Ambiance was low-key, intimate, and overall, lovely. Be ready for a very expensive bill..like over $500 for two people. Need to make reservations well in advance. Can't show up to the place and expect it to be open. They open specifically for people who booked a reservation. Limited seating for people who reserved. Definitely for food lovers. Took my sushi game up by 1,000 levels

Best sushi experience I ever had in Long Island. The food was simply clean fresh and impactful. Service was attentive and not intrusive. They catered to your every need without being too aggressive. The perfect balance. Chef Osan and his team knows exactly what tickles your fancy when it comes to food and service. First off this is a sushi counter experience only no tables so be ready to get intimate. You will be seated with your personalized menu an explanation of each dish! Go for the Sake pairing you won't be disappointed. You will be seeing me there again !

I don't know where to begin. Sora exceeded all my expectations. The staff, the food, the atmosphere, everything was exactly right. I appreciated so many personal touches they offered. From the staff standing by to assist or answer any question, to the thoughtful setup for an amazing experience enjoying nigiri. This is a delightfully special outing, with an evolving menu so you can return time and again. Watching the chefs is a treat. The sake dispenser is a conversation piece. The 10-seat restaurant guarantees an intimate experience. Don't hesitate to make a reservation.

Absolutely surreal experience. New Head Chef Yama was absolutely incredible. Took the time to explain every course and was incredibly friendly and personable. If you want your entire world-view on sushi to be changed, then come here. Couldn't recommend enough.

This was the best omakase experience I have ever had in my entire life. From the moment you walked in, there was a wonderful vibe to the entire restaurant and the small intimate bar and open kitchen gave it a homey feel. The waiter was incredibly nice and explained every single dish to us making us feel special. Every single course kept us on our toes and made us just want more. The food was incredible and the nigiri was wonderful. I can't wait to come back and do it all again.

Amazing from start to finish! Excellent sushi, great service and very personal and ambiance is beautiful! It's worth every penny

Sora is a must-try. The chef really made the experience--engaging, attentive, and clearly passionate about the food. Every dish was on point, fresh, and packed with flavor. It's up there with some of the best omakase in NYC. Easily a 5/5. We will definitely be back!

Wow! Outstanding ambiance, service, and of course the food! This is top notch. The quality here of true Japanese food cannot be beat. The entire staff was friendly, attentive, and interactive. Kudos to the wonderful and kind Chef. An experience like no other!!!

We read a recent review where someone proclaimed the owner to be nasty & unfriendly (sure, I am paraphrasing). Those types of reviews are generally emotionally charged and written by plebs I find. More on that toward the end. Pulling up to a rather unassuming east end Long Island small shopping plaza drenched in rain; opening the door, you are taken back to a semi rustic and dim interior. Perfectly elegant in its bucolic charm- with nice lounge music playing. It is a sit where one likes atmosphere. This is meant with the utmost of respect and candour. We were greeted kindly by the proprietoress (Jacqueline), and handed pleasantly robust binders with the wine list and food. Deciding to treat this in the more European café type, we had glasses and charcuterie. I, the Sagrantino, and her the Kerner. Jacqueline was vocally pleased with our interesting choices. The night drew on, more wine ensued, more food, multiple conversations, and I completed reading through each page and wine choice...finding much to be recognised and appreciated (Kirwan, Moric, Georg Breuer to name but a few) At the end of the night, I asked Jacqueline to pick an appropriate nightcap. She not only delivered, but gave us a wonderful story including the provenance and her experiences - ultimately, the word genius came up more than once. To wit, there was nothing here but an exceptional experience with a like-minded wine enthusiast. I felt welcomed and in the frith of old kin. Nasty, belligerent, dullard atmosphere- indeed not. There's a small lot that's free and you can park on Jennings. (sorry residents). We went on NYE so had to park several blocks away. No biggie. The inside is dark and cool with a city-vibe. Ample bar space and 1-4 tops an some banquet seating that lets you look out over the street. We were greeted right away by what turned out to be our server and seated promptly by the windows (we had a reservation). Also greeted by a gentleman that we think might have been her dad. The young lady hustled all night and managed the crowd well. We never waited too long for her to check in on us and she was very helpful with selecting wine and clarifying menu items. That being said, THIS IS A SMALL PLATES JOINT. People expecting full-sized portions should adjust their expectations accordingly. We did, however, order the Trastavere seafood platter (medium) which came as a tower and seemed impressive. Two types of oysters (large and medium) were presented; briny and fresh and pretty damned tasty. There was also a ceviche and tuna tartare that was, unfortunately, a bit unremarkable, as was the shrimp cocktail (though the shrimps were pretty hefty). The American "black caviar" was a nice way to commemorate the meal. Nutty with a pop of salinity but maybe something you can skip. We meant to order the Carne e Formaggi but got the Gamberetto instead which was fine as it was pretty tasty nonetheless (made with shrimp but it almost tasted like smoked salmon). Virgola Manhattan was good but pretty standard. Follow-up drink of dirty Manhattan was blissfully salty and cold. But back to the menu: we are unsure if they have an actual kitchen back there which would also explain the small plates concept and oyster and chilled fish options. The bruschetta was tasty, as mentioned, but it seems like they cut and toasted the bread and topped it with the crudo. The other bruschetta options featured ingredients from other menu items that could be re-purposed for multiple dishes. Smart but expect this. We plan on returning and trying the charcuterie board (mix and match cheeses and meats) and some cocktails. Overall, a nice night out and a nice option for dining and drinking around Patchogue. Cheers!

Plenty of space to dine and watch from any angle. There's even a back patio next to the parking area where you can toss the beanbag and play some outdoor games. Serving mainly bar food and casual dining options here. The menu online is very different from what we were given. Think sandwiches and wraps. With a small selection of entrees like grilled shrimp and steak (generous portion) or burgers. Started with the French Onion Soup as it was a cool evening and I wanted something warm for starters. It was quite salty and it did have plenty of onions. Meh Hubby got the steak and shrimp I mentioned before, generous portion on the steak. My son got the steak tips with mashed potatoes. He did enjoy that. My daughter opted for the grilled cheese with bacon and a side of fries which was actually on the kids menu. Not found on the regular menu presented. I had the French Dip (meat was very chewy and the dip was actually more of the onion soup!) This came with a side of fries but I asked to change it to tater tots since it was an option. They were a little mushy, breaking down with each stab of the fork. So afterwards I realized we didn't get the wings or the burgers they claim to be the best in town, but we noticed the other patrons got wraps and wings. Looked quite saucy. Next time.
