Visited September 27, 2025. Needed to get a different colored bulb for a night light. They had a few colors and the owner was nice enough to just sell one as opposed to the whole package. While waiting for assistance, heard him give advice to a customer which seemed super helpful. Feel like you get the kind of personal attention you might not receive at a bigger retailer. Needed to get house keys cut, as previous copies did not work properly (made elsewhere in the area). I was told that they guaranteed them, and rarely, if ever, had keys returned that did not work. New keys worked perfectly. Service was friendly, fast, and helpful. Friendly service and greeting upon entry. Classic hardware store set up and style. You can smell that classic home wood smell from a place that's been around forever. Prices just right. If they don't have something they'll refer to a place that has it. Businesses no longer do this, but shows you that good customer service is job one. read more

This is a special place, family owned since forever and feels like walking into a piece of history. Just the fact that this exists makes me happy about living in West Orange. The brothers that own the place know a bit (a lot?) about everything and can give you advice and help you with your purchase as well. I've found my new hardware store. Everything Nancy W. says times two. This is more than a store, it is a great neighborhood resource. From the first time we walked in more than seven years ago as new W.O. homeowners, we knew we had found something special. I went in looking for a sump pump for my basement. Instead of selling me a new one, they told me how to fish around for the little rock that was blocking my existing one. Problem solved, cost $0. We love the Schneider brothers, and even though we do end up at H.D. sometimes, we would be lost without this shop. read more

I appreciate a local business that's family owned, but my experience here was less than stellar. In short, I came here to purchase a replacement handle and locking mechanism for my sliding patio door. Without much experience in the matter, I was hoping for all the guidance I could get. On the contrary, however, the gentleman that assisted me was quick to point out that he couldn't help me and immediately started spewing out prices for shipping the piece out to get evaluated and then replaced. So if I want to replace the lock on a door, I have to leave a hole in said door for several days while the piece gets shipped somewhere to get evaulated? Seems asinine when you truly think about it. In the middle of my questions regarding the part and process for "evaluation" he stepped away to take a phone call without even excusing himself. I thanked him for the effort, took the broken pieces I brought with me, and left. I then took a trip up to Home Depot, found the replacement parts I needed myself, and was able to fix my sliding door in a matter of minutes. I suppose it's possible that I wasn't fully explaining the issue while I was at Schneider Hardware, but the dismissive nature and condescending attitude of the gentleman that "helped" me was off putting. I wanted to avoid a big box location so I could contribute to a family owned and local business, but I doubt that I will be returning to at least this location after my experience today. read more

There is nothing quite like the smell, the friendliness and knowledge of Schneiders. For an average size store it always seems to have an even greater range of stock than the big box stores especially if it is a slightly older item. Free parking is right next door. read more

I'm not from the area but my son and I found our way here while looking for another hardware store listed (as closer to his house) on my phone and we're glad we did. You rarely find a store anywhere like this and while we were only getting keys made for my son's off campus house in South Orange, the gentleman running the store (Roger) was extremely nice and hospitable as we were talking about the history of the store and the area. I enjoyed just looking around at the inventory this store has as well as some of the nostalgic photos on the walls and those that Roger showed us as well. I'm sure at some point my son will need something else for his place and now he knows where he'll get great caring service. read more

If you need anything in the way of hardware,whether for your home or business, you can probably find it here. This is a small jam-packed store. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. If you can't find it here it doesn't exist (just kidding). If they don't have what you're looking for they will direct you. This is an independent family-owned hardware store that is a landmark on Main Street in West Orange for decades. Go here for the stock, the staff and to keep family-owned small business in business and support local economies. This kind of store is a dying breed in a world of big box stores like Home Depot. Let's keep it going another 100 years! Note: they have their own lot for parking where it is free as opposed to the metered parking on street. It's a bit narrow for a wheelchair, but I suspect that if you call ahead they will find a way to accomodate you! Prices are very reasonable. If you want, take a stroll around Main Street. You can eat in one of the many restaurants serving delicious food from all over the world. Wander over to the Thomas Alva Edison Laboratories National Historic Site and maybe sign up to see the labs as well as his beautiful home recently restored in Llewellyn Park. If young children are with you, there's Lafayette playground on the corner of Park and Main which was recently restored. A few blocks further and you can go inside wonderful West Orange Library. read more

Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They always have the parts I need and can explain how to use them if I'm unsure. Just this morning, the trap under my sink broke. I brought the broken parts in and he set me up with everything I needed to make the repair myself and gave me a detailed explanation of how to install everything, how tight to make the joints, etc. Big chain hardware stores can offer lower prices (on lower-quality parts), and a greater selection of fixtures. But when I come to Schneider, I get what I need faster because of the great service, and I wind up spending less money because I'm only buying what I need. Love this place! read more

What a fabulous resource! Thoughtful, intelligent, sincere merchants who do their level best to help you. Their motto must be "Your client's interest must be above your own" as they direct you away from solutions that you came in with that are pricey and unnecessary. Furthermore, if you have a stubborn problem, ask them for their help. They have helped me more than a dozen times. I give them my unqualified approval and encourage my neighbors to patronize them. Went to Home Depot for a toilet tank washer. Took the original worn out one with me for comparison. The one I was given by the sales person ended up being incorrect. I found this out after many unsuccessful installation attempts. Went to Schneider Hardware and they not only knew which tank washer I needed and had it for sale, they also gave me good advice on installation. read more
