And they always have a smile (and a candy bowl at the counter to make sure everyone knows this is the community hardware hub). We moved to the area about a year and a half ago. During the move, we lost a screw to my daughter's crib. It wasn't essential but a corner of her crib mattress sagged. Every few months, it would bug me and I would take a screw from one of the other corners to Home Depot, ask for help, be told that it was a weird / specialty size and to go online but I was never clearly told what to look for online. I came here as a last ditch effort, hoping someone would help me and they did. Within 5 minutes, I was given a couple options to try at home (I asked for a couple since each screw was only a few cents). Skip the big box stores where the unhelpful sales reps won't be able to deliver the same level of advice as the guys who work here. Love this place and the people who work here. They always have what I need and give great advice. You can come in with ANY home improvement problem and they'll direct you to exactly what you need and how to use it and give you handy tips. It's such a big help for me since I'm not too handy and just learning the home improvement basics since buying my first house. They really know their stuff. I also love how you can buy single nails and other items instead of big packages, which is great since I rarely use the whole pack and end up with a random assortment of nails and screws around the house. On a recent visit to Montclair we popped in here to replace a light blub. Not the regular kind, but one of the long thin ones that need to be replaced exactly the same. Anyway, after parking the car in their private lot (could life get better?) we went in. Immediately asked if we needed help. Makes sense, I don't usually spend time in hardware stores and clearly look like I am a tourist to them. I show them the light and the find one quickly, and then, just to make sure, they open it to confirm its the same exact one. In the past I've come here for similar "one-off" items. Always been able to find what is needed. So even though they are not huge like Home Depot, they carry all the right things and all the things you need for whatever your project is. Service is friendly and polite. This is a town based and supported hardware store. They know what they are doing. Prices are very reasonable, especially since they are just a stones throw away, no gas issues, and the parking is stellar. read more

American Royal Hardware is a great store. They can answer any question, and seem to have any supply necessary to solve a problem. It's like the emergency room of hardware stores (especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when American Royal Hardware became my go-to store for cleaning supplies and other essential goods like paper towels, toilet paper, etc). One memorable experience was when I went there when the key to our car roof cargo box broke off and got stuck in the cargo box lock on top of our car, just as I was done packing up the car to drive down to the shore for vacation. In a matter of seconds, from one of the hundreds of little drawers behind the counter that contain nuts, bolts, screws and other tools, they magically produced the the hook-like tool necessary to get the key out of the lock and even came out to the store's parking lot and extracted the key fragment out of the lock for me. I have been there countless times for various small home improvement projects and they have always been very patient, kind, friendly, and helpful. They have great merchandise, deep product knowledge, and excellent customer service skills. You can go there with a specific problem, or sometimes just to browse around, and you will find practical, useful products that will help your household function better. Shopping in this independent store, meeting other customers there who are sometimes neighbors and friends, and getting to know the staff also make you feel like part of the community. YOU take a 15 minute drive to Home Depot and ask one of eighty "experts" where to find light bulbs, a garden hose, a dimmer, dish soap and more. YOU don't get all the answers because you have to ask the light "expert" then the soap "expert" and after YOU walk in circles for an hour looking for Goo Gone, YOU end up finding someone else to ask only to find out they are only a paint "expert." I just walk into American Royal Hardware and ask anyone (even a customer) where anything in the world is in the store and they tell me in one second. If they don't have it, they tell me where to get it in one second. Even if I am like YOU and I want to look around, I don't have to go down 27 equally spaced aisles to find a plunger because American Royal Hardware is small and manageable. If you don't like asking for directions, you will still find what you are looking for. BUT, do yourself a favor and just ask when you walk in. Anyone who works there will help you find what you need in less than ten seconds. Totally friendly, reliable and in possession of way more than you think, American Royal Hardware is an independent gem. I can't even list all of things I have gotten there - car battery charger, extra glass, dish soap, snow shovel, birdhouse, etc. Variety is the spice of life, especially when it is all contained within a non-commercialized, independent store right near where you live. read more

Love this place. I've been here before for firewood, paint, snow shovels, and other household necessities. This time I came in for some brass cleaner and I was able to find it within a mere three minutes due to how organized the store is. The workers are so genuinely friendly and they make the experience ten times better. They also have their own parking lot right next to the place, which is awfully convenient. I shop here for lightbulbs, packing tape, tools, buckets, grass seed and other minor items. We also bought our grill from American Royal Hardware, and the men who brought it were incredible nice about showing me how to hook up the gas and use it. I also always check out their deals (left hand wall when you walk in). The only disappointment is that they don't carry paint other than True Value, but they don't have control over that. The service is excellent - and they are very friendly. I've never had a problem asking a question or getting advice about something I need. read more

Here is a great example of shopping local and supporting our local merchants here in Montclair! Last month during the tropical storm that knocked out power for so many, my trusted generator for over 15 years was damaged due to a power surge. Having a child with a medical condition this is a huge problem not having power. Despite the heroic efforts of our friend Allen Stjohn and his son Ethan to try to find one at the big box stores, they were all sold out I then started to shop online to order one and was also finding it difficult to find. The one I needed by Generac could not be delivered until mid Sept and it was coming from Canada! I called Generac to see if they could help me find one faster and after they asked for my zip code asked if American Royal Hardware on Park St was near me? Can not get any closer I said. I have shopped there often but never thought of getting this generator from them I called them and Roy the owner was extremely helpful, needed to order one in for me and once he heard my issue with our child offered to not only match the lower online pricing but offered to set it up and deliver it us!! I purchased my gas grill here in 2014. After this long winter, I went to try and use my grill on Memorial Day weekend and I could not start it. I went to American Royal Hardware in person. They quickly sent someone over the next morning. They arrived promptly and fixed the grill in 5-10 minutes. The best part was that I was expecting to pay a fee and there was none.
