I was really excited to see this place open. I've been to a small handful of German restaurants and have always liked the food. Unfortunately this place really fell short in quite a few areas and I don't see it lasting here. -Giant Bavarian Pretzel: 3/5, figured you have to order one of these bad boys at German restaurant right? It was mediocre at best. It was fresh and hot out of the oven but still managed to taste stale. The beer cheese and mustard were good but the pretzel itself was eh. -Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich: 3.5/5, as my S.O put it, "this looks like a Wendy's 4 for 4 sandwich". The bun was 3 times the size of the actual sandwich contents. The chicken was super thin, and it really lacked flavor. Thankfully I had beer cheese leftover from the pretzel so that saved it somewhat. Rating it at a 3.5 and this was the best item ordered of the day. -Schmandschnitzel Chicken: 2.5/5, again chicken was super thin, dry, and lacked flavor. The green beans it was served with were very bland and basically tasteless Not impressed at all with this one. Overall I have to say we all left pretty disappointed. The price you pay is FAR overpriced for the food you're getting. Our server was very nice and helpful, the ambiance really didn't feel "right" for what it should've been. Classic rock music playing the whole time and a few paintings on the wall. For me there's really no redeeming qualities here that would entice any of us to come back. Finally was able to get to this place. First time was a two hour wait, this time was only 40 minutes. My husband and I were in the mood for drinks and food to share. We ordered the big pretzel, margarita flatbread with chicken, and we split the cheeseburger and fries. Everything was yummy especially the flatbread, that was my favorite. Atmosphere was nice too, good music, and good vibes. I would highly recommend you get here early if you don't want to wait. Service was excellent. It's October. Y'all need to GET IN HERE QUICK because there is SCHWEIN'SHAXE on the menu and IT IS EXCELLENT! ! For those of you who aren't familiar with it: This is a pork shank. It is prepared various ways, but the superior method is roasting, preferably followed by a deep-fry to crisp the skin. If you know the delicacy, I have had them in Munich, at the Hax'nbauer, which set my standard. The best I've had stateside was at Schmankerlstube in Hagerstown, MD, and the worst I've had was a local place that shall remain un-named, because they committed the abomination of boiling their schweinhaxn. If your kitchen boils meat, you just gave up on caring about joy, and life, and decency, haven't you? Yes. Yes you have. I am excited to say that Schnitzel's took their own tack and delivered a juicy pork shank that must have been marinated in order to give it its depth of flavor, then roasted it so that it wound up being fairly lean, and developed a crispy skin seasoned well with spices. This was a nice compromise on the "tough" fried skin (imagine a shank covered with fried pork rind. It can be a challenge to saw through with a table knife) and provided complementary texture. Also appreciated was the size; these are smaller haxn, about softball size, and you'll get a generous portion of lean meat but not leave the table feeling sluggish. This dish was accompanied by mashed potato, a small side of red cabbage, gravy and sauteed asparagus. The asparagus was perfectly done, tender but not mushy. The cabbage was apple-sweet and not too sour. Nothing was overly seasoned, and even with soup to start, I ate everything on the plate and was able to take a three-mile walk shortly afterwards. The first time I went here I had French onion soup which was surprisingly bland. On one hand, I applaud the chef(s) for not over-salting food, but on the other, it tasted like the butter and sherry and Worcestershire sauce were absent. This time I tried the Loaded Baked Potato Soup and WOW. What a perfect infusion of smoky flavor from the sausage. Creamy texture, perfectly seasoned. Accompanied by a perfectly soft, salted pretzel stick. This one is a winner! The ambiance is casual and hasn't been "Schwartzwald"ed to death. There are some decorative cuckoo clocks and pictures of Bavarian scenes, but no one traipsing around in dirndls or lederhosen. And no polka music. You're not being whisked off to Germany; you're at a well-thought out and cozy restaurant and bar in Stony Brook paying homage to German food but combining it with contemporary items favored by locals. Service is perfect; the waitstaff have been cheerful and able to explain what the menu items are like, can make informed suggestions about beer and wine, and they strike a good balance between hard-to-flag-down and hovering. The Specials menu for Octoberfest is definitely worth a look and will provide some difficult but satisfying choices. I hope you'll try the haxn and love it as much as I did, AND.. I hope Schnitzel's will keep it on the menu year-round! read more

