Thank you Yelp and Trip Advisor! Unassuming place with a real focus on food. Weird, I know, which makes this restaurant special. Had the blackened catfish sandwich which had a crunchy slaw on it. Zippy zowie spicy. Perfect! The cornbread was buttery lovely with a zing too. Husbo had the brisket sandwich and added a special spicy sauce from the table that complimented it. Yum! read more

Best BBQ I've had outside of the south. We always get the cornbread and tots. This time we also got catfish bites and the blackened shrimp po'boy. Their service is so fast and dialed in, super nice staff. The food comes out piping hot and absolutely delicious. read more

This place is a perfect example of "don't judge a book by its cover." Believe me when I say, it's worth the stop. Recommended to us by a family friend as one of her top 3 places to visit in Flagstaff, this understated gem offers Cajun & BBQ Eats. We enjoyed the 1/2 lb pulled pork (comes with 4 slider buns) a basket of some of the best sweet potato fries I've ever had and the 1/3 pint of slaw. The pork was super moist and had the perfect Smokey flavor. They serve it with a bottle of sweet and a bottle of spicy sauce. The slaw is a vinegar based slaw (no Mayo) and has jalapeño in it for the perfect kick. So next time you head to Flagstaff be sure to put Satchmo's Cajun and BBQ on your list. read more

Don't let the hole in the wall outside appearance phase you. This place was so good. I have to eat gluten free and there were several options to choose from. We had the pulled pork, blackened fish , tator tots and the coleslaw. We left nothing behind! We regretted not getting the Mac and cheese after seeing it but everything was fantastic! Don't hesitate! The food and service was great! We have been there a few times and take the 120-mile drive when we want great BBQ. My wife and I grew up in BBQ country and take a BBQ tour occasionally. Satchmo's is the best in Arizona in our opinion. read more

Great outdoor patio that is pet friendly! And they even provide water for the dogs. Three of us shared the brisket (not too dry), pulled pork (moist and flavorful), blackened catfish with jambalaya (quite the kick so don't order if you aren't a fan of spicy food!), a side of coleslaw (vinegar based), and potato salad (great flavor with a mild spice). Well, after a semi good visit even though they forgot some of my food I placed to go. I thought I would visit them again tonight for take-out. The Po-Boy bread was burnt and so was the sweet potato fries. I doubt I will be returning after two mishaps back to back within a couple of days. read more

Never been to Flagstaff, but this place was recommended by a friend. It was a great pit stop since we were coming from Phoenix and on our way to Page. It's conveniently located right behind a Shell gas station too. Cute little Creole restaurant with decent prices for big portions. If you're on a restricted diet, I would not recommend this place due to all the seasonings / flavors used. However if you love seasoned food -- can't go wrong here. Ordered the following for less than $40: -Pulled Pork w/ 2 sides (Mac&Cheese & Tots) -Blackened Catfish over Jambalaya w/ 2 sides (Corn bread & Tots) -Fried fish with rice Barbecue sauce and orange sauce is pretty yummy with all of the items. It's was a little hard to find at first. It's tucked behind the Shell station and there isn't a lot of parking. Besides that this place is good, cheap, BBQ! Many of the entrees less than $10 I will definitely be back to try more of their items! I got the blackened catfish over jambalaya and the gumbo with 2 extra sides of corn bread and potato salad. Catfish seasoned well came with an extra side sauce that was not needed. Jambalaya was delicious! Had good amount of peppers, onions, sausage, tomatoes, and pork bits! Cornbread was interestingly good. It came like a thick slice of regular bread with some peppers in it that weren't too hot and still had the sweetness that you usually get with cornbread. Stopped by on our drive to Phoenix at the recommendation of our friends. Casual quick service with paper table cloths and crayons! Louis Armstrong inspired decor with quotes and music notes on the walls. This place has a great vibe! We ordered the chicken sandwich, which my husband loved, with 2 sides, potato salad and smoked baked beans. Then we ordered a full rack of ribs (some for now, more for later) with 2 larger sides (1 smoked beans and 1 coleslaw) The portions were perfect. The ribs came with a rub and the seasoning of the ribs on it, not sauce, and they fell off the bone. The sauce was on the table, both gluten free and tasty. I have a gluten allergy and they were able to answer my questions about the food, which gives me peace of mind when eating out. We look forward to stopping again our next time in town. read more

