Don't rent from them in the rain. They will charge you a $25 cleaning fee if you step into their (already) dirty cab and leave any kind of foot print behind. I guess they expect you do get the cab washed before returning it. Absolutely just trying to nickel and dime their customers. I am not one to leave reviews, regardless of my experience or feelings with a buisness especially when it ends negatively because although we are entitled to our own opinions it's our own actions that land us with a shitty outcome and these buisness's don't ever get the fairness to defend their buisness or say their side of a negative review because they obviously don't want to lower themselves to that level and want to keep it professional and I command their ability to maintain that position because I on the other can't. I've been renting from san Marcos for almost 5 years and thru the years I've gotten to see what these employees have to go thru and deal with on a daily basis, it's not an easy job and these guys (Danny & Phil) go above n beyond what they're paid to do when they don't have to. Youre late on rent they'll work with you, you need to stay past hours to finish moving they stay late instead of going home to their family, you need a truck but they're all booked they'll call around and move things around if its workable for everyone involved to get you into one, they work they're asses off just to be treated like shit by people like Mary M and Sarah H who think the world revolves around them n think theyre phone call needs to be answered the moment they call as if they're purposely ignoring you and not actually assisting other customers check into they're truck rentals or units. Considering San Marcos Self Storage for your valuables? Think again. San Marcos appears to have a serious RAT problem. Despite spending hundreds of dollars a month for 'safe,' 'secure' storage, you wind up with neither. RATS are running uncontrolled through the facility. They will pee and poop on your stuff while chewing through cardboard containers to find nesting materials. The facility owners (MTM Development Corp 805.963.0358) truly show little interest in fixing the problem. We have invited the county to bring their experts in and yet, despite their recommendations, San Marcos is still running business the same old way. According to another review there was a RAT problem six years ago. We also met a guy who had similar pest issues but was hesitant to speak up because of his lack of American papers. Seems like nothing has changed. The storage facility managers want us to risk contracting hantavirus by moving everything outside so that they can clean the unit(s). Hantavirus (which has symptoms like Covid) is more easily transmitted when you stir things up. Will they be suited up with Tyvek and respirators? What about us? Will they pay for our expenses? Should we become ill from moving our valuables for them to clean up the rat infestation. When we asked them to remove our items and clean up the mess, they said they will not do that. We will have to do it, and then they will sanitize the units. Just how much work are we expected to do with two large storage units? Why are we paying rent when their place is a mess? I have personally caught several RATS in our two containers that are some distance apart. That itself tells me that the whole place is infested. At rare times they set traps in the hallways. If you haven't seen the traps it's because they don't want to advertise there is a RAT problem. Be sure to ask about a RAT problem if you decide to rent here. If they're not going to take any responsibility for their RAT negligence, they should put a clause in their contract saying "we will not reimburse you for the RATS on our property doing damage to your valuables." (That's called full disclosure, which is not done) Set aside money for 'RAT damage insurance,' if there even is that type of insurance for your stored valuables. These guys made the challenges of moving so much easier for us, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these guys. We just moved to the Santa Barbara area and had the BEST experience with the guys at San Marcos Self Storage with our u-haul rental and return. They went above and beyond and came out after hours to help us decouple our auto transport and then again the next day, they helped us out enormously by getting us into a transport van because our rental was due back and we still needed to move some stuff. It was a night and day difference from another uhaul who rented our auto transport out from under us after we paid for it in full. read more

Save yourself the hassle. These guys are never there and seldom answer the phone. They also have all kinds of rules around when you can access your storage unit. I've never had a storage unit that was this restrictive in accessing your own belongings. They didn't even have my name correct in their system, so my account could not be accessed when I needed assistance. They literally took my driver's license to create my account. I don't even know how that gets screwed up. About the only positive about this experience was that I intend to open up a storage unit company now on my own and put these guys out of business since they have no clue what they're doing and there is clearly an opportunity for competence. read more

DO NOT TRUST! They called me the NIGHT BEFORE my move AFTER HOURS to tell they didn't have a truck for me after I had reserved it and given my credit info. No way for me to book something else in time for tomorrow since everything is closed. All they said was "Nothing we can do." I wish I had read their horrible reviews before contracting with them. STAY AWAY!!! I made a rental truck reservation from this "business". They called me 6 hours from when I was supposed to pick up the truck to inform me that they would not be there when I was scheduled to pick up my truck. They informed me that they are never there unless it's by appointment, and furthermore they only schedule appointments between the hours of 9:00AM and 2:30PM. (WOW! Wouldn't we all like to work those hours everyday!) I told her it was hard for me to make it in the middle of the day, but told her I could take the only slot she was offering to pick up the truck at 1:30, but informed her that it would make it really tough for me to return my 24 hour truck rental 24 hours later @ 1:30 in the middle of my move! I asked if I could return it at my originally scheduled drop off time of 3:00. This would be 25.5 hours, but clearly should have been accommodated under the circumstances. She was unwilling to let me return the truck at my originally scheduled drop off time which had been accepted by the reservation system on the Budget website. I will spare you the longer story... just take my word for it, and save yourself from doing business with this EXTREMELY unprofessional business: SAN MARCOS SELF STORAGE which unfortunately happens to be the ONLY BUDGET truck rental service agent around. I normally like renting from BUDGET. So I hate to say this.... but I actually think UHAUL has BETTER service than SAN MARCOS SELF STORAGE... and I really don't like the service at UHAUL... but I'm gladly headed down the street to give them my business instead. read more