This was our 3rd visit and we are fans. It's always a crap-shoot if you'll have to wait for a table. The place is small. But once you're in, it's all good. Our waitress last night, Hannah, was very friendly and attentive. The potato pancake appetizer was really good. Deep fried, very creamy and tasty, and the apple butter tasted just like good apple sauce. We had a very non-German dinner of an eggplant pesto sandwich. It was kind of Germanified by calling it eggplant schnitzel, but it was really delicious. I felt like the mushrooms were the kicker - really put it over the top. Several classic german style beers available and you can get a liter at a time in a boot glass which was very fun! The food is where i deducted some stars. All of the sides and appetizers were good and i would definitely come back for a beer and some pretzels, a soup or something else small. The larger plates lacked flavor and depth. I may have higher standards for the food since i grew up eating home cooked german food so i would definitely try everything for your self but most of our entrees were not great. It started off good with a very sweet waitress Casey and the beer on tap was good. Wish I could say the same for the rest. Ambiance is not great. Ordered veal Schnitzel which came out fast telling me it wasn't cooked to order. The veal was tough with breading falling off, broccoli was cold, red cabbage had a sharp vinegar taste and schpetzel didn't look nor taste homemade. It looked liked chopped spaghetti... way too thin, We also tried the Black Forest cake....not good ... it had some weird cream cheese vanilla frosting instead of fresh whipped Cream. Relatively new place and obviously popular (very crowded when I went in, long wait). Wanted to check it out so I called in to order 'The Standard' as takeout for lunch, with knockwurst. Huge disappointment, hardly worth the price. The knockwurst came with a dab of mustard and a dab of kraut on a squishy yellow bun, a small pickle spear, and a teeny side of potato salad. The pickle was okay but the potato salad was just your average deli salad with sugar added. The knockwurst tasted like a generic ball park frank. Its skin was so tough it had to be peeled off. Boar's Head makes a much better knockwurst! Too bad, but I won't be back. read more

Just ate at Schnitzel's for the first time, the food and service were both excellent! This is a modern American gastropub that serves German food. I saw some people said in their reviews from two months ago that the food here was under-seasoned, but I can update that they seem to have taken care of this problem. No complaints about my reuben, which had both corned beef AND pastrami. Most restaurants only have one or the other, or will make you choose. Having both meats is definitely the way to go, it just adds extra flavor for sure. I personally prefer Russian dressing over mustard, but this is a minor quibble. The soft pretzel bites with beer cheese were also great. My wife got the chicken rahmschnitzel, which came in a white cream sauce. She said it was fantastic - what a treat to have four kinds of schnitzel preparations, each of which can be made with pork, chicken, veal or eggplant, for a total of 16 possible combinations! There's an opportunity there for somebody to be the first to try them all! I should point out here that the "other" German restaurant on Long Island, Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square, lists 7 kinds of schnitzel on their menu, but then when you arrive and inquire about this, only two or three are available on a typical day, for some reason. But, what can you expect from a German restaurant that doesn't even know how to spell their own name? (It should be PlattDEUTSCHE, but it's not) The other common complaint seems to be that Schnitzel's isn't like Zum Stammtisch in Glendale, but why should it have to be? Z.S. is great, sure, but it's a throwback German restaurant run by authentic Germans, and they dress the servers in dirndls and lederhosen, like Bavarian peasants from the 1800's. Do we expect servers in an Italian restaurant to dress like Renaissance painters, or servers in a Greek restaurant to wear togas? That would be ridiculous... Why can't Schnitzels be allowed to be its own thing, which is a modern pub that serves great German food, beer in those boot-shaped glasses, along with plenty of references to the fictional German restaurant seen in the movie "Beerfest"? (Which was Schnitzengiggles, but hey, close enough...) I know that after our lunch, I definitely want to come back and try their dinner menu and a beer or two. Dined here this past weekend; Hubby and I shared the Schnitzel's Poutine App. For Entrees, he had the Pork Shank, and I had the Pork Jagerschnitzel. We were very excited to try a new German restaurant, but unfortunately this place completely misses the mark. We arrived before 4pm on a Sunday, the hostess told us we would t be able to order entrees, as they aren't served before 4pm. We asked if we could have drink and wait, after some discussion ( which seemed weird, it was about 3:45) our waiter came over and said it was ok. For an appetizer we ordered the German poutine it was ok but we still were hopefully about our main entrees. Which were the Rouladen and Saurbraten, both of which were completely bland and disappointing. The German beer was good and the sparkling Riesling was nice and dry. The service was slow but we expected that as the place is new. The atmosphere was great and had a German gastro pub vibe to it. As for the food, we were not impressed at all. My husband and I ordered the beer cheese soup and Schnitzels' Poutine as appetizers; the Bratbread and the The Schnitz as our entrées. For some reason his entrée