Having driven past the place about 100 times, finally stopped in. My only regret is that I waited so long! Dining area in the back is spacious, but I chose to sit at the bar and have a burger and a beer. Very much a "locals" place. The bartender was very friendly, as were the folks sitting at the bar. The restaurant has what I would call comfort food. We went on prime rib night. Reasonable cut of beef cooked to my request. Potatoes and vegetables on the side. My wife had a grilled burger, very good. The size, taste and supporting grilled onions made it great. Here is where they lose points, it's drab inside. No windows and dark. The night we were there they were very busy but they only have two wait staff. We were there at 6:00 with our reservations we did not get our order taken almost an hour later we finally get food about 8:15 and we finished dinner at 9:30 so 3 and 1/2 hour for just go out for a simple dinner that's not a good standard. read more

This place has a cool old-school vibe. Great food, fair prices and a very friendly staff. The experience is like popping into a local roadside seafood place somewhere in New England. But it's just minutes away right here in Somerville. It's a nice alternative to the corporate, mass production chain restaurants. I'm not sure how I haven't been here before today. There's a Sarah Jane's undercurrent in Somerset County that it has the best prime rib amongst other things so we ventured out for a 5pm dinner and was welcomed by the friendliest staff. My dinner choice - 6oz filet mignon, sautéed onions, a baked potato with a side salad. Old school. Flavor over the top! Clean plate club! My party had the stuffed sea bass w crabmeat special. This place is dying for a makeover-furniture from the 1960s-- musty and dank -we went on a Friday night and they had two young girls splitting up at least 15 tables. So obviously service was exceptionally slow !The pork chop is still outstanding but the prices are ridiculously high and serving sizes are tiny-- unfortunately,I don't think I'll be returning because they are so overpriced for mostly average food and The atmosphere is downright depressing. there are far better restaurants within minutes of this that are clean, and sharp,that serve fresh ,larger portions and their price point is the same or less. read more

I have lived in Hillsborough for 15 years now and pass Sarah Jane's everyday. Last night I tried it for the first time with two of my girlfriends and we absolutely loved it! I would go back and plan to! It is a hidden gem!! My friends had chicken ( lemon pepper and Cajun ) from the skinny menu. They got the rice as a side and we had to as our waitress how they made the rice because it was SO good ( told simply salt and water). It was fluffy and for rice flavorful needing NO spices or butter. I had the French onion soup and all I can say is OMG, so good! I also had the filet mignon with shrimp scampi ( based on other reviews)... well it did not disappoint at all! Steak cooked perfectly and the shrimp scampi was made with jumbo shrimp and just the right amount of butter and garlic topped with bread crumb! I am SO pleased with Sarah Jane's! Yes it's old school with decorations and lighting, BUT that is what makes it a unique place to go! Reminds me of my childhood and absolutely LOVE it! My friends and I will be back ( bringing others)! What a gem! We finally stopped in and what a surprise! The shrimp scampi was so tender and tasted like my Italian grandma's. My husband had an amazing burger. I have been to Sarah Jane's back in the very early 80's and always enjoyed the Prime Rib Dinners. Fast forward to 2023 and the meal was very disappointing! My steak was mediocre at best. They should be embarrassed to serve such a small Baked Potato! The house salad was terrible! With the price increases due to inflation this is NOT the spot for dinner! I love Sarah James. Food is tasty, soups are great and I love the sirloin steak! Only comment I would like to make is that portions have become smaller. The rolls used to be bigger in size, the steaks are smaller (6 oz filet mignon is 25 dollars), baked potatoes are smaller and even the salad plates. This was a great little stop!! LOVE the people!!! Our waitress was so sweet and accommodating. She even got her husband ( pie maker and bartender) to come out to give me his pie crust recipe. Then he gave me pie crust to take home!!!! The decor was a little outdated, but cute, with Amish patterns and washboards on the walls. The food was not impressive looking, but just eat it. Extra napkins should be automatically delivered with handheld food like burgers. Not even asked if we wanted coffee. Why were we here in the first place? I had dinner on Saturday night at this bar restaurant, which is very close to Duke Farms. It was crowded, mostly with seniors and late middle aged persons. There was a strange situation at the beginning where they wouldn't even tell us how long the wait was. We ended up seating ourselves at a small table by the bar, outside the main dining area. They don't usually have table service there, but they served us on the side. I had a burger with swiss and mushrooms, which was excellent. The fries were good as well. One comment I have about the menu is that there were not a lot of options to choose from as far as price-- the burger was $10 and all the other entrees on the menu were $20 or above. Came back to check it out as my favorite waitress from my fave breakfast place works here evenings. Friday night so pretty busy. Way too loud. Starting. We skipped the very basic salad bar. The Buffalo chicken appetizer has a sweet Buffalo sauce with just enough kick, and wouldn't think twice about making this my meal next time....then we get to our meals, I got the burger which was fresher than the air we were breathing! It was juicy and cooked to perfection!!!! My wife got the chicken parm that had One of the best marinara sauces I've ever had. The chicken; was delightful. Sarah James's is a small, family owned hidden gem. Honestly, I'm not sure why I don't come here more often. As of my most recent visit, I started with the French Onion Soup which was absolutely amazing, moved on to the Veil Parm which was very delicious, and ended with the warm Brownie with Ice Cream. All of the portions are always more than enough to fill you up. If you don't have an appetite, plan to take food home with you. Besides the food, the atmosphere is that of which you expect of a small family owned restaurant. Everyone who works there is nice and doesn't mind helping you. The restaurant and bathrooms are clean. This isn't a five start restaurant, but you will get what you pay for at this establishment. Good food, and a good dining experience for a price that won't break the bank. read more

I called the restaurant and ordered a take-out portion of shrimp scampi from the online menu. The price was $10.99. When I went to pick up the order, they charged me $11.99 (plus tax.) I questioned the price difference, and the cashier shrugged and said "Oh, our prices changed." When they gave me my order, I noticed the sauce was leaking through the brown paper bag. Inside the bag, my order was packaged in one of those styrofoam containers, and the sauce had spilled out. I showed to the girl and she brought it in the back and simply wrapped the container in cellophane wrap. By the time I got it home, much of the sauce had leaked out. I was very disappointed. This was a "takeout" item, not a "take home" item. Perhaps they need to update their online menu and use foil containers going forward. read more

From the outside it doesn't look like much, but once inside you feel like you are visiting family. I ordered the NY Strip which was cooked perfectly for me.
