The calzones were very tasty! Service was quick and everything came out warm! It was a fast causal atmosphere and we enjoyed celebrating a friends birthday! We walked out very full

Delicious calzones, but even better salads!! If you're looking healthy options in the area, their salads are the way to go! The Strawberry Fields salad was made with all fresh ingredients and it was SO good, I came back to try another salad (Beets Me! Which was also good.) Super affordable for the size of the salad and great employees working up front. Happy with experience while visiting STL!

for date night we decided to stop by the clayton spot because it wasn't packed, and the location was nice! I was very pleased with how spotless the place was, and the staff was very patient & friendly. i'm a bit picky so i custom-made a pesto chicken calzone with spicy red sauce. it was brought to us hot, fresh, fragrant, and perfect. it tasted delicious. (wish i could selfishly get double the sauce!) my ONLY tiny critique (this is solely bc of my preference) is that the soda fountain includes local faux versions of major brands. it they had coke/pepsi products, perfection. however that does add to the uniqueness, that's just my personal preference though (:

I stopped by Sauce on the Side for National Calzone Day to grab a calzone for a quick dinner. The parking is pretty limited (street parking), but they do have a 15-min pickup spot for curbside and quick pickups! I love pesto, so I knew I had to get the Roasty Toasty (pesto chicken plus some other fillings) and it did not disappoint-- the edges are a bit bread-heavy, but that's expected for calzones. The calzone was very soft and flavorful, and I especially liked the pesto dipping sauce. The sauce went great with the more crust-forward pieces and also complemented the fillings very well. I got a great cheese pull as well! The staff were really friendly and accommodating, although the restaurant itself was a little dimly lit. Will definitely be back to try the other calzones sometime!

This place was such a surprise. Basically a bunch of unique, homemade calzones to pick from, but they also have some healthy and yummy sounding salads. The staff is so friendly and fun. My first time here and and they gave great recommendations and explanations. Cute location and the place is clean and very chic. I got the Fatty B and it was so delicious and well balanced. The ricotta really paired well with the meat and the fresh onions were so good. My boyfriend got the Costanza, which was a little too spicy with the Italian sausage for my taste, but he really liked it. Totally recommend this place if you like calzones.

    1) I was given a total before I was asked if I was in the Rewards program. 2) The Pepperoni Basil bites were full of bread. I needed a magnifying glass to see the pepperoni.

Delicious first visit to Sauce on the Side. This is a fast casual establishment - one orders at the counter, then they'll bring your food out to you once ready. The calzones are huge! Are you famished? Sauce on the Side will get you refueled with their plate-sized calzones. Wanna save room for dessert? Cut that bad boy in half to save some for later. I ordered the "Roasty Toasty" - a chicken pesto option. It was awesome and hearty. My daughter, who's usual favorite is the "Meet Me in STL", branched out and tried the "Carmen". It was so good she'll work it into her rotation. Our third dining companion ALWAYS orders the "Cock-aDoodle Noodle", a mac & cheese filled concoction. If Mac & cheese is your jam, you should take her advice and try it. Ambiance is typical fast-casual vibe. I appreciate that even though it's fast casual, the staff checked on us occasionally to see if we needed anything. I'd definitely return for a filling, easy meal.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Sauce on the Side and was taken back by the 4+ composite score when I checked in. Could they really be that good I wondered. There are two area locations, but it's not chain. Parking is meter off street or nearby parking garage. The establishment is small, so you could easily drive by. Signage is adequate. The area in front of the store was debris free. The restaurant is larger than it appears as it's deep. I found the dining room and empty tables cleared and also clean. Ordering is in the back! Order at the counter. There are paper menus to review. The menu is simple and they really do one thing and they do it really well. A variety of calzones with salads. Soft drinks are self serve. My order was "Meet me in Saint Louis". Our party of six all got different calzones. We sat at a large table by the window and enjoyed the street view. We received a number for delivery to the table of our meals by staff. Food came out of the kitchen within 15 minutes or so. My meal was fantastic! It was large, hot, flavorful and the right amount. The sauce on the side was the perfect accompaniment to the calzone. The rest of the table felt the same. 6 for 6. I will absolutely return. 4.5 rounding up.