Covid safe with precautions. Seats adequately spaced and servers wearing masks. We ordered half rack of lamb and fried shrimp Po Boy. Both were tasty choices and serving size was just right. Finished it off with bread pudding. Order it and take it to go if can't finish. It's that good. Service was attentive and fast. And restroom facilities was clean for unisex use. You order at the counter and they place a paper table cover on the table for you. But you can't be seated until after you ordered. We ordered a 1-3 person combo with 1/2 rack of ribs, pulled pork, and beef and a blackened catfish for all 5 of us (~$50). Small portions but we were satisfied without overly full. blackened catfish and sweet potato fries: 5 stars and the highlight of the meal. The rest: 3 stars ish. We had not been there for over a year, and were disappointed in the changes. They no longer offer plates, just 1/2 and 1 lb choices of meats, along with "slider buns". And 1/2 and 1 pint potato salad, and some cornbread (which is fabulous!) The quality of the meats we ordered - brisket and pulled pork - was sub par, being dry and over-cooked. Way too expensive for what you get. We won't be going back. read more

Satchmo's is the friendliest restaurant I have ever visited, but more importantly, the food is AMAZING! Satchmo's specializes in Cajun, BBQ food and it was perfect. We were visiting with our pets up north and they loved our girls. They brought them treats, came out to give them pets and made us feel at home. Tons of shady places to sit on the patio with the fur babies and a fun and festive interior to relax for dinner. We ordered the Jumbalaya, Ribs and the nacho tots.The ribs were so tender and fell right off the bone. They have spicy and sweet BBQ sauce that you can add on top, which was finger licking good. I got the mac and cheese as well as the corn bread. The corn bread came with butter and bits of jalapeno mixed in. The nacho tots were crispy and the toppings were a plenty. Definitely worth a visit if you are up in Flag. One of my favorite restaurants and we will be back again! read more

WOW if I could give this place 10 stars I would. The food, the service, and the atmosphere was awesome. We ordered the "lil moe" (I think that wat it was called) and geez do you get a bang for ur buck. It comes with a 1/2 rack of ribs, your choice of beef, pork, or chicken, 1/2 pint of jumblya, and 1/2 tater tots or fries. We had the ribs, pork, beef, tots, and an extra side of Mac and cheese. Ok so I'll start this take with the ribs. They were freaking awesome, fall off the bone, melt in your mouth and perfect with the sweet barbecue sauce on top. Next, the pork was super tasty and came with 4 lil toasted slider buns so you could make your own mini pulled pork sandwich or eat it plain! Not gonna lie tho, the beef brisket really blew me away. I'm from Texas so I will claim to know barbecue pretty darn well, but man, I've never had beef brisket to flavor full, moist, and melt in ur mouth. Oh my goodness it was tasty. The Mac and cheese was also super good, I'd even say worth the $4.50. It's super cheesey on top and sprinkled with tater tot bits which add a surprising amount of flavor! The jumblya was a little spicy and flavorful, but clearly not in my main focus of the meal, I was mesmerized by the meat, not gonna lie. The tater tots were super crispy and crunchy and topped with a Cajun spice that added a tasty twist to your traditional tots. The staff was super friendly and helpful and the restaurant was super clean. It was a small little joint, but felt warm and cozy with frank Sinatra playing in the background and jazz paintings on the walls. Very good brisket, chicken and macaroni ... and friendly and quick service too. But keep in mind the portions are huge ... the "side" of mac is more than one person could eat as a meal. But I gather that's part of the experience, and they are very willing to help you box up what's left and bring it home. Will definitely go back. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Jamie T.

The concept of Satchmo's goes as far back as I can remember. Family, friends and great food are ideals that I was raised with. Hailing from the Midwest, fresh foods and quality BBQ Was mainstays. With the bayou just to the south, Cajun & Creole foods commonly found their way into family gatherings & backyard get-togethers. After moving to Flagstaff, I quickly realized I found a place to call home permanently. The next step was making a dream a reality. After a short stint catering out of a rent-by-the hour commercial kitchen, Satchmo's landed in an old 300-square-foot block building, offering only drive-thru and carry-out service. Another year passed and a second and final move has put us where I now have a dining room, outdoor patio and liquor license.

