I moved to the area a year ago and bookmarked Savor to try, as I'm a vegan. I don't know why it took so long to come here, but I'm glad I finally did, and I definitely will come back! Savor is an all-vegetarian, but mostly vegan, Yemeni restaurant. Everything is either vegan or is labeled as a 'vegan option' if there is dairy. , Here's what I tried: -Split pea soup: comes with every order (at least during lunch). I love a good split pea soup, and they're hard to find vegan out in the wild, so I really enjoyed this. -Artichoke Shawarma: Artichoke is soft but meaty. Hummus tastes fresh and homemade. Lots of flavor and zestiness throughout! -Mujadara: Forbidden rice and lentils topped with tofu, veggies, and tahini sauce. They use Hodo tofu, which is a great quality tofu. The rice is so soft and has a great texture to bite into. It's a mix of hot ingredients and cold ingredients, making this an adventurous plate for your taste buds! -Wild mushroom knafeh: My favorite dish I tried! Savory mushrooms with the sweet cream and crunchy top. I honestly didn't know what I was eating, but I could not stop until it was gone! -Dessert was recommended to us by the owner - a sweet coconut cream pastry. Again, I wasn't too sure what I was eating, but this dessert was a delectable bite from beginning to end. We really enjoyed our time and thank Mo for the wonderful recommendations, service, and above all, the delicious food! We will be back! read more

What a little gem. Stopped for a quick lunch and left so full and ready for a nap. We shared a falafel wrap and a four dip plate. Falafel was moist and delicious. Cooked perfectly and comes cut in half. Perfect for sharing. The dips were amazing. The dips included a tomato based dip, green hummus, traditional hummus, and baba ganoush. The green hummus was the best, followed by the tomato based dip. We devoured everything. House made hummus made the meal. The owner came out at the end of the meal to ask how things were. I've come here twice, once for lunch and once for the Sunday prix-fixe dinner, and had a terrific experience both times. The food is delicious and $35 for a prix-fixe dinner (entree + two appetizers) is incredibly reasonable by SF standards. My wife, who is pescatarian, though the food was amazing. For dinner, we brought our two kids, who ordered off the menu, and they had a good time. Only issue is that they are a little short-staffed - the chef/owner is also the maitre d' and person who takes orders - but it's fine and I suppose it's how prices are kept so reasonable. read more

Yum! The food was delicious, we got there around 6 on a Friday and it was pretty empty but as soon as it hit 7 it started getting crowded (with it seemed like a lot of regulars). It was tapas so portions were pretty small and not super cheap (it's sf so what do you expect). But we still enjoyed and would come back! Wow I was very happy to find this place. I am often looking for a good lunch place near UCSF Parnassus and most often go over to 9th and eat at Tartine. But this place was a wonderful surprise. We enjoyed a delicious soup and two tasty vegan entrees (one was the wild mushroom knaffe and the other was potato and sage torte). We topped it off with Baklava and Dubai Chocolate torte for dessert. The service was warm and hospitable and they even sent us home with some extra soup! The corner location made it easy to drop off my passenger (mom) who uses a walker and I even found parking nearby. But it is also walkable from UCSF and right on the muni line too. 10/10 would return. read more

