Stopped in on a Sunday morning to try to do a plumbing repair on my kitchen sink drain and was immediately greeted by the gentlemen minding the pastry table and Jerry, the store owner jumped right in when I showed him what I needed. Not only did he have the drainpipe part I needed, he even took the time to cut it to size based on the old piece I brought with me. He showed me how to position the pieces and even what direction the washers need to go in the compression fittings. First time stopping by here and the customer service was so friendly. My cousin and uncle stopped by to pick up something small for a project they were doing at my house. They wanted a piece of wood, but the store doesn't carry wood. The person working there was so nice. They went back and looked for something in their scrap pile that would work and gave it to them free of cost. So glad we discovered this gem right in our backyard essentially. Went to Major Hardware looking for a missing screw for an ornate door handle. Had the handle with me. Showed the young man who had asked me if a needed help. Showed him the handle. "Oh, you need a set screw." Went over to the screws and tested a few trying to find the correct size. Called over to the owner (I believe) to make sure he was doing it correctly. Owner told him to use an actual screw to ensure the size was correct. He did. Had the right size. Got one extra set screw and the right Allen wrench. If you're just not sure what you need, this is the place to go. They will happily help you and most likely have what you need. They are my first stop now for plumbing, hardware, etc. Nice people happy to help you. read more

Could this place be for real or was I dreaming? Astonished when I went today to return item that had stopped working (prob my fault frankly) sans packaging or receipt--and the owner (Whose name is apparently Jerry) made it so incredibly painless. Replaced immediately with same per my request. You can not imagine how grateful I was. First, because I'm a bit disabled right now, about 75 lbs and getting around or stress of having to explain (dreading) is tiring. Yet walked into this old fashioned shop and didn't have to do any of that (I do not do big box stores). No rolled eyes or questioning looks. No awkward pleading needed. It was, without a doubt, the most pleasant shopping experience (in and out 2 minutes with replacement)--I may have ever had. I don't do reviews here but had to--for this place. When I was a kid my father used to take me to the hardware store, it was an experience I will never forget. There are not many real hardware stores around these days, we are very fortunate to have one in our town. The owner know his stuff, his staff is courteous and helpful, and the prices are reasonable. I could spend an hour in a big box store searching or two minutes getting what I need at at Major Hardware. Parking is a breeze, and if you buy something heavy the awesome workers will carry it to your vehicle. By the way, the owner knows everyone by name! Once again, Jerry & his gang have saved me time, money - one outfit, the closest scooter store, wanted $142 for "looking" at my Pride Scooter - not fixing it, mind you - just figuring out what's wrong. There are no repair shops close by for scooters. WHAT TO DO??? Try Jerry at Majer Hardware in Cedar Grove. So attentive & helpful. As a widow I probably have more need of him than ever & he has never disappointed me. I cannot say enough good things about him & his staff. They figured out I needed a new fuse. I didn't even know there WAS a fuse. Diagnosed, replaced & scooter put back in my car in 20 minutes. And the fuse? That costs $2. Need I say more. In addition to that, he's down the street from where I live. 5 stars, or whatever is the most you can give. read more

i hate going to hardware stores but sometimes i HAVE to go to one and this one is my 1st choice. they sell some really nice looking hatchets and i swear, one day I'm gonna buy one. i came on here a few weeks ago. i needed a pair of keys made. two keys that looked exactly the same, one for the front door to my sister's beach house, one for the back door. i decided to get a special key made to differentiate the front door from the back door. so i walk up to the counter and tell the guy there what i want. and he's like, "you smell so good." so i say thank you. he asks me what perfume i have on. i laughed and said the name of it's really embarrassing but disclose the information anyway. it's called Dead Sexy. and he says WELL THAT'S TRUE. dude can i get some keys made?! i told him i wanted the leopard print key to be the one to open the front door and he said well which one is the front door key they're identical and i said i don't know man you got a 50/50 chance to get this right and if you do i'll give you a 5 star yelp review. he did it. read more

i make it a point to support local businesses in town however,i will never do bus.with this hardware again. after dropping two screens to be rescreened and pull tabs placed in the spline (necessary for screens of this type)i waited a few weeks without hearing anything.when i then called i was given an excuse.this went on a few weeks so i personally visited the store and was told each time that the screens weren't back or the person wasn't there but they would call. they didn't..two + months i get a call the screens are done.i go to pick them up and the worker accidently cuts the screen!! i tell him without being mad that "it's not the end of the world.but there were no tabs on the screen." making them useless.i decide i will just pay for them and try to fabricate my own tabs get a call the next day that the screens can be picked up ?? i call first approx.9:30 am and was told by the manager jerry guarino that he was very busy but would call me....2:30pm approx.again,no call so i go to the store.jerry asked what i want and i say my screens.he goes and gets the screens and still no tabs.,frustrated but calm i explaned the need for the finger hold point (tab or in spline) he insists there not needed then changes his story when i ask about the spline. he .... takes the screens and goes behind the counter and ...cuts them with a razor knife....... saying here are your screens no charge... i swear i had never once raised my voice in over two and a half months. i was beyond mad but thought ...this guy has issues!! so much for supporting major hardware supply 589 pompton ave,cedar grove,nj. read more

I have been a customer of Major Hardware for years. Initially as strictly a consumer but now as a member of the trade ( I do HandyMan Work). When I started as a handyman, I usually went to the big highway discount stores BY DEFAULT thinking that I would get variety, lower prices, and better service. Was I ever wrong.... I was working a job in Cedar Grove and decided to go to Major Hardware .... I really did not have the time to go to Totowa Home Depot. To my delight, the item I needed was within a few cents of the HD price and I saved time and gas as well. Over this past year, Gerry, Pete, Bill, and Randy have become trusted advisors and have helped me grow my local handyman business substantially. All they ask for in return for their referrals to Rick Dilley Handyman, is that I call their customer, show up when I say I will and do the job as if it were my own home. I ALWAYS ask them for anything I need for a job (first right of refusal) and then if they don't have it or cannot get it when I need it, I will shop elsewhere. Rarely have I not been able to get a piece or part that I need from Major. When the must order it usually arrives the same or next day...what more can I ask for? Oh and forgot to mention, they are there from 9AM to 1PM on SUNDAY, and there is always a box of JOE, a bunch of pastries, bagels, and cookies and orange juice. For local parents, I suggest that you take your kids there and show them what a REAL hardware store is like. read more

Will not be going back. Brought in a set of knives to be sharpened on a Monday. Was told they get picked up and I would get a call, usually takes 2 days. I didn't get a call, but that's not unusual in today's day and age. I went in on Saturday to pick them up (I got a new set and was giving these to my son for his first apartment). They couldn't find them at first. The man who appeared to be the manager/owner (I left the knives with him on Monday) found them - they had never been sent out! Considering I was leaving in 2 days to drive my son to VA, I couldn't leave them again. All I got was, "Sorry." read more