came first then the appetizers 15 mins later, this wasn't the main issue. The issue was the quality and taste of the food.The beer cheese soup was watery and the taste was just off, the poutine was okay but nothing great (gravy was tasteless), the flatbread my husband ordered was undercooked and chewy, my sandwich was the best part of the meal. Sad to say we were not impressed at all and left unsatisfied but may give another chance once they've been open for a while. Edit: I've been to many German restaurants in NY, Zum Stammtisch being the best. So .... My SIL tells me about a great German place she found completely by accident. Seriously I study posts and reviews and she finds this by happenstance. Happily, I'm luckily the recipient of this amazing discovery. Dinner was fantastic - sauerbraten so tender it melts in you mouth (I assume since no one would share a bite ), my schnitzel was tasty and moist, the portion was large enough for two. Pork chop was perfectly cooked which isn't easy given how thick it was. All in all -/ a great place to try. read more

I brought friends for lunch on a Friday afternoon at 1 pm. Restaurant was pleasantly full and a quiet crowd. I ordered the schnitzel sandwich which was thin and crispy as it should. My friend ordered the same and his wife ordered the burger. Food and service was very good , but sandwich was missing something in a dressing to add flavor and or moisture. Nice place, good atmosphere the staff accommodating. Now read other reviews so i had to try myself, best i can say is that the food was unremarkable. Other Yelpers used Zums in Glendale to compare it to, Zums being an exceptional German restaurant. Schnitzel's doesn't even come close, onion soup very lack luster. Wife had The Wurst Platter. They were all very good, supplied by Karl Ehmers which is an excellent butcher. However the rest of the plate, what little there was, was boring. Red cabbage on both our dishes was luk warm tasted like it came from a jar. At least doctor it up a bit and they give you a tiny tin cup of what i assume was Guldens mustard, how about a nice grainy German mustard. Jeez. I had the Schnitzel with the white sauce, forgive me i forgot the name maybe cause it made absolutely no impression upon me. Now I've been to quite a few German eateries in my day but this is the first time that i saw no, that's right NO Potato Pancakes on the menu. WTH! But, but there maybe a silver lining to all of this. This was our first time at this new establishment located in the heart of Stony Brook Village. I was excited to see something new come to this location that served German cuisine. We usually drive all the way to the Village Lantern in Lindenhurst for our German fix. Overall, we had a good experience and will return, but I do think there is some tweaks that need to be made. When we walked in I was met with a musty smell. The ceiling was dripping with water either from a leak or air conditioning issue. Eventually, we got use to the smell but I would absolutely address this issue. The decor is very dark and the entire place needs a facelift aesthetically. I think when these problems are corrected it will give their guests a better dining experience. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and gave us good suggestions. We ordered beers, cider and wine, all delish. We started with the wurst appetizer platter and everything was very delicious. I loved the red cabbage. I had the Schmandschnitzle which had a good sour-cream/caramelized leek sauce. My only suggestion is to not overcook the Schnitzel. It was slightly on the well done side. My husband had the Jagerschnitzle and again a bit overcooked and dry. He asked for extra sauce which they kindly brought. My friend had the pork chop which he enjoyed, and my other friend had the Schnitz sandwich which she liked too. Overall, a good experience and welcomed addition to the neighborhood. read more

Normally, before saying "never again" I will give a restaurant a second try. No need to do that for Schnitzels. I can say it after one visit ... NEVER AGAIN. We arrived yesterday (Sun) at 3pm and got lucky. The restaurant and bar was filled, but we got the last available table. Then the problems started. My friend specifically wanted to go there to try the Sauerbraten and I was getting the fish and chips, but they weren't available. We were told to ignore the entire "entre menu" as it was only available after 4pm. OK, so we ordered 2 potato soups, which were at best mediocre, lacking any seasoning (but the side pretzel was good). Since we couldn't order an entre, we ordered 3 Hungarian Goulash from the daily specials menu, and a Rueben. It was by far the WORST Goulash I've ever had. It was nothing more than some noodles in a bowl with a thin brownish broth. Absolutely no vegetables, and only a few small pieces of beef, but the worst part was the seasoning ... there was none! WE added salt and pepper but it didn't help. The Goulash had absolutely no taste whatsoever. Then there was the Reuben. It was a fat sandwich. Clearly the meat was never even trimmed. They also have a huge beer menu, and I ordered a simple lager, which was served with no head. As I watched other beers being poured I noticed none had a head. I can only assume the glasses were not "beer clean" which is surprising since they clearly serve a large variety of beer.
