    Beef brisket
    Victor N.

I tried Satchmo's in Flagstaff and ordered the beef brisket. The brisket was a bit dry for my taste, though the BBQ sauces were flavorful and helped bring some balance to the dish. The pricing felt a little high for what was served, especially considering the portion and quality. That said, the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, which made the experience more enjoyable. Overall, it was an okay meal with great service, but not something that stood out for the price or would recommend.

    Burnt ends, full pound

I was always a fan of Satchmo's. It took my son three visits to finally get the perfect dish for him - Burnt Ends. He never had burnt ends before so I told him it's all about the crunch. He was surprised how much he loved it. And combined with the toasted buns, pickled onions, and fresh pickle slices, he had this look on his face of "why did it take me so long." We also got sliced chicken thighs which were awesome for a lighter non-smoked dish. Great Cajun sauce. Our two sides: Dirty rice which my son didn't enjoy but I inhaled. And jambalaya which is probably better than dirty rice but more filling with the diced sausages. So good.

The staff here is amazing. I would just visit here for just the service! The food is really good too! The vibe is very mom and pop which we love and we were really glad to have found this place during our trip. We ordered a bunch of stuff to try and they were kind and accomodating to let us get half portions of things. The mac and cheese. Star. Get it. Brisket, good, not the best but still juicy and tender. Tots, delicious. I would skip the gumbo and jambalaya, they were ok at best but it really hit the spot for us and cannot complain!

    Cornbread (small)

We drove here after Bearizona and the Grand Canyon, and it was a great meal to finish the day! It's in an unassuming plaza next to a gas station, and you order food at the counter. The gumbo had that rich roux flavor, and you can sub jambalaya or dirty rice for $3.99 (our cashier recommended the jambalaya so that's what I did!). We also went with the ribs based off his recommendation, and they weren't kidding about fall off the bone! Sweet and spicy bbq sauce were available at the table, but it was delicious even without! The cornbread wasn't what we expected, but it turned out even better! More surface area for butter and a nice charred taste. We also ordered the beignets which came covered with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar. A little denser than cafe du monde but fried dough is delicious either way!

We went here last weekend while in Flagstaff and got food to go. The inside is small and quaint, with some dine in tables that are separated from an ordering/pick up counter. There's some retail items for purchase such as seasoning too, nice presentation! I love the menu options, as I didn't expect to find Cajun in Flagstaff lol. Anyway upon getting our order, we were a bit dismayed at just how small the "small" sides were.. looking in the bag, I was certain they forgot something. We thought the small sides should be labeled down, such as "teeny" . Anyway, once we started eating, we found the portion was big enough as we were stuffed! My husband got the jambalaya with a small side of mac & cheese. I got the red beans and rice side with a side of the SW coleslaw. The red beans and rice and jambalaya were fire! The macaroni was different.. but good. I think it was one of the cheese in there that's distinct but I couldn't put my finger on what kind of cheese it was. The coleslaw I was not a fan of. I would definitely go here again when back in flagstaff!

Trust the reviews This place is good. I would order the whole menu if I could. Also the service is friendly and the vibe is chill. Will always stop here if I'm passing through.

Solid Cajun food in flagstaff! We came here for lunch and got the lunch special, which gives you a sandwich with tator tots! We ate there and the table has various different bbq sauces which was fun to sample. For dessert - we got the bread pudding which was very good Service: good service Ambience: fun little restaurant with outdoor seating

We've been here twice and I think my reviews from the first time would be much better than the second. The first time we had blackened swai, catfish bites, and tots. We sat outside and the meal was quite tasty. The second time around we sat inside and folks in my party had brisket and pulled pork and gumbo. It was loud and the food was not as delicious. I'd give it another shot though for sure.

This is a little diamond in the rough restaurant! The location is a whole in the wall in an old strip right behind a gas station,so if you are going fancy this isn't the place. The inside of the restaurant has a cute, warm, Louisiana, jazz atmosphere. Now for the food...Everything we had was fantastic! Just the right amount of heat and they are very clear on their menu what's hot and what's not. Their cornbread was very good and each piece came with its own packet of butter.. Not too sweet, which makes it great to eat with the spicy and flavored meals. The Mac N Cheese was phenomenal! It's a tiny place and you order at the front before you get your seats, so prepare for the possibility of not getting a table right away if it's busy. Can't wait to go again when we visit Flagstaff.

Very nice and tidy and clean

Was looking for good Cajun style food, stopped by here. There's parking in front, but the space is close to a gas station. I parked around back and walked around. You order first before sitting, I ordered the blackened catfish on rice, and a large cornbread (6 pieces), and fountain drink. A medium cornbread is 3 pieces. I inhaled the blackened fish on rice, it was really good, and I forgot it was spicy so it hit me! It was an enjoyable amount of spicy! The cornbread isn't spicy at all, and they give you plenty of butter and honey. Their sweet tea was also really good! It was nice and quiet here, quite a few to-go orders. I was a little disappointed about how little of rice I got on the order. And the rice was sticking to the brown paper underneath it. But other than that, this place was really good! I'd definitely return and try more options!

