Grabbed some take out from this Thai place because it's one of the few in the area. I have never been here before and as someone who eats A LOT of Asian food, this place was SPOT ON. Our group ordered and shared the Thai fried rice, pad Thai, spicy noodles, sautéed vegetables, and spring rolls. Great portion sizes and the Thai fried rice is out of this world. It had an amazing flavor profile with a strong blackened/char to it and great Thai seasonings. Also, their spice rating is no joke. 1-5, 1 being the mildest and 5 being the spiciest. I LOVE spicy food and tend to order everything as hot as possible. I ordered a 5 spice level for the spicy noodles and it did not disappoint (I was in tears). Went for the lunch buffet and was very satisfied. Fresh spring rolls, both fried and not, and delicious cream cheese wontons (probably the best we've had on a buffet) with a variety of sweet-to-spicy sauces (amazing), really good curries and tom yum tofu soup. The Pad Thai was nothing to write home about though and wasnt a huge fan of how the buffet was set up with only access on one side and the spring roll/sauce table behind where the line formed - got a bit cramped as it got busier. Decided to try here while in the area as was in the mood for Thai or Indian. A nice little restaurant in a strip mall, walking in and was promptly greated. Was no wait but were other guests. Staff was prompt, courteous, and friendly. When noticed hadn't brought drinks by mistake confirmed we wanted them. We had a Thai Ice Coffee and Ice Tea, both were complimentary of the food, i.e. helped dampen the spice when needed. We started with the Curry Puffs and Chicken Won Ton Soup. The curry puffs were great, especially in the homemade sauce. The won ton soup was nice and flavorful, my daughter polished off all the won tons. Entrees were Curry Beef (medium heat), Holy Basil Chiken (medium heat), and chicken fried rice. Both non rice entrees come with white rice. The rice is properly cooked, moist and sticky rather then dry or hard that you sometimes at some other places. The Curry Beef was excellent, very tasty, beef was tender, vegetables were well represented, sauce was flavorful with a little sweet and proper amount of heat for what was ordered. Recommend putting the rice in the bowl to soak up the sauce. The Holy Basil Chicken had a good balance of vegetables and chicken, vegetables cut at good sizes. The sauce was proper heat as ordered, you can see the pepper seeds in the photos which give a great spice. The Chicken Fried Rice was good on taste, portion and balance. I haven't been to any Sawatdee for awhile and have never been to this location. It may just be me, but I tend to like the smaller family run Thai places better than places this. The food was decent but just lacking in the depth and balance of flavor that you find in better Thai places. The egg rolls were nicely crispy but lacking in much flavor beyond deep fried. The dipping sauce was sweeter and also less interesting than other places. I had the Chicken Red Curry, the portion was fairly small and a bit lacking in chicken. The curry was decent but the predominant flavor was heat. I remember that the spicing can be aggressive and 3 is likely hotter than most people can tolerate. My wife had the Holy Basil with Chicken. This one too was just lacking in any depth of flavor. It was decent but not amazing. The other couple that we were with are adverse to heat and complex flavors and then were both very happy with their Sweet and Sour Chicken and Chicken with Vegetables. With all of the great Thai places around I am in no hurry to return here. The value for the price just isn't there. read more

I've had better Thai in mpls but I've also had much worse. The spring rolls were fresh, seafood fresh, curry spicy. Warning that the shrimp and green beans in curry sauce is literally just that- like a pound of green beans. Luckily I swapped some other veggies with my husbands curry but it was a bit much. There was an actual fingernail in my pad Thai. We've had food from this place several times before and it's usually great, so this was disappointing. We called to complain and they just said "your complaint has been noted." I don't normally ask for things to be comped, but if a literal fingernail in food isn't worthy of a refund I do not know what is. read more

