This Sarku Japan location continues to be my very favorite when it comes to eateries in the food court at the South Shore Plaza. I stopped by there one day this week for lunch and it was great. The place was very busy at around noon when I got there but the line moved pretty fast so I got to place my order and receive my meal very quickly. They are currently offering a special deal on chicken teriyaki which includes their chicken teriyaki entree (chicken teriyaki, rice and vegetables) plus two spring rolls and a fountain soda. You get all of this for just $11.99 which is a bargain if ever there was one. So I went with that for my lunch. Everything was flavorful and I really enjoyed everything. Love sarku ever since i was a kid. It's that quick easy to eat meal and seeing the evolution of the inflation of pricing haha but understandable in today's economy. Walk up, chicken teriyaki with rice and double meat, request 2 scoops of sauce personally and take it for lunch and dinner haha. Chicken always tender, never dry. Occasionally I'll get combo beef and chicken. The veggies i skip on, but they got em. Now depending on who's working the line at the meat part of the hot top grill, I'll choose to get a plate haha. It is a convenient place to eat especially after a mall trip. The value is really good for the food, ordered a chicken teriyaki for 10 dollars and we received a hefty amount of food. Overall, a reliable place to eat at the mall but ultimately, still food court quality albeit a much better option than the others. It tastes good but not great, just about a tier higher than what you would expect from any fast food or chain restaurant. There are two kinds of people in the world: those who eat to not die, and those who eat because they enjoy food. In case my Yelp page didn't give you an indication, I am in the latter group. Initially I wanted to give three stars. The food came out hot, the service was very fast, and the portion size was generous for the price. However there's more to food than just fast service and large portions. Being someone who enjoys eating good stuff, I do not feel any desire to order from them again, hence two stars. I ordered the teriyaki chicken on fried rice (also comes with veggies). This dish was bland and homogenous all the way through, despite the fact that it was made up of three seemingly distinct ingredients. I may be more forgiving when it comes to the rice and veggies, but not when it comes to the chicken. Having the teriyaki just taste like weak soy sauce does not inspire my taste buds to jump for joy. The other ingredients in teriyaki (brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey, and mirin) did not make themselves known... none of them! To their credit, there is soy and duck sauce provided. Still, I'd like to enjoy a meal as is and add sauces as enhancers. I don't want to use an ungodly number of packets to bring out some flavor. As a final note: it is true I might be being a little bit harsh for a location in a mall food court. Went here a week ago to pick up 2 orders. They both had chicken teriyaki but one had added shrimp and I am HIGHLY allergic to seafood!!! I mentioned before anything was cooked about the allergy and the guy said "no problem". So I stated AGAIN how allergic I was and I can't touch it. He continues to not say a word and look at his grill buddy, eye roll again and then smiled at each other. Good good I fell in love with sarku Japan at the Taunton galleria mall that is until the mall closed down and couldn't have it anymore and they were a good 4.5 stars. I was so excited when I saw Braintree mall had one so I went to try it out. Portion is smaller and it's not as good but it's still enjoyable. Anytime I'm up that why I'll grab some. They used to be generous with the amount of chicken they give per order, but lately, not so much. I come here regularly when i want a quick meal. I always get soba noodles instead of the white rice, and usually skip out on the veggies. Every once in a while i'll get a good amount of chicken teriyaki, but its once in a blue moon. I normally ask for extra sauce on top for that added flavor, and it makes the noodles taste that much better. I went in to grab lunch today and i wasn't exactly pleased with what I left with. Sarku Japan is one of my favorite mall food. Nothing fancy, just deliciously marinated and tender chicken with either white or fried rice along with steamed veggies. Sounds simple but it is super delicious. Although I haven't had it in a while and I feel like it tastes a little bit more "healthy" than usual. Okay, I admit it, I left work a little early today to go shopping! My friend got a tuna and California roll with a water. Everything total came to just about $15, which was not bad, expect that my "Vegetable Dish" was really simply a side missing the main course :( Oh well! They run a special of the day (today was Chicken Teriyaki) for $4.99 that comes with steamed rice and vegetables (more on that in a sec) - which EVERYONE orders. You can double meat that for an additional $0.99. All with a big ass drink for $1.89. So, the steamed rice and vegetables. They have big rice cookers which I marveled at during my 10 minute wait. But they don't cook the rice in them. No, they cook the rice in the back and then lug the finished pots of rice so they can sit in the cookers up front. Odd. The veggies? Yeah, shredded lettuce, a few broccoli florets, and maybe a carrot slice. Gross and uninspired. All the food comes lumped on top of itself in a styrofoam container. A tasteless blob, really. It's not busy here today, there's no excuse for me having to ask for napkins twice before the waitress brought them. My husband asked for spicy mayonnaise when his meal was delivered. Flavors are good.Noodles are a little gluey being pre cooked way ahead of time. The meats are always flavorful and the veggies are cooked so that they are still crisp. Service is a bit slow but that is to be expected at a mall location. I'm always amazed at their toothpick coding system, different colored toothpicks in different areas of the food containers to mean different things. I guess it beats having to write every order.