Sandwiches come with a side of house chips. They are fried until a darker golden brown color, but aren't burnt. This gives a great kettle chip-like crunch. Even with different sized chips, they are very evenly fried with all chips being the same texture. They are salted the perfect amount. (4/5) Aleppo Pepper Pastrami sub Tomato Soup ($22.75) - This place is famous for their pastrami, and I can tell the quality. It's cooked on the griddle until it develops crisp edges. It's fatty, but the fat is rendered so there are no chewy and leathery parts. The meat is extremely tender and thinly sliced. It's honestly almost like bacon in texture, but the taste is completely different, with the exterior spices and pepper making a huge impact along with the rich concentrated meatiness inside. The bread is a nice toasted sourdough, not strongly sour in flavor, but definitely noticeable. The bottom slice is slathered with plenty of nopales studded cream cheese. It's added in a large amount and is an extremely creamy and fatty substance yet somehow doesn't overwhelm the sandwich. It's warm but not melty. The nopales are clearly there but I didn't find it to contribute much. The pastrami is layered on top of that followed by a ton of sweet brown caramelized onions that are very tender. An entire green chile, roasted and super smoky, is above that. Finally, aleppo mustard is spread on the top slice of bread. Between the green chile and the aleppo, there's a slight warmth that tinges the sandwich. It's nothing too spicy. Instead of chips, we opted to sub the Tomato Soup (no fee). It's very homestyle, full of tomato richness in a thick blend. It has a strong tangy tomato essence. There's basil oil drizzled on top for a boost of freshness. The soup is unfortunately quite a bit too acidic for my tastes, but that's only by itself! While very acidic, the soup is actually great as a balance to the sandwich (along with the pickle of course) since there's so much richness and fat coming in between the bread. We were considering visiting again for our 2 full days in Flagstaff, but weren't able to make it because they close so early at 6! This place has been featured on the Food Network's "Top Places to Eat," so it's easy to understand why they're so popular. The tables are also somewhat small, so things can feel a bit cramped once the restaurant gets busy. The food was incredible and the drinks were equally impressive. They have a great selection of cocktails, beer, wine, and mocktails. The Basil Lemon Drop made with house-made limoncello was especially refreshing on a warm day. For our table of eight, we started with the bacon marmalade bruschetta, goat cheese bruschetta, and the wood-fired stracciatella with prosciutto. Everything was fantastic. The bruschetta boards each came with four pieces, and the stracciatella included four crostinis plus plenty of prosciutto to share. For entrees, we ordered several pizzas including the Ms. Piggy, Carnivore, and Belgio Dolce -- the same pizza Guy Fieri featured -- along with lasagna, pesto spaghetti, and rigatoni. Every dish was excellent, and the pizzas were large enough to easily feed two people. Even after all that food, we still made room for dessert and ordered the crème brûlée cheesecake, tiramisu, cannoli, and a couple espresso martinis. I only tried the cannoli because I was completely stuffed by then, but it absolutely delivered. The service was outstanding. Jennifer did an amazing job taking care of our large group and making sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. I also loved the option on the menu where you can buy a 6-pack for the kitchen crew to show appreciation for their hard work. We figured one wasn't enough for the whole staff, so we bought five 6-packs instead. This would have easily been a 5-star experience if not for a couple issues. Originally, we made a reservation for 16 several weeks in advance. We received a confirmation the night before, but then got a cancellation notice just a few hours before the reservation. Our first phone call to the restaurant ended with us being disconnected, though thankfully the second call resolved everything. We later found out their reservation system automatically cancels large reservations unless they're booked as private dining. We also reduced our party size to 8, which helped. The other issue came at the end of the meal when the manager asked our table to leave. I understand we had been there for about two and a half hours and they likely wanted to turn the table, especially during a busy graduation weekend. Still, there were no time limits mentioned when we booked the reservation, so it left a sour note at the end of what had otherwise been an amazing dining experience. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend this place if you're in Flagstaff and craving Italian food -- just don't expect to keep your table for the entire night.
