After being in Key West for 4 days, we were ready for something other than seafood. I love tapas style and getting to try lots of different smaller dishes, and Santiago's Bodega did not disappoint! Can't comment on the food because we weren't served. We made a reservation (polite), showed up a few minutes early (polite) and weren't able to be seated. Perfectly fine, perfectly understandable. No issues. Got a little attitude when we asked to sit at the bar and wait and upon realizing they had a limited alcohol menu of only beer and wine, we decided to grab a drink a couple of blocks away until they could accommodate us. We walked into another restaurant and immediately felt a change in feel and personality. They were happy to see us, they found a table for our seven top. There was quiet music playing and a wonderful vibe. Our group decided to change our plans and eat there instead. I walked the two blocks back to Santiago's to let them know we were changing our plans (polite) and I was told that we would be charged 25 dollars per person for canceling the reservation. What was interesting is how I was told about the policy. I didn't get a "oh, we are sorry to hear that", or "unfortunately we have a policy because of..." They told me I was being charged for breaking the reservation. I mentioned that they weren't able to accommodate us at the bar and we found another spot. At this point they showed me that they had the credit card number and were going to charge us if we didn't eat there. My issue isn't with the policy, or frankly with the charge. My issue is that it felt like strong arm tactics to make us eat there. I told them we found a very friendly restaurant nearby and we're going to enjoy that atmosphere instead. They threatened to charge the card again and I just said "if that is what you need to do to make money, then knock yourself out" and left. I imagine the food is probably good. The reviews say that. Maybe the service at the table is good too. But getting from the door to the table showed that this wasn't the kind of place we wanted to be eating. We came for a mid afternoon meal of sangrias and some tapas. We ended up ordering a pitcher of red which was absolutely fantastic. It was made up with green apples, oranges, cinnamon. To pair with the drink we had a charcuterie plate made up of meats and a cheese plate. The meats were two itialian cuts one was a salami and the other ham- then there was a pate of pork/duck and a sausage of Chorizo with cranberries. There were also pepperoncini I and a grown caper which I've never seen before. It was a smaller version of the Pepperoncini but smaller and more mild. Then Kalamata olives and finally some mustard. The cubes board had three cheeses a soft, and hard and a blue cheese version a long with cranberries, nuts and grapes. So much for the tapas! Ha-never got to them. The service was good! Checking up on us, keeping refills up. The ambiance was great, we sat outside in the front, they turned on some outdoor string lights and we were able to take some pictures! With starters we ordered the ceviche, the cheese board, and the Bruschetta. The ceviche didn't come with a vehicle to eat it with but was very well seasoned with lime and avocado. The cheese board had different types of cheddar, very yummy. the bruschetta was very tasty with pesto and tons of basil. For the hot tapas, we ordered short rib, and the quesadillas. Both tasted very good! For this restaurant they do suggest to order 3 tapas per person, we found that might be too much for us, we were about to share 5 plates between 3 people. What an incredibly fun (and exquisite tasting) restaurant and dining experience! Came here on a recent Spring getaway trip and had heard wonderful things about the place. Reservations were hard to come by, but in a stroke of luck, a table opened up at 5:30 same-day and we jumped on it. Being we arrived during Happy Hour, we got right to it. We ordered a pitcher of red sangria, and quickly realized we were not going to be driving our car back to the hotel any time soon! Whoah...delicious, strong and a much bigger portion than we'd expected. But that's a good thing, right?!?!? We ordered in courses, which was a great way to spread out the meal and really enjoy each dish we tasted. First course was a salad, second included a few light tapas style options and lastly a few mains to top off the meal. The avocado and pear salad as a starter was a great way to ease into the experience...light dressing, fresh toppings on the mixed greens lettuce and a light dressing. Next up were the tapas dishes. We both loved the creamy smoked salmon spread and the grilled mushrooms plate had a lovely smokey quality to them. Finally, the heart of the meal...patatas bravas, shrimp and chorizo skewers and beef tenderloin with melted blue cheese on top. We potatoes had a spicy / zesty sauce on top that paired really well with the beef. The skewers were grilled giving a great charred flavor to both meats. But that beef tenderloin...holy cow (see what I did there?)...affirming why I am an omnivore. We fell in love with this dish and wish it would never end. Still having some sangria left in the pitcher after the third course meant no dessert, as we'd be drinking our dessert. ;-) After the meal we walked around the area, watching the chickens begin to roost in the adjoining property trees and basking in the glory that was a perfect meal. It seems so simple, but the dates stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in prosciutto were excellent! The charcuterie board made me a duck pate lover! This is a little different from a regular dining experience, but nonetheless so enjoyable. My boyfriend ordered a beer, I believe I might have ordered wine or something to drink, and they tell you about the menu. Basically you get a couple of plates to share and that's how it goes. We got a few things, including the tuna (it was good it was just a lot and the chunks of tuna are a little big for our liking, we might just be picky), and the spicy chorizo and shrimp was to die for. Such simple things elevated to a whole new level. The service was great, she recommended plates to us and explained what they were like and what to expect. The pitcher of sparkling based sangria was great to split and plenty strong. :) The avocado pear salad was my favorite and HUGE for two people. Amazing! One of the best meals from our trip to Key West. We came during their Happy Hour specials, which are offered daily from 3-6 pm. You can choose from a selection of 5 or 6 different tapa sized specials priced at the low price of $5. They also have half off glasses of sangria, which where absolutely delicious with real fruit pieces floating inside. Huge tapas and great quality food on the island, the biggest thing was that service was the least friendly on the island. I would certainly recommend a reservation because there were always people waiting outside. Only one bathroom stall for the women's bathroom which stinks. We didn't get many recommendations from the waitress or a warning that the tapas are actually massive. We started with two soups (french onion and gazpacho) and the greek salad. Both were huge- the salad alone could be a main meal. The taste on all three was great though- definitely recommend all 3. Red sangria was nice and dry but still with a touch of sweetness on the back end. The tuna ceviche had some of the largest chunks of tuna we have ever seen- I was shocked to see such large chunks for the price. We got the lamb, the steak, and the mini quesadillas. Everything tasted great but was so large- I am so shocked the waitress didn't warn us "hey you are ordering way too much". I really like how Santiago's is a little tucked out of the way of the busyness of the Duval St area. From Duval it's a pleasant walk down a relatively quiet one way street. We entered the restaurant passing by the outdoor seating. The interior almost transported us elsewhere as soon as we walked in. It was easy to forget we were still in Key West. Once seated our server Luis was tableside almost immediately. He was everything you'd want for a server in a restaurant like this. Luis was helpful in walking us through the menu, friendly & patient in answering our questions. Now to the food... Following some of Luis' suggestions we went with the Avocado & Pear Salad, Spicy Shrimp Bisque, Chicken Skewers, Mozzarella Burrata & Portobello stuffed Puff Pastry. Splitting everything gave us the best opportunity to try more food! The salad was the perfect blend of greens, sweet and savory. The bisque lived up to its name & had a great little kick. The skewers were cooked to perfection so that they were nice & juicy (& omg, paired so well with that lemon-tarragon sauce!). Loved the creamy texture of the mozzarella with the tomatoes and pesto.
