I had them make several different keys for me. None of them worked. I brought them back and got a bunch of attitude ("This guy CLAIMS these aren't working" - yeah, I like to spend my time walking back and forth getting keys cut. You found me out.) So a different guy made new keys. Took them home. They don't work either. That was a couple months ago (I've been away). Today I brought them back, along with two different keys for the same lock, and asked if they could just check them against them in the machine, try cleaning them up. Not new keys, just try cleaning up the ones they already made. Lots more attitude, not to mention misinformation. I walked a few blocks up to Mega, got keys cut that work with no attitude (well, a friendly one.) Good thing I spent the $90 for other stuff I needed there. Screw Basics Plus. I have only used this place to get my knives sharpened (one 12 inch chef knife and two 3 in pairing knives), but every time I have been there, it has been a good experience. Dropped the knives off, paid a reasonable price, got them a few hours later, and they were VERY sharp! No complaints. They're my go-to knife sharpening place! read more

I always prefer to support the small businesses in my neighborhood. I'm not sure if Basics Plus technically counts...since it's a chain. But i love this place. I can find basically whatever i need. Need to Replace your CO2 bottle for soda stream? Can do that here! Need your soda syrups? Got that too. Need industrial strength cleaning agents? Go downstairs! And your basic home supplies like liquid plumber type stuff. Key copies and cooking gear? You can get it here. And everyone is friendly. Price gouging and taking advantage of the COVID-19 fear. They have N95 face masks on sale for $200 per 20-pack. They claim that other merchants are selling them for triple the price, and they also paid a lot to acquire them for reselling--that's their reasoning for markup. Seriously? Price gouging on medical supplies? I'll be reporting them to Department of Consumer Affairs. Nice people, and maybe they think they're providing a service by having these masks available, but taking advantage in instances like this--in which people are scared--shows how much they're actually committed to helping out. They may be that local "community" store most times, but just remember the lowly, exploitative price-gouging in times of need. read more

I don't often shop here, but if I'm in a bind and need something quickly, they are usually the ones I think about first. I've been here a few times to pick up some essentials when we first moved here. I also got some keys copied here. Definitely not the cheapest place, but again, if I need something quickly I can usually find it there. This store is way bigger than you would ever guess by looking at it's storefront. Not only does it go surprising far back, but there is an entire basement full of goodies. I'm sure that even if it doesn't catch the eye of passers-by, their good service keeps people coming back. The employees and management of this place are also all super nice. After I moved into the neighborhood last summer, I came in here two days in a row, and the second day the manager introduced himself and gave me his card. Although I never needed to go back for months, I returned again a few weeks ago in search of one of those dish scrub brushes that holds the soap in the handle... and of course I found them here, and in many colors. I also bought a drain board for our dish rack, but it was too small. The return process was super easy and no hassle at all. So I've lived in this neighborhood about 2 years now, and only about a 3-wood from Basic Plus, yet I had never gone in. That changed just last week (obviously or I wouldnt be writing this review). I had NO idea the place was so big and deep. Not to mention, there is a full hardware store on the lower level. Who knew? Not only that, but it's clean and bright and the employees were SO friendly. So friendly in fact, I'm fairly certain I was being hit on. I wanted to tell myself it must be because I'm so dashing and debonair, but upon further review I realize being a 25 or 26 year old gal working in a hardware store must be as boring as it would be for me to work in a L'eggs, Hanes, Bali, Playtex outlet, and that flirting with guys is likely the only thing keeping her awake and sane. As for my purchase, I replaced 2 fluorescent bulbs that blew in my kitchen for the modest and reasonable cost of $4.95 each. Good stuff all-around, and I'll be back for here for my hardware needs. read more

Two floors and it has all the hardware I need. Two minor complaints: (1) they are not competitively priced. I didn't think the store was extremely cheap. (2) there were about 7 staff members there. As I walked downstairs to buy my item, probably 3 of them asked me if I needed help (which was extremely nice). Perhaps one of the best experiences I have had in a store EVER. My husband and I kept saying to each other "Wow, they're all so friendly." I just moved to the City with only a few suitcases and stopped in just to browse at the housewares. I gasped when I saw that Basics Plus does same-day delivery for free! No strings! Whatever you buy, you can have it couriered to you same-day. (That's not a thing on the West Coast). What a life-saver! No more worrying about transporting a full-length mirror on the subway! The employees here are also helpful and available. I had multiple people ask me if I needed help, and multiple people pointed me to the right place when I asked for help. When it came time for the delivery, an employee called ahead to make sure I was at the apartment. The delivery guy was polite and the friendliest of them all! The only reason I gave 1 star was for the one employee @ the entrance...NOT the case w/the rest of my experience there! The "owner" was extremely rude to me. His demeanor towards myself was condescending in words, attitude "was of a pompous nature". He lost our business. Politely, I took what was no longer needed to be purchased there. In general this place is good. I love that they have a student discount, and overall their prices are fair. Only complaints I have are they used to always have one or more people downstairs in the lower level to hep customers, the last several times I went there was no one. This was annoying. Also last time I went for a key copy, the copy they made did not work.. so something was wrong there.. Also I brought in two knives for their sharpening service, and when I got them back, they were literally no sharper than they were when I dropped off. So i recommend then for "basics" but not for key making or knife sharpening. read more

Visited the location many times. Staff is very friendly. They usually get many customers from the neighborhood so they'll know what you need depending on the season. The it's very difficult to make alterations to the outside of you home at the Upper West Side. They can give you a good hint as to what you can and can't get away with. read more

I used to be fond of this store - conveniently close and has decent selection. When I moved into the area I bought a lot of household items from it. That is until I tried to return a faulty item that put my whole project on halt. The silicone tube I bought was dried up and, instead of feeding silicone through clipped nozzle, blew up backwards in my hands. A real nightmare but solvable as the store is around the corner and it was before 10 pm. Boy was I wrong. The person at the desk was neither apologetic nor understanding. I did not have time to look for a receipt at home but had a proof of purchase on my phone and the card on me. In most stores with reasonable customer service it would not have been a big deal. The items had the bar codes on them and a simple check would have uncovered that these were carried by the store. They were still in the store's bag! I was not looking for a refund but a simple exchange of something that should have not been faulty in the first place - just $10 in value! African-American gentleman (with what seemed like a tattoo of a lightning next to his ear) was rude and dismissive. To top it all, regardless of claiming to be a manager, he refused to give me his name as, in his opinion, I did not need it (Sat 9/5/15 at 8 pm). I went home and started to look for a receipt but then realized that $10 was not worth it. Instead of redecorating the store, they should have hired someone who has a basic grasp of a customer service concept. Especially with Gracious Home and Lowes stores just down the road. Not only were they super friendly but it was good value ($8-ish per knife) and they were able to do it within 2 hours, just in time for an impromptu dinner party I was hosting. Every time I stop in there, I am blown away by the level of service and staff attentiveness. From the initial greeting to the cashier, to all kinds of floor help in between. Makes you think twice about online shopping! Prices are reasonable, although they tend to carry higher-end stuff...so it's not always the place for a bargain.
