Rating has moved from my original 4 stars to 5 stars. We sat at the bar as usual. The bread is served warm and crispy on the outside - so yummy. I ordered the Baccala and the cod was so delicate that it resembled a Chilean sea bass. The sauce was perfectly seasoned and the olives and capers gave it a nice touch of salt. I can't lie, it's very noisy as the acoustics could be improved upon, but that doesn't take away from the fabulous meals.Service is impeccable while still being personable. I walked in and was very impressed, appeared to have great ambiance as the reviews stated, this point I'm excited for my dinner. I left 23% tip. When I got home and opened the lid for my dinner I was shocked, presentation, it looked like it was ran over, the meat looked like Taco Bell processed meat, no flavor at all, salad had a hint of Cesar Dressing. After a day wandering around the area we stumbled upon this great Italian spot in the tiny town of Monterey. What a find. The host was friendly and conversational as we were seated and the server knew the menu and the specials. She checked on us frequently but unobtrusively; our glasses were never empty. The calamari was a perfect appetizer as was the premeal bread with dipping oil. The Ravioli was delicious and the pasta seemed very fresh. The Veal special rolled with ham, mozzarella and wilted spinach was exceptional. Delicious food and ample portions. Service was good, a bit slow because of the crowd on Wednesday evening. Pork chop special (1 lb chop, parmigiana style) was delicious and will serve 2 more meals. The tomato sauce (gravy) was very fresh and tasty. My best girl had gnocchi Gorgonzola that was vey good too. The place was a bit loud making conversation a bit tough at our table. I know they offered spaghetti but I probably would've sacrificed the spaghetti for another cutlet...btw the sauce was excellent! I also find the prices for many of these dishes a little too high...I know their food was freshly made but I felt that the eggplant parmigiana appetizer came out steaming hot as if they just cut a piece that was made much earlier and just microwaved it...plus no layers were seen...the ricotta, etc. Suggesting the chef may want to try n make Eggplant Rollatini instead? As far as "sweet tea" since it is a staple drink in Tn, they did not have any...again....so right there I was QUITE disappointed. And to top it off, I was looking SO forward to having a cup of coffee at the end of my meal with REAL HALF n HALF NOT little "coffee mate creamers" that would be served in some rinky-dink diner! It was embarrassing to see this given in such an "upscale, fancy" restaurant as such..."Coffee Mate" chemicals are SO UNHEALTHY for EVERYONE - please look at the ingredients. And Half n Half has such a natural and BETTER taste in coffee anyway. I did compare this restaurant to Forte's in Crossville, considering they have people waiting on line outside and also reservations are a must there! and at least they have sweet tea and REAL HALF n HALF for coffee. We had four different dinners. The spaghetti was watery, the salmon was over cooked, the rigatoni was pretty good and lasagna which I had, had pureed meat in it that had a liver taste. A lovely dinner to celebrate a birthday! We started out with the calamari which was tender and fried to perfection. We both tried a pasta dish. My husband had the pasta special which was the paperdelle - handmade with mussels, clams, and shrimp in a lovely pink sauce with mushrooms, onions, and green peas. I tried the spaghetti and meatballs which was also wonderful. The portions were generous and we had to take some home. Since we were celebrating, we had to try the tiramisu. Both were delicious. Our server, Emma, was quite nice, well informed and personable. The ambiance is okay. It's a small place with brick walls and tile floors making it a little loud for casual conversation. They don't take reservations for small parties, so we arrived early to ensure getting a seat. That didn't happen. It was crowded with people waiting outside and a fifty minute wait. We went to a restaurant next door and had a drink while waiting. They called us about an hour later. In being Italian, going to Italian restaurants can be a little scary....the dishes were too die for though! We had calamari, the gnocchi special and 2 different veal dishes. Arguably, the portions are too big, but when is that a problem? Service attentive and friendly. There are only two negatives. First they don't take reservations. One 'correction' from my original post regarding salad and bread......when I was in Italy for a couple years I don't ever remember receiving a salad and bread with dinner automatically. At Sapori, you also don't receive it automatically but they do have bread appetizers (bruschetta, etc) and salad entree's....all lf which are outstanding. A breath of fresh air for Monterey and the area. The atmosphere is very inviting and the staff friendly and attentive. While waiting for our table we had a glass of wine. I would have liked to seen a more extensive variety of wine by the glass, but what we had was good. My wife and I started with a Caesar salad and caprese. Both were very fresh but I would have been nice to have balsamic for the caprese. We both had and shared Beef Raviolis ala vodka and Linguini alla Pescatore S Angelo. The pasta in both dishes was excellent. The filling for the raviolis was quite tasty and the seafood on the other dish was plentiful and cooked perfectly. When we finished, there was more than half our dinners to take home because of the quantity. The prices of the dinners were consistent with going rates. Overall a very good value and we will be going regularly. I certainly hope the word gets out about this gem and it becomes a destination restaurant. read more