One of the best meals i've had, the food was incredible!! The service was incredible as well!! My fiancé and I were originally only going to order two dishes but the waiter suggested we get a third so we don't leave hungry and we definitely weren't hungry after leaving! We got Yemeni chai w/ oatmilk to drink and it was the best chai i've had in my life I swear! It was warm and comforting. Savor was such a joy to visit on my recent trip to SF. I'm always on the lookout for new vegan eats and Savor hit the spot with its healthy and flavorful Mediterranean menu. The place was a little smaller than I had thought it'd be from the pictures, and it seems there is no patio dining in the winter months. However, it was clean and cozy on the inside. The owner greeted me warmly and helped me pick out some dishes to try. Both were fantastic and very charmingly plated too. I honestly couldn't say which one I liked more. They came with a hearty lentil soup. If I were local I'd definitely be a regular here! Exquisite food in a cozy setting. Have had two delicious meals at Savor, with every mouthful a culinary delight. The chef owner does magic with vegetables, lentils and spices turning out mouthwatering sharing plates. Best to make a reservation and be prepared to get what you get, it's not a menu or establishment that lends itself to substitutions or alterations to what is offered. Savor is a tiny café and family-run with solid service. We shared everything other than soups, which is what the restaurant (and I recommend). Savor's portion sizes and prices were both great. I got the artichoke bean soup (soup of the day), which was hearty, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned with the right amount of salt. We shared the following dishes: Jackfruit Shawarma: Delicious jackfruit with perfect texture and not too much salt. Hodo Tofu Sougar: The tofu was well-seasoned and marinated, the baba ghanoush was hearty, and the platter came with the right amount of pita. We are visiting from Chicago and read about Savor Cafe in the Eater SF best restaurants for vegetarians (we are a one vegetarian one omnivore couple). It did not disappoint - everything was delicious - the Hodo tofu sougar was so delicious - like fancier than you can make at home vegetarian comfort food. The potato and sage torte was a new potato experience and also amazing. I am no stranger to coconut cream pie and I absolutely love loved the vegan coconut cream pie with an Arabic twist - rivaled any non-vegan coconut cream pie I've had in the past. We also loved the quiet neighborhood vibe and the chef/owner was serving and was so cool and funny and down to earth. Would definitely recommend. Six stars! read more

I absolutely love savor cafe and I'm sad I didn't try it earlier! This is a fully vegetarian vegan restaurant and my first time every trying yemeni food. We came during lunch, and each item comes with their soup of the day! The soup was an amazing lentil soup, combined with many other amazing ingredients that I can't remember! I just felt so comforted eating it. We originally wanted the sampler platter but we were told it would be way too much to share between the 2 of us (recommended for 6 people) so we ended up going with the tofu entree (recommended by them) and the potato torte. Both were so amazing!! The baba ghanoush with the tofu was so tasty. The bread was so fluffy and soft and the harisa and hot sauce were packed with flavor! The torte was super yummy too. I can't wait to come back and try some more!! We also got some chai and it was really refreshing as it had some minty, creamy, turmeric flavors. Not sure if that is what was in it but I really enjoyed those flavors together and def recommend trying it! I've been vegan for 8 years and was excited when a vegetarian restaurant opened in the neighborhood. I like to build relationships and support local stores, but unfortunately, Mohammad has always been very rude to me. I usually tried to order takeout rather than dine in, and he always seemed annoyed by that. The last time I tried to order takeout at dinner, he refused to let me order from the dinner menu and said he could only offer something from the lunch menu. When I chose an item, he got upset and told me I was only allowed to choose a wrap or sandwich. He then kicked me out and told me to leave and come back another time. The food is great, but I avoid this place because of the owner. He is extremely mean and I am always uncomfortable when I would go. If he was nicer I would go all the time but I don't want to give him my business anymore. It's such a bummer since I live so close. There have been many occasions where he's been rude, and it's happened too many times for me not to say something. He gives attitude when asked about ingredients (like whether something has nuts, even for a nut allergy) and even tells people to leave if they look at the menu for too long. He should stay in the back of the house and hire people that can provide their guests good customer service. read more