This is our typical to go Thai food place since it's a few minutes away from home. We had never actually gone to the restaurant to sit down and eat. Service was okay. We were a bit confused as to who actually was our server since three ladies kept coming back and forth to us. Also, I had ordered the friend rice on a pineapple and when our food was brought just regular fried rice was brought to us so we had to wait longer for them to get my order right. To start off we had egg rolls which were okay. Mine had a bit too much pepper for my tasting. I ordered the "Weekend" special which was pineapple fried rice. I was really excited for my platter since it look phenomenal on the picture. However, I was not impressed. It lacked flavor! We also had beef pad Thai which is our regular order and it was good. We chose 1 as spice level because a 3 or 4 is always a hit or miss with it being either mild or beyond spicy that you can't even enjoy it. The pad see ew was not good either, usually pad see ew has wide egg noodles but the noodles were essentially pad thai noodles. There was little to no egg or broccoli so essentially it was just noodles and sauce. The curry fried rice was dry. I regularly order fresh spring rolls to-go here. They're incredible. I don't LOVE the fresh peanut sauce but many of my friends/co-workers do. The other night my boyfriend and I ordered takeout: red curry, vegetarian spicy noodles, and cream cheese wontons. We got medium-hot and it was HOT. She warned us, of course, and it was very good, but also hot. If you don't like hot, be wary and order mild :) All I can say is that Sawatdee is great, high-quality Thai takeout. THE. LUNCH. BUFFET. I highly recommend Sawatdee for a lunch break. I have gone a few times with people from my work for a quick lunch outing, and my coworkers are always so happy I introduced them to this place. The lunch buffet is about $12/person and you get fried rice, spring rolls, pad Thai, curry, fruit, cookies, cream cheese puffs & more. Everything is freshly cooked and has amazing flavor. I have been wanting to go to Sawatdee for years, Thai is my favorite. I finally went for lunch today and ordered Panang curry with chicken and chicken satay, my friend ordered... something with noodles and tofu. It was by far the worst Panang curry I have ever had. The taste of the curry itself wasn't awful, but it was just a huge bowl of beans. There was less than a quarter of an orange pepper sliced on top almost as a garnishment, and maybe 2 ounces of chicken underneath. The portion was TINY. I understand a small portion is great for a lunch, but to spend $29 for a lunch portion, an appetizer and a tea is absolutely ridiculous. My friend that was with me has been to several Sawatdee restaurants, and I believe this one in the past as well. She was disappointed as well, the level 3 spice was nothing compared to what she has had elsewhere, and it was disappointing as well. read more

My favorite Thai near me! The staff is very nice and the food is excellent. I often go here with family when they're in town, the atmosphere is relaxed and not too busy. They're also extremely fast at preparing take out orders and I've had 100% order accuracy, which cannot be overvalued! With regards to food I usually get a Satay and a curry. I appreciate that the curry isn't too oily which I've had issues with at some of the other local Thai restaurants. Decor is about average for a small family run Thai place, not the most modern or anything but I can't ding them for that. It's Bloomington, not uptown :) I do wish there would be a bit more traffic at the dinner crowd time. Sometimes it can feel kinda lonely. read more

First time here on a Friday night and service was quick and friendly. We got sue's egg rolls and we've probably never had such flavorful egg rolls before. The skin was very nice and crunchy yet soft at the same time. If you're a meat eater I would recommend this. For dinner we got a shrimp rad na and the combination entree with the papaya salad, beef jerky and Jasmine rice. Both were very good. Both were ordered mild and it gave it just enough of a kick for you to taste it, if you like spicy but still wanna taste the food I would tell them to give you level 2 for your food up. I believe it's medium. One thing is that the dishes are a little small but the price reflects that obviously. We paid $13 for the rad na and $13 for the combo so we knew the dishes were smaller, for sure not a family style type of dish you could share. read more

My co-workers like to come here, but truthfully I am not a huge fan. It is basically the Thai version of sub-par Chinese takeout, including a lunch buffet that is equally uninspiring (fried chicken, cream cheese wontons, maple cookies, you know the deal). Their stirfrys scream of MSG. It isn't totally horrible, but there must be better places for Thai. I love Sawatdee! It's in my top 5 favorite restaurants. The food is delicious and their prices are reasonable, especially considering the substantial portions they give you. The service is always prompt and the waiters/waitresses are always very nice to me. Come in often enough, and they will definitely start knowing what you like to order. One of my favorite dishes is the Holy Basil Supreme. I always order it with beef, but the pork, shrimp, and tofu versions are fantastic as well. The green peppers, mushrooms, basil, and onions compliment the meat beautifully. Everything soaks in the bold, flavorful juices --- which is the best part in my opinion. Every spoonful is an explosion of perfection. (Served with white rice) Another of my go-to's would have to be the Supreme Shrimp. You can order it with squid as well, but I always just get the shrimp. Jumbo shrimp, green peppers, carrots, and onions. All served with a beautifully luscious red curry sauce. The texture is just right, and the aroma is intoxicating. I've had many friends take samples, and every single one of them has enjoyed this dish. (Served with white rice) The spice scale is something to be admired at Sawatdee. They can make things mild for those who don't like extra heat. But, if you dare, they are willing to serve you up a heapin' pile of spice (that's how I roll). The beauty of their spiciness, however, is that you can still 100% taste all of the other subtle flavors. Upon ordering, you have a choice of 1-5; They will warn you that a level 3 is hotter than "most people" can handle. Which is probably the truth. But I always order a level 5 (their highest option). They always serve me up an incredibly spicy, yet still absolutely delicious dish! My favorite appetizers: Fried Spring Rolls, Paradise Chicken Wings, Thai Style Beef Jerky, Curry Puffs (AMAZING dipping sauce comes with all of these) My favorite entrees: Holy Basil Supreme, Supreme Shrimp, Green/Red Chicken Curry, Beef with Oyster Sauce, Stir Fry Shrimp, Tod Gratiam Prig Thai, and Thai Fried Rice My only two small complaints about this place are that I didn't enjoy their Pad Thai (although, to be fair, I don't like most Pad Thais) and that their desserts leave a lot to be desired. read more