We dropped off a rented Budget truck here this past Monday, and had no problems with them at all. They didn't find anything wrong with the truck (which is good, because we didn't hit anything or damage it at all, hooray!) and they were nice and polite to us. They had quite a few different sized budget trucks available at the time, which is good if you're not sure which one you'd need. If we ever need another Budget truck I'd go here to rent it! read more

This is the worst self storage in the country, the managers hate their job and their customers even more, they run this place like a prison. Don't be fooled by the monthly prices, you will soon learn why. They also delete all the Yelp postings so check the Google and Yahoo local reviews for the truth. There used to be over 20 reviews and they deleted them all or have their friends write nice reviews. Look for yourself and find out why so many customers are saying. This is the worst run bussiness I have ever seen. My company rented for 14 years, when we finnished renting I went in for a close out receipt which should be standard. The lady at the front desk said there was no receipt she could give me, and that she had already closed our account, her bussiness partner/husband told me as long as I moved out by the 29th I would not be charged again which I was out by that date. Unfortunatly my company paid this bill automatically on the 29th for the next month. When I saw the check payment come back and it was cashed, I called three times and said that we had accidentally over paid, they stated that they would get back to me, and never did until the third call which they told me I was supposed to give them a letter two weeks in advance. I explained to the very same people that said we were finished with our contract that they had specifically stated we were clear. They continued to hide behind the clause in the rental agreement which they wouldn't show me. read more

Pro: people are nice, rent was reasonable. Cons: I've been here for two months and they just sent me a letter raising my rent. Not sure if everyone's went up or just mine??? I wouldn't be surprised if they offer the lowest rate in town just to raise it two months later for everyone though, so beware of that. Second, there are only two carts for the whole place...or I mean there were. Already that's not enough. The last few times I've gone over there I couldn't find any. Today I went and there was one, with someone using it and it looked like someone else waiting. So I walked up and down every isle looking for another cart...NONE. So if you plan on moving heavier stuff or don't like to wait, maybe go somewhere else, plus the rent thing. I'm starting to regret choosing this place. read more

This absolutely the worst storage facility in town. I paid $115 a month for 5 years to store my furniture. When I went to collect my items, everything was covered in rat feces and urine. There was also evidence of termites in the unit. When I went to the manager, he said that there was nothing he could do,. I am out $5000 plus most of my belongings. The manager, Tony, was extremely helpful, and was very pleasant and polite even when it was very busy. When I later cancelled my unit (didn't need that much storage space after all) he even gave me a refund credit for the first couple of days of the month, since I never even unlocked it. Only a few bucks, but I really appreciated the gesture, and that the guys were friendly and courteous--moving is stressful enough that a few nice people can make all the difference! I'd read some older reviews and was hesitant to try this place at first, but apparently the company has changed managers. I thought they were great! The unit itself was easy to get to, clean, and everything is on a security camera and behind locked gates. read more

Beware. I had an experience that is best described as surreal. I made a reservation for a small moving truck. I had to get there by noon because they close then. Kind of like Europe. UCSB, Yeah. Plus next day was Sunday. Totally closed. Totally Europe. I got the feeling the Renting Trunks was not a high priority. Then came the call... at 8:30am... you better hurry... your 11:30 res. is blah, blah, blah -- she actually told me to hurry while I was driving!! I arrived at around 10:30am and no one was in the office. Had to Call her. Then waited +30 mins for her to do her check out thing.... Anyway... good luck if you journey down this "road"... much more is say but you will find out if you wish. By the way, I did get a truck but apparently it was because I showed up before 2 other people that had a reservation. The truck was much bigger the one I reserved. But I was so happy to drive away I didn't care at that point. Beware. I might contact Budget about this biz. Callin me like that.... read more

I am sorry that other renters have had poor experiences with the staff. I have had the contrary. I have rented one of the largest units for 3 years, I have the option to pay for 12 months and get one month free rent (or you can calculate the figures in as less per month for the 12 month period). I have had no theft, of course, knock on wood, the facility is extremely accessible to my weekly working lifestyle. I am aware that I am paying rent for things that I still keep but 40% I will sell and/or donate so I can lament that I am "wasting my money" paying for space for things that I will no longer take with me. Well, this is my choice. I own it. There are no rats/mice infestation; during a stormy winter in 2012 there was no moisture damage. The front desk staff are too the point, not overly friendly, just doing their business and getting my needs met. Thank you for your service and facility San Marcos Storage. read more