Lovely little cafe with some amazing homemade vegan dishes. I came here to order takeout and it was great. All the entrees include a side salad or soup of the day. I tried their Portobello Shawarma and the Pulled king Trumpet Burger, which came in two making it easy to share or save one half for later. The shawarma wrap was loaded with veggies and a tasty tahini dressing. Although it ended up falling apart due to how wet the ingredients were, so I'd probably skip on this in the future. The vegan trumpet burger though was fantastic. I loved the house bbq sauce and the use of mushrooms was perfect. The two soups we had included were delicious as well. Second time I've eaten here. Not a vegetarian, but the magic done with non-meat ingredients is amazing. We had the Jackfruit Shawarma that came with a split pea soup. Both were wonderful! Parking in the area can be a bit difficult but it wasn't too bad. We got seated right away and the guy helping us gave us great recs we had 3 things that we shared and it was enough for us. We had the hot and cold asparagus which was amazing! I love asparagus and it wasn't overcooked , it was still crisp and it had a great sauce that went with it. We also had this dish with tofu and caramleized onions and some greens on the bottom. It was super flavorful and tasty, we devoured this so fast. The mushroom knaffe was so crispy with a bunch of savory mushrooms inside. We loved this as well. We ended dinner with their bread pudding and it was also super soft and not too sweet. Could taste some jam on top and cinnamon, was the perfect way to end the meal. Will definitely be coming back when i stop by in the area. Love this place and can't get enough of it! Attention all you Michelin foodies looking for a good bite, this place should def be a Bib Gourmand (maybe it already is?) but this is the def of hole in the wall gem that I can't gatekeep. The food is an absolute art of flavors and everything is so unique in the blend of spices, textures, and flavors Chef Mohamed uses. Visiting from LA, this is always my first and last meal of my trip. It's a small place and the menu seems to constantly change in their specials as I haven't gotten to try any of the specials twice. The best way to experience this is to just let Chef Mohamed choose and curate your meal and follow his suggestions. Def always try all the specials! We always order so many things to try and although he's a one man show as server and chef in the kitchen, the food comes out incredible! He def isn't doing this for the money, he seems to just enjoy sharing his creative dishes and speaks through his food. He even has his own cookbook that he keeps low key and does not advertise (you gotta ask him for one if you want one) and I was lucky enough to buy a copy in person and have him autograph it for me. It is a beautiful cookbook with a heartfelt letter to readers that left me and my brother with bittersweet tears being able to hear his culinary journey and childhood. The cookbook is so easy to follow so I can make the food myself when I return home in LA. TLDR this is a secret Michelin star quality place with the most amazing and unique dishes. If you see the hot cold asparagus salad or the artichoke torte, get it! Who knows when it'll appear on the menu again. Thank you Chef Mohamed, we will meet again! After semi-annual visits at Chef Mohammed's Saha at SF's Hotel Carlton, over to Berkeley where I was happy not to have to cross a bridge for it, I followed him back to the Hotel Carlton, and now to his 1 year old vegetarian/vegan Savor Cafe at Sunset. If I could whip up vegetarian and vegan dishes like the artichoke schwarma, wild mushroom knaffe, falafel croquettes, and mashi that was so good, we ordered 2, I would become vegetarian or vegan. This place was just average, the reviews seem quite hyped, because to me the flavors were mild and subdued. The hummus platter literally has 2 falafel and 4 kind of hummus, it is a shame what they get away with for $20, it isn't worth $10! The hummus were quite flavorless. We ordered the daily special soup (perfect for the rainy day), the mushroom dish, sweet potato dish and the tofu! All were seasoned very well and quite affordable. Our server, who I believe was the chief, was great at providing recommendations and explaining the dishes as he brought them out. He also gave us a dessert on the house and let us hang around for almost an hour after we finished eating to chat. Incredible vegan/vegetarian spot for middle eastern tapas, a much needed niche in the sunset. I had heard amazing things about it and was blown away by the dishes we tried. All of the dishes were unique, inventive, and a bold mix of flavors unlike anything I've had. Lentil soup- 5/5, was the soup of the day, very hearty and hit the spot on a cold rainy day. Nothing crazy unusual about this, but delicious. 2. The potato and sage torte- 5/5 this dish was incredibly flavorful and unlike anything I've had. Not even sure how to describe it. Delicious. 3. Mushroom knaffe- 5/5 a delicious savory spin on a common dessert, this was SO good. My only complaint is I wish it were bigger!! 4. Hodo Tofu Sougar- 5/5 again super interesting mix of flavors, and probably the best baba ganoush I have ever had. If it weren't for the baba ganoush I could probably skip this in the future but it was incredible. Can't wait to come back and try some of their day time dishes. Service was friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is cute and very unassuming given the shockingly high quality of food. This place is on the pricier end (16-19 dollars for relatively smalls tapas dishes) but to be honest with the quality and inventiveness of the dishes I would expect this to be in some 3 dollar sign restaurant downtown. The owner is also the server so you definitely get a personal feel to the meal. I got the Portabello mushroom lavash wrap ($15) which comes with a bowl of soup.