I've been here a couple times and I always enjoy it. They have great calzones! They have a good enough selection that you feel you have some choice, and that's always a good thing. They also have a good selection of craft beers, more than I'd expect for a restaurant this size, or any restaurant that doesnt have a bar (and a good many that do). The people that work there seem cool and it seems like a place cool people tend to go. I would definitely go here again - they have the best calzones Ive ever had.

Very solid calzone! Outside is oiled/seasoned which adds some great flavor to go alone with the crisp edges. I ordered the Costanza during my first visit. AMAZING! Dude at another table tried the All-American and enjoyed it so much he got a 2nd one to go! I will be back for sure!

The best Calzone I've had! It was fresh, not "heavy" or too doughy. I would recommend coming here! It took a bit to get our order, but that's because it's made to order, and it was definitely worth the wait!

The Best Dining Experience We've Had in St. Louis - Hands Down…read moreMy husband and I wanted to give our dear friends who are leaving St. Louis one last unforgettable meal from their bucket list, so I immediately recommended Peno. I used to be a regular at Rosé with the same talented Chef Pepe, and his food is truly to die for. We walked in on a beautiful day and were lucky to snag a spot in their small parking lot (parking in the area isn't the easiest, but it's worth it). Our server, Harry, made the evening even better right from the start. He had such a warm, calm, professional presence--the kind that's rare these days. We instantly remembered his name thanks to a fun Harry Potter / Harry and the Hendersons reference, and he handled everything with effortless skill. When our friends had parking trouble, Harry quickly offered helpful suggestions. Then, when it was time to order, he elevated our meal in the best way possible. My husband and I got our longtime favorite--the Roberto pizza from Rosé days--and Harry suggested adding sausage and peppers. That small tweak took something we already loved and made it 1000% better. Absolute perfection. Our friend ordered the spaghetti (her all-time favorite comfort meal), and after taking Harry's thoughtful recommendation, she declared it the best spaghetti she's ever had in her life. We finished with the cheesecake. I'm extremely picky about cheesecake, but this one did not disappoint--it was creamy, rich, and flawless. This was one of those legendary meals you remember forever. The kind where you leave thinking you could die happy. Chef Pepe's food, paired with Harry's outstanding service, made it a perfect night. If you're in St. Louis, do yourself a favor and go to Peno. You won't regret it. Thank you, Harry and team--you helped create a truly special send-off for our friends!

I also remembered seeing it featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, so we figured it had to be worth a try. When we arrived, we were asked if we had a reservation. We didn't, but noticed a few open seats at the bar and asked if we could sit there instead. The two bartenders welcomed us right away and told us they would take good care of us throughout the evening. My wife ordered an iced tea, and I started with an Old Fashioned. For an appetizer, we ordered the Toasted Ravioli ($14), which is handmade in-house and filled with ground beef, ricotta, and pecorino romano cheese, served with marinara sauce. It's one of the dishes featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. For dinner, my wife ordered the Chicken Marsala ($23), and I went with the Bolognese ($17), made with veal, pork, red wine gravy, cresta di gallo pasta, stracciatella, and Calabrian chili oil. The toasted ravioli arrived looking great. I tried one without the sauce first. The fresh pasta didn't fry up quite the way I expected. It was more flaky than crispy, and I was hoping for a little more crunch. The filling was decent but could have used a bit more seasoning and flavor. The marinara sauce also had a bitterness to it that wasn't my favorite. When our entrées arrived, both dishes looked and smelled wonderful. Unfortunately, the flavors didn't quite live up to the presentation. My wife's Chicken Marsala had good flavor overall, but the side pasta was very gummy, and the sauce again had a bitter note that seemed to overpower the dish. My Bolognese was the biggest disappointment of the evening. When I think of Bolognese or a rich meat ragù, I usually expect a wider pasta such as pappardelle. The cresta di gallo pasta wasn't my favorite choice for the dish, and it also had a gummy texture. The sauce itself suffered from the same bitterness that we noticed throughout the meal. Looking back, I probably should have ordered the Carbonara once I realized the Bolognese wasn't being served with the type of pasta I was hoping for. Overall, the meal was okay, but it didn't quite meet the expectations we had after seeing the restaurant featured on television and reading the reviews. The service was excellent, and the bartenders did a fantastic job taking care of us. While this visit was a bit disappointing, there were plenty of other dishes on the menu that looked great, and I would be willing to give Anthonino's another try and order something different.