Got take out from this place - chicken panang and chicken pad thai ~$24. They are quick with prepping your food and the service is friendly. Good, convenient location. Prices are good, but I would say their food is also just okay. The pad thai was very one-note, the noodles were a little on the tougher side, could've used more acidity (they give lemons rather than limes), and could've used some of the typical veggies they usually have for this dish (e.g. bean sprouts, cilantro), but were missing. The chicken panang was also less creamy than I would've expected, and the flavor had some spice but just wasn't that hard hitting. I'll probably try other thai restaurants in the area before coming back here, but it was great to try! Maybe try the buffet next time to see what else they have to offer. read more

My family and I stopped by this place for an early dinner (3pm) before we headed off to the airport back home to Chi-town, IL. We love thai food and this place was not what we expected. We were not happy that they ran out of some of the food available in their menu that we were trying to order, like fresh papaya salad and beef jerky. The place was a bit stuffy/warm and we were the only ones in the place so how could they have ran out of those type of foods? When we ordered pad see wu (sp?) instead of wide flat noodles, we got "pad thai" looking noodles. The pad thai noodle dish was a bit soupy. And the chicken laup was spicy but too much lettuce not enough chicken. The service was good, the Thai ice coffee was ok. We liked the fried spring rolls and chicken wing as well. But overall, we had way better thai food and it was a bit expensive. We spent $90 buck for 4 ppl (4 dishes, two drinks, and two apps). The food is good. I only ate off the buffet. There are about 6 items to choose from. Pretty scrawny Buffet. They seem to be in a hurry to get me out even though the restaurant was pretty empty. Great Thai Food That Stands The Test of Time - Service? No So Much. I used to live in Minneapolis, and ate regularly at the Sawatdee location downtown on Washington Avenue regularly. When I was visiting recently, after being away for years, I recalled that experience and asked my friend if they were still open. We checked the internet, and to my delight, we located Sawatdee nearby in Bloomington! I went with high expectations, hoping for a delicious experience. I was a little concerned to arrive and find the restaurant empty at lunch time. I also noted that the décor lacked the warmth that I remembered from the downtown location. My friend reminded me that it was all about the food, so I let go of those observations. The menu was extensive, and I was excited to see that #18 Rama Thai Delight was still on the menu, as it used to be my standing favorite. We ordered hot tea and the #9 Golden Shrimp as an appetizer to share. Although I studied the menu for a bit, I had to order my favorite Rama Thai Delight (peanut curry smothered chicken on a bed of fresh steamed spinach). My friend decided on the #63 Shrimp & Scallops (enhanced by fresh garlic and Thai sauce). We both went with Mild as our spice level, knowing you can spice it up if desired, and asked that additional spice be delivered with the food. The Golden Fried Shrimp came out quickly, and were delicious. We almost requested an additional order, but our main course arrived and we realized we had more than enough food. Both of our dishes were delicious, but we did need to add more spice to our dishes. Unfortunately, our server had not brought it with our food as requested. She had also disappeared after delivering our food. After a few minutes I got up and went to the only staff I could find to ask for the condiments. I don't understand why, but it still took a few minutes for anyone to bring us what we needed. In spite of that inconvenience, the meal was good and had great flavor overall. With the additional spice to give us the heat we wanted, the food was perfect. The upside was that the food was really well prepared and delicious, and my favorite dish had not changed over the years that I was away from Minneapolis. The downside was the our visit to Sawatdee was somewhat tarnished by the service. I would have given this five stars for the food, but the slow (nearly 5 minutes) service with the additional condiments we requested (when we ordered our food) has to be noted. It's been several years since I've been to Sawatdee, and I had fond memories, so I was excited to be in the area during their lunch buffet. I don't know if I've been spoiled living in Los Angeles and the SF Bay area the last few years, but I was unimpressed. Keep in mind these comments are only for their lunch buffet: - Flavors were okay - selection was sub-par (definitely would have liked more curry options than just beef massaman) - the veggies were on the soggy side - pad thai was too sweet - the best item: the chicken/veggie/rice soup. LOVED the strong ginger flavor. - the price was right at 8.95/person Overall we left our meal feeling kind of gross/unsatisfied, and that's not just because I stuffed my face (it is a buffet, afterall =). finally, it would be nice to see more asian restaurants using gluten-free soy sauce. It is often the only gluten-containing ingredient in many dishes, and this simple substitution would attract a large segment of customers. Sawatdee would be smart to go this route. read more