We popped in on a Monday morning hoping to score some great grub and we certainly found some! Cubano ($20.95) - Starting with the bread - it's really fluffy, not toasted or pressed as with usual cubanos. Unfortunately, it's probably a little too light for the sandwich because some parts get mushy from being soaked in all the dijonnaise. The dijonnaise is very sweet, creamy with a mustardy zing. I think they add a bit too much, making the sandwich more fatty and messy to eat than I like (not to mention what I stated before about it soaking into the bread). The meat is fantastic. Both porchetta and ham are griddled on the flat top, giving them a developed and concentrated edge. The ham is to the point of being like country ham, while the porchetta still has great seasoned porky flavor. I believe they griddle the swiss cheese alongside the meat. It melts and crisps up into a cheese skirt, adding a fantastic texture to the sandwich. There's a lot of crinkle cut pickles underneath the meat, but it's not enough acid to cut through all that fat. Sandwiches come with a side of house chips. They are fried until a darker golden brown color, but aren't burnt. This gives a great kettle chip-like crunch. Even with different sized chips, they are very evenly fried with all chips being the same texture. They are salted the perfect amount. (4/5) Aleppo Pepper Pastrami sub Tomato Soup ($22.75) - This place is famous for their pastrami, and I can tell the quality. It's cooked on the griddle until it develops crisp edges. It's fatty, but the fat is rendered so there are no chewy and leathery parts. The meat is extremely tender and thinly sliced. It's honestly almost like bacon in texture, but the taste is completely different, with the exterior spices and pepper making a huge impact along with the rich concentrated meatiness inside. The bread is a nice toasted sourdough, not strongly sour in flavor, but definitely noticeable. The bottom slice is slathered with plenty of nopales studded cream cheese. It's added in a large amount and is an extremely creamy and fatty substance yet somehow doesn't overwhelm the sandwich. It's warm but not melty. The nopales are clearly there but I didn't find it to contribute much. The pastrami is layered on top of that followed by a ton of sweet brown caramelized onions that are very tender. An entire green chile, roasted and super smoky, is above that. Finally, aleppo mustard is spread on the top slice of bread. Between the green chile and the aleppo, there's a slight warmth that tinges the sandwich. It's nothing too spicy. Instead of chips, we opted to sub the Tomato Soup (no fee). It's very homestyle, full of tomato richness in a thick blend. It has a strong tangy tomato essence. There's basil oil drizzled on top for a boost of freshness. The soup is unfortunately quite a bit too acidic for my tastes, but that's only by itself! While very acidic, the soup is actually great as a balance to the sandwich (along with the pickle of course) since there's so much richness and fat coming in between the bread. (5/5) Proper Meats + Provisions definitely serves some great sandwiches. We were considering visiting again for our 2 full days in Flagstaff, but weren't able to make it because they close so early at 6! There was a line out the door when we arrived, but since we had reservations, we were seated immediately. This place has been featured on the Food Network's "Top Places to Eat," so it's easy to understand why they're so popular. The tables are also somewhat small, so things can feel a bit cramped once the restaurant gets busy. The food was incredible and the drinks were equally impressive. They have a great selection of cocktails, beer, wine, and mocktails. The Basil Lemon Drop made with house-made limoncello was especially refreshing on a warm day. For our table of eight, we started with the bacon marmalade bruschetta, goat cheese bruschetta, and the wood-fired stracciatella with prosciutto. Everything was fantastic. The bruschetta boards each came with four pieces, and the stracciatella included four crostinis plus plenty of prosciutto to share. For entrees, we ordered several pizzas including the Ms. Piggy, Carnivore, and Belgio Dolce -- the same pizza Guy Fieri featured -- along with lasagna, pesto spaghetti, and rigatoni. Every dish was excellent, and the pizzas were large enough to easily feed two people. Even after all that food, we still made room for dessert and ordered the crème brûlée cheesecake, tiramisu, cannoli, and a couple espresso martinis. I only tried the cannoli because I was completely stuffed by then, but it absolutely delivered. The service was outstanding. Jennifer did an amazing job taking care of our large group and making sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. I also loved the option on the menu where you can buy a 6-pack for the kitchen crew to show appreciation for their hard work. We figured one wasn't enough for the whole staff, so we bought five 6-packs instead. This would have easily been a 5-star experience if not for a couple issues. Originally, we made a reservation for 16 several weeks in advance. We received a confirmation the night before, but then got a cancellation notice just a few hours before the reservation. Our first phone call to the restaurant ended with us being disconnected, though thankfully the second call resolved everything. We later found out their reservation system automatically cancels large reservations unless they're booked as private dining. We also reduced our party size to 8, which helped. The other issue came at the end of the meal when the manager asked our table to leave. I understand we had been there for about two and a half hours and they likely wanted to turn the table, especially during a busy graduation weekend. Still, there were no time limits mentioned when we booked the reservation, so it left a sour note at the end of what had otherwise been an amazing dining experience. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend this place if you're in Flagstaff and craving Italian food -- just don't expect to keep your table for the entire night.
