I am writing this review, so this doesn't happen to anyone else! Please NOTE that their Benjamin Moore paints DO NOT MATCH the color chips. Instead, they are 1-2 tones lighter/off-tone (I am a fashion designer, so I know about my colors). It is so ridiculous that this is known to them, that their Sales Associates are instructed to tell the customers that this is the case!! They shouldn't sell that paint! But BEFORE I understood this, when after buying the darkest Grey color they had (2129-20), and getting home to find out it looked much lighter than the color chip, I decided to try again and went back to buy BLACK instead. My 2nd sales guy simply said to me "Why don't you just buy the Black from the shelf?" (He also said they were the same price...). So I said, thinking he was just trying to make it easier on himself since it was end of day, "No, I just want you to mix my designer Black paint (2132-10)". He never explained that the paint colors wouldn't match... I went home to find out their BLACK paint looks Dk NAVY!!! To make things worse, after wasting $50 for the 2 cans of paint and a frustrated weekend trying to paint my little bookcase, I went back to their store to explain what had happened. I didn't even expect a refund, just a simple aknowledgement. BUT I guess, at Scheman's hardware store, the customer is never right. The manager didn't even want to hear my version of the story. Instead, he believed (wrongly) what his sales associate said... (He of course said he told me that the paint colors were not going to match the color chips). This happened 2 wks ago, and I still have that icky feeling of having been really wronged... Again, writing this review just hoping this doesn't happen to anyone else! Silvia P. read more

Probably telling that the last review was over 2 years ago. Staff was sexist and tried to mansplain the difference between a screwdriver and a drill. Needless to say I won't be purchasing from them. read more

Apart of the loud music and "lady singer" in the back counter the store has almost everything that home owners or contractors need. Prices are a little bit higher than others hardware stores. I'll definitely will come back soon read more

Great customer service and stock. I had to buy some basic gardening supplies during my lunch break, and since I didn't want to be wandering around visiting hardware stores, I emailed Scheman's in the morning asking if they had potting soil etc. They emailed back promptly, and then when I went over there a helpful worker took me to their gardening section and went through all the tools with me. On the way through the store I saw that they have everything you'd want from a hardware store. Much better than a schlep to Home Depot. read more

Its pretty freaking handy having a hardware store downstairs from your office. Temperature complaints? They have portable heaters and fans. Suddenly a little darker in the office? All kinds of light bulbs. Boss forgot his keys at home...again? Head downstairs and they'll make you a copy. Last minute office renovation and you need materials... fast? Boom. Ask Richard and Andy, they'll help you through it...if they can't get it they will at least point you in the right direction. Richard and the rest of the guys really go above and beyond to help out when I'm in the store and are always available by email to answer any questions or concerns I might have. Note. they aren't really around on the weekends (they might be on saturday but not entirely sure).. then again no one else in the area is either. read more

Worst experience ever. I went in to get some keys made and they ignored me to help every other customer in the store, including two who came in after me. The customers were all men--white men. They were all treated respectfully. The clerk had finally turned to me when more guys came in and he literally walked away from me as I was handing him my keys to talk to them. Finally the other guy took my keys, which sucked because I realized the first guy was not helping, but harassing and following the African American guys, clearly thinking they were possible shoplifters. I would have walked out except they had my keys. Even when the guy was ringing me up he kept stopping to try and keep an eye on the black guys, it was so racist and awful. And then when I got home, none of the keys work!! Six useless keys, one useless store. read more

Meh is definitely the right word! I get that prices might be a little higher because of the area, but $4.99 for a two pack of metal hooks is nuts, especially when the shelf price, WITH the item name, says $3.49. "The price is whatever it rings up at" is not a great policy when your store is just a wreck! If you've marked up the prices, mark up the shelf labels, or at least make sure everything is on the right peg. I was not greeted or offered help until my pass back through the store, and had to scoot my items closer to the checkout girl until she looked away from her cell phone long enough to begin being bothered to ring me up. Next time I'll walk a little further to the 8th avenue location. read more

I cannot speak to their selection, because my paint and hardware needs are usually pretty basic. However, I can speak to their wonderful staff. I am no handy woman, but every time I go into Scheman's with a project in mind, their staff helps me pick the best supplies for the job and then gives me a tutorial on how to complete it. I never feel like I'm being judged and am encouraged to ask questions. I live in NJ, but this store is by my office, and I'd rather carry a gallon of paint home on the PATH from this store, than buying it close by because of their service. read more

Their tiny shop is pretty equipped with the essentials, just don't have your spare keys made here, they're not that great for that. Otherwise, they're pretty knowledgeable and can order things for you if they're out of stock. read more

It is refreshing to come across someone like Christian at Scheman's. He has such a high level of customer service, goes out of this way to make sure I get the right product, is very knowledgeable, patient, personable and is the reason I am a loyal client! read more

I was just in there. Every item I sought to buy was at least $10 more at the checkout counter than marked. I left without buying anything and went to a nearby store that posted accurate prices that were much less. read more

Just picked up a bunch of random stuff here. They have a wide selection of really anything you can think of. Prices are a bit on the high side, but given the location, I guess it can be justified. Dudes who worked here were super friendly and really helpful. I'll definitely be back! read more

I just bought paint and supplies from this Hardware store and I walked out really happy. I was blown away by the politeness and respect and general courteousness shown to me, a new customer. I'm 6 months pregnant and everything was packed up for me so it was easy to carry; and everyone was genuinely nice and helpful; and not patronising - this is the only time I have experienced this in an American hardware store!! I'm from England and I've been painting houses and doing D.I.Y. since I was 19. I have also welded, done iron work and stone and wood carving in my past lives. Usually when entering a hardware store in the USA I am met with a sneering, dismissive "what are you doing in here" look; a "you can't possibly know what you're doing attitude", crap service and hardware employees have given me the wrong item and tried to pawn it off on me, or incorrectly cut wood and piping and gotten snarky when I asked for the items to be re-cut properly. I will definitely be returning and delighted by this find in mid-town. As stated in other reviews, I would rather buy my paint here and schlepp it the 10 miles uptown to home, than buy it locally and be demeaned. I'm only holding off on the 5th star - because I'm waiting to see if I get the same lovely service the next time. Thank you staff at Scheman's Bryant park - you are ace!!! read more
