This was the experience at a different location we tried 2 days prior. Nonetheless, the food was just as delicious! It was made fresh. The mini is the perfect size. I got a regular size last time and I only ate half and took the other half home. My teen son (big appetite) couldn't even finish the regular sized one. Why don't Calzone's have the same publicity as the pizza pie? Everyone loves a pizza but its folded over cousin is treated as the red headed stepchild on most menus. Thats not the case at Sauce on the Side, because the calzone is the starting QB! I ordered the Costanza soly because it included eggplant and that seemed like a bold addition but I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn't try myself. I'd be lying if I said it was the greatest calzone I'd ever had BUT it beat the hell out of the can of soup alternative. What set this meal aside was range of dipping sauce options (who would've thought, a place with "sauce" in the name, mastered an array of sauces). I believe if Charlie was Italian, that factory would've been for sauces and imagine they'd be perfected like here. I can't comment on the ambiance, because I was lazy and had it doordashed. But, it was Friday and I had a few seltzers in the system and thought the $5 delivery fee was cheaper than a night in orange. Final score 4.128/5.00. Consistently the most positive food experience I have in St. Louis. Yes this chain, but specifically this restaurant in particular. Even at its busiest they seem to be able to deliver your meal to the table in 20 minutes and here's the thing...it's the same every time! It's never burnt or underfilled or greasy or any worries you might have assuming the picture is better than reality. No the food really looks like the pictures and tastes better! Make sure you come in November for the Mayflower Calzone, the best fast service meal that's ever been created. It's a calzone stuffed with turkey breast, stuffing, dried sweet cranberries, mashed sweet potatoes, and candied walnuts (Which I swap out for bacon) dipped in a spicy brown gravy. The parking is pretty limited (street parking), but they do have a 15-min pickup spot for curbside and quick pickups! I love pesto, so I knew I had to get the Roasty Toasty (pesto chicken plus some other fillings) and it did not disappoint-- the edges are a bit bread-heavy, but that's expected for calzones. The calzone was very soft and flavorful, and I especially liked the pesto dipping sauce. The sauce went great with the more crust-forward pieces and also complemented the fillings very well. I got a great cheese pull as well! The staff were really friendly and accommodating, although the restaurant itself was a little dimly lit. My first time here and and they gave great recommendations and explanations. Cute location and the place is clean and very chic. I got the Fatty B and it was so delicious and well balanced. My order was "Meet me in Saint Louis". Our party of six all got different calzones. We sat at a large table by the window and enjoyed the street view. We received a number for delivery to the table of our meals by staff. Food came out of the kitchen within 15 minutes or so. My meal was fantastic! It was large, hot, flavorful and the right amount. On a recent business trip to St. Louis, I wanted to meet-up with an old teammate by our office. They're from St. Louis but they wanted me to decide since I'm somewhat savvy with Yelp. :) Looking near the office, I saw there was a Sauce on the Side very close-by and this has been on my list of places to try in St. Louis for a couple years, so that's what we settled on and had a great experience! We walked over from the office and arrived around 11:30am and there were already a few people seated inside. The dining area was fairly large and there was a good-size bar to sit at, plus there were a couple restrooms too. There's a spot at the end of the bar where you place your order, which moved pretty quick. It took me a moment to look at the menu and the woman working the order kiosk was very friendly and helped explain the menu a bit and guided me on the calzone I should order for my first time here. Honestly, all of the staff working behind the counter were very nice and friendly. After placing our orders, we grabbed a table near the front of the restaurant and set our "playing card pagers" down so the staff knew where to bring our meals, while sipping an Urban Chestnut beer and catching up (Schnickelfritz is delicious!). I think we waited about 10-15 minutes, which was reasonable I thought. For lunch, I ordered the Meat Me in St. Louis calzone, which contains pepperoni, Italian sausage, PROVEL cheese, mascarpone-ricotta blend, and garlic oil, and has a meat red-sauce on the side for dipping/drizzling. The calzone was excellent - the bread to filling ratio was perfect. The calzone was easy to cut into and had a nice golden color. I really liked having the meat red-sauce separate from the calzone so it doesn't become a saucy mess. The sauce itself was great, savory and filled with meat, a nice supplement. The size and amount of food was excellent and filled me up nicely for lunch. I also felt the price was reasonable for the amount and quality of food (and drink) I got. I'm so glad I finally had Sauce on the Side! I really like this location - the staff were very friendly and helpful, plenty of seating, and the food was great! We had the Tony Montana calzone (my partner's favorite) and the Figgy Piggy. I'll probably try a basic sausage or pepperoni and cheese next time as the crust is more pretzel-y (soft/fluffy) than it is pizza-y and reminds me of a (much) better quality & larger hot pocket. The Italian salad was great and the beet salad was solid. I'd prefer the beets to either be thinly shaved or grated instead of sliced in thicker straws like they were (they're raw, not roasted). We split the beet salad which was HUGE and got basil bites to start - some kind of cheese/breadcrumb/meatballs with marinara that were delicious. They had ricotta and mascarpone and ooohhh that mascarpone made it so rich and creamy! Lots of great menu options and unique flavor combinations. And the calzones are huge too! This was my first experience at Sauce on the Side and eating a calzone! I really enjoyed my meal, I got the cock-a-doodle which contained Mac 'n Cheese, Roasted Chicken, Pancetta etc. The mac' n cheese and roasted chicken in the calzone made for a great combination. My meal was very well seasoned although the pancetta was a little bit on the salty side for my taste. Luckily the pancetta wasn't too salty to ruin the calzone. They came with lots of melted cheese and the meats and flavors were fantastic. The sauce comes on the side and the portions are decent. We also split the large Strawberry Fields salad and liked the mint seasoning in it and the salad dressing. The calzones are large so the portions are generous.
